Anyway, I hope they blaze through this arc fast, it's an average arc at best. But I'm sure great animation and directing will make it much more fun than the manga.
It's weird that Katsumi is not doing anything yet, my best bet he will do chapter 523 or 524.

that epsiode was amazing the detail on zoro's face and body and the scary look of Kuma it was awesome and also the way Zoro really outdid himself for Luffy.

Eisaku Inoue. A simplified description of his art is ''Oda's in color and movement''. He did Movie 7, Movie 8, Merry's funeral, Crocodile's defeat, Kuma's appearance on Thriller Bark, and a handful of other episodes over the years.

I don't watch anime too often, only fillers(if they are good) and some key moments..but I wanted to ask how have the animators handled liquid animations?
Because in the manga
! there are some pretty impressive scenes right now, with Jinbei showing us his skills in water and of course Magellan's devil fruit.
I'm just curious, since these moments aren't that far away.

Well duh! Amazon Lilly was just a fun cool-down arc like Davy Back fight or arguably Jaya. It wasn't meant to be a stellar arc to top previous ones. It was just meant to be goofy little fun and giving Mr. Oda a chance to express his creativity with an island full of women. Personally, I found it interesting and funny, you'll hardly see me going OMG "BEST ARC EVAR!!!" over it.
But I digress, we're probably going off-topic.

Regardless, I definitely remember a number of people weren't exactly pleased with it, but this really isn't the place for that.
Anyone else find the art/animation in 408 sub par at best? I was pretty disappointed in it. One of the worst looking episodes I've seen in a while I think.
Honestly, I thought it was pretty solid. The drawings weren't fantastic but they didn't offend my eyes like some of the other animators' work, and I liked that the movements were cartoony and well that… things actually moved! Seriously, I felt like the OP anime was becoming a glorified slideshow for a while, way too many long pauses and reaction shots.
408 was average at best, no ugly shots, stuff were actually moving, except when the snakes appeared, but I understand what the animator was thinking.
I find him 10 times better than Fujita, As long as there is no Fujita then I think it will be fine.

I don't know, if you've read my review on Inoue he's been taking long breaks from the anime since Skypiea mainly contributing to the movies. I think he may be doing a lot of work on Movie 10 which is why we haven't seen him that often. I think the reason I lot of people like Tate is that he's the second most Oda-ish animator and he has a Movie 6 flair to him when it comes to his animation (this is also the reason a lot of people dislike him, as well).

Anyway, moving on, this week we had a new animation director, Toshio Deguchi. It was, obviously, his first time working on One Piece, and it showed. The first half of the episode I feel was solidly average. Luffy looked noticeably more rounded and childlike, and the Gigant Pistol animation was nice. The second half, however, slid down a few pegs into the area between ''passable'' and ''mediocre''. A big problem there was the faces, which looked rather simple and kinda thrown together, like someone was holding a gun to the artist's head.
Now, part of this is due to the fact that many of the people were in the background, and stuff that's in the background is always drawn simply, and many of the Amazons had simple faces to begin with. Compare how the more complex Sweet Pea and Nyon came out in comparison to Marguerite and a bunch of other people during the bath scene. It honestly looked like Deguchi was just in a hurry to get the episode over with by that point.
Another thing that kinda bugged me during the second half was that save for the reaction at the end that was taken straight from the manga, for some reason Marguerite's face couldn't really get much emotion across apart from Dull Surprise (think Keanu Reeves). She looks better in the prevew for next week, which is drawn by the veteran Taleo Ide though, so I'm going to chalk that up to a combination of lesser skill and unfamiliarity with the One Piece style.

Oh, this doesn't have anything to do with Deguchi, but I did notice that they darkened Marguerite's hair from the opening. Now it's a more goldenrod color than the paler blond it was before. I think it looks better, though I'm still used to the silver/white that nearly every coloring I've seen around these parts has used.

He's Kintaro, and he is voiced by Masako "Son Goku" Nozawa, heh.
i knew that the baby character sounded familiar yeah its Masako Nozuma yeah she also does Doctrine in One Piece which is one of the top reasons why i really like Drum Island and am happy to hear her in movie 9.
they used to call her lady's boy because she did characters that were of young boys but she doesn't do much of that anymore and does of older women, but she comes back to Son Goku and such.
top notch voice actress her voice is very iconic, also umm i noticed too the baby is very similar to that character in One Piece with the big axe i am almost catching up there.

I actually disagree a bit. Oda Eichiro's designs for the manga have been rounder since the end of Water 7 and I think Deguchi captured that quality near accurately. I actually like his animation style or to be more specific I like his drawing style. He does seem to have a bit of ways to go as far as animation (i.e. movement) goes but I think for his first outing I'd rate him as a B-. His premiere episode is still better than a few animators who have been with One Piece since the beginning (I would name names but unfortunately I don't feel like going over all my old posts to do so:getlost:).

Heck, actually, I think Oda's art has become a bit rougher and lost some of the finesse it used to have ever since Skypiea ended as far as the mains are concerned (Compare the Robin of old to the Robin of today, for instance), but hey, I still love the detailed, low-tech nature of the art and its uniqueness and energy.
However, I stand by my comment on the second half of this episode being rather sloppy.

Haven't you ever wondered why the whole episode doesn't look the same and the animation varies from scene to scene? Because different animators work on an episode depending on the budget given, the more the budget the better the animators, the job of the supervisors such as Inoue is to draw the key frames, and it's the job of the animator to fill. Of course that's not the only thing a supervisor do.
The Zoro Vs. Kuma scene from the moment Kuma finds Luffy up to the moment with Zoro eyes before Kuma mentions Vegapunk,was done by a great animator who worked under Inoue since episode 336. He even worked under Tate in 404.

One reason I don't like reading the scanlations is that all of the crosshatching and line shading that Oda uses doesn't always come out very well, and as a consequence, occasionally makes things hard to follow. But, luckily Viz is going to have that giant volume rush next year, so the nice volume quality should hopefully alleviate those problems.
And to clarify on my previous statements, when I look at Oda's character art now, the lines and curves, especially of the faces, look a bit more rough than they used to be, and in some cases look uglier, mostly in the shape and placement of the eyes and mouth. Part of this is caused by the scan quality, but even without that problem, it's still noticeable.
Let's see if I can try to illustrate what I'm talking about….

The change in style doesn't actually bother me much. While I like the curvier, more detailed style from the middle of the series, I also like the more angular, less labored over styling of Oda's more recent art. He's just developed certain polished habits for drawing the characters more quickly and simplified as a result of drawing them all hundreds of times. I think this has actually made certain characters look better, like Franky and Usopp. I've liked aspects of his art at all stages, even at the beginning when he wasn't very technically skilled, so I doubt I'll ever be disappointed.
Heh, the style is pretty hard to judge for me. Sometimes I don't even think the shape of the chracters changes much at all since the style is inconisitant in a way it sets different moods(Like sometimes Luffy would look young and round, and sometimes mature with a head around the size of his neck). Looking through the raw volumes I have, I think it Oda started experimenting with a different approach too linework at the Davy back fight where almost everything was thin to a point the style itself looked very clean. That style gave more room for Oda to draw alot more in one place, be it backgounds with tons of chracters, or texturing. It was a change from Skypea where the art focuses more on mian players with think bold lines and extremly detailed backgrounds.
Then aound Water 7/Enies Lobby, slightly thinker lines were used in places where hatching was needed. Then we come to the intro of Thriller Bark where shaping the backgounds and making its scenery flow with those backgounds with alot of black ink was appearent. Overal line quality on chracters was bit stranger here at times, especially when I noticed the hatching lines were thicker than it it was. I suppose that had to do with the backgounds and the ton of collateral damage Odz was doing that had to be inked within deadline. Off course there were places where an overal chapter would look as clean as Davy Back Fight chapters(the one with the reveal of Laboon being related to Brooke). So yeah, I don't really mind… It's either Oda has different assitances in and out, or it could the task of the chapter itself.
Currently, I see the same style used in Thriller Bark but more improved. Looking at it now, the shaping looks really good and it helps for compositions. Chapter 532 is probally the best example since the characters flowed really well.
Opinion though. I miss the thicker lines too, but during those days where was not much going on the the panels. Not a bad thing for say. Oda is just doing things on a bigger scale now.

I disagree, looking at both comparisons, I like the more polished, simpler art. It looks less messy in my opinion:/

Luffy: The Jaya panel has some thicker lines like the nose. I don't care for either. Both look good. The eyes were more oval than round back then. A point for older style. The shading below the chin look much better in the new one. It's like it goes with the light rays instead of vertically. Some missing details can be blamed on the smaller panel size.
Zoro: Here the shading turned the other way round. From going with the light rays to vertical. Bad. The old grin however looked more sinister and considering the situations are very alike would have fit in again. Other facial shading does the rest. Huge turnoff for the Arabasta pic is that the sword in his right hand seems to be pointing backwards at Zoro. Foreshortening where it does not belong. And where the heck are his earrings?
Nami: Once again the shading changed. To the better this time. However she has a ridiculously small mouth now. In contrast to Luffys her eyes are more oval now. Also the linework got thicker for this one. Her eyelashes and the hair outlines most noticeably.
Robin: Kind of unfair comparison cause the former has this in OP rare “wind in the hair“ effect that makes a character instantly twice as hot. Her eyes have changed. The white ring got bigger which I don't support. Robin most distinctive feature, the sharp nose, is hard to compare cause of angle issues. Super negative point for the old picture is her hand though. If an amateur posted that on Deviant Art he/she would have been scolded for that super long fingers. Just try putting you wrist on the chin and make a 90° angle at the same finger joints she does. Look how far up the ear you get and how far she does. Luckily her fingers got a lot shorter in the meantime.
Franky: The former has full face shading since its awesome-introduction-time while the latter is just an everyday talk panel. His facial outlines are more developed in the first one with the nose and the fore head looking noticably different.
In the end I don't think there was much of a style change after all. He seems to change shading and linework at will and at any time. Depiction of eyes varies as well. But at least what I've seen from this 10 pictures he got rid of some nasty perspective errors. My $0.02

Nothing better than comparisons. I definitely prefer the new art, Oda have improved a lot. Even the backgrounds are more detailed, I always look forward to his spreads.

I just take those vertical lines as his quirky style so it doesn't bother me. Most manga artists have those sort of unique artistic quirks.

Are those two made by the same person or group? I noticed the overuse in still(recycled) faceshots as well…..

If you mean episode 375, then that's the worst supervisor...I'm really hoping he got fired this time, and the new guy who did 408 is his replacement. His last episode was 398.
