They want first dibs.
New official Viz media topic V2.

They want first dibs.
-
It has nothing to do with Viz showing links on their website, but the fact hat Viz is the US Shueisha. Tho technically, Shueisha owns Viz.
-
Bah, it's still a slap in the face to those of us who want more up-to-date material manga-wise.
-
I just got my Jump issue. Did any one else notice that they started Hatchi's cover story on the 4th part, and how it makes no sense now?
-
Yeah, I noticed how they screwed that up.
-
They prefer to keeps those for the graphic novels.
-
Yeah, they usually omit a lot of the cover pages for the magazine. The GNs are fine.
-
"Mommy, mommy, who are those blue-haired freak and the skeleton? And why is Miss All Sunday with Luffy?"
Unfortunately Viz really doesn't care…but then again I remember the days when they released the Ranma 1/2 SNES video game with Pantyhose Taro back when they were still on season 1...so it's not like they ever did.

Eleven volumes in three months. Eleven volumes in three months. Here's to hoping that eventually Viz gets absolutely sick of all the Narutards asking why the volumes aren't coming out faster once they catch up to Japan, and punches them all in the face. And then gets to work on One Piece.
I don't buy or read the Viz manga, but it's what got me into the series and I have a friend who likes One Piece but refuses to watch fansubs or read scanlations. At this rate, I may just have to resort to buying the Japanese tankos and white-outing the speech bubbles to put in translations to get anyone I know to read the damn series.
-
I don't know why everyone is surprised by the 11 volumes in 3 months. Wasn't it something like 9 in 3 months last year?
I think I'm going to have to learn to read Japanese finally.

The surprising thing is not just that Viz is doing it again but that they are eating up what's left just to keep up to date with Japan.

Here's the top 20 Manga properties for the 3rd Quarter.
http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/13691.htmlOf course Viz takes a total of 12 spots on the list. Seems anything with "Vampire" in the title sales a lot.
I'm happy that D. Gray-Man is in the top 20. The series seems like it's overshadowed by more popular series.

Sadly, One Piece will continue to suffer for it.

What? Diggy Diggy? Tweet Tweet? NOT COOL. What's wrong with Mole Mole and Bird Bird?
[Greg]PEOPLE HAD MEETINGS[/Greg]
Heh, geez… No, nothings wrong with them I just didn't care about it. But since Chopper's fruit name was translated as the Human-Human fruit I guess I have a right to complain now...

Meh, Naruto's the big thing now, and the anime is near the end of the fillers… Of course they'd boost sales with releasing the manga to catch up. But volume 44 just came out in japan, the US will get that in april, they will have to slow down or else there will be big problems...
The problem I have is if they can do that for the biggest cliche manga of all time, why can't they do that for One Piece? All One Piece has is us and other various One Piece groups on the internet while Naruto has... Well Narutards and the "target audience" of several young 6-10 year olds who most likely don't know the difference between japanese cartoons (anime) and american craptoons, who in that hand think Cartoon Network is the one that makes the show. (Some kid posted an 'idea' for an "All Cartoon-Network" Total Drama Island with various cartoon network stars and of course, you guess it: Naruto...)
Viz get sick of Narutards? Not when they make a killing off of them. Instead of getting irritated they'll tell them to watch the anime or buy the DVDs... Profit makes the world go round... (And loans keeps the US in debt... =3 ) Sides, they'll go for Bleach next...
I live in an area where the only anime that is known is either Dragonball Z, (which my coworkers know only the name but not the plot) Naruto, (the one kids go to buy the mercrapdise...) and Yu-Gi-Oh. (mainly for the cards, doy...) The only way I can get people interested in One Piece is by the uncut DVDs.
Maybe if we gather the various One Piece fans in the internet, since I figure there are more fans than just Arlong Park forums, we can host a One Piece Community rivaling that of Narutofan, because that's most likely a contributing factor as to how Viz is treating Naruto and other manga.

Well there are, I just left them out because I thought that no one really gave a shit about Yugioh GX (I personally just skip it along with Bleach).
-
Shoot, I love the GX manga. The anime can suck my balls after season one, but the manga rocks hardcore.
-
The 11 volumes in 3 months does not surprise me. However, I get the feeling that Viz will finish up Alabasta before they consider skipping ahead. If they were, they would skip to CP9. Mainly because at the end of Alabasta you know Robin is apart of the crew, so skipping to CP9 wouldn't screw with that, that and any important details will be covered in the issue of Shonen Jump.
-

I don't give a crap about the Yu-Gi-Oh GX manga… I was hoping it wasn't in there at all, so when I asked I was happy because I thought it wasn't in there... Way to ruin my mood Moria... Whimpers

I've been thinking about this for awhile now, after Viz gets done catching the manga of Naruto up with Japan, you think they will increase the release periods between the other mangas they have? Mainly One Piece, I know they might go for Bleach next, but right now the volumes of One Piece are being released with a 4 month period. I checked in Japan's periods, and found that they are releasing them (One Piece) with a 3 month period. So Once Naruto gets caught up with Japan's, you guys think they will put more "love" into releasing One Piece quicker? I would personally enjoy for One Piece to get released every 2 months, 1 month is pushing it and I don't want One Piece to get the treatment Naruto got, getting released so fast is bad for everyone, hurts finacially. So that's what I've been wondering about ever since Viz announced their plan for Naruto. I was curious and wanted to see when say (for example) volume 24 would come out if Viz keeps this 4 month release period, that volume would get released on June, 2010 o_O. I really hope Viz changes the current release period, because I'd like to be fairly up to date with Japan, not when I'm 40+ years old lol, but I'd be happy to get 3 month periods, Japan get's that so thats no big deal for me ^^'.
-
No I don't see them changing the way they release their manga once Naruto is all caught up. I also don't see where releasing 11 Volumes in 3 months is effecting anything either.
During one of their panels at Comic Con they mentioned Shaman King leaving the magazine due to fans demanding more of it. Now I don't know if they were just bullshiting or if that's the real case but I'm sure they get plenty of requests about wanting more One Piece but it all seems to fall on deaf ears since 2009 is looking to be just like 2008.
-
Seeing as how it's not even in the top 20 mentioned in the link Veemon provided, I doubt One Piece will be released more frequently.
-
Oh, thanks for answering my questions, 4 months isn't that bad, but still wish they would make it less of a waiting period between volumes.
-
To be honest, I am not really surprised at all. Come to think of it, Naruto will have it's 10th anniversary next year, right? Maybe that's another reason why they are doing this.
-
They are doing it for one reason and one reason alone:
$$$
-
Doubt it, if anything they'll release Bleach more than they'll be able to release One Piece.
And with Naruto it's what everyone has said. It is only profit.
-
Well, Bleach is only nine volumes behind Japan and to my knowledge isn't moving all that much faster than One Piece as far as the magazine goes, so I don't think we're going to get Naruto-levels of whoring there.
Eh, I read that the reason Shaman King was taken out of the magazine and made bimonthly was because fans wanted more. Don't know if Viz was bullshitting or not, since I'm sure there are a number of people who want One Piece to take the same route, and it's not like it's running the Japanese releases' asses raw, as we have a 33 volume gap.
Thirty-fucking-three volumes. Geez that's sad.
-
Unfortaintly, it just doesn't matter.
Viz probably doesn't see any gain in doing One Piece like that. While with Naruto they do. And it works.
Just blame… the people. :getlost:
-
K, I blame you, person!
-
Way to go people. :getlost:
-
Fucking people >:(
-
They are the ones that are eating up Viz's Naruto whoring, while not giving a second look to One Piece and the others.
-
I hate to have to say this, but really, you can't expect Viz to stop serving the slavering masses of Naruto fans who buy every volume and start catering to the One Piece fandom who won't buy the volumes because Zoro is called Zolo. If you want Viz to do anything for us, show them that there's money to be made in it, and that giving One Piece better treatment would make them even MORE money. That means getting that stick out of your butt, getting off your high horse, and buying the volumes. Whatever issues you have with them, support One Piece in America, support Oda, and do what little you can toward getting One Piece a decent release schedule in America.
-
Well said. I do my part every few months and walk down to my local Borders and buy the new volume and thoroughly enjoy it, only to come back here to find people who can't get over ''Zolo'' and ''Boost'' and claim it ruins the entire series for them.
You know, I bet people wouldn't get their panties in a bunch so much over ''Zolo'' if Viz had used it from the beginning and it wasn't from 4kids. And for those who say it sounds dumb, you hear it in every single anime episode you download, so you should be used to it by now.
-
I agree. People need to get off there High horse and support One piece. If there such dedicated fans thy would buy them.
-
If the people who didn't like "Zolo" would buy the volumes, it would speed up their US releases.
Also, posting Gravy-kun's sig everywhere will bring the Funimation dub back to US television.

The first is true, as sales would probably skyrocket. The second is not. Seriously, forum signatures aren't going to make Cartoon Network decide to put a show that got ratings that they considered bad back. Especially because Cartoon Network seems to be against anime that doesn't give them merchandising/huge ratings (e.g. Bakugan and Naruto), and because Cartoon Network is sort of run in a soulless, "gimme-ratings" manner these days, and while 6 years ago they might have been willing to give One Piece more then 6 months to find a niche and not been as demanding as to the ratings levels, now… They're too judgemental to allow much of anything a second chance, especially with less than stellar ratings. (And I don't mean "less than stellar" as a sarcastic way of saying bad. I mean quite literally that they want ratings that will "reach orbit" so to speak.
-

Viz uses Roronoa Zolo because Shueisha owns the copyright to said name, which seems to escape the notice of most people. It's only 4Kids' fault to the extent that they didn't actually register the names of characters that they were going to merchandise; had they done so, then Viz would have continued to use Zoro because they had no financial stake in using the name Zolo.
-
If everyone who thinks that Viz is doing a shitty job decided to suck it up and buy it anyways, there's a strong possibility that it would result in them putting out the book faster. More sales and all that.
With that said, it's still moronic to think that it would somehow make them more willing to do an actual good job on it.
-
"Zolo" doesn't really bother me. I know who they are referring to and read past it. As to the other stuff, it could be worse.
I think the real culprit behind the manga's mediocre success in the US is the anime. It's initial release was garbage and it turned off a lot of people.
-
Well the September releases have been added and no signs of One Piece but there's no signs of Naruto either so it seems the bi-monthly schedule will indeed stop.
So just like this year Bleach will round out 2009 with 4 volumes and One Piece with 3 unless some unforeseen event occurs which is pretty unlikely.
-

I actually found it here one day on someone else's and was like "What the hell… Bring it back to American TV..."
I buy the volumes now purely out of looking at the extras.

You completely missed the point of my post. I posted those two statements hoping that everyone would realize that the second wasn't sincere, and therefore that the first one wasn't either, but I guess too many actually believe in the power of forum sig protests for that to have worked.
I'm very aware that forum sigs aren't going to affect a large company's decisions. But a few message board dwellers ending their boycotts aren't going to have a big effect either, for the same basic reason: what a few people on the internet do doesn't really mean anything. The number of people who can honestly say "I'll buy the US releases when Viz does things the way I like" is much smaller than you're making it out to be. All them suddenly getting over the name changes and buying every One Piece volume wouldn't make a noticable dent in the sales.
-

Yeeaah… I'm calling bullshit on this statement. There's quite a few of us, but not enough to cause a drop in sales.

Ah, I'm sorry for misinterpreting what you were saying. So you were saying that both were equally unlikely? Well, as you saw, I agree that signatures aren't going to convince Cartoon Network to put One Piece on. But I think you downplay the amount of people who don't buy the volumes because Viz uses 4Kids terms. I'm not just talking of Arlong Park, I'm talking throughout the fandom. I'll be honest, I think there at least 1,000 One Piece fans in America who don't buy the volumes from Viz for such a reason. Possibly more. 1,000 makes quite a bit of difference in sales, especially in a niche market such as manga.

I'd actually agree with the 1,000 estimate, but I find it hard to believe that would be a big difference percent-wise. I've admittedly never looked at the numbers regarding manga sales, but it doesn't seem like it could be that niche of a market when Barnes & Noble carries at least a hundred different series.
And Buuhan, read the post right above yours.

This is the sales data for volume 18, which came out in June. It doesn't cover ALL of the volumes sold, just the ones through a certain distributor, but I'm not sure where to find out how many copies of each volume sold overall. You'll see that One Piece volume 18 is number 88, with 1,526 copies sold. But if 1,000 copies were to be added, that would put it at number 44, and above all manga that came out that month except for the Bleach volume that came out in the same month. So I think 1,000 people would make quite a difference.

To be more specific, Diamond distributes only to comic book stores. In other words, those sales are only indicative of sales in comic book stores, which is such a small portion of the manga market that it's barely worth commenting on.
Manga does almost all of its business in book stores.
The biggest flaw with using that data outside of that, is that the manga that will sell the best in comic book stores (outside of something like Naruto which sells well everywhere) would generally be titles that appeal more towards people who frequent comic book stores.
So that 'extra 1,000' would just be a blip on the radar, no matter what.

You just won this entire thread.
Years and years ago I used to buy Manga from VIZ before I knew any better. I had no Japanese knowledge so I just assumed that VIZ was doing a good job on all the different titles that I was reading. I picked up so many different books all bought through VIZ's mail-away catalogs. I really liked the artwork. I got very interested in Japanese and learned the language. I started buying up books from all the different VIZ series I read, and comparing them to the originals. Nine times out of ten the VIZ books were severely lacking in their translations (okay to be fair it was/still is more on the localization end). It was like they just got the gist of things and they were totally okay with it. Over the years my contempt for the company has only gotten larger. I refuse to give a company money for doing a thoroughly terrible job at every turn. VIZ doesn't give a shit about any of the Manga they translate. To them It's only about money.
I wish that a company that takes translating Manga seriously would have gotten a hold of "One Piece". A company like Dark Horse. Dark Horse's translation work on "Gunsmith Cats" for example, is flawless. Every bit of dialogue is translated with extreme faithfulness to the original in mind. You can read them side by side and the only difference between the two is that one is in Japanese and one is in English. If a company like that would do "One Piece" I would have no problem buying and English copy of the book to go along with my Japanese one.
