This is Jeff's best episode
-
Best episode of the season so far.
-
Jeff's half-brother was a riot.
-
Britta's boombox was the best part.
-
What if I told you… the Puppet episode might not actually be within Abed's mind.
! NBC sitcom Community will be airing a puppet episode in April, the network announced at PaleyFest Tuesday night.
The episode will feature the cast working out the aftermath of a group outing gone wrong with hand puppets. In flashbacks, the cast will be portrayed as larger versions of the puppets.
The episode synopsis reads as follows:
“In the episode, the study group takes a wild balloon ride that crash-lands in the woods and they end up spending a little time with a friendly mountain man. As the study group recounts their adventures in the woods, which has left them all feeling a little awkward with one another, Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) encourages them to speak about their experience with the use of puppets.”
According to Rolling Stone, the puppet episode, titled “Intro to Felt Surrogacy” will feature a guest appearance by Seinfeld star Jason Alexander as the “friendly mountain man.”
The series did similar transformations for its season 2 episode “Abed’s Uncontrollable Christmas,” when the cast was transformed into stop-motion animation characters, and the season 3 episode, “Digital Estate Planning,” when the actors were turned into 8-bit video game characters.
According to UPI, the felt and foam puppets for “Intro to Felt Surrogacy” were manufactured by Drew Massey and Scott Johnson, who most recently worked on Muppets Wizard of Oz for the Jim Henson Co. and Warren the Ape for MTV.

Nice to hear on the Muppet thing.
Just got back from seeing Joel McHale do standup. Was much better than anticipated. He did start out by blasting everyone in the audience for not being home watching Community, and he also threw a few daggers at Chevy.

That was an amazing episode of Community. Holy...
-
That episode.
My emotions. MY EMOTIONS. Jeff's bit about the phone had me sad, but when the way Joel delivered the story of his "appendicitis" had me awed by his acting, and just really down by how sad Jeff's life is. Great scene.
Britta's boombox was hilarious. As was Abed's narration. And Willy Jr. I really hope we see more of him.
Best episode of the season, and one that can legitimately hang with some of the best from the series.
Some other favorite moments:
–"Roll" Playing. "Show me on the roll where you hurt!."
--Jeff stopping his dad from giving a big Winger speech.
--Jeff ending his fear of becoming Pierce by calling his dad's BS heart attack.
--Pierce's white face on black face. Now excuse me, I'm going to watch this episode again.
-
That episode was great and really speaks to me personally. It's easily the best of this season so far and stands up there with one of my favorites. I'm just going to leave this little bit from the Winger speech at the end that I mostly word-for-word did back in the day:
! "One time when I was in 7th grade, I told everybody at school that I had appendicitis. I wanted someone to worry about me, but when Beth Brennan asked to see the scar I didn't want to get found out so I took Mom's scissors and I made one. It hurt like hell, but it was worth it because I got 17 cards and I still keep them in a box underneath my bed 22 years later because it proves that some one at some point cared about me." (Jeff Winger)
-
All the tears for Jeff.
-
Abed was friggin annoying in this episode and him saying out the shawshank thing loud was pretty much the killer, but there is too much other awesomeness going around to ruin it for me.
The first new episode that I really really liked, yo yey community is back! :P let's see for how long it holds up for me.
-
Damn, that episode was far and away the best of the season and probably the single most poignant episode for me personally ever. Jeff's confrontation at the end rung so true with me that it almost hurt to keep watching and I had to pause in the middle of it. Fantastic, poignant, perfect.
And the fact that Britta was there making it all awkward had to be the coolest part of the whole thing. This episode just blew me away. It's a shame that the B plot was so bland in comparison, because Jeff and Britta nailed this one.
-
that was jeff meeting his dad done right in an all around strong episode.

I have to kinda of agree… sorta. I really enjoyed Abed's narration during the homage... but during the Thanksgiving portion.. I kinda got pissed off he kept talking. The scene would've been perfect if it was just the familiar music, and the gang enjoying their meal. I'm almost tempted to download the episode and edit it just to see.

Had this exact same thought.
Abed has gone from being one of the best parts of the show to being a substantial drag on it. Not anywhere in Chevy territory, sure, but this was Jeff's episode. For once, he doesn't have to throw eighteen references on top of it.
-
Also, it was really painful to hear the Die Hard bit, especially since like we know Abed dresses up like Die Hard. I guess it would be different if we hadn't already seen a clip of the Christmas episode.
-
Me yesterday: "Oh noes! Whitney went up to a 1.3! That's gonna be rough to top in repeat land…"
Me waking up and checking my sources: "Ugh, let's get ready to c-...! 1.5!!!!!!!!!!!!"
! Yes. We are in a timeline where a 1.5 is the best possible ratings news. -
I know! I waited up all morning. Judging from overall performance I think we have a chance at an adjustment up. 1.5 is great and made Community the most watched comedy on NBC since the last original Parks or Office.
-
Last original Parks episodes were 1.4s. This is NBC's top comedy rating since February 14th though.
-
And what's even better is that the show pulls some of its better ratings during one of its best episodes of the seasons (series?), so hopefully it will attract folk back for the next one.
-
Aye!
One thing I don't see people discussing is the vacuum effect that also hit the second half of season 3's direction (where the run of 12 to 13 episodes was produced before the first one aired). Community's always seemed absorbent and reflexive, so I'm really interested to see how the new guys react to the critical backlash over the season. It's not like they can course correct mid-season like the first three seasons had the advantage of doing. So that's probably the biggest reason why I'd like to see a season 5.
-
Okay, this episode. Hmm. One hand, the Winger speech this time was one of the best moments of the series ever. On the other hand… the rest of the episode was pretty weak. Jeff's dad felt pretty weak compared to what I thought he would be, but I guess that is kinda the point, to show that he's a quite pathetic character. The entire prison thing felt incredibly dumb, and wasn't really funny at all apart from some lines. Britta was great this episode though, her boom box was hilarious.
It's a shame, since I've tried to be a stalwart defender of this season so far.
-
The prison part wasn't completely done. I think it was super relatable, and there some clever about puns of time and serving.
-
Troy's speaking third about the garbage dip was one of my hardest laughs of the season.
-
Yep, Jeff and Britta's story this episode was one (might be the) best part of the season so far. I'm glad that we finally get some closure with Jeff's dad thing and it was done really well too. I didn't feel that the other part of the episode was bad but it wasn't anywhere near as great as Jeff and Britta's part.
-
This episode ticked all the boxes for me. Even Abed's homage nailed it pretty much. Props to Joel McHale, he took some strong writing and hit it out of the park.
Random observations:- The dean finally did a costume that wasn't a dress! Although, has he started borrowing from the Winger wardrobe now?
- Who uses their campus email to talk to their therapist ("Kiss from a rose" episode) and their long estranged father? Is it that hard to create jeffrey.winger@gmail.com?
- I felt this was a strong episode for Pierce. The whole "It's a reference. Abed gets it." followed by Abed shaking his head killed me. Every time. I wish we got to see the whiteface over the blackface.
- I love Britta being so awkward and bumbling, and still doing things right. The boombox (which was predictably shut down by Jeff, remember Roxanne?), the "roll" playing (yes, we got it Britta).
- Who thinks that a hole in their basement wall is a good sign!?

This was probably the first episode since Advanced Gay where I wasn't bothered by Pierce. He was actually quite funny. Still, nothing like his season 1&2 days.
-
Pierce is still funny to me, albeit not as much but when he was getting shocked in Atlernate History of the German Invasion I laughed quite a bit just because he told everyone to grab him. It seemed so much like something Pierce would do and despite the cartoony lightning effect, it was funny.
-
Haven't met someone german speaking english like that, I'm always rather entranged by that "german accent" by what I assume is the american idea of it.
Lots of people told me already that I can't pronounce the r right. I can't say "red". it sounds like "wet" :/ And I always pronounce the r in "iron". And I roll my r's too much. I'm trying rly hard to get better but it usually sounds wrong… well, it'll get better over the years I hope.
-
It was a stronger episode than the rest of the season so far. I wished we just spent more time on the Jeff's dad plotline than the Thanksgiving stuff. I mean we've had that moment in the wing(er)s since the start of the show really and felt it got pushed to the side a bit to give more room for Abed's Shawshank homage.
When we did have the Jeff's dad stuff however, it was great. Definitely one of the most poignant episodes in the series' run.
But Abed's bit at the end nearly ruined the episode for me. Kind of summed up my problem with what the series has become really. It has started to ignore what the character side of the series and instead just focuses on what zany things they'll get up to next. Really bothered me.
End of Season 2 we get Abed complaining to Jeff how they hadn't been close throughout that year and wanted to get to know each other a bit better. Then we hear at the end of this episode that Jeff started talking to Abed more and he just decided to ignore him and think about what they were doing for Christmas. Would have really improved the scene without Abed closing it up like that. As Silver put it, should have just kept that familiar music and the gang enjoying their meal.

By complete accident I found a link to an entire playlist of music in Community.

I got to Linger, and wanted it to say, "Abed hired a Irish singer"

Conventions of Space and Time which original had a 1.1, gained a 55% increase bumping it to 1.7 with the Live+7 DVR Ratings.

And it should be mentioned the Valloween episode jumped to 1.8 with the Live+7 as well. There wasn't any specifications for the first episode since it didn't make top 25 gains. I assume because everyone tuned in live. So far we have:
4.01: 1.9
4.02: 1.2 (+7 1.8)
4.03: 1.1 (+7 1.7)
4.04: 1.2 (+7 not available)
4.05: 1.5 (+7 not available) -
I have the Community numbers for History 101 somewhere. It jumped to a 2.4 or 2.5. I got them in a roundabout way but I did post them in the TVBTN comments at some point.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
2.4 ... My source was a FOX press release I can't seem to find that listed all of the L+7 season averages for every show and Community only had one data point at the time, so yeah.
-
Paleyfest is up on hulu. Be prepared to laugh until it hurts.
They have the whole thing, but for now, a clip.
-
Man, Alison Brie can be really un funny sometimes. (the smoking boy gag)
-
Britta Perry
Basically a Therapist.All my love.
-
Britta Brittas everything. :D
-
That was a sweet episode. Not too many laughs, but I really enjoyed it. Especially the way Abed kept extorting people.
I was so sure Chang was faking, but now I'm really confused.
EDIT: Nevermind! I knew it! It's all part of the City College Dean's Plan!
-
I think the episode was ok, but I think it was the first disappointment for me this season.
-
I thought it was great. Why didn't everyone question the origin of the word "changnesia" though? I mean, come on.
I enjoyed the Britta stuff and the Troy and Annie stuff though.
-
Oh snap. that ending is just killing me. I KNEW it. I wonder if this is going to be part of the season finale. :T
-
I enjoyed the Britta stuff and the Troy and Annie stuff though.
The scene of them at the trout farm killed me. As did Troy's enthusiasm about it all. Donald Glover is just a genius.
-
Week by itself: Get a 1.5
Week when other stuff is actually airing: Get a 1.0
I don't understand this. What is this?
-
Like I said in the other thread, American Idol, Glee, The Office, and Big Bang Theory all dropped.
-
I actually quite liked this episode. Really liked the Troy and Annie stuff, made a change to have them have a little plot line together. Although that may end up being too similar to Annie and Shirley in the April Fools episode.
But it's certainly better than the first four episodes.
-
Finally watched this. Wasn't my favorite episode, but this was the most tolerable/funny Abed had been in a long time.
-
NBC just announces the community season finale. It's on May 9th.
-
I kept thinking
but I can hardly blame them given the weird scheduling.
