This is a feeling that has been spreading ever since several high profile action cartoons have been cancelled. Do you feel action cartoons are becoming a rarity in the west?
Do you feel Action Cartoons are going extinct? (In the West)

If you're referring to Young Justice and the Green Lantern series getting canned, then that's due to shitty scheduling and hiatuses. It's not that action cartoons are going extinct, it's that the high profile networks that own them suck at keeping a consistent schedule, then can them after their ratings (surprisingly) bomb…
-
I know. You are right. I WAS going to put that I did doubt it but I didnt.
Also, Motorcity and Tron got canned too.
-
Well, I haven't had cable in about two years, so I've only been following Young Justice online. It does suck when a good cartoon falls through the cracks or gets prematurely cancelled to make way for live-action and/or comedy shows, but that's something that can't be helped, really (since petitions rarely make a difference)…
-
Young Justice was cancelled to make way for LIVE ACTION!?
…Poop
-
Let's not forget Sym-Bionic Titan and Thundercats.
Anyway, I wouldn't say that action shows are going extinct, just that recently they've been having shorter lifespans due to shitty scheduling.
-
Young Justice's cancellation is probably more due to the fact that Teen Titans Go! is going to air later this Spring, as well as the new CG Batman cartoon, and CN doesn't want the properties clashing, given that they share some characters (though lack of toy sales was probably a factor, too)…
-
Actually, I've been wondering that myself as of late. Good majority of the toons nowadays down here are mostly comedy oriented with a few scat moments of tension. But yeah when it comes to full on action shows, they don't seems to last so long. They seem to get the worst of schedules where they can barely be viewed with little to no reruns or hardly any promotion. I suppose you can say the economy since shows like this require more animation and doing it on a weekly basis can be money draining especially the more detailed ones. Or of course networks fearing the wrath of the FCC. Or maybe network don't believe in them much like they used too. Who knows.

Now Im sad all over again.

I still miss Batman: The Brave and Bold…
-
Young Justice and Green Lantern haven't been cancelled, I just saw both last Sunday at like 10:00 or 11:00 am (although Young Justice now has the title Invasion added to it).
-
They're still airing, but only until the episodes already produced run out…
Sorry my mistake, I've been seeing commercials for them all time on CN for their DC Nation block and thought they were still on-going.

You can blame the success of Adventure Time and My Little Pony: FiM for some of that. Bright colorful wacky adventure slice of life cartoons doing phenomenally well? (And in 11 minute chunks in AT's case?) Compared to action series that are basically a dime a dozen and scheduled badly?
Its a natural trend, these things always come and go. We had a whole bunch of action cartoons for about 2 years, which were then scheduled badly and ate at each other.
The success of Avatar and the new Ninja Turtles shows there's still a place for them… when they're scheduled and promoted correctly. Its mostly the guys at Cartoon Network and Disney (and their toy lines...) have no idea what they're doing.
And hell, Ben 10 is on its umpteenth season.
Nobody even blinked when The Secret Saturdays came and went... and no one even knows Robotomy existed.

As beloved and popular MLP:FiM is, I dont think it has THAT much influence on TV Execs. It is The Hub's biggest hit,but remember its not a very popular channel,as much as I hate to admit it. And The Hub has semi-successes with action like Transformers Prime(That's bound to be popular) and,to a lesser extent, Kaijudo Rise of the Duel Masters.

Another problem aside from mismanagement, is that they try to advertise the hell out of their live-action shows, most of them only last for one or two seasons. I know that they're trying to compete with the live-action blocks on Disney and Nick, but they can never get the hint that these shows don't work for the demographic that there trying to attract. In fact it seems like there confused with their demographic, since they air shows with subtle adult themes like Regular Show and the short lived Robotomy, but air them together with shows aimed toward young children like the Incredible Crew, which is ending up to be just as bad as Dude what would Happen.

It's getting ratings that are better than many cable shows, despite most households not having it, and the comic book outsold every mainstream comic the first month it came out.
Execs HAVE taken note.

This problem is not only in America, recently i have wirtten an action cartoon which i sent to the production studios in the UK and they have replied with usually the same three problems.
1. The dying animation industry in UK which is why less and less cartoons are made in the UK. It's cheaper for the networks to just buy them off someone esle.
2. Cartoons that have more animation (action) cost more, things like young justice and Boondocks can't compete with the simpler shows like Annoying Orange or Arthur where they can make an entire season with less budget than 2 episodes. (money wise).
3. Bitchy parents and MUH INNOCENT CHILDREN. Anything with violence is killed off with tons of parents switching off the t.v. from their kids. ( I wonder what would happen if DBZ aired now) -
It airs,DBZ airs On Nicktoons AND The CW.
-
None of it can live up to the DCAU anyway. Besides, why bother with action cartoons when we can have more original Canadian cartoons?
-
a year ago, you'd probably say action cartoons are taking over
it's just going through it's natural cycle
