I have a Wii; I haven't touched it in ages but it had plenty of cool games and I don't regret having it. However, if there ever was a good reason to use the Wiimote, it has long grown annoying and/or boring. My gripe with the Wii U is that it's still trying to be a Wii. They can't move past Wii hardware nor the Wii name. To put this in perspective, the Wii U is what the original Wii should have been. Now, in 2012, I would like to see a NEXT generation console. That is what torments me the most about the prospect of actually supporting and owning one, even if it will have games I will enjoy.

Why isn't it next generation? Because its graphics aren't that marginal amount better? Honestly, even though the Wii didn't turn out that well, I support Nintendo's choice to do something new and innovative rather than follow the status quo. ANd before someone goes on about how power doesn't just mean graphics, I know. I honestly think making games too cutting edge isn't even that great fore gaming. Even now I feel innovation is being squashed because the risks of making a brand new franchise are too high because making a game now costs tons of money. And I still feel that letting developers do exactly what they want kills off some innovation because sometimes the best ideas are born from hitting a wall and having to do something new to get around it

I was about to make a comment on Nintendo's franchise as a whole earlier, but nothing is worse than facing a crowd of overly enthusiastic Nintendo fanatics.
Let me turn the clock back a bit. To the times before the Wii launched. Nintendo made it seem like they had it made when it came down to receiving third party support. That and the Nintendo fans treated the console like a gold nugget on the notion that it sold the most compared to the 360 and the PS3. There was also that belief that the Wii had more games. To tell the truth, all of this got me really exited and I bought the console in hopes I'd enjoy the library of games.Tetsunuko vs Capcom was my first game… It was fun to 30 minutes, and fun online with a friend for 3 minutes(lag). I played Mario Galaxy and that was great. I played Mario Kart and that was fun. I played New Super Mario Wii and was bored out of my mind(why was this soulless game so hyped, I dunno). I played Super Paper Mario and was even more bored out of my mind. I downloaded the Wiiware Contra game and thought it was an insult to Contra. I played Demon Blade, and thought it was meh. I played Pokemon Battle Revolution and it wasn't Pokemon Stadium. I then looked through the rest of the library and felt like alot of the games weren't exiting enough for me to actually pick up. I browsed through some trailers for upcoming games and I was like "Woooowhsit, this is a drought and there's nothing that exites me". I then waited for few years for Monster Hunter Tri and Xenoblade. Enjoyed those I guess... I would have gotten Skyward Sword if they didn't force me to buy an additional controller for a console that's near the end of its life. That and WiiMotion Plus wasn't widely utilized for me to make that investment to begin with.
In conclusion, the Wii has had to have been the most boring console I've ever owned, and I deeply regret purchasing it. I think I've said this before. I'm not going to jump on any hype trains for a Nintendo console this early in the game. For all I know, the devs might end up jumping ship 3 years or less into the WiiU's life, while leaving behind a handful of games that are either not worth being exited over or multi-platformed on a console that has other games that appeals to me.
So yeah, I'm not really confident about the WiiU at all. The Wii just completely drained whatever excitement I had, and it's going to take a whole lot more than a handful of exclusives to convince me.

You know, I have to admit that I'm a little glad all this butthurt is at least geared toward something concrete and not something like "Waawaaa waaahhh, Nindendoh's gunna tone her downn, fanservize is what hur kharakter is alll aboot!"
Some silver lining, eh?

I agree with that.

Gee now this makes me wish someone would give Alpha Protocol a second chance seeing as how quick Sega was to give the axe to that or maybe even The Club.

Wish granted.

Still, Obsidian's working on a new IP with Kickstarter, so I'm pretty satisfied overall.

I guess you didn't read my post, because it was about how the Wii U is NOT innovative, because it's just a new Wii. I don't think "hey we have a new touchscreen controller but it's so expensive you can only have one and everyone else gets Wiimotes" is exactly a groundbreaking or exciting prospect. And though the CPU specs have not been fully disclosed (I think, which is a bad sign already), it is estimated to not be much more powerful than PS3/360.
Also you are sorely mistaken if you think that producing a game is expensive just because it has high-end graphics. That's like… basically not the case at all. I agree there is something wrong about the direction the mainstream gaming industry is taking their games and their expectation of games and gamers, but that has nothing to do with whether or not a system has the best hardware in it.
Also I'm always one to support the notion that graphics don't make or break a game, but it's really, really hard to play PS3 games and then suddenly play a Wii game and ignore that it looks so much worse on my HD screen. Maybe some people can ignore it completely but I can't. It's like when I buy a bigger monitor or phone. My old one invariably looks small after a couple of weeks. I use to like it just fine, but the contrast is jarring.

Well, that would be the final nail in the coffin for many people I think, and considering they revived the project I don't think most people think Nintendo is THAT stupid. When you're trying to win back a "hardcore" audience you don't pull that kind of crap.

You know that power doesn't just mean graphics, but you don't seem to show it. Graphics is the only thing anyone brings up when people say something isn't powerful or that this isn't the next gen or whatever. Scale, AI, view distance, etc all are left behind when thinking of what next gen could mean. I mean, and this is a technical thing so sue me, we moved to high definition TVs and programming (mostly) quite a while ago and while the WiiU can supposedly run games at 1080p I'll see it when I believe it. There was even that interview talking about how the WiiU version of AC3 will be missing some effects that even the PS360 will have. You can scream innovation all you want but programming a game on an underpowered console stifles creativity as much as rushing and budgets do I would say. You could have this amazing idea but not be able to do it because the console can't handle it. This doesn't really apply when making Super Mario Bros 23432 but if you're trying to make a truly cutting edge game you're going to have some problems. AI is still shitty now and the WiiU has what? An underclocked tri core CPU? Games nowadays don't use quad cores which is really a problem with the developers I suppose but if everything was caught up with the technology you'd start to see people experimenting with the power. I mean hell, if I didn't know better I'd think GTAV would have fucking loading times because Rockstar couldn't pull off what they were wanting to do with the game, even if they were using the WiiU as the lead console. And also, we are currently on DX11 in regards to the method that games are rendered by. Everything I've heard about the Wii U says it only supports DX10 which was released in something like 2006 or 2007. Not only does DX11 allow games to be much more optimized than they are now, it supports a ton of features that could go towards different things in games. So unless the PS4 or 720 supports it, we're stuck with 7 more years of new tech and features that do fuck all because the consoles don't support them.
And now that I see it, what exactly are Nintendo doing new and innovative? They stuck a screen in the middle of their controller and are starting to look like they care about third parties. You're still stuck with a console just barely more powerful than the ones we have now that has a gimmick just like the Wii did. Nintendo is most likely going to be the only people taking advantage of the screen, other companies are still going to be making games for the PS3 and 360 and just throwing in some shitty mechanic that uses the WiiU's screen.
The power of the hardware isn't everything, we still have an industry that punishes creativity and consumers that inhale the next CoD game but, and I'm not even sure you're saying this as I've lost track of my point, to say that hardware doesn't affect creativity is kind of wrong.
Edit: How did this even come up in this thread anyway? Bayonetta is a DMC-esque button masher, not really a groundbreaking, envelope pushing game.
-
Edit: How did this even come up in this thread anyway? Bayonetta is a DMC-esque button masher, not really a groundbreaking, envelope pushing game.
Oh come on now, it has its thing going. It's somewhat polarizing but you don't see a huge number of games with a FEMALE lead that are consciously completely over the top with violence, sex, and cheap puns. Even the name! Also if you call it a button masher you probably haven't played it much. Like I said before, one thing I appreciate about the game is that it's downright difficult. You're very screwed if you try mashing, and it's instant slaughter on higher difficulties. I hate DMC but I quite enjoyed Bayonetta.
-
Well there is Lolipop Chainsaw which, to me, looks like a similar game. You're right that I haven't played it but I was speaking gameplay wise mostly. Sure, it's an over the top violent game with a female lead but I hardly consider that "groundbreaking" or whatever.
-
Bayonetta is a game built with love to games of the past, reference many of Hideki Kamiya (the game's director) past games, before he and all of his closest co-workers were all dropped out of Capcom. The game was inspired by the games of it's past, including Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe, and Okami. The game also holds much love and references to various Sega games. It is the revenge game meant to put Capcom to shame for ever shutting down Clover Studios (the people who created Viewtiful Joe and Okami) to begin with, and people love it.
The game has a damn decent set-up of combos with various weapons, ranging from pistols, shot guns, ice skates, dual rocket launchers, explosive claws that can radiate electricity or fire, and various other weapons that can be equipped on your hands, feet, or both.
If you honestly think the first Bayonetta is a button masher or a clone of Devil May Cry (or any clone of DMC), you have not played this game at all. I'm sorry. I don't want to be rude, but I'm really tired of this baseless statement.
-
I can see where people get the idea that it's similar to DMC tho.
I kinda wanna play through the first one again now. Did they ever fix the loading problems on the PS3?
-
I can see where they see how it's similar to DMC, but I don't see how that make that judgment and brush it off like it's a game that's not worth it.
EDIT: And yes, that's been fixed.
-
I noticed I didn't really comment on the news regaurding B2 on WiiU. Infact, I do support it since the franchise wasn't funded for a sequel to begin with. And, I'm not sure if there's any copywrite issues but there's nothing stopping a port of the first game I think(I'm assuming here). So it's fair game.
I haven't played B1 yet, but Insider sort of convinced me I should. I put it off before because the initial trailers were really hard to swallow.
But recently I'm learning that trailers do not really make a game or final product. I'm sure as hell the gameplay is fun.. As long as it isn't Asura's Wrath or some Youtube game. -
Bayonetta was a solid as fuck game. Better than anything than DMC has done since number 3. And I even played the not as good ps3 port too.
I can live without the sequel. Cool to see it on the
wii u though. -

You can get Bayonetta for like $20 or less now. There's no reason not to at least rent or buy it, and give it a shot.
The story is a lot better than the trailers tell. Bayonetta is far more than just a sex symbol as a character. There are far more lovable characters. Just be prepared for a lot of cheese. A lot of really, really good cheese.

You're assuming people act most creative when they can do exactly what they want. But while the theory behind that is sound, it isn't always true. Sometimes you can be more creative by working around limits. Your arguement only works if we assume creators are too lazy to try and do something in unexpected ways, which kills off creativity anyways. Power can do some stuff, but can you give me an example of something really game changing that can't be done with current tech? Little effects can be cool, but people obsess over them too much in my opinion.

We have to get the small things down before we can move on to bigger things. ME3 didn't even let you holster and unholster your weapon at will due to not having enough hardware to work with and Skyrim's DLC can't be brought to the PS3 for the same reason. There's also a mechanic that's been taken out of games because of limited inputs on console controls: leaning. I'm not going to say it's a game changing mechanic but having the ability to lean around corners to see what's on the other side does affect things in some genres. I really feel that it's missing in Metro 2033. This isn't really a technical limitation as much as it's a limitation of the input methods though. The same thing goes for tying multiple actions to a single button. Things like sprinting, cover, and leaping over cover being tied to a single input is annoying as hell a lot of the time. I really can't think of any gameplay mechanisms that aren't possible now on the spot though, possibly because they haven't been used yet.

You're doing something wrong if you have to buy a 3rd kind of controller to enjoy a game. Just like how the Wii supported Gamecube controllers. Which really was the only way a great deal of games became playable at all, and I used it as frequently as possible. Or, you could spend extra money for a classic controller which is a slap in the face which says "give us extra money for something that should have come with the console and show off how poorly our flagship controller is designed!" If you want examples of completely unplayable games on the Wiimote (practically speaking, not literally speaking since most games somehow hack together support for Wiimote), for starters you can look at just about any fighting game, including Brawl. There are many others. But as a rule anything that supports a controller other than a Wiimote plays much better on the other controller. It's terribly backwards.
The Wii U is a bigger slap in the face though because it doesn't even support Gamecube controllers so now you HAVE to buy their "pro" controller or sure, shell out another $150 or something for extra touchscreen controllers IF the game happens to support it. It's just ridiculous.

I honestly don't get what the big deal is. Systems usually don't launch with multiple controllers out of the box, so you'd need to buy another controller anyways. WHy does it matter if that controller isn't the exact same thing as the one you got in the box? The fact that you can use wii controllers is a plus since it means you might have multiple controllers from the get go. Please explain how having to buy a pro controller is so much different than buying an xbox 360 or ps3 and buying another controller for local multiplayer
-
You keep narrowing your focus to the point where you're missing the concept. The reason it's bad is the same reason it was bad on the Wii - a lot of games require motion control, even if they barely use it (i.e. Mario Galaxy). This means you CAN'T use a different controller. In the case of the Wii U that means the pro controller won't work for any game that utilizies those features. Also Nintendo stated that the main controller is not usually meant for multiple players (unless they took that back), rendering extra ones often useless and, again so that you don't miss the point, THEY ARE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE.
I can't even imagine all the peripherals they'll try to introduce and I hope to hell they don't start introducing required enhancements because the originals weren't good enough (Wii Motion Plus anyone?). And let's not forget that technically the nunchuck isn't part of the Wiimote. Peripheral!
-
Also, you couldn't use the Gamecube or classic controller to navigate the main menu on the Wii, so even if you wanted to play a game without the wiimote you still had to turn it on just to get into the game.
-
So…anyone want to talk about what do they wanna see in Bayonetta 2? I'm hoping for bigger boss battles than the 1st one and hope they don't go all gimmicky with the WiiU gamepad.
-
Why do people still say this? After the patch shortly after the release the PS3 version isn't really different from 360, the 360 just seems to have more vivid colors.
Trust me, the 360 is still better.
Colors are the most noticeable thing… but even after the patch and the install... it's still slower in comparison.
-
I certainly didn't have a problem playing it, it can't be that bad can it? Before the patch was a different story, I actually stopped playing it was so awful.
-
Oh it's playable. I love the game. But I can definitely admit the 360 is the superior version.
-
Yeah sorry Buuhan, but the 360 version really is a lot better than just marginally. Bayonetta for PS3 is unfixable too, even with patching, due to its development. Like, you can play the PS3 version and it'll work out, but it'll never really be as fluid or look as smooth and it's enough that it really is a detriment.
But yeah
Like I said, I haven't played the game, and I don't have much experience with whatever genre the game is at all really. My statements were going off of a gameplay video that I watched.
Trust me, it has an incredibly tight gameplay system that basically requires precision to get by, unless you're dorking around on the easiest difficulty setting. And even then button mashing will get you absolutely nowhere
It's not God Hand levels of good, but it's really excellent entirely on the spectrum of being what these kinds of action games need to be. It ain't no button masher.
-
To anyone who writes off Bayonetta as a button masher…
...I give you... DJB13
-
It's like watching ballet…
I lost when the car was actually used as a part of a combo.
-
Oh you know it. That's probably the best part.
And then I go and fire up my copy… thinking "oh I can do all that"
Yeah... I and the other 85% of Bayonetta plays wish we could.
-
Question. Is that a hit counter that showing skill sets and damage totals during a combo? That's really cool. There I games I played that I wished had a feature like that.
Also, the video was almost as fun to watch as DMC3's "Hell Sloth mus Die"(even though the combos in that one is vastly outdated).
-
It's actually a point counter. Each attack gains you a certain amount of points, and the points add up to your total. The longer your combos lasts, the bigger your multiplier. The longer the combo you manage, the more amount of halos (game's form of currency) you get.
Yeah, I can't pull that stuff off. I generally go for more damaging combos, as I generally use Shotguns (hands) + Durgas (feet). Shoot the shit out of my enemies and throw Durga fire bombs everywhere.
Although, I gotta say, the last combo of the video ended with Jeanne placing a Durga fire bomb and using the whip to pull the enemy right INTO the bomb? That's fucking genius. I never thought of that. And slowing down time so you can use the katana's charge feature? Nope. Never thought of that either.
Crap, I want to play the game now…
-
Makes me wonder how they'd transfer the gameplay on the WiiU… well, they could just go traditional and have menus and other little features on the pad.
Changing weapons during combat with a touch control might be useful as well.
-
That's why I like the Wii U. The touch screen could have a menu set up, or have a map of the area you are in, or even both.
-
All those SEGA references will be gone now, won't they?
-
All those SEGA references will be gone now, won't they?
Why? Sega and Nintendo have games together.
Either way, Sega is acting as adviser for the game. To an extent, Bayonetta is still a Sega game… kind of.

If anything, now there'd be Nintendo AND Sega references.
The programmers make the references and easter eggs, I don't see how anyone could stop them.
-
Actually, yeah. They made plenty of Capcom references after being fired from Capcom…

That combo video, well to use an appropriate term, was like sex! There is no way I could pull combos like that off but good lord do I wanna try!
As for Bayonetta 2 coming out for the Wii-U, meh I'm not that peeved about it. It just means I'll have to spend extra money… A LOT of extra money.

Bayonetta is looking sexy (the game and the girl) a nice glimpse of the gameplay.
What do you guys think of her new look?

They cut Bayonetta's hair??
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!
! Actually, it's not that bad. I think I kinda like it.

I think it looks even sexier than the beehive hairstyle…though I can't make any sense of how her suit works now though.
