Enter 2018. In the United States, the unemployment level is only 1%, and the crime rate is lower than ever.
      How?

Because one night a year, for 12 hours, people are allowed to do whatever they want, without consequence.

"The Purge" is set to release May 31st of this year, and stars Lena Headey (Game of Thrones) and Ethan Hawke (Sinister)

The first trailer was released just a few days ago.

Honestly, it is definitely an interesting premise, and, even if it seems like the plot of the movie could have been easily avoided, (why leave your daughter alone in the very important security room?) it looks somewhat good. However since we're just now hearing about it, only eight weeks from release, I'm rather worried.

Writer / Director James DeMonaco hasn't really done anything of note outside of "The Negotiator*" so that also worries me.

All that said I'll still probably check it out during a matinee, unless it gets really good reviews.

*I am not saying that "The Negotiator" is a noteworthy movie.

I thought it would be starring pushpop.

It looks and sounds stupid as hell. But it could end up being fun at the very least.

lol how does that make any sense at all

why would unemployment go down if people could run wild 12 hours a year

i actually am more interested in viewing a movie that shows how exactly congress came to this decision and how the large majority of the population became a ragtag mix of sociopaths and psychopaths; the content of the movie is a step away from the Strangers, nothing too interesting (even the masks seem similar)

MY guess is there is a twist in that within this 12 hour, some sort of institution (probably established behind the scenes by the BIG BAD MIGHTY GOVERNMENT IN THE YEAR 2018) goes around and systematically eradicates a certain proportion of people (sorta to match the proportion of employable people with jobs). Within this institution they take a bunch of criminals, lobotimize them or something and make them into this particular institution's killing machines for the 12 hour of nonsense. When it's all done and over, folks all wonder "what happened?" and the government shrugs and says "I dunno. Random stuff just randomly happens during 12 hours. Who cares?" Hence that would explain both the lack of criminals running around (low crime rate) and the employment problem.

              shrug

Just a speculation, but this feels like one of those not so distant "future" movies where there is some sort of government conspiracy behind a seemingly pleasant scenario. I hope I'm wrong though…

Exactly. It's an interesting idea that the movie is doing the worst possible thing with. Really disappointing.
Still, a May 31st release means that the studio has some kind of faith in it.

Despite the dumb story, it looks like it'll be fun and suspensefull
