More then them making an app, it's just plain fucking retarded that they had the app for sale and were using it to make money through something other then donations. And $851 dollars in that small of time also. I know it's minor compared to Shuiesha's sales but damn.
Shueisha wants to get rid of free online manga

On MangaStream's front page:
Gotta love how they think that'll stop the firestorm the app caused.
What firestorm? VIZ has been C&Ding iPhone app creators for months, it's nothing new and it's MangaStream's fault for not doing any research on that beforehand. Besides, I think they could have easily just pocketed the cash, what do they have to prove to anyone? They're the ones spending hundreds of hours per week scanlating, only to meet endless criticism for any little thing they do, idiotic or not. I would be surprised if they continue scanlating much longer with the growing number of haters each week… as someone who scanlated the big three before I can relate to that.
It's funny when people think the cloth on the scene was lifted with this app, when last I checked sites like OneManga are in the top 300 in the world traffic-wise, and sites like MangaFox are paying to advertise themselves all over Google Adwords. Yeah I'm sure a company that licenses and distributes manga has never put two and two together. Probably the same people who think that MS' retarded congrats tweet to Kubo caused the Shueisha letter this topic is based on, when the 400th chapter was printed in the same issue as the letter.
Don't put too much stock in MangaStream's influence. VIZ showed that all they care about is when you start putting a price tag next to their manga, so they knocked MS down a few notches. Maybe they'll start being less retarded and more diligent.

The firestorm comes from the fact that Viz can now prove MangaStream has profited from pirating manga, which could very well mean a lawsuit.
Even if they donated it to charity, Viz and Shueisha are entitled to that money. -
I CALL SHENANAGENS!?!?!?!

Putting hundreds of hours of work does not justify making profit from illegal activities, you do realize that…... right?
People who grow marijuana crops put in hundreds of hours of hard labor raising those crops too, ya know. -

People who grow marijuana crops put in hundreds of hours of hard labor raising those crops too, ya know.Hey man, I think we can all appreciate the hard work those farmers put in. Salt of the earth, those people. puff
No, but seriously, they're really skirting the abyss of the illegal here. To try and make money off the scanlations is just plain dumb. If they did it for free or had (covertly) asked for donations that would have been
finenot as stupid. But with the app thing they painted a big bulls-eye on their back reading "prosecute me for criminal copyright infringement". -
Who the fudge approved an app to let people read illegal material???

Even if they donated it to charity, Viz and Shueisha are entitled to that money. But there is a difference in "for their own gain"
Or to rephrase it:

People who grow marijuana crops put in hundreds of hours of hard labor raising those crops too, ya know. There is no more "profit"
Btw from what country is MangaStream anyway…

Tweeting Tite Kubo about the chapter before the chapter is officially out and then making an app for sale on iPhone which is blatantly illegal to make money off of Shueisha's copyright are little things?
I think most of us are getting angry because they do give us the best quality chapters (Other then one or two line translations per chapter) the quickest(Especially with no more raws), which is why we're getting pissed off that they're doing things that are basically jumping up and down waving their arms in the air saying 'Close us down!'
-
Does anyone at Mangastream have a brain?
-
Only in the regards of mopping and typesetting.
-
Their next recruitment page is going to be asking for a lawyer. =x

Given all that, if Mangastreamer isn't stupid, it means they're EXTREMELY arrogant, worse than certain fansubbers I might add!

You don't seem to understand how this works.
If I were to go to your house, steal all of your books and dvds, sell them, and donate the proceeds to starving kids in Africa, I'd be prosecuted. That's pretty much how the law views what MangaStream has done. -
Not to mention, isn't this "donation" announcement retroactive?
or did they have that up before or as soon as the app went online? Not that it matters. -
oh mangastream!
first the tweet and now this.
@blue
their server his hosted in USIf I were them I would have it in EU (anywhere but France, I believe it would be better )

That's pretty much how the law views what MangaStream has done.I try to understand it as much as I can being a law student from EU. So basically depends…what LAW is used WHERE...
Things are not that simple, if they were, MangaStream would be picking up soap barAnd just so you know it would not actually be the same if you would steal my stuff and give it to starving kids in Africa or use them yourself, it would not be the same at all.
And second, stealing my stuff physically or via internet would not be the same as well.
Different dispositions and actions for different areas in different countries. And yeah if a lawsuit would follow it would be quite complicated, knowing you have to take into an acount that
1. the whole thing is done via internet (which is btw the most lawless zone and the least specified)
2. The act (whatever the charge would be...would have most likely been determined as done in Japan)
WHILE
3. We/I have just learned their server and therefor their "home" is in USADon't see and wont even go into the details about which I know jack. But just pointing out this stuff is not so simple

or did they have that up before or as soon as the app went online? Not that it matters. It does not really matter when they have put it up. It matters why they have. So if we skip the BS and say it as blunt as possible. It only matters why they did the act. So they could have put it up to cover their asses but say they did it because they intended to all the time and that would be that.
Try to prove they did not and good luck -
I WOULD LOVE IF THE MANGA COMPANY WOULD release manga online as an subscription with major languages all at once .. English Spanish french would be great hell just English would cover most country in the world..

I was on Gamefaqs and found there's apparently a new site coming called OpenManga and will legally host manga on it. From what I gather on these links, they'll be a subscription service:
http://www.facebook.com/openmanga
http://twitter.com/openmanga
http://blog.openmanga.org
That last link is especially full of info on what they're trying to do. I hope they succeed. -
I'd suscribe so long as they don't try to gouge people on the prices.
-
No thanks. I buy the volumes anyway, and don't see the point in paying twice.
-
Well it's not that big a deal. If you look around long enough there are plenty of sites where you can download manga and anime for free. As soon as one site closes, twenty take its place.
I visit so many sites to get my fix I've forgotten half of them. But I've still got about twenty or thirty I can go to easily enough.
Zero Phoenix is your hookup. :ninja:

Reviving this topic again…
UN's World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) wrote an article about manga piracy. It blamed the loss of sale on raw scans and scanlations.
Unauthorized scans or “raws” are typically generated by individuals who scan books into electronic format, a practice known as jisui, which translates as “to cook for one’s self.” With the uptake of e-book readers and computer tablets, jisui has become a fully-fledged business with the emergence of popular scanlation aggregator websites hosting thousands of manga episodes and making them available free of charge. Those who do scanlation rake in profits through advertising on their own websites and also earn points which can be turned into cash for each download made from an aggregator website.
Scanlation groups, of which there are now well over a thousand, are perpetuating a highly corrosive form of piracy that is threatening the industry, causing global manga sales to plummet and forcing publishers to lay off staff. From 2007 to 2009, for example, U.S. manga sales fell by 30 percent forcing a leading publisher to lay off 40 percent of its workforce.
Every now and then things keep popping up indicating manga publishers/anime studios are trying to stop online piracy. Youtube uploaders were recently sued by crunchyroll and tv tokio. The defendants in this case reside in the United States, Japan, Canada, Denmark, and Hungary.

They're legal now.

And how the fans will rage at the lack of manga…
-
i am not sure how exactly copyright laws work. Crunchyroll has rights in US, TV Tokyo hold in Japan. Can they sue someone where its not licensed yet?
