Come writers and Kishis
Who prophesise with your pen
And keep your eyes wide
The chance won't come again -
And don't speak too soon
For the wheel's still in spin
And there's no tellin' who
That it's namin'. -
It rolls off the tongue like a fine bouquet.
You think that's bad? I have not even yet begun.

Pyromonki hates fine music.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
For the times they ara a-changin'. -
Plenty more where that came from. SU ran for forty episodes.
Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall -
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'. -
What's scarier? That they made 40 episodes or that someone cared enough to archive and put them up on youtube?
It'll soon shake your windows
and rattle your walls
for the times they are a-changin'. -
They're both pretty damn freakish.
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don't criticize
What you can't understand -
Fuck, I barely know spanish lyrics, I can't sing a whole song in english if my life depended on it.

You could just look up the lyrics :ninja:
Your sons and your daughters
Are beyond your command
Your old road is
Rapidly agin'. -
I do hope that doesn't imply you're not singing it at the top of your voice right now…
Please get out of the new one
If you can't lend your hand
For the times they are a-changin'. -
The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast
The slow one now
Will later be fast573XmVOdD2Q

As the present now
will later be past
The order is rapidly fadin'. -
And the first one now
Will later be last For the times they are a-changin'. -
C-C-C-C-Combo Breaker!
did anyone watch this?

I loved how Genki actually used to fight WITH his monsters, it was a nice breath of fresh air from Pokemon and Digimon.
-
I can't see the video, but I'm assuming you're talking monster rancher.
It was fine up until they started using their "friendship power" or whatever they called it.
-
I just got through RE-watching Monster Rancher actually. And I'd made it a point years ago to watch as many of the JAPANESE episodes as I could get ahold of. Raw, with no subtitles! Before the net uploaded anime as a normal thing! I was getting TAPES of Japanese television!
Rewatch was fun, the show had a few really good episodes, and a lot of stupid ones. Par for the course. Finally saw the damn Death of Greywolf episode that they cut from syndication after the first airing. Upon seeing it, it was pretty obvious why.
They also edited down Durahan's "death" episode from 2 episodes to 1, but considering all the horrific violence going on in that set in the japanese version of the show, its not surprising.
Really I would have been perfectly fine with the show if it had been just the Adventures of Tiger of the Wind. He was easily the best part of the cast. I guess Holly was okay too. Just Tiger and Holly, that woulda been fine.
(Also, his japanese name was Raiga, which is of course some sort of thunder pun. They translated it for the games, and then the show, as Tiger, which made no sense since he's… a wolf. I'm guessing they wanted to avoid having a similar name to pokemons Raichu or something.)
-
They can't sell crappy toys to kids without the lovechild of Kirby & Pikachu though.
-
Monster Rancher, Digimon, and Pokemon (kind of) make me want to sing a song:
I am strolling down memory lane
With out a single thing to remember
I am strolling down memory lane
With out even a dieing ember
Some folks remember their mothers
And others their girlfriends behind
But I am strolling down memory lane
Without a ding-dong thing on mind.

The inevitable conclusion to this line of thought.
I don't like the horns, so I'm not gonna avatar it yet, but maybe later with some tweaking…

NO!!! It's too soon to change the Ace one. You gotta keep it until Ace has his funeral/ Luffy gets over him whichever comes first.
And I'm disconcerted over the Monster Rancher thing. I saw the two seasons dubbed when I was like 12 and I thought it was pretty good at the time. There was some lame plot twists (like finding Durahan with random teleportation wtf) but all in all, highly enjoyable and I found season two to be better than season one as well which is a rarity in shows (except the kinda lame ending, friends with Durahan as we look at the setting sun!!!")
So people think it was bad:/? And here I was going to rewatch the whole two seasons subbed after I finish Digimon:/
-
Only bad when they used friendship power.
-
Eh, that part never bothered me. I just took it as one of their abilities like any other attack. I don't really see anything wrong with the concept of adding your own power to someone else.
But maybe the problem was with the execution? I don't really remember it much, it was like eight years ago since I last saw it.

Y'know I watched that dub too when I was 8 or 9 and I only remember some kid and Rollerblades and that eye creature thing. Can't believe you remember so much.

It struck me as a end of series power (and indeed they did use it at the end of both seasons), but from memory they spammed the hell out of it.
When they don't use it, the series is good.
-

Not THAT much but I think I have a good memory for cartoons. If only I could apply it to my university work-_-

Yeah, come to think of it they did spam it a lot like in that Mochi fight against his superior counterpart in season two. What happened to fair play? I can see how it bugs you when you look at it like that.
-

They used it a lot near the end and against the big bosses, but they had it pretty much as a standard ability the last season. It wouldn't have been so bad… if the aura weren't PINK. I'm also pretty sure the dub simplified the explanation of what it was down to "friendship power".
Either way, it was still... pink.
@Thousand:

I said I wasn't happy with how it came out and I wasn't going to use it…
And I'm disconcerted over the Monster Rancher thing. I saw the two seasons dubbed when I was like 12 and I thought it was pretty good at the time.
It was at its best when it did serious stuff like the episode with Undine, the Greywolf plotline, Holly finding out what happened to her father, or when they spent the whole day just hanging out and not fighting a villain of the day, eps like that. And then there were other episodes that… weren't so good. But it tried a bit harder than its other monster show brethren of the time. DIdn't always succeed, but...
There was some lame plot twists (like finding Durahan with random teleportation wtf)
Suezo had been practicing trying to master his teleport all season. It was payoff when it finally started working and getting them to where they needed to be. Plus the whole connected to the Phoenix thing.
but all in all, highly enjoyable and I found season two to be better than season one as well which is a rarity in shows (except the kinda lame ending, friends with Durahan as we look at the setting sun!!!")
In the Japanese version, Genki goes back to the real world, AGAIN, after the adventure is over. But this was overlaid with scrolling japanese credits and you know, gives it a somber ending again, so that got trimmed off.
So people think it was bad:/? And here I was going to rewatch the whole two seasons subbed after I finish Digimon:/
I enjoyed it. Wasn't as good as I remembered, because I was only remembering the best episodes and blocking out the mediocre ones, but it holds up okay. The dub edited it quite a bit too, like explosion effects whenever there was a physical hit to any anyone, and Durahan's 2 episode "death" being trimmed down to one. (His dead crew was WAY downplayed)
Also, the japanese opening kicks the everloving crap out of the english one. All 3 of them. (Yeah, it was 3 seasons. But 2 distinct arcs.) where they actually do a song instead of reiterating the series title over and over. But of course, that goes for Digimon too.

Indeed. Most & whatever white Suezo was called were awesome.

Was it phoenix related? Can't remember, but if so it should have been red.

Multi-lingual I ain't.

It was… basically friendship. But it was also teamwork and encouragement and stuff. Again, not so bad when they're not calling it "friendship attack."
Still pink. Really. Would a BLUE aura have killed them?
Oh, that's what he was doing.
I thought he was trying to take a dump.
That too.
Running gag. Toss Suezo into the sky so he can look around the entire area, and then fail to catch him on the way back down. Ha.

It was actually colourful language for ki, though.
What with the main character being called Gen_ki_ and all.

If you can somehow upload those Japanese tapes you have, I know several people who would be very interested in subbing MR. In fact many years ago a guy tried to do just that with his VHS tapes but was killed off my YouTube.
-
Whuh? I thought Monster Rancher had all the episodes subtitled already. Are you saying they're not and don't exist anywhere?
-
@Thousand:

Not to my knowledge. I couldn't get any non-dub hits on TT for Monster Rancher or Monster Farm either.
Traditionally, RAWs for most of those old Japanese anime that were dubbed and aired on Fox Kids/ABC Family back in the day were impossible to obtain. Since VHS and DVDs are so expensive in Japan, otaku only buy what they're die-hard about, not just any old series. So, if you wanted to see shows like Flint: Time Detective uncut and in Japanese, you'd be out of luck.
MR was good enough that some people bought VHS, but they're still a minority and RAWs are few and far between. Only the dub is available online, and while respectable it's not the whole story.
In 2005, a guy started a sub project for VHS rips on YT, but like a moron I didn't favourite his account and he banned from the site a year later. A real tragedy.

Jesus, the second one was awful. Just a bunch of random clip shows from the series and the first opening and with a bad song. The third one was better with a good song and better direction but it was still pretty much another clip-show from the series and first opening. What the hell happened? Didn't these guys have enough budget to spring for some new animated sequences?

I've got to say robby, the second one couldn't kick the everloving crap out of anything.

I don't even have a working vcr, let alone a way to convert tape to anything digital. I intend to, someday, invest the cash into the hardware to do so, just because I do have a lot of tapes that can't be replaced, including a ton of japanese television from about 10 years ago, thanks to a penpal I had at the time. (Love Hina//Pokemon Johto/Detective Conan/ Monster Rancher era stuff basically.) Though obviously most of that stuff has been picked up and released here by now, edited or not.
And even if I could, its nowhere near the entire series. Its a lot of it, but not at all complete. Maybe 30 episodes out of the 78?
@Thousand:
Whuh? I thought Monster Rancher had all the episodes subtitled already. Are you saying they're not and don't exist anywhere?
Internet distribution didn't exist 10 years ago, and while dvds had started to catch on, they weren't really the dominant market format until 2003 or so. Internet fansubs didn't really start catching on until after that, after the Naruto anime started. (Or at least, I didn't catch on to them until that point.)
So before that point, only the absolute most popular stuff got fansubbed. (Dragonball, Sailor Moon, cult shows, things that had aired in America) And that had to be copied from tapes and mailed out the slow way. I originally got Berserk, several Lupin movies, and Slayers TRY fansubbed on tape, if thats any indicator.
Not to my knowledge. I couldn't get any non-dub hits on TT for Monster Rancher or Monster Farm either.

The dub has like, 95% of the story. The biggest edits in the whole series that I noticed were some action related stuff (like Genki headbutting Pixie in the chest… replaced with catoon explosion effects), the Durahan 2 parter condensed into 1 episode, and the season end credits being cut. Pretty light editing all in all, but yes, not quite all there.
I've got to say robby, the second one couldn't kick the everloving crap out of anything.
I had completley blocked the second opening out of my memory. Didn't even remember it existed until I looked to post the first one. Which is also the theme they reprise throughout the series.
That second one… not so good. Obviously even the Japanese knew it, they didn't play it often enough for it to be memorable.
-

Take out an insurance policy…those black tapes you're sitting on are worth more than gold to certain people!
