I just thought of something.
I wonder if tiny Ace knew that Luffy's hat was originally Roger's? Or if he knew Shanks had been in Roger's crew?
He certainly must have found out once he actually met Shanks.
…Does Luffy know he has Roger's hat!?

Sorry about this long post! >.< Just wanted to post some thoughts of my own XD
The discussion about feelings and reactions regarding the recent revelations about Roger and Luffy's similiarities are really interesting.
First, of lineage and relations. What I like about One Piece is perhaps the fact that a lineage doesn't guarantee you power. What I mean to say is Luffy being Dragon's son and Garp's grandson didn't give him any cheap power and any advantage to other people. His father never even saw Luffy… much less help him. Though he did once in Loguetown. However I acknowledge Luffy got a lot of help due to his father's connections but this was only shown from the Impel Down arc. I found it a bit cheap that Iva was conveniently a friend of Dragon so he was willing to help Luffy. However, it was also very logical for that situation as Luffy was really unfortunate as he did not have his precious crew with him.
How about his similarity to Roger?
I'm almost always touched to see some parallels between them and whenever a character is reminded of Roger when they see Luffy. It's not like Luffy is becoming a copy of Roger, but rather Luffy has the certain traits that made people respect and admire Roger. Like perhaps for example, recklessness and fearlessness when it comes to doing something they want regardless of the consequences. I find this really touching because the OP World seemed to have lost a great person (Roger) and seeing Luffy brings smiles to people who were saddened by this event.
I find this very cool as well as Luffy gains the approval of people who were associated with Roger and acknowledges him and his dream even before he accomplishes it. (People calling him Pirate King and such even before he reaches Raftel). It's this support that truly sets him apart from his rivals and other Pirate King wannabes. It's also cool as it's not like he seeks this kind of recognition and approval from people, but rather people go to him and are attracted to his personality.
Luffy isn't unique in this sense though as Blackbeard (his most worthy rival) also has this ability to attract people (the kind of people that Luffy will gladly beat though...). Blackbeard attracts the bad people and Luffy attracts the good natured ones.
Luffy's Training (as well as the crews)
Training has always been important to make someone stronger. What I hate most is heroes or characters that are just too great and gifted... coz the author says so. Luffy wasn't at all gifted from the start. He simply had a dream and at such a young age he realized he needed to be strong to even TRY for that dream. Hence the reason he waited 10 years before going out into the sea. The time skip isn't the first training Luffy had... it was even before he became a pirate.
What I have appreciated about Luffy's growth is Oda made a lot of ways for Luffy to grow emotionally and physically without ALWAYS blatantly using a training arc. He also used their experience as a crew to bring forth their growth and development which was very sweet to watch as it unfolds.
However, slowly, I find that as the story revealed more of its world, it wasn't just about becoming a Pirate King but rather his desire to achieve freedom to roam the seas to do his adventures (something true pirates desire perhaps? This reminded me of Jack Sparrow). With this dream came the possibility of changing the world (not necessarily saving it ... as cliche as some story brings) though Luffy doesn't necessarily desire this.
This is where I find the big difference and interesting bit about Roger and Luffy. Luffy aims to achieve what Roger achieved but it seems he is being destined to do something more. Whether or not he will be _able_ to do that, is the main question which every character that decided to support Luffy is anticipating.
Was it so cheap that he got trained by Rayleigh?
I find the answer, No. It wasn't like Rayleigh decided to help Luffy right after they met. It wasn't like Luffy asked Rayleigh to train him either. Rayleigh was curious to meet Luffy though to see what kind of person he is. I believe if he hadn't witnessed Luffy punching the Tenryuubito for Hachi and risking everything to save his brother, he would have never considered training Luffy.
Because of what Luffy did, Rayleigh realized his potential (I imagine this as his ability to do something about the true history and WG)… it was only after this that he prolly decided he needs to help this person become strong.
I was never disappointed with their training because it seemed so imperative. It wasn't simply a matter of defeating a particular "boss" in an arc that brought about this training. It was a matter of SURVIVAL. They can't just go merrily in their ship going wherever they please. And it also shows that Luffy's dream isn't a matter of race or time as well. There are scary people out there that are after the same thing. But what I love about this struggle is that sense of dread that I feel for the OP world whenever I think that it's Blackbeard not Luffy that will get to "One Piece". And I find Blackbeard has an equal chance as Luffy if you think about it given that his plans went accordingly in the war and he got two devil fruits now.
Oda showed the terrifying power of the "strongest" people. What I loved most is when he called them "strongest" he really meant it and showed the difference in their level. Not just come cheap tactic to make the reader feel suspense or what. He established the hierarchy of the world really well and you get to see Luffy's position and also look forward to his growth. That way, when he finally beats these strong people it's satisfying to watch.
Do u even research? Akainu got one of his Magma punches blocked by Shanks sword infused with Haki. If it were not for Haki Shanks sword would melt and he would have been killed.
CoA creates an invisible amour that can nullify DF powers.
Yes, Luffy with only Haki would beat a Luffy with only DF because Haki nullifies DF powers. Why can't u understand this simple rule? How many times has Oda shown non DF users like Garp and Sentamaru kicking Luffy's ass with just Haki.

I don't know whose post you are replying to, but:
Haki doesn't nullify DF power, otherwise BB wouldn't risk his future waiting in WB's ship to obtain Yami. Haki just allows Haki user to damage the body of DF user, like Light or Rubber.
CoA defend against anything in general, like Magma in general, not just magma from Akainu.
It's not like Haki can turn Chopper into a 100% reindeer but Yami is supposed to be able to do that.
Too long for me, I pass…
I wonder if we'll get a more in-depth explanation of haki in the future. I've always wondered if two people are using CoA are they both just able to hit each or can the other person CoA be so strong that they easily defend against other Haki users.
For example if Garp and Shanks how useful is both of their haki since they both are very capable of using it but don't necessarily need to use it to fight each other.
I know this is all theory and speculation at the moment and I'm not really looking for any answers but I just find that aspect of haki vs haki very interesting.
I'm gonna go read that chapter where Rayleigh explains it to see if there is anything I might be able to figure out.
@bartholemew:
but no-one else who goes to the new world gets to train with the best of the best, it also makes me wonder how the roger crew became so strong if they never had anyone to help them to this extent.
im not as dissapionted with the training as i am with the straw hat being rogers.
rayleigh didn't teach luffy some forbidden hidden ultimate technique like say in Veritas, or The Breaker.
Luffy had unlocked the three forms, but was clueless in them. Rayleigh just showed him the quick ropes then left and let him do his own. It is like hunter hunter, they were taught what this nen, or haki is, but then the rest was to their own ingenuity.
also strawhat being destiny to be pirate king? what the fuck are you morons smoking. Roger was seen NOT wearing the hat WAY before he ever became pirate king. Shanks never became. No one has been pirate king with that hat yet.
i wouldn't be surprised now if luffy gives the hat to someone else later int eh series, after shanks tells him to keep it. it isn't some form of declaring new pirate king its just them passing on something to inspire future generation. Its just like your dad giving you his dads watch or something. just some heirloom passed on. There is no connection between luffy and roger, it is purely still just shanks and luffy. this isn't an indirect way of roger somehow choosing luffy. this was just roger had chosen or seen somethign in shanks and gave him his hat as i said some kind of inspiration, and shanks did the same to luffy. shanks wasn't passing on some roger dream to luffy. he wasn't going "sorry roger i couldn't do it, but i think luffy will" Roger didn't give shanks the hat and say "the true owner of this hat will someday come to be and when you find him give it to him" its nothing stupid like that. there is no destiny in the hat.

Great x 5 !
Some people brought up that Coribou could have a Tar DF. This is rather unlikely considering that tar is pretty much the blackest liquid so it being drawn white would make no sense.
Some said cement. It's very difficult that it be a Cement Logia, since it's hardly what you could call a naturally occurring element. It could be a Cement Paramecia, but the fact that he could replace his body with cement would go against that.
My theory, he's a Quicksand man, Paramecia. Defensively he'd be a very strong Paramecia since he would retain the properties of quicksand in his body, and be able to suck attacks in. It would also go well with his burying and suffocating fetish, and would also explain why he didn't phase the ball but absorbed it. It remains to be seen if he can also create his quicksand element, or if he simply became quicksand to suffocate that Marine. Another possibility is that he can create the quicksant but not control it. But so far he has not unambiguosly met the three requirments of a Logia, and the fact that he didn't spit the cannonball out would favour this theory.

I can see your whole point, its true that the Lineage bullshit is in One Piece, which is very disappointing (a lot of Mangas like doing this shit, for some reason)
However, some things:
Rayleigh training Luffy is hardly something bad, the disappointing thing is that he trained Luffy not because of his resolve to be the best but more because of Gol D Roger and his hat, if you get what I mean (He even commented on Luffy's destiny).
Meanwhile, there's nothing absolutely wrong about Zoro being trained by Mihawk, for example, Mihawk trained Zoro due to his resolve to be the best in the world, and that's fine.
It simply makes it feel more realistic, it wouldn't really be as realistic if Luffy just managed through sheer resolve to beat the best, it makes sense that he had some strong persons to help him out.
Its not like its a concept that has been thrown at you out of nowhere, as bullshit as it is, it has been foreshadowed for quite some time, I started suspecting it on LogueTown in the "smilling death" scene and got it pretty much confirmed when Kureha commented on Gold Roger being actually called Gol D. Roger.
Don't get me wrong, its bullshit, and I hate it too, but its just one negative aspect in a manga full of awesome aspects. Even with all the destiny BS, it still has all the action, all the adventure, all the awesome designs, all the originality, etc, so I don't see why you should start getting bored of this manga just because of one (admittedly boring, cliché and stupid) concept.
Straw hats are back. Oda didn't disappoint and unlike others has a damn good record of not disappointing

Where was this stated, or even hinted at? I'm pretty sure he offered to train Luffy because not only has Shanks, likely Rayleigh's own pupil, expressed that he believes in Luffy greatly but he himself has seen what kind of man Luffy is. I don't think it has anything to do with the hat.

he did not train luffy because of roger. yes he saw similarities im sure. but it all started with shanks.
shanks and rayleigh were crewmates and good freidns. shanks talked about luffy with rayleigh. its the same as like getting a job, luffy had a recomendation in shanks.
then luffy did things like the auction house, impel down, and marineford. he also had that answer of what he though pirate king was that rayleigh likes.
So it came down to
1. Shanks recomendation
2. Good Interview (pirate king line)
3. showed his resolve and determination in Auction/Impel Down/Marineford
Thats why he trained luffy. not because of roger.
"There may be no such thing as coincidences in this world. It seems like everything that happened was inevitable. Destiny is slowly deliberately taking its shape…"

Rayleigh has always been commenting on Luffy's likeness with Roger, if it wasn't the main aspect, it was at least one of the main aspects for Rayleigh to bother to train someone for 1 year and half
Even if that was wrong, the fact remains that Luffy has all the destiny behind him to become the new Pirate King
"There may be no such thing as coincidences in this world. It seems like everything that happened was inevitable. Destiny is slowly deliberately taking its shape…"
All that means is that he thinks Luffy is going to be the one to become the PK, that he believes in him. I don't see how that means he offered to train Luffy because of the hat. You're looking too much into it.

Come on, dude, you gotta be kidding me if you don't see the clear Destiny.
The whole Will of D. should have tipped you off, you really have no excuses not to see the fact that Luffy is the destined one

he saws similarities in teh things luffy SAID and DID.
he wasn't like "wow with that hat on you look like roger, come here let me show you how to beat up everyone in the world"
Lebron James or Kobe byrant are always compared ot michael jordan. its from what they do, not because they wore air jordans when playing basketball.
is luffy the one roger was waiting for? yes he is. was luffy destined from birth to be this man? no he f*ing wasn't. Luffy earned all he did, he did not magically becoe this destined child by being born or recieving a hat.
rayleigh didn't train luffy cause he was the ONE he was waiting for. i doubt rayleigh expected to ever train smoeone when he retired. but luffy inspired him to train him from his DEEDS, not his hat.

i think that the "D" surname and the marines all have something to do with the forgiven century nobody knows about….. thats why they where so paranoic of killing ace and now luffy... im shure! (not really )

I agree with all what you say, but remembered that Shanks gave luffy this precious hat because he saw something in him that made him different from the rest.might be that he is the same type of person as Gold roger and Shanks… remember what said Mihawk, Luffy has the greatest power on earth, the power to make friendship with others and be a great leader (more less like Naruto )
Come on, dude, you gotta be kidding me if you don't see the clear Destiny.

**I never said anything about destiny, I don't know why you even brought it up. I said Rayleigh did not decide to train Luffy because of the hat. The hat had absolutely nothing to do with anything. He decided to train Luffy because Shanks expressed how strongly he believes in Luffy with what he told Rayleigh plus the fact that he gave Luffy his treasure and because Luffy impressed him at Shabondy with his words and actions.
Also sure, destiny plays a certain role but nothing has been handed to Luffy on a silver platter. He isn't who he is because it's his destiny, rather it's his destiny because he is who he is. He still works for everything, and the "supernatural" role destiny plays is almost nonexistent so I don't see a problem.**
Awesome chapter~
I really loved the underwater looks.
I thought that Couribou guy was a logia of : coalhada when I first saw him…But it might be cement/concrete...
I don't get what the big deal is with the Hat. It's not like it's a power-up.
Shanks never became Pirate King meaning hat power-up/destiny = fail
The Pirate King's bloodline has been defeated. Ace lost to Blackbeard before Blackbeard got Whitebeard's DF. Not to mention he had Whitebeard to mold him who was the strongest guy in the world so being related to someone does not make you instantly strong.
Luffy is Dragon's son. Last time I checked Dragon has never been Pirate King so it doesn't mean Luffy will be.
Luffy has been getting his butt kicked a lot since OP started.
-Nami help him beat Buggy 1st time they fought (lol)
-Buggy was about to kill Luffy and Dragon saved him (lol…Buggy is too strong)
-Smoker was about to capture Luffy and Dragon saved Luffy again
-Crocodile surely would have killed Luffy had it not been for Robin. Luffy was not even in Crocodile's league.
-Aokiji surely could have destroyed the crew but he didn't. Although he pretty much beat the entire crew by himself.
-The CP9 could have killed the whole crew the first time they fought them
-Sentomaru, Pacifistas, and Kizaru pwned the crew for free
-Magellan would have killed Luffy but Mr. 2 and Ivankov saved him.
-Luffy had no business at that war and was completely outclassed. Had it not been for Hancock, The Whitebeard Pirates, Ivankov, Jimbei, Law, Shanks and most importantly Buggy (lol) Luffy would have surely got killed by Akainu.
Lineage is BS and I don't feel like Oda has feed that crap to us like other mangas. If only for the purpose of saving him but never to beat someone.
We should be appreciating the greatness that Mangakami Goda not whining about a hat.

Dragon only saved Luffy once. There is not enough evidence to prove that strike of lightning was Dragon's doing. We don't even know what his powers are, we can only make assumptions. Seems like wind power or something similar, but that's speculation.

re-read bro. it's there.
Bullshit my Lady. IT IS NOT THERE. What the hell is wrong with you ? He answers "Wthat if" to the Question.. Somebody should learn to read…

I do see people why about lineage and destiny also though and my post explains that all that stuff is crap. Also even look at the D's that died like Saul and Ace. Luffy is not beating everyone cause his lineage and destiny and IMO the only people he really beat was Enel and Moira.
To anyone calling lineage bullshit: it works that way in the real world, too =.=" People born to parents that never did anything spectacular are not necessarily limited by them, but people born to spectacular parents will quite often grow to be as spectacular or moreso, especially if they are not spoiled. Natural strength or natural brains are, in fact, genetics =.=" It's quite obvious that the family of "D" has ridiculously good genetics for strength and ambition (to a small extent, personality is also determined by genetics, though of course how you are raised also has a large impact), so it's obvious that such characters will be incredible.
And in the mangas where this lineage "bullshit" exists, the main characters are almost never spoiled.
D. = Destiny ??? S**T The Giant Who helped Robin to escape from Ohara just died and he had the D. in the name… Cool Destiny :getlost: Really something... Really... Really cool destiny... :getlost:
I think Dragon raised the storm intentionally or unintentionally but yes, lightning striking the platform was just Luffy's dumb luck. As said, Monkey D. Boa's point is valid anyway.
And Luffy having the hat is just incredible coincidence which some people call destiny. I don't know which term is correct…

Scorpion Secret Death Rock
What I am about to tell is top secret, so I hope you can lock this up into your hearts. Lets make it a secret between you and I. In reality, there are some people who are blessed with luck. People who are praised as heroes are sided by the heavens. But it’s only with both ability and luck that one is able to leave results. Now this is about our captain, Monkey D. Luffy. Now the name "Luffy" is spelled with an L and not R. The word "Luff" means, "to bring the head of the sailing ship closer or directly into the wind". Doesn't it sound like a name for a pirate captain? I think there is no better name for a man sailing the seas. I've had letters from a number of people who have realised this, but when I read this my smile tends to fade. I mean, if I didn't say anything… IT WOULD TOTALLY LOOK LIKE I KNEW IT FROM THE START right?? (total coincidence). So what I’m trying to say is that Luffy, I believe, was born with incredible luck!
Eiichiro Oda - 2007.04
Did any of you expect One Piece to be a manga of Man v.s. Fate conflict?
when Blackbeard shows himself at the war, Whitebeard says something like "One Piece exists, but it isn't waiting to be found by a man like you" so if we take that line into account it means that One Piece is meant for someone else. It was meant to be found by a man of Rogers' liking. Shanks believed in Luffy, way before he was even a pirate. He noticed something within him. Mihawk has seen Luffy on 2 occasions and yet he went to see shanks to tell him about it AND noticed his incredible potential at the war. The Whitebeard pirates all put their lifes on the line for Luffy when Akainu went after him saying that Akainu also noticed his potential and that is why they will protect him. Would it be so strange, knowing this, that Rayleigh has noticed after meeting once? He was probably the man that was closest to Roger. The hat is just symbolic and has nothing to do with bloodlines or whatever. Roger probably believed in Shanks and gave him the hat same way as Shanks believes in Luffy and maybe it was faith indeed that brought the hat exactly too Luffy but I think not because EVERYWHERE he goes, even if he is just an ant in a battle of giants, he is noticed by everyone. He just has that presence and Shanks used the hat to make sure someone like Luffy surely went to sea to become a pirate to unlock his potential, which he did and now Rayleigh unlocked it even further and every step he gets closer to his ultimate goals he starts looking more like the man he should be to become pirate king.
But that's just my 2 cents.
i am annoyed at lineage. lineage always annoys me in manga. or some special power, such as the Breaker or Veritas where they are the only ones taught some technique that the whole world wants and knows its the most powerful.
but with this war Oda helped to relieve my pain on that. For one reason. The almighty Roger bloodline was killed. Roger's blood didnt' help save Ace. he died. Dragon or garps blood won't save luffy either. he has to wrok for every league he crosses in the grand line. His blood wont get him to raftel
I think Dragon raised the storm intentionally or unintentionally but yes, lightning striking the platform was just Luffy's dumb luck. As said, Monkey D. Boa's point is valid anyway.

Hmpf, well then I hope Oda trolls us all and Luffy dies and Chopper becomes Pirate King.

And in the mangas where this lineage "bullshit" exists, the main characters are almost never spoiled.
here is a quick example to refute you
Michael Jordan has kids who sit around on their ass all day doing nothing
Bill Gates has kids who love sports and play them nonstop and try to become awesome
some nerdy unathletic dad who is poor/middle class has kids who also love sports and try insanely hard to get awesome.
Michael Jordan's kids have the advantage genetics wise, but that don't mean they will be better at sports than bill gates kids or that nerdy guy due to how they acted in LIFE. Now bill gates kid have advantage over poorer family due to being able to say afford own gym and all that instead of relying on going to park or whatever to play and so on.
Or a quick exmple in one piece world. Look no further than Helmeppo. Look at all he has achieved when he tried. Oh but look at how he was when he was riding his dads coat tails. hell for all we know Ace could have turned out like Helmeppo if his dad was around.

Did any of you expect One Piece to be a manga of Man v.s. Fate conflict?
I'm not one of extremes, I didn't want that either.
Although I love "Man VS Fate" stories, I'd just like if this story was a simple "Luffy is a rookie trying to be the best of the best and working the hardest, without needing any luck to be the best".

Just appreciate the great writing and stop calling Luffy destined. He has advantages and good relationships but most of all IMO he's just extremely lucky.

I'm sorry, but this manga has flaws, I know its hard to admit it, but it does.
And IMO, the whole "lucky" and "destiny" thing sucks.
I'm afraid I'l have to live with it, just as you'l have to live with my opinion.

Since when do we have to live with your opinion? It's quite easy to just ignore ignorance.

I'm rather enjoy this discussion but I'm not really understanding how he's destined.
I definitely can see people thinking he's very lucky but Luffy has got his but kicked way to much for me to believe he's destined.

At underlined: Yes, that's what I mean, sorry if it came as if I was saying you'l have to agree with me, or something
At bolded: What knowledge am I lacking when I say that I don't like the "Lucky" and "Destiny" part of this manga? Please, enlighten me

It's especially easy when you quote said ignorance
I'm such an ignorant turd, how dare I prefer having characters working very hard without luck over having characters getting extremely lucky to be the best in the world?
Repent, oh One Piece hater, you that hate a aspect of One Piece shall not be welcomed to the golden park until you regret your tastes.

Without needing any luck? So what if he met an Admiral right the moment he became a pirate?
It's his luck that he met Shanks and it's his potential that make Shanks recognize him and give him his hat. Then later it's his luck that he met Rayleigh and it's his ability that made Rayleigh approve of him.

Moderate amounts of extreme luck are fine, specially in back story.
I start getting annoyed when you throw at me the fact that he has the Will of D., the fact that the destiny is "after him" and the fact that he was able to survive a lot of stuff more because of the friends he makes (due to his easy-going personality) than his incredible resolve.
I'l try to be less ignorant on my tastes, though, how else will I earn the respect of flandrian?
