Your entire argument is retarded. Tell you what, Lets go to the chapter threads and see how many people were talking about Blackbeard and Ace [characters] fight [action] and how that event can affect the story [intrigue]. Then go see who was talking about how the rocks on banana island were shaped like banana's [setting] lol.
Take your ridiculous argument to an art class
Hmm this is funny, are you, a person who was previously rolling his eyes and bitching about the people of this forum and their ways of thinking, to quote "typical arlong park", trying to make an argument about how we should go and check out what Arlong Park thinks about this issue?
Goddamn you suck Phenom.
Stop pretending you give a damn about story quality when all you are is a puddle shallow fight junky who has never given a damn about anything but.
And don't bring up classes, I've taken both art and writing classes. What have you taken lol.

Plus you get that awesome bonus rank of "Failed Mutineer" now. thats like a badass badge of honor won on a battle field or something.
Also, you've been completley right this entire time in this thread, I don't know how you have the patience to keep responding. I give up on people/block them after failing to make them see sense after 2 or 3 tries. Just makes my life easier… but your stuff makes sense AND amuses me, which I like.

I just did some rechecking, those rocks on banana island were in the shape of banana's, not knowing and just finding out now didn't affect the story in no such neg way. Who would have thunk it.

I liked DB and DBZ until second half of it start. DBZ should ended Frieza vs SSJ Goku battle. And Goku staying DEAD. After that Trunks shit and android carbage… damn.

I don't really see how ending at Frieza would've made any sense as opposed to the Cell Saga where Toriyama finally followed through on the point that Gohan was going to succeed Goku. Which made the Cell arc a more legitimate ending spot than the Frieza arc.

Sorry everyone but since this is not a popularity contest the clear winner is berserk. I have never read a more original or thought provoking manga in my entire life. The reason it didn't win is probably because most people voting on this are on the young side and are typical anime fans. Sorry if I offended anyone but I just got back from a con and holy hell are there a lot of fangirls/fanboys. Anyway I just don't think anything can beat Berserk.
The art is by far the most detailed in all of manga.
The drama and themes are INCREDIBLY complex and in depth. It chills me to the bone sometimes.
And, it's original. I love One Piece a lot. It's my second favorite manga, but it's a shounen. Meaning it follows a certain pattern:
Main character has a big goal
Main character fights and gets stronger
Main character finds friends that join him
Main character fights and gets stronger
Main character achieves goal OR Main character finds new goal. One Piece, Dragonball, Naruto, Bleach, etc. there all realivley the same. Berserk does follow this pattern slightly during the second half of the series but not to that extent.
Anyway in terms of artwork, story, originality and complex emotional drama, I personally believe Berserk wins hands down.
-

Are You retarded? ANYTHING AFTER FRIEZA IS UTTER BULLSHIT. The main point of the Legendary Super Saiyan is that there is one. There is one Super Saiyan. But, people loved DB and Toriyama loved money (and BTW he's 100% insane, he sees characters for series or games he made and says " Oh my god who made that. I swear I made a character just like that." and friends have to remind him that he made it. That's awesome.) so Toriyama made up more story. Also how did Gohan surpass Goku? If you haven't read the japanese manga, Goku could have killed Frieza, Cell and Buu all by himself BUT he's a goofball and wants to give his friends a chance to fight too. At no point in the series is anyone stronger than Goku.
p.s. Not angry at you, dissapointed at all who think after Frieza makes sense.
-
so Toriyama made up more story. Also how did Gohan surpass Goku? If you haven't read the japanese manga, Goku could have killed Frieza,
Goku couldn't have defeated Frieza without SS that was pretty much made clear after Frieza took a Genki Dama and didn't suffer any significant side effects other than losing his tail and getting extremely pissed off.
Cell and Buu
Granted he could could've possibly have defeated Cell himself but definitely not Buu much less Kid Buu.
himself BUT he's a goofball and wants to give his friends a chance to fight too. At no point in the series is anyone stronger than Goku.
So none of these guys were stronger than Goku?
SSJ 2 Gohan,Frieza,Oozaru Vegeta,Super Buu, Super Cell,

Brolly,Coola,Metal Coola,Hildegarn,Janemba,Super 17 -
Majin Buu would have been destroyed by Goku in an instant. SSJ3 Goku would have punched his face into the ground. But that would be a poor story so Majin Buu bacame Super Buu. Gotenks then fought Super Buu, kicked his ass, got covered in gum and was eaten, and Buu bacame stronger. Then Gohan fought Buu, kicked his ass, got eaten and buu became stronger. Then Vegeto or Gogeta, I don't remember, fought Buu, kicked his ass and got eaten. You see that pattern. Buu is weak as hell and the damn saiyans can't see behind them I guess. Anyone of those characters would have destroyed Buu, they were far stronger but lacked the common sense to look behind them. I don't know what Kid Buu was supposed to be. Buu without Majin Buu inside of himself? But he might have been able to beat Goku on his own. I don't support this because Kid Buu (actually pretty much all buu's) are retarded and don't make sense.
-
Vegetto is the lone exception to Buu's absorbing trick since Goku & Vegetta wanted to get inside Buu to save Piccolo,Trunks,Gohan,&Goten.
I don't know what Kid Buu was supposed to be.
Buu without Majin Buu inside of himself?
Without Fat Buu inside of him Buu reverted back to his original form. Which combined without Babadi or Bibidi's influence was an uncontrollable instrument of chaos and destruction.

The reason it didn't win is probably because most people voting on this are on the young side and are typical anime fans.
Most people here are both those things, and both those things tend to read Berserk.
The art is by far the most detailed in all of manga.
Akira is more detailed.
The drama and themes are INCREDIBLY complex and in depth. It chills me to the bone sometimes.
No other manga has ever had these things.
And, it's original.
Not by all that much.
Anyway in terms of artwork, story, originality and complex emotional drama, I personally believe Berserk wins hands down.

There are manga more or as detailed and Bersek.
And yeah, the whole idea seems to be "The legend of Zelda" mixed with a horror movie and maybe some Fist of the North Star thrown in for good measure–especially in the opening acts and filler stories. -

You begin by insulting fanboys and fangirls and then shut out all other options that another series may be better than Berserk. I like you, kid.
If I want something deep or thought-provoking, I go to Sarte, Dostoyevsky, Jean-Pierre Melville, or hell, even Wes Anderson. If I was looking for that entertains to the highest potential, I go to One Piece and Baccano!. Something that's both "deep" AND entertaining better be doing a pretty damn good job of both, because I only need one in a series and I won't waste my time with the mediocre in either category. From what I've read of Bezerk, it's not quite what I want and I can't say I enjoy the art style. However, it took me a long time to get used to the art style of One Piece and even longer to begin appreciating it, so perhaps I'm unfounded in my unwillingness to go further with it as a series, but honestly, if all I ever hear about it from anyone is that it's "deep" as though it's a fact I'm supposed to accept without question, then I won't bother. The reason I don't accept your judgment on whether something is deep is because "most people voting on this are on the young side and are typical anime fans" and fanboy over a single type of series, determining depth from some indeterminate measuring stick.
Also, I hate to sound like a fanboy myself, but One Piece is different from those other series you mentioned. It has a strong sense of identity and refuses to give into the forms of fanservice that those other shonens rely on (not sexual ones, but you can't have everything). By no means is One Piece perfect and the other big shonen series are better than One Piece in some ways but OP kept it's original spirit without fail and has lasted longer doing so. Oda took more risks and didn't spend all his effort trying to please the mindless fans (once he got into it). Well, Gear Second, sure, but I could argue why that's such a brilliant power-up compared to any other series' super power-up. Besides, once it gets going, it's massively more entertaining. It's got the same quality Gintama has; during an episode of Gintama, the three core characters (and eventually, others) were gathered around a hot pot for almost an entire episode, and it was merely about them eating the food before them. Yet it was a joy to watch, because it was done so well. One Piece has this same quality. None of the other series are quite there.
EDIT: I do consider DBZ a separate series from Dragonball because the vibe I get from watching it is so different.
-
Personally I think berserk is a good read but if you want plot and story Vagabond FTW.
-
Well, my favorite manga of all time is Slam Dunk. It has entertaining characters, great artwork, and is remarkably true to the sport (except for the fact that it has Japanese teenagers dunking and generally being good at basketball, which just doesn't happen). But really the most stunning part is the ending. It ends on an incredibly abrupt and unexpected note for a shounen series, and essentially Sakuragi realizes that he is no longer playing basketball to impress anyone, but rather he's fallen in love with the game.
But seriously, when people use words like "deep," "complex," or "mature" to describe something like manga while disparaging others for not being deep, complex, or mature, it's usually more elitism than actual objectivity, kind of like someone that hates the mainstream and can't stand it when something that he/she enjoys becomes too popular. I've read Berserk, and I'm disappointed that it seems like it's not going to be finished, but I wouldn't call it the best of all time. Not when I think that other series like Monster and Shin Angyo Onshi have more "depth" and entertainment value.
-

I love Berserk. I own the anime twice over, both artbooks, and all 33 Japanese manga volumes and even have a Black Knight figure. But its hardly the best series.
It was brilliant during the Golden Age arc for character development and plot twists, but for the 12 years and 20 volumes since then its pretty much been a monster of the month storyline where Guts goes around and fights another big monster and gets another upgrade to his arsenal. Conan the Barbarian did monster of the month for decades in comics and in the novels before that, and he always saved the girls while he was at it.
For all its great character work, depth and detail, at THIS point Berserk is little more than an R-rated Inuyasha, complete with lack of plot progression and character development and no end in sight.
The art is by far the most detailed in all of manga.
Yes, but it also takes Muira 4-6 months to draw a single chapter nowadays. (And he's apparently on indefinatle hiatus to play Idolmaster now.) After 20 something years he's still only on volume 33. (Whereas One Piece after only 10 years is past volume 50.) The art IS great, no denying it, but Claymore has comprable art and tone and still comes out monthly. Gon the Dinosaur puts anything else to shame. Akira was incredibly detailed and actually finished. Nausicaa Valley of the Wind had crazy world creation. Suikoden 3 had crisp clean art and complex character designs. One Piece has zany comical interpretations and amazing backgrounds which while not realistic art, are undoubtably well drawn. (Especially the backgrounds during the Water 7 era.) Lone Wolf and Cub was unploshshed and raw but was incredible detailed and historically accurate. Good art alone doesn't make something the best.
The drama and themes are INCREDIBLY complex and in depth. It chills me to the bone sometimes.
Again, Golden Age arc had great character depth, development and exploration of humanity and dreams and love and was fantastic. I'll give you that. Its been little more than a revenge tale since then. Revenge tales are classic and satisfying, but it hardly complex or new.
And, it's original.
Seriously. Look up Conan the Barbarian. Or Lone Wolf and Cub. I already mentioned them, but they're both in the exact same vein, and predate the series by quite a few years. Or Beowulf the epic poem if you really want to go to the source. Claymore is a contemporary thats actually coming out and is pretty awesome. You probably wouldn't like Kenshin, its goofy, but its also got that "dark swordman wanders the couyntryside with a group of friends fighting people" thing going.
One Piece, Dragonball, Naruto, Bleach, etc. there all realivley the same. Berserk does follow this pattern slightly during the second half of the series but not to that extent.
Moth monster. Crocadile monster. Crystal dragon monster. Big one horned monster. Guts hits the thing with his sword, takes inhuman damage, uses his demon armor to become stronger against cries of "How can it be! This is impossible! You're just a human! AAARRGGHHH!" then Guts proceeds to try and kill his friends because he's gone berserker. The little witch girl saves his soul and Puck heals him. From the sidelines, retarded Caska watches. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Anyway in terms of artwork, story, originality and complex emotional drama, I personally believe Berserk wins hands down.
Again, I'll give you that for volumes 4-13. But it doesn't matter how amazing those 10 volumes were if the 12 years that have followed since have been slow and meh. Incredibly well drawn meh, with some epic moments in there, but… Its not the deep human drama it was, its a monster hunt now.
-
EDIT: I do consider DBZ a separate series from Dragonball because the vibe I get from watching it is so different.
This is a manga thread. There is no DBZ manga. It was Dargonball from Volume 1 to 42. From Pilaf to Boo.
And if you've actually watched them you'd know that the vibe is incredibly alike near the end of DB and start of DBZ.
Why there's this well accepted lie that DB is panty jokes and kung fu from start to finish while DBZ is BOOM BOOM TRANSFORM INTO MUSCLESPIKEHAIR 5 from start to finish is beyond me.
-
@Deltron:
Why there's this well accepted lie that DB is panty jokes and kung fu from start to finish while DBZ is BOOM BOOM TRANSFORM INTO MUSCLESPIKEHAIR 5 from start to finish is beyond me.
I think its due to how long it took all of original Dragonball to come out here, for a long, long time the only Dragonball stateside was the first 13 or so episodes of the anime, before Krillin even appeared, and the earliest manga volumes and thats what was up against Dragonball Z, which was of course all the fighthappy Saiyajin stuff. Most people don't even realize Goku was grown up by volume 14 of Dragonball (When "Z" started at 17) and think of Dragonball entirely as wacky kid goku, nevermind the fact volumes 10-16 were two tournaments and a couple Piccollo fights exactly in the same vein as the later stuff. (And that Tao Pai Pai before that was totally in the vein of the later villains.)
Also, Lunch vanished off the face of the earth after volume 16. Clearly she is where all the comedy and wacky antics lay.
