No, like fana said, there was a time when he redid them over and over and we don't know how long it lasted (it's true that 1h30 is a little long though)
Food Wars - It's In the Trash

he only redid for 2nd time…..
-
An attempt on making sense of timeline.
When Alice was going to her table, Soma was just finishing making his 2nd (considering 8 were already taken) batch and noticing his 1st batch is not moving much. Ikumi notices that Alice dish seems simple and unlikely to attract much customers. Which means she must not have made much traffic.
Soma'smonologue and thoughts.
After that,
Erina said he has 30 mins left and few panels later, it was shown Erina and Alice hitting 300 mark. Then Soma coming up with game changing idea. His monologue and thoughts timings coincides with Alice getting near 300 "customers". Could Alice have attracted 300 customers in just 5-10 minutes? Wouldn't that (Alice getting 300 in 5-10 minutes) be remarked by Doujima later when he was commenting on Soma's awesome cooking show and other 1st year chefs (she was just referred to have have quit with time remaining)?
Soma's inner monologue would perhaps have taken some time.

This is like a very insignificant, unimportant minor piece of plot to worry about

So if I understand the trans correctly…
! The girl on volume 1 comes back? I'm more excited about the focus of the other character that's not Soma instead but just asking here for someone to verify
And great poster by Tosh
-
Yes, she's back.
! But Nikumi stole the chapter, IMO.
-

poor girl got overwhelmed by Nikumi's…err...size....
-
Go ahead and call her Nikumi. Lmao
-
Just picked Soma up and caught up with it cause I got bored and thought why not.
Why haven't I touched this earlier? It's a gem amongst gems, wow. I think I might have squeed out of sheer glee a couple of times.
-
This page is my fav from the current chapter:
http://manga.casanovascans.com/reader/read/shokugeki_no_soma/en/0/35/page/20 -
Nikumi is 10x better than Erina.
-
Having Nikumi in it made the chapter an instant-win. Something tells me we're in for some hilarious scenes next week.
-
Kurase reminds me a tidbit too much of megumi. That whole lacking confidence shtick. But then we've seen very little of here so there is still room left to establish more amusing nuances in that. That said her confused face on the page before the last one was pretty funny.
I really like the pace in which soma decides to introduce it's characters and establish them. -
This color spread was in Jump Live if anyone is interested
-
dat camel toe. What did she taste there? Some sort of strawberry milkshake? lol
-
from Nikumi's short spin-off chapter in Jump Live
!
EDIT: Oh lol, I didn't even read two posts above.
-
…I want what she's having.
-
And I want her. Nikumi~ <3
-
more. More Nikumi.
!
-
^ Ah new chapter. And do you/whoever took that screenshot have some kind of raw manga app?
-
It's from the smartphone-only chapter, just like the above color image.
-
Can Nikumi get her own spin-off manga please? Like right now? Yeah?
-
Not having soma this week gets me more than not having an op chapter.
Which does not mean that I think it's better than op just that I'm currently just way more into this(it really switches depending on the events of the previous chapter). -
Something to hold you over then until next week
The Nikumi side story's been scanlated.
http://manga.casanovascans.com/reader/read/shokugeki_no_soma/en/0/35/5/page/2
Also apparently Shonen Jump Alpha is seriously considering the series to be added to the lineup (AssClass though seems to be a no though given the school/gun violence in recent years doesn't seem to fly)
-
i can't get enough of Nikumi…...
-
Reaffirming her seat as the best I see

Softporn OK, guns n' violence Not OK seems to be a polar opposite of usual American censor standards! :ninja:

Several pages of Nikumi and karaage make me hungry for meat…
Glorious chapter yet again.
-
Ahahahaha been a long time since I read any Soma.
The sequence of Soma's facial expressions after the scary lady declares he can't make it were fun.
And the karaage stripped Som and Nikumi in that one panel O.o that was … uh
But I do think this manga would benefit a lot from dropping the fanservice and the harem angle >_> and soon.
-
The fanservice is probably like half of the reason why people read this series. Of course the food art is just as delicious, but Tosh's great err… experience as a hentai artist is a pretty strong driving force.

If benefit means losing half its sales (if not more) in that context then yeah, it would benefit from it.
-
Yeah, I mean Soma is a pretty refreshing shounen series as is, but the fanservice does have a certain appeal for some people. Plus, to be honest, there a lot of fanservice shots that are actually pretty hilarious given the types of reactions people have in this series.
-
The fanservice is far and away my least favorite part of the series. Crazy facial out-there reaction to eating the food work without the pron, and its just kind of distracting from a well paced tension filled series with likeable characters.
Same problem I have with Ken Akamatsu's series. Getting the girls naked is such an overwhelming factor of the series that not only is it not sexy on the occassions where it could be special, but its distracting the rest of the time. (If they're half naked once every twenty chapters its a memorable moment. If they're naked on a weekly basis its nothing.)
That said, the artist does draw the ladies very, very well.
-
Well, lets just hope once Souma becomes a more established series in JUMP (I'm talking like umm… Toriko level maybe?), he'll start dropping the fanservice. For now, let those fanservices draw more readers to the series.
-
Off topic: Speaking of crazy over the top reactions, when are we gonna get that drawing Matsui was gonna do after eating Araki's pasta in Jojo's Kitchen?
-
Can't say I'm usually bothered by fan service but there certainly have been series that I've read where I had to roll my eyes a bit(for example history's strongest disciple kenichi).
I don't feel that way about soma though, to be honest most of those fan service shots I perceive as pretty comical and I've wondered how long that will last until the joke gets too old, but it hasn't happened yet. I also feel like the way it is used is somewhat part of the series identity. If you take them away from the way it is now the series wouldn't stand out as much in my opinion.
-
If benefit means losing half its sales (if not more) in that context then yeah, it would benefit from it.
You're intentionally making what would otherwise be a daft statement in order to draw my attention to the fact that Soma benefits in sales due to the fanservice.
But yeah that's obviously not what I was talking about.

Oh please explain it to me then. I'm dying to read your opinion.

Do you read a series for sales?
If no then it should have been pretty obvious when I refer to 'benefit' in a discussion like this I wasn't talking about sales.
If yes I cannot see the benefit in a discussion with you >_>

Manga benefits -> popularity increases -> better sales -> overall win for the manga-ka and fans
No?

Manga benefits -> popularity increases -> better sales -> overall win for the manga-ka and fans
No?
First of all, you're pretty much saying that quality = sales. That is, that a manga's quality as a work of art and fiction is directly and straightforwardly related to its sales. This is just no agreeable. For many reasons, a series can be 'good' and get canned because of low or mediocre sales and equally a series can actually sell fairly well without being particularly good. You only have to look at popular works in any media to see examples of each. In this particular field, a lot of series seem to basically use fanservice as a crutch to popularity ie "oh if we put a bit of light-censored nudity into every foodgasm (at least one per chapter) we'll get more popularity and sales [and money]". Similarly harem 'storylines' seem to be pretty popular and throwing that angle in along with the fanservice seems to generate some popularity so it's being done here … both of these are clearly effective tactics for procuring sales, but that doesn't mean they are a pro for the manga.
Personally I think it's an unpleasant crutch to use where it can be avoided. The fanservice doesn't really add anything to the series but could potentially reduce the impact of ... eh ... um ... 'sexy panels' which are actually being used for impact because the frequent fanservice desensitises the readership.
The harem thing just takes away from the characters. And characters are a pretty huge part of pretty much any series so it's always disappointing to see this.
The second thing is you're saying that better sales = a plus for both the mangaka and the fans. As far as sales are needed to ensure continuation, this is certainly true on both counts. But it is after that that this becomes disagreeable. Sure, the mangaka make more money if they sell better, so it's a benefit for them. And you expect profit to be a significant motivator up to a point. But I do nto see how that constitutes a win for fans. As long as it's enough for the series to be in continuous publication, sales are irrelevant to me, as a reader, in comparison to the quality of the manga itself.

- Usually good sales indicate a certain something going for the manga since the other option (hundreds of thousands of fans being idiots for buying it) is a fairly rare one. So yes, sales=quality is often the case (often(!), not always). And I agree that fanservice is a popular means when trying to appeal to a certain group of readers. But in SnS's case the fanservice is made part of the plot. It may sound weird, but given the context it's used in it's perfectly fine. These particular drawings emphasize the magnificent taste of a dish. They also are used in a somewhat comical way, shifting the reader's attention away from the fanservice as a standalone aspect. Simply put- fanservice works for this series without making it any worse.
- So far the harem bit hasn't reached a state where it 'takes away from the characters'. Sure, Nikumi and Erica act a little differently when around Souma but otherwise they still behave the way we first experienced them in.
- The overall win for both the author and the fans was referring to the author earning money and the fans reading a better story due to whatever caused the popularity to increase.
Whether you like the fanservice is a different story and something I can't change. It's part of this manga and one can either love or hate it.

I don't think you understand what plot is.
That aside, the effect of 'emphasising the taste' is definitely numbed when it happens like … all the time. It's not there for effect. It's there for fanservice, plainly. There are elements of these foodgasms that are actually effective in the way elements are included (like a sea theme or a plant theme or whatever) which does kind of convey a sense of the taste in imagery, which is quite nice. But the fanservice is definitely just fanservice.
- So far the harem bit hasn't reached a state where it 'takes away from the characters'. Sure, Nikumi and Erica act a little differently when around Souma but otherwise they still behave the way we first experienced them in.
This is like an acknowledgement that it will be terrible in the future. And Nikumi went from the badass antagonistic meat girl into a Soma fangirl overnight. She was called upon in this Karaage story as the 'meat girl' but actually she has only been there to create a kind of contrast with the other girl. Oh, and it's not like the comical "how can I compete with that girl" is stemmed from just confusion, since Nikumi is going through this "I'm not alone with him grawr" thought process at the same time. Yes, we are definitely already seeing the harem significantly at play and Nikumi's presence in this arc is showing little positive about her character.
- The overall win for both the author and the fans was referring to the author earning money and the fans reading a better story due to whatever caused the popularity to increase.
Annnnd the cheap popularity choices made do not make for a better series. And the popularity of Soma doesn't really seem to stem from the 'story haha. Or even the characters.
And it's disappointing because the story's good, and the characters COULD be great.
Whether you like the fanservice is a different story and something I can't change. It's part of this manga and one can either love or hate it.
And we're back to square one haha.
-
Yep, we aren't going to see eye to eye on this one. That much is apparent now.
-
Quality is abstract and subjective, while popularity (through ratings and sales) is quantifiable.
The former leaves room for argument, the latter does not.As for people complaining about fan service, you're entirely missing the point.
Sensual/Erotic cooking/eating is a preexisting genre of its own (has no one read Ajinosuke or Taberudake?). This series simply takes a very well structured shounen battle manga spin on it.
Saying fanservice is "distracting" or wishing the series to leave it out, is like saying "Gourmet theme is fucking stupid in Toriko I wish they'd remove it" or asking for One Piece to stop having adventure. It's a core premise of the series, if you don't like the aspect, then simply it's just not meant for your taste.
