My only major problem with Skypiea is that I hated how Oda cockblocked me into Skypiea

My reactions as the Skypiea saga started:
-Wow, what the hell is going on?
-There's an island in the sky? Cool
-We're so gonna to that island in the sky, 'ts gonna be awesome
-This town is hella cool
-Nice, Pirates all over the place
-That black bearded pirate is nice
-Flashbacks, nice, I can't wait for Skypiea
-Wow, fucking awesome, Luffy just punched the shit out of that guy
-Wow, this flamboyant guy is awesome, he's a puppteer
-Oh shit, that guy is massive, why does he have a bible?
-Sengoku? Oh my god, does the guy command the entire Marine organization?
-Oh, hey, its Mihawk
-Hum? Who is this tap-dancing guy? Awesome
-Oh shit, WHITEBEARD, THE STRONGEST MAN IN THE WORLD, HE'S A GIANT, HECK YEAH
-Wait, what? Those are the Blackbeard Pirates? Aren't those Ace is after? AWESOME

Sure, Vivi existed and was a pain in the ass. And MAYBE Little Garden can be considered to be part of the arc. But Drum Island's only connection to Alabastre was Vivi. None of Boroque Works took part in it. Everything was just along the way and in preparation toward the big scene in Alabastre.

If that's the case, Skypeia is part of the Enies Lobby arc. Robin, who is practically the main reason the Enies Lobby arc took place, is present. Not to mention, they would not have even TRIED to have bought a new ship if it weren't for the Skypeia gold.

In other words, the (quote unquote) BEST ARC EVER would not have happened if the (quote unquote) WORST ARC EVER had not happened.

I always loved Blackbeard, although I never thought of him as a big bad villain until Ace VS Blackbeard

Also, the One Piece Wikia division in sagas is fairly well done, I think, and I agree with them:

East Blue Saga (Beginning to Grand Line)
Baroque Works Saga (Beginning of Grand Line until Alabasta)
Skypiea Saga (Mock Town until Skypiea)
Enies Lobby Saga (Foxy Arc until Water 7 [after Enies Lobby])
Whitebeard War Saga (From Thriller bark until now)

I think that its a fair divisions, although I guess you could create a Thriller Bark saga and put it above Whitebeard War Saga

When Skypeia originally ran, it was the longest standalone arc of the series, and it was about a third of the series length. I can see why at the time it may have felt dragging, I was watching the anime when it got to that point, and theres a reason I switched over to the manga.

Not to mention, the flashback that puts the entire arc into context and explains whats going on doesn't happen till near the end, its not until the second read through you have any idea who any of these people are or what they're fighting for or why its important.

Plus, there was nothing to compare it to length wise. So when you have no idea where its going or when its going to end, I can see where it'd feel absurdly long, the first time through. I understand thinking Skypeia was crazy long in 2003.

But there's been much longer arcs since then, and now its about 1/7 of the series. And we've seen the follow up arcs and what contexts and payoffs Skypeia set up. And with each passing chapter it becomes more and more a piece of the series, instead of an overwhelming giant out of place behemoth that followed the Alabasta arc.

I'm incredibly curious to see how long Fishman Island is going to be. Is it going to be the equivilent counterpoint, a two year adventure after so much hype? Or is it going to be a relatively short stop over before the new world? Time will tell on that one, but I expect it'll be the former.

I will agree, I liked Skypeia a million times more the second time around. I saw it in the anime first, read the manga (really liked it a lot more) and now I am rewatching it as the DVD's are released, and again I am having a lot more fun with it.

Little garden is a part of the Baroque-SAGA, cause here the SHs go against Mr.3, who is part of Baroque.
Drum is just an arc for itself without any connection to the Baroque-Saga.(but is sure in between it)

Ok, so I guess skypea was canon, but it didn't affect the overall plot that much when put into consideration with how long it was. I admit that I was wrong when I said it wasn't canon (and I'm sorry I killed Greg).

Yeah i reckon this is correct. Also Drum is in the middle of the Baroque Works Saga so a lot of people kinda skim through it to Alabasta, but it's also far better imo and very underrated, probably my third favourite arc. :happy:

I will never forget the day someone made a 'What if the story went to outer space?' thread and I actively participated in speculation only to be assaulted with 'THAT'S STUPID AS HELL THAT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!' from almost every angle. I said Oda could make it happen if he wanted.

A year later Ener landed on the moon and fought goddamn space pirates.

That's one of the nice things about the series. It can make sense no matter how crazy the idea is. Well…unless that idea has pink hair.

The wierdest part about this Skypeia talk is… I felt negativley about it originally, too. Partly because the anime was insanely padded, and I was getting that piecemeal in bootleg sets (and it was my transition period to the manga... so it took me a VERY long time to get through the arc) and like I said before, in context of the series' length at the time, it WAS a long pit stop without obvious payoff. No new crewmember or bounty raise or the like. And I can understand the insane importance of Enel's cover story being missable if you aren't paying attention, or skimmed the Skypeia flashback, I know it didn't click for me initially. I totally understand having problems with it when it was coming out and there was no further context.

But having re-read all of it recently with the Viz releases, (and I specifically did Skypeia in one sitting) and several more years of material after it, and having talked and thought about it at length. Damn.

SO MUCH IMPORTANT STUFF going on, and you just sort of don't realize it because you're going along with the flow, and week to week some stuff is harder to track and the context of the backstory isnt there the first time. But.

Yeah. Insanely important. And insanely well done too, when not getting it in stretched out form.

It didn't set in until a bit later for me though.

Drum is always going to be my favorite arc. But Skypiea jumped miles with my second reading and context behind it. The flashback that comes at the END of it adds so, so much to it for the second reading.

The Dials were straight up awesome, very original
I feel like the Impact Dial is underused, but then again, Usopp doesn't have many fights
It just feels so awesome, specially in the Anime, the Anime really gives you that awesome impact
