I know who you're talking about, and honestly, freaking out over honorifics must be quite exhausting these days…lots of professional translations are doing it.
FUNimation Simulcast Discussion

it's funny how when fansubs do honorifics some people go insane but when funimation does it it's okay.

Just a heads up to Mato. Apparently around 8:47 the video has an odd error. Infact, I think there may have been something cut out as a result of this error. Then, about ten minutes or so into the episode, the subtitles start to slowly desync. Near the end of the episode, they're actually about a second out of sync, maybe a little more or less.
Not sure if you if you can forward this to the proper person. Made a mention on FUNimation's forums, but felt like I could mention it here.
-
So are they going to be offering DDL or something other than streams?

And I've been worried, wont this effect DVD sales? If people can get this for free so easily and legal… I don't think it'd be wise for FUNi to put up the entire series. Fans still need to know that buying the DVDs will be one of their only choices of seeing the FUNi dub, that or they're gonna have to wait a long time.
They've got to be careful with how much they're jumping around with this series. They first started airing the dub from Jaya on toonami. They release movie 8. Then they started the series over on the DVDs. Now they're showing episodes starting in the 400s. If I was new to the show, i'd be a little confused with what's going on. And i'd either give up on such a long show or be intrigued enough to buy the DVDs so I can watch from the beginning. Or download fansubs
Putting episodes online is good. If anything, it will boost awareness for the show. It seems to work just fine for SouthPark (you can find the entire series on their website). But then again, that's SouthPark… One Piece is lesser known. So really, any sort of exposure will help funimation.
Still would feel a LOT better about this if the stream was faster. I literally had the thing loading for a half-hour an it was about 40% finished...
NOT COOL
SouthParkStudios.com almost never lags. Even on the days when a new episode is put up. Yeah, i'm sure they're probably better funded. But seriously if Funi is going to do this... they should do it right.
So are they going to be offering DDL or something other than streams?
this would fix my aforementioned gripe. I really hope they would do something like that.

This is gonna be so exciting to watch professional subs week after week!!
…the subtitles start to slowly desync. Near the end of the episode, they're actually about a second out of sync, maybe a little more or less.
Sounds exciting alright. Gotta feel sorry for the good translation that got raped there.
-
I must agree that the end was horrible. That's professional subbing? I must say theyare not on the same level as some fansubs. Keep up the good work guys…
And god this nakama debate it's as if the whole world will collapse if someone doesn't translate it. -
I noticed something about the subs of episodes 1 and 2 on the site. They left in the original logo and the japanese episode title text. Also for episode 391, the japanese karaoke text is missing, but the credits are still there.
-
Mato, can you tell us which translated ready-for-sub scripts are 'in the can'? I'd think 1-195 were, but alas…
-
Btw, Mato. Could you possibly inform the people who handle the website that they have the title wrong. Currently the title is:
One Piece: The Official One Piece Movie Website
Erm… no, no it isn't.
I don't have any connection with that side of the company, so if you can find any contact info on the site, you should contact them. Or contact the brand manager if possible, I don't know who that is, but if Lance is still around then it's probably him.
Hey, Mato. Question from a friend. Are you guys going to go the Naruto route and put subbed episodes 1-390 up as well as the new ones? Are subs even ready for the whole series yet?
I get that it would be a huge undertaking, but just starting at 391 pretty much cuts off the accessibility of anybody not already watching fansubs. I know Funi loves us, but do they really love us THAT much?
There definitely aren't subs up to 390 yet. I'm guessing they're going to slowly put up the old episodes. As for people being confused by the big jump, I'm pretty sure Toei chose to start at 391 specifically because it's easier to get into the current arc starting from there. 10 eps in a row is probably more than enough to get most people comfortable with the new characters and situations, otherwise they probably would've started right at 403 or whatever instead of going back and including the last few months of episodes.
@Yuugi's:

I think everything to the end of G8, but a bunch of the Jaya stuff we first worked on still needs a cleaning because that's back when we were forced to use weird stuff like Zolo, Mary Joa, mantora, etc.

Yeah, I'm getting the feeling that they posted this one so sooner than I thought because it's a kind of a test run. Besides the translating and all the other stuff, we translators have to do the timing too. Because of how things are, I think all my time codes were skewed a little bit, so before the ep was posted, someone did another time code skew to try to move everything back into place. The problem with this is generally doing that will fix early time codes but then the timing will slowly degrade as time goes on.
That, or the fact that the source was in 60 fps and the target was less caused a bunch of the recalculated time code changes to get thrown off over time. I can't see the subtitles in action when translating, so it's like flying blind. There's usually someone later on who'll fix the timing up though.
In any case, I'll ask around and see what can be done. 392 might have a similar problem since it's already done. 393 is done too but it was 30fps when I did it originally.
EDIT: Oh yeah, I forgot, a new thing that FUNi's been doing recently is also including the romaji for songs. Because I had translated this version of We Are before I heard about this new policy, I hadn't included the romaji. I sent in the romaji for it earlier this week though, but I guess it didn't make it into the final version. The new song starts soon though, and I HAVE included the Japanese for that. So those who like to sing along to stuff will be able to, unless for some reason someone higher up doesn't want it there.

Mato!!
Can you answer a question for me please?
In an upcoming episode, There's a part where Reyleigh knocks some guys out just by looking at them, and this other prisoner mentions his "Ambition" (Haki)
Can you say anything about how you handled that?
PLEASE tell me you translated it somehow… -
I haven't gotten there yet. Is Ambition the preferred term for haki? I included it in a preliminary list but it should be possible to change it given enough advance time.
-
We had a huge discussion if it should be translated cause it may be a technique, a power or something else. Ambition seems to be not enough as it leads to the question: will a mother in eastblue be able to knock out fodder marines since she has the ambition to protect her children. Willpower seems to fit. So far rayleigh didn't shout "haki blast" or the amazons didn't shout "haki arrows" etc…
-
Yes, ambition is the preferred term. The worry was that it would go untranslated. :)
-
Mato - Thine Truthsayer Hath returned, thanks to you, we knew
the Phrase 'Climate Baton' almost a year or 2 before it was used in Viz !Also - Mato, I Hate the Phrase Ambition, it doesn't properly describe what Luffy's using, he's not using his 'Ambition, he's using his 'Willpower'
Ambition makes it sound like he's going up for a Desk Job.
'Willpower' is a good term !I sure as hell want it translated, but not as Ambition !
"Oh, Shanks you used your Ambition to save me!"
"Oh Luffy, you'e uanble to string together a coherant Sentance!"Using Ambition as a noun like that, in
that context just sounds awkward & out of place. -
I still think ambition is best. Or perhaps just will? Willpower just sounds wrong to me.
-
Willbition it is!
j/k, but now I must go, much work to do today. I just noticed that some characters in this ep haven't been recorded yet, gonna be fun trying to time that stuff
-
Wooho Willpower or Will it is !
Kuminator has coined a new fan term ! XDNaw, but either
Willpower,
Presence
Aura
Intimidation (Prefer this one least as there's too many syllables!) -
Well will and ambition fit better then willpower for ____ of a king, in any event.
-
I don't care what you translate it as, so long as the point gets across that:
1: Ambition is involved in it (It becomes REALLY important later) and
2: It's TRANSLATED!!as for Why on Number 1, Spoilering it for later manga stuff
! The literal word "Haki" MEANS "Ambition", and we later find out that there are specific types of "Ambition". Luffy has a "Warring King's Ambition".
What is Luffy's Ambition?
That's right, to be "Pirate King"If you translate it and it somehow doesn't mean "Ambition" in some way, that scene makes no sense. If you leave it untranslated the scene… makes even less sense.
Perhaps capitalize it, as in ALWAYS make it "Ambition", to show importance while still getting the point across. -
But the phrase will not always be ____ Of a King,
It will always be one wordA Phrase shouldn't be translated LITERALLY
if the phase it's translated as is bad,I mean, Ambition as a noun like that,
just sounds out of place, whether it's supposed to or not !!You also can't judge to translate a word on whether it will
Go well with another Phrase, like ____ Of A KingRight now we're talking about Willpower, not Willpower of a King

Well, 391 is the beginning of the latest 13 episode block (13x30=390), so I imagine that's why it's starting where it is.
I'm not sure how accessible it really is as a starting point though considering there's two new crew members that have never been seen stateside before. I have a friend who's deathly allergic to spoilers and had to even warn him against watching the We Are Remix opening cause he's been getting the DVDs and reading the manga so he doesn't know about anything past Arabasta.

As you can see above, there is no universally preferred term. Some would leave it untranslated. Some would translate it literally into Ambition. Some would take some liberties and use the more fitting Willpower.
In my opinion, there is no clear best answer. Whatever you decide to translate it to, I would recommend making sure it's capitalized but beyond that…
This is even more of a no-win scenario than Nakama as far as translating goes.
If I had to pick, I would proably go with "Will". It's not a literal translation, but the literal translation doesn't make sense anyway. At least with Will there is a precident of useage with the Will of D.

Alright everyone, time to end this nonsense.
All posts regarding the translation of the word "Haki" are getting moved. All flaming and discussion about grammar stops now. Stay on topic, or thread gets locked.
-
lol..im still very happy about this.
so does this mean the subs start next week?EDIT: i might be not up to date but… when did the new mods get picked?

Well, we should be getting 11 episodes in the next 15 days, otherwise there would be no point in funi streaming 403 on the 30th. Or so I hope, anyway.
-
anyone know when they put the 391 up yesterday? I'm wondering if/when we'll get 392 today, thus hopefully shedding more light on a release schedule
ps. Hey brennen, what say you go use that special power of yours in the FUNi DVD discussion thread as well. It's a "Nakama" Shitstorm right now, not exactly something i intend to discuss when clicking on "FUNimation DVD Discussion"
-
It was up as of 22 hours ago at least. But they may well not be one a day, as there will be 11 episodes to fit over 15 days.

thanks, and that's exactly why I'm curious about a schedule, which i assume they have, being a professional company

Both this and the news of Viz speeding up the manga has made 2009 for me.

No, Sure the good stuff never is, Y'know what ? I'll just stick to my Torrents
This thread isn't fun anymore. The Fun has been sucked, once again.
Bye & Denken Sie daran, Ihre Grammatik!(Reference to those of you who were her before Brennen's Deleting)
