While Team B feels "cheap", I'm glad Mashima at least showed he didn't pull this out of his ass while in the middle of the chapter as Juvia isn't seen in the previous chapter. And the people he chose for Team B will make for some great upcoming situations (Gray-Juvia-Leon, Gajeel-Raven Tail, Elfman-Mirajane, Erza-Gajeel, Natsu-Gajeel-Sting-Rogue)

It's simple. Makarov didn't want the "main" team to know that there would be a "secondary" team from Fairy Tail competing (probably to avoid unnecessary rivalry so soon), so he lied about Gajeel and Laxus' situation in order to justify Lucy and Wendy being part of the main team (because they (Laxus and Gajeel) were already part of the secondary team at the time)
It's also possible that Gajeel and Laxus returned after the main team was formed, so Makarov decided to form another team (I don't remember any rule about "teams have until this day to decide their members", so I guess anytime before the start of the preliminaries was fair game) just to up the chances of FT winning.

Yeah, two pages that could have progressed the story, but ultimately were wasted by an unneeded recap. I know this happens all the time in other manga, still doesn't make up for wasting story space…

Personally, I liked the chapter. I laughed out loud at a few parts (the ones that come to mind are Mavis deciding to skip over part of the explanation because it's boring, and Juvia's reaction to all of the Gray clones), and I like the idea of this event. It seems similar to the multiplayer in Assassin's Creed, but it's still interesting.

It's the regular recap on innecesary complex rules, on an extra length chapter, with color pages, of mashima that if he doesn't delivers quality content he almost always has a chapter on print, that we got instead of 2 pages more of people fucking up the game (as they are almost required to understand it during the start of a chapter, then fail again and in that one's climax trully get it), on the chapter that will most likely be the start of a new volume in the compilation.
I say that your complains are baseless.

I just found them pointless. not that he could have made them into something else, just removed them. He could have saved 10 minutes, 20 minutes, hour whatever it took to draw those 2 pages by not drawing them.
As said this was a long chapter, without them it woud have still been fine.

I don't find them baseless at all. It felt like filler to me and just really pointless. If it is as you say and it becomes the first chapter of a volume, I can understand. If it turns out that way fine. I'm just saying it felt tacked on is all…

Hm, that was alright. Not too bothered about the couple of pages explaining the rules. I know FT is as cliche and generic as they come, but you can't deny that Mashima at least puts in more effort than some other certain manga artists out there. In terms of workload and stuff that is.

Well, I've never played Assassin, so I thought the game of Hidden was really original. Original or not, I liked the chapter and Hidden is a nice break from the usual fanservice, comedy and nakama punch fighting chapters of Fairy Tail.
Just too bad that Gray seems like he'll be the worf to show the rivalry between Fairy Tail and Raven Tail and how strong the latter are.

Admittedly, it's a very cool concept and if it's the type of thing we're going to be seeing in this tournament, I'm all for it. And it would probably play better in a manga as a psychological battle than it does in real life (unless it's lan vs your friends).

Reasonable chapter, the recap wasn't unnecessary and the idea of Hide and Seek was well done.
Other than that, nothing interesting in this chapter. And Nulpting using Toge Toge no Mi-like magic wasn't too great. -

Volume 32 will start with 266 or 267, so I doubt that. Let's just go with that it was some waste of space or to give Mavis some more screentime now that Wendy isn't here.

Well, if I really look, it seems like a few of the Gray clones on the last couple of pages lack their Fairy Tail symbol. Could be me not looking hard enough, but even if they do lack the symbol and it's not a sloppy art mistake, the Gray clones around Juvia had the symbol, so it would not be a thing to recognize Gray by as not everyone lacks it.
So I probably don't know what you're talking about. Bother to tell us? :P

This chapter seems like it may have been the centerpiece of its magazine's promotion that week. It's perfectly plausible to use a brief bit of expo to pull in new readers. Besides, didn't FT used to start each chapter with a brief recap anyway?
