Awww. Oh well.
Kishi and Kubo drawings look so uninspired for godsake. Cloud's expression looks as bland as Nomira's dissidia. Squall looks too much like Ichigo wtf is with his expression.
I would have expected FF9 from Oda, an Auron drawn by Oda would have been epicness.
Akira Toriyama doing a Final Fantasy XI story would be pretty rad from the looks of it.

They didn't really draw these, fans drew them in their style.
But I find it very hilarious that the fans chose FF7 (teenage angst and massive overhype to the point of retardation) for Kishi and FF8 (one giant Rescue Arc) for Kubo, bravo.
ah. i'm kinda glad it's fan based then. I wasn't too keen on "oda's" pic. and i was disapointed with FF6's pic. sorry. not my style. a lot of the other ones look cool though
That FFIII one looks more RAVE than One Piece anyway.
! So I just found out that Shadow is permanently dead because I didn't wait for him at the end of the floating continent.
On a different note, here's various Jump artists drawing Final Fantasy pictures: http://staves.tumblr.com/post/17416776615
That Terra scares me.
That's some damn good mimicing, wow.

Aw I know how this feels. Why couldn't have been Cyan or that stupid animal kid having to stay behind
I don't think there IS a main character I dislike.
Finally got the plat on XIII-2. Most of it was as guessed to be pretty bland. I guess I got my moneys worth out of the game but even then most of it was kinda pointless. The post game is about the same time length as the main game. I finished the plat with 55 hours on the clock (and 25 hours to reach the end game)
The problem I have is that like I said before, its clear even in the end game that the game is unfinished. 5 hours of it is fetch quests and the rest is grinding and luck events. About 12 fragments (need 160) are quiz ones. Which REQUIRES a guide since 90% of the questions are stuff that isn't covered in the game. Think that's bad? It's worse. Added to these quizes is random luck based questions. So you just managed to get through those annoying questions? These'll pop up and probably make you have to start over. After those quizes are done a captain quiz guy appears in various places…invisible. And the Acadamia level (every Acadamia level is a pain in the ass btw. Despite it supposedly being a town) is pretty much a maze. So annoying.
Then you have the casino based ones. A trophy which requires you to get so much profit from the slot machines and a fragment which appears randomly. I put it on auto and then left it overnight, came back and still didn't have either. Was ridiculous.
Other stuff like having to go a certain distance on Chocobos, fighting EVERY monster and a whole host of other silly things just makes the game feel incomplete and for to get 100% it's just pointless grinding and other uncessesary tasks. At least a lot of XIII had goals for you. Like usually by end game you're unable to damage the Adamantoises that wanted the Grand Pulse and it was a nice accomplishment of being able to finally pwn them. This doesn't really have that.
So.. is FFXIII corridors the game like everyone on the internet has been saying?
Are they even worth playing?
All I want is a next gen RPG that plays like an old school one. Ya know, with set classes, lots of adventure, huge maps, and characters that DON'T make me want to throw up in my mouth.
I should note that I did return XII because Vaan was completely unenjoyable (and an idiot), the battle system didn't help either.
I'm loving IX though, except for those load times during battle intros.

Xenoblade Chronicles is the one you want. Maybe not so much on the classes (everyone is different playsyle tho)
XIII is…mmm...well yes it's linear but if I'm honest once you hit the world area that part of the game is pretty enjoyable. Chars are a mixed bunch. Sazh is pretty awesome. Fang and Lightning were decent too. Vanille was ok....Snow and Hope are just annoying tho. Hope is whiny and unlikeable. Snow is pretty much the bishie who is full of himself and generally annoying.
But really, next gen JRPGs are kinda meh. Xenoblade is easily the best one out there. And then Nier. Resonance of Fate and Star Ocean are pretty decent too. Tales of Graces F is getting a release pretty soon. As is Last Story (in Europe) really the only thing that final fantasy has anymore is the name.
Would Persona 4 count as a next-gen JRPG even though it's on the PS2?
Would Persona 4 count as a next-gen JRPG even though it's on the PS2?
I wouldn't say so. Cus then you have to say that the likes of Dragon Quest VIII, Suikoden 5 etc are all next gen too.
Well actually. None of them are next gen now that we have the Wii U coming out XD More like current gen (360, PS3, Wii)
Would Persona 4 count as a next-gen JRPG even though it's on the PS2?
I've always wanted to play that, too bad my PS3 has no backwards compatability, and my bro sold the family PS2. :/
thanks for the review Cyber-Robin… I might rent FFXIII. I can't bring myself to pay for an RPG that short.
Well, after beating and doing most of the sidequests on FFXII (there's no fucking way I'm fighting Yiazmat or Omega Mk. XII) I'm finally playing FFIX for the first time.
Gotta admit, I find the card game frustrating, but I'm sure it'll grow on me.
Why even bother with the card game though? Nothing really forces you to do so, except maybe one story event

I dunno, I've only played about 10 minutes of the game. I just assumed that was going to be a fairly major part of it.
Well, good to know.

XIIII is long. XIII-2 is short tho. Problem with XIII is it's a straight line till about the 25 hour mark
So…I haven't played Final Fantasy XIII, but what would everyone want out of Final Fantasy XV when it finally releases?
I also have a hard time thinking Final Fantasy XIV'll do that well. In the west, it hast to compete with WoW. In Japan, it'll have to compete with Dragon Quest X which is a much more popular franchise in Japan.

Final Fantasy XIV has already completely failed here.
The MMO Market has been thriving here for years and all of the things games like WoW have introduced permanently to the medium are changes that Western games aren't willing to settle for less than in new MMOs. The best shot Squenix had was at launch, that's always the case with MMOs. But in failing to have FFXIV live up to the standard of even Final Fantasy XI, which they finally got right after years and years of tweaks, Square effectively wasted millions of dollars on a game nobody wants to play. The completely regressive game they released kind of went to show just how much they underestimated Western markets - yet again, once again. In competition with World of Warcraft, The Old Republic and Guild Wars 2? Other online games that'll be coming out soon, like Diablo III? Even over there it has to contend with monsters like Monster Hunter and God Eater, let alone the upcoming Dragon Quest X. Square doesn't stand a… ghost of a chance. They wanted to tap into the constant money flow of games with online subscription models but didn't put in the polish to make their game attractive. The result is as you see.

Sounds grueling. I can't fathom how that square studio has not caught up with modern gamestandarts.
I especially think that making someone grind is always bad design.
Grinding as a mechanic should be a choice and the reward is obviously more power than you would have normally at that point in a game.
As for actual rewards of quest completion or bonus item aquirement should always come in the form of a challenge mechanic.
Really, these are two philosophies should be ingrained into every gamedesigner by now.
It's really time that Final Fantasy gets dethroned and forgotten, let some other JRPG get that much spotlight, that said there really are none that are breaking the mold in a very jaw dropping way right now. (at least to my knowledge)
I dunno, I've only played about 10 minutes of the game. I just assumed that was going to be a fairly major part of it.

The card game is just there for the cardgame's sake. Once you get the hang of it its not a bad sidequest thing, but outside of one story event its completely optional… and even that story event pretty much lets you cheeze right through. (Particularly if you save between rounds.) I think theres an item or two you can only get from playing the game, but nothing amazing or worth the time if you don't want to mess with it.
So…I haven't played Final Fantasy XIII, but what would everyone want out of Final Fantasy XV when it finally releases?
A good story, characters and combat system, with an expansive world full of variety to explore.
FF4, 6, 7 or 9 are pretty much the tentpoles to shoot for in that regard. Unless it wants to be a job class game.
Final Fantasy XIV is already dead.
Once again I note that it should never have been a part of the numbered franchise. It should have been "Final Fantasy Online" and "Final Fantasy Online : Blargety Blarg". Never should have been FF11 or 14.

Wait. It already released? I don't even remember hearing about it in the news. That….certainly doesn't speak well of the game. Looks up online Apparently, they're doing some kind of 2.0 release...
I'd have to agree that an expansive world is probably the most important to me. Along with a good story, I also really enjoy having a good bit of fun side-missions and characters that help expand the world as well as are just fun to have included.
FFXV wish list:
@My:
Active Time Battle
World Map Exploration
Challenge level of SNES era games
The old gang of monsters and summons
Less is more: I'd trade bigger locations with a dull design, for memorable smaller locations. I don't mind "screens".
A cast as likeable as FF9
Sidequests other than just fighting more monsters
Plot is forwarded more than every two hours
Mostly I just want control of the partys actions to be placed 100% in my hands.
Almost finished disc 1 of FFIX and thus far I have two major complaints.
1: That has the be the bleakest dullest overworld ever. Certainly doesn't fill me with a sense of adventure.
2: Man, am I sick of having to wait through 5 seconds of sweeping camera shots for a battle to begin. Just put me straight into the battle (I guess this is probably due to the loading time, but it's something they should've fixed before releasing it).
Other than that, it's a pretty solid game.

@Schwerer:
You disagree?
I don't know what game you're playing dude, but for me it's dark, it's grimy, Zidane doesn't move fluidly, it's got a relatively low draw distance. It's like everything's been covered by some kind of dirty filter.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Looking bad, I guess the overworld's actually not bad when it's sunny, but when it's dark and cloudy it's just unpleasant.
You disagree?

You are the first person I've ever heard that didn't call it cheerful, colorful and bright. Particularly the characters who are dressed in bright colors and are cheerful and upbeat for 98% of the game. The cities and dungeons are pretty diverse and colorful, but I guess you haven't been to a lot of them yet by disk one.
I would not describe it as dark, grimy and bleak, certainly not when you have FF 7 and 8 to compare it to.
Zidane doesn't move fluidly, it's got a relatively low draw distance.
Well, it is a 12 year old PS1 game?
But if those are your biggest problems with the game, then not too bad.
I'd say I greatly disagee but Robby already covered its defense well enough.
Hell it really could be bleak out and Over the Hills would have me happy as a clam.
Seriously how could anyone find anything gloomy with this whimsical eargasm accompanying their travels
My mind is just trying to reconcile this
with gloomy.
I could only the imagine the reaction if I were to critize something as trivial as a flower.

You do realize I'm only talking about the overworld map, right? I got no problems with the cities; they're great (I partcularly love Lindblum). It's just the overworld map that's kind of disappointing to me.
I mean, am I losing my fucking mind?
You're telling me that 9:08 onwards is bright and cheerful?
And I want to stress that I still think this is a great game. It's just those two issues I think are fairly distracting.
Ah. Just the map, I guess I can see that? checks video On the MIST CONTINENT? Oh, that's intentional there.
The entire world map isn't like that.
It's kind of hard to look at the map with dismay, because whenever I hear 'Crossing Those Hills', I immediately hear 'Melodies of Life'. And whenever I hear Melodies of Life, I just end up crying happy tears.
Final Fantasy 9 is love.
…Isn't the grimy map on disc 1 a plot point?
Please do not talk about such classy games like FFIX… I become tears in my eyes thinking back the time I was able to fly arounda map and discover some great cities and hidden locations... And ever till the last PSOne game Final Fantasy is going down...
Maybe I'm just too old... But I prefer the old games (Mostly Vi, VII, VIII, IX) million times over the new ones...

No, that's pretty much everyone, as the dismal sales of 13-2 are showing.
The PSP games are pretty good tho. Looking forward to Type-0.
Also curious about Final Fantasy Versus XIII… given that it was announced SIX YEARS AGO and still doesn't even have a japanese release date.
What I don't understand… Why the whole flying around in a free world was scrapped after all... The consoles should be able to do it after all seeing Skyrim... It just isn't getting in my mind
Like back then in FFVII searching for Vincent's cave, Yuffie or the weapons... In FFXIII the whole Kaktus stuff and wepons... Final Fantasy IX even more...
This was one of the best stuff int he whole games and gave you plenty of hours of actual gameplay... Now it is just go to save point - chose location and you are there in a linear level...
XI was also really good if you could get past the fact that you couldn't do anything but the simplest of things by yourself past level 10, unless they were in zones 20 levels lower than you. It was definitely a group event game, and group events took at least 18 people (one event took 60+), and those events took hours to do. Definitely not a solo game. But the story was good and the diversity of the classes was decent enough.
Now, I'm not so sure, since the level cap is 99 and all the old content is now soloable, but it was level cap 75 for the longest time and was a very difficult endgame.
So yeah, everyone, sorry for pissing on your god, I guess.
I'll get back to you all once I've finished or mostly finished the game.

You're a monster and you know it.
Not as bad as Kitsune, at least.
FFXI has the best plot that no one ever got to see. Seriously what I ever got to make it through was phenomenal. The above poster is right in that it's mostly a group endeavor, though last I played adjustments made it more than feasible to solo all the way to 50 if not beyond with enough tenacity. You pretty much run these things called Battle Regimens inside the various dungeons and there are a few that make leveling just an incredible breeze.
Late to this discussion, but I agree with the gloominess of FFIX. Sure, the colors are bright and cheery, but good lord, the Vivi storyline is perhaps the gloomiest thing in the whole damned series. Add in the complete destruction of several happy cities (complete with plenty of happy citizens biting the big one) and I think it's a fair point.
Still hoping Theatrhythm gets a western release. It looks really cool and I love the art style and music.
@RobbyBevard:
OHGOD!!
Hahahahah!
