Ahh so that comparison is invalid…
I'd like to see a third column with this special now
One Piece Anime's 2-Hour - Nami Special (25th August)

So since those last ten comparison-shots didn't actually use the footage from the special… Here, have a comparison that actually does.

It's been three weeks since the special's airing now, I wonder why there still isn't a subbed version!
I mean, Yibis said like 10 days ago that the translation is finished, so it should come out these days, or not?
Usually I'm quite a patient person, but now I just can't wait anymore^^ -
Well, I'm sure they've got other priorities…
Anyway I think by the end of the month it will be out (mind you I'm not a part of yibis and just guessing). -
At this point, I'm just hoping it comes out at all…
-
I'm still not sure why anyone is subbing the episodes in the first place- considering Funi is doing them very quickly online.
Unless it has something to do with other countries not being able to see Funi's videos.
But regardless, I'm surprised someone hasn't subbed this already.

Yibis is super-high quality, both in translation and transfer. I try to support Viz/Funi since that's one of the few ways I have to officially support One Piece, but there's no question that an Yibis version is vastly superior.

Because Funimation uses names like Hordy, that's why.
Also yes, it's probably the country thing too. -

They sub the normal episodes and the horrible subs rip them and releases them.
But this is a special episode, Funi didn't sub it.
So thusly no horriblesub release for it and we're all waiting on a subgroup (in this case yibis) to sub it for us. -

Also yes, it's probably the country thing too."Hody" is written in Japanese as "ホーディ". The "ー" There elongates the sound of the O in the Ho at the beginning. That, quite often, in Japanese, when this is done to a vowel like that, means that you throw an R in there. When FUNimation first started doing the simulcast, Oda had not yet written it in English, even a good chunk of Scanlators were using R. It's a completely valid romanization, that is applied to literally hundreds of other names and terms in One Piece. Case in Point, "Oars" [オ[B]ーズ], "Mister (1, 2, 3, etc)" [ミスタ[B]ー], Caesar [シーザ[B]ー], Roger [ロジャ[B]ー], (Firebird) Star [スタ[B]ー].
Dumb reason to refuse to support the official product and help the series in the US is dumb.
If you're in the US/Canada, you should be watching the Simulcast. Plain and Simple.
-
When FUNimation first started doing the simulcast, Oda had not yet written it in English, even a good chunk of Scanlators were using R.
…Hody's name was spelled out in English in chapter 631, which came out several months before he was even mentioned in the anime. On the other hand, who's to say this isn't yet another case of Toei telling FUNi to spell the character's name the wrong way? In any case, yeah, "FUNi uses the wrong spelling for Hody's name!" is a pretty weak reason to reject the simulcast.
…And I realize that it might seem a bit hypocritical for me to be saying this being that I am the translator for said fansub group, but… Honestly people, if you live in the US, you could at least open the simulcast-episodes and let them play through once each week, even if you don't want to watch it in that quality or with FUNi's (rather rushed… for obvious reasons) translations. It's not like you lose anything whatsoever from doing so, and you would be supporting the series at least a little bit.

My mistake, I apologize. But yes, I assume this is a Toei list issue, like most terminology issues.

Truth. TRUTH!
Masses of Anime fans, ye who feel undeservedly entitled to have HD versions of this show without paying anything for it. Even if your delusions force you to feel you're somehow owed this show for free, you at least owe it to the people making this series to watch the simulcast so they get some ad revenue. EVEN if you don't actually WATCH the show, as Vegard said, just open it and let it play.
-
I do support the simulcast each week. The quality isn't as hot as I'd prefer but, as you've all stated, you're supporting an official release.
Though I would like it if FUNimation added an HD factor for their subscribers. I know that excludes people who don't want to pay from a clearer experience, but the people who do pay 7.99 a month (such as myself) should be entitled to HD simulcasts. Though FUNimation hasn't had an HD simulcast yet…
Nonetheless support the simulcast as much as you can!
-
They've answered that question before, and basically, What they can/can't broadcast via simulcast is up to the license owner. Which would be Toei in this circumstance, and I'm sure you're aware at this point how bad working with them can be.
-

I do watch the simulcast episodes. Doesn't mean I can't watch the better fan sub versions.

What a tangent we've gotten on.
If they simcasted THIS episode, I'd go watch it….but that isn't the case guys. -

In case there's french readers over here, The Episode of Nami is now available in Vostfr and HD at Oro Jackson Sub. -
Why are there even french subbed versions out but no english version? Is Yibis the only group doing this special?
-
There are portuguese to.
! On site called anitube
-
Spanish aswell no English, sadly.
-
@OPF:
Why are there even french subbed versions bouhouhou.
Sorry in advance, really don't want to sound like an ass but damm… Honnestly I really did not think I would find that sort of comment here.
You do realise how non-sense and amazingly spoiled is what you wrote, right ? (and well, a bit insulting)If you're 13, I truly apologize.
-

I don't know any french fansubs and I honestly never thought that any french subbers could be quicker than a english fansub group, since I thought there are far more english fansubbers. I don't know anything about anime and manga in France, so I apologize if my statement was in any way insulting you.
-
It's just need one team to go, all around the world, that's the beauty :)
(just in case, all my blahblah was not just about French cuz I am. More about the fact that if China, Senegal (well french in that case), Algeria, Italia or whatever has One Piece love, and they do, no reason at all they don't get any sub of any movies, épisodes, scans, as fast (and more importantly, as clean) as they can. Not so an english or french matter.)And all in all, even if I had to wait 6 months or 2 year to have a proper sub-ting, well, that not matter. I do not own any right to be that impatient (what i wanna say is who am I to say: "Hurry Up you kind people who works with passion and for free ! I need to see this or that !" ?)
Internet can make us very spoiled. But sorry, I apologize too, I know you did not meant to be rude or anything.
I was… just gettin out of my bed... Let's forget that !Since I'm here, just for talk, France have indeed a long manga history (all is relative. It's started about the late 70's) and have since then a huge manga market (not do very sure but I think it's the world second one)
Hope you can have a nice english sub of that épisode soon and enjoy it :)
-
Yeah, you're right, I'm just too spoiled because the fansubbers usually are very quickly with subbing an episode or a movie. It's rude of me if I tell them to hurry up since they are working for free, spending their spare time to work hard to bring us fans the series in good quality^^
And it's great that France has such a big manga market! Is One Piece popular over there or is it again all about Naruto like in so many other countries?
-
I just watched it raw since I already knew what happened, I could roughly understand what they were saying anyway (watcheing subbed anime for 10 years does that to you) and I mainly watched it for the re done strawhats vs fishmen fights.
So I don't see what the big fuss is about lack of english subs, they're not really nessesary -
Wow I can't believe a sub still hasn't been released… Where's that guy with the villain off phineas and ferb avatar who works for yibis?
-
Because believe it or not, fansubbers are not at the beck and call of entitled anime watchers, and subbing anything, especially a special that is several times the length of a weekly episode, is going to take time.
-
@OPF:
Is One Piece popular over there or is it again all about Naruto like in so many other countries?
Well… Have to say that Naruto was the very big hit with kids from the start.
A (huge) succes whose in fact made the editors less reluctant to start publishing a LOT more manga over here (even if all kids like me in the 80's grew up with many animes on TV like Dragon Ball, Saint Seiya, Hokuto no Ken, Kinnikuman, Haisukuuru! Kimengumi, Orange Road, Urusei yatsura, Space Cobra and many more (damm that was good...), making an entire generation completely familiar with this culture, and the 90's saw the rise of the manga librairy édition and movie like Ghost in the Shell helping critics to be more approval (there was a time when "Manga culture" was a stupid debat in the opinon... You know the story: "It's poor, violent, making our kids stupid" all the craps coming in each generation, Comics book had this in the 50's...) it's really around 2000-2002 that this market made a incredible BOOM)(funny to note that, however, when manga slowly came in France in the 70's with some Tezuka books, the brillant Hadashi no Gen, and some animes like Yūfō Robo Gurendaizā and Candy Candy, it was pretty well received by the intelligensia)
Sorry I drifted away a little...
So yeah, you can say Naruto was the thing. But One Piece always been popular, not as much, but making his own little way and well, since 2 or 3 years it's became more and more popular. Strong World even get in Theaters, there is some little exhibitions occasionally, wich Naruto never had. Strong World get an award, the name of Oda is aknowledge like in the "Festival d'Angoulême", a pretty famous international comics Festival... I think One Piece is the best seller nowadays, and better, It's recognize as a GOOD book/story/dream.
-
Wow, that sounds awesome! I wish I could live in France! I hope OP Film Z can come to your theaters as well! And I guess you'll also get this Nami special on DVD!
-
Information about Limited Edition DVD/Blu Ray, could someone translate it please?
The Episode of Nami is out on Blue-Ray and DVD November 30th
and there will be a special first-run limited edition and an additional preorder bonusThe Special First-Run Limited Edition includes:
Nami's Sea Chart and Quill (ballpoint pen)
If you preorder, you get an A3 size tapestry of a famous scene -
Haha. Well, for manga, it's pretty great. I think (even if the sell boom has stop, which is logic in a way, and the market has to operate some mutations (Shueisha operate themself directly recently here by buying their own french editor compagny, creating in the process a sort of crisis who doesn't say its name with the historic ones), things continue to be good for readers anyway and will still be in my opinion)
But I can assure you not everything are this good over here. You betta wish to make anywhere you are a better place :)
And yeah, we got the movies only recently, precisely with the Shueisha arrival. They realise them on Blue-Ray/DVD since 2 years, and I guess they won't let the Episode of Nami opportunity flyin' away :)
Well, that said, I have to tell: This special IS good.
Really successful in getting the point of a good adaptation.Plus the arts, animation and all…
(and the "Overtaken thing" really does not matter to me at all. I mean, what's the point of remake the exact same thing ? ... And, well, that keep the anime version alive with its own interests)
-
A Spanish subbed version is out now as well!
I hope we won't have to wait that long for the english subs anymore^^ -

All the feelings~~
I'm french and yeah the story between manga/anime and France is long, i grew up with dbz, cats eyes, captain tsubasa, city hunter, slam dunk, saint seiya and the list can goes on forever!About one piece, his popularity was there for quite some times but since Strong world, a little before it explosed and now One piece from my point of view is by far the best manga selling in France!
Everybody knows the name, even though they kind of think that OP is the same thing as naruto aka manga for kids when the OP story is obviously touching the current problem like racism, dreams, friendship etc… -
Wow I am really jealous wish i was French,anime/manga seems to be massive over there and just across the channel in the UK its invisible :(
-
@gum:

Wouldn't it make more sense just to wish you were Japanese? I'm sure it's more popular there than in France.
-
Woot I'm going to enjoy a french sub then!
I'd seriously read One Piece in french if they didn't translate Ussop as Pipo it was such a turn off for me. I guess that was when Glénat (publisher) was less flexible with names as say Kana (other publisher).
-
Every time this thread gets updated I hope there is an English sub :(
-

oh defenitely , Japan is the holy land of anime/manga, I'm just envious of the way it has taken off over there so it was a spurr of the moment kind of thing
-
@Miss:

Mhmmm… I have some griefs about Glenat (some laughs per exemple) but frankly not this one. Pipo is actually a really good translation (as the name in Japanese is a playword. They keep that)
-

I do the same. Then I start thinking that no one will post it here when it actually happens.
Sure is weird how long it is taking though, not that I'm complaining. I can wait.
-
I already have the RAW. If I knew Japanese, I would have already subbed it myself.
Doubt it would take me more than a day. -
!
Everybody knows the name, even though they kind of think that OP is the same thing as naruto aka manga for kids when the OP story is obviously touching the current problem like racism, dreams, friendship etc…"One Piece" is still very much a kids manga, but a kids manga that has great appeal to adults.
Also is it just me but do people assume that worldwide "Naruto" is the talk-of-the-town as opposed to "One Piece" because they live in a country where "Naruto" is more popular than "One Piece"? Maybe it's because I watched this video, missing information as much as it does:
I've always heard "Naruto" is bigger in North American and Europe and "One Piece" is more popular in Asia. But even in America (and it sounds like to a significant extent in Europe) "Naruto" is getting less popular and "One Piece" is getting more popular. Yes, I mean at least in America that might not be saying much, but I'm noticing it.
-
Comments on that video are hilarious.
I notice the same. I speak with my cousins in Vietnam and One Piece is the big thing there (bootleg subs of the anime all day every day). Someone said it earlier–Naruto is all about individualism while One Piece emphasizes group action, and you can imagine what cultures tend to favor what. As for One Piece finally getting more popular in America, I think that's directly tied with Viz pushing it (now that Naruto is almost ending and Bleach is in its last arc) and the Funimation dub. The speed-up a couple of years ago, and the War, helped me get into One Piece; I imagine it's the same with a lot of other people.
-
One Piece isn't about 'collectivism', it's about the individual forming trust and relationships with others. Summing it up to be of the 'collective' mindset is just too easy, and not true.
Naruto about the individual? I don't think so. I've only read 200 chapter of Naruto, but there was little about the individual explored in that time. You're mixing 'individual themes' with characters being more on their own, without so much support, friendship, and interest in trust and themes.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
As for addressing why US generally likes Naruto more than One Piece:
Ask any anime fan. What're they more interested in than anything else in an anime? Fighting. They like fights. Naruto is 90% fights, 10% story. (once again, I'm only speaking on the first 200 chapters, which is when it was more popular in the states anyways). One Piece is more like 30/70. American teens like violence and fighting, not themes and plot-driven narrative. They don't want to think when they sit down in front of that tv.
-

Eh, this is me being bad with English again.
When I said it was "about" collectivism/individualism (although I note I didn't actually use the word collectivism), I didn't mean that was what Oda and Kishimoto were trying to espouse or the message that they were trying to push (and certainly not a theme). It's more that that's what the people in the story value and so that's what we are shown a lot of. Characters in One Piece generally act together, with their groups, and make decisions for the betterment of them and their peers. Naruto characters generally act alone.
It's just indicative of some broader social trends, is all. Might be a coincidence, might not, but there's certainly no one true interpretation or explanation.

seen the special. i enjoyed it very much. the pace was a little fast but its nothing that ruins the experience.
