Heh. If Tate was the designer/chief animator for the series he could hog the best key animators for himself and supervise them on big episodes like Maeda and Nakatsuru did on Dragon Ball Z. :p

Yup. Maeda Minoru did Dragon Ball and the first 199 episodes of Dragon Ball Z before Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi took over for 200 through the end of Dragon Ball GT. Nakatsuru's art was so spot on even Toriyama couldn't remember if he had drawn a piece of art or if Nakatsuru had. Nakatsuru eventually went on to design Super Saiyan 4, but before that he was key animating and supervising the best looking episodes of the series (Vegeta versus Reacoom, the Bardock TV special, Trunks versus Freeza). Tate could wind up in a similar position if he wound up in a design or chief animator role.

Thanks for the info. This is giving me hope for some reason.
Was there a break b/w Dragonball and DBZ?
-
Nope. The final episode of Dragon Ball aired on April 19, and Z began on the 26th.

Good, so a new series is possible for One Piece as well. Might as well explain Tate's absence for the past year.

One Piece seems to be the main profit for Toei in 2011 and 2012. So, I think it's the right time for Toei to care.
-
Yeah, no break. I think the only major change to the crew was that Okazaki Minoru left as the series director, a position he held with Nishio Daisuke. Nishio stayed on as director all by his lonesome for Dragon Ball Z, but it was during Dragon Ball Z that we began to see more key animators join each episode. The bigger budget episodes had about five or more key animators beginning
(supervised by Shimanuki with key animation from Tate and Hisada). Toei has the talent, they just have to employ it. -

Tomita may stay away longer than we expected.
-
For those who saw the extra 15 minutes for Movie 8.
Zoro Vs. Luffy was amazing, of course that's Tate.
Also Kenji Kuroyanagi did some key animation with some explosions.
-
That recap segment (or at least the action parts of Whiskey Peak) had better animation than the entirety of the movie that follows.
Why on earth did that film not have such a segment to begin with is my question? It's incredibly inaccessible to non-fans otherwise.
That certain part of Luffy vs. Zoro was done exactly the same as a Tate segment from Luffy vs. Lucci
-
Yeah, Tate's stuff was great. I wonder if higher quality clips will appear, assuming anyone recorded the movie's airing.

My pet theory? They were stretched for time during production and the opening was cut. It also explains the animation problems with the rest of the movie, assuming they were that stretched for time. I think Movie #9 avoided this by being supervised by Tate, who doesn't focus on detail as much as Inoue might. Strong World also had an additional six months, which might explain why it had solid animation. Throw in Oda's hope that films would become bi-annual so they could be higher quality and the lack of an traditionally animated film for 2010 and 2011 and you've got an interesting situation, I say.
-
I have to say, during the time of Movie 8 and Enies Lobby, the Animation Quality went really down during that period for some reason.

lol, I had the same thoughts. That looked better than the whole movie for sure, also Inoue's style looks a little bit different here.
So this is what Kuroyanagi and Tate(Don't mean his long absence) was busy with recently.
-
Well, now that I've seen the extended movie #8 scenes in directly, I think Tate was really rushed during Luffy versus Zoro. There really isn't any discernable choreography, so it's a real disappointment.

This fight was like that in the manga, also it looks like Tate is quite busy at the moment. He is probably working on the 12th movie, and also on One Piece part 2.
Anyway, about part 2…I think they will kick it off with Hisada. Second and third ep might be Shigefumi, Takeo Ide or Kawamura. And hopefully the 4th ep is Tate, since that's were the action begins and is the Romance Dawn chapter of part 2, unless they use someone normal with special animators like Shida.
-
Okay, I'm a little lost here. What's this about extended scenes on Movie 8? What was extended and can someone post some caps? Possibly links to footage would also be nice.

The recent airing on Fuji TV had a new fifteen minute opening scene that re-created Whisky Peak with Chopper and a few other changes.

Edit: darn you yuugi, beat me to it
basically it was extra footage at the beginning of the movie, which was adding in the strawhats journey to whiskey peak.
here you go: (not sure if the videos are active anymore though)

Who did the Usopp bit this week? It seemed to stand out, most of it anyway.

Wow. While this was a nice little revision from Toei I find it a twisted irony that this is the first movie they did this with and it just so happens to be the only one that's dubbed in English.

yeah lol, im wondering if funi would get the chance to re-release the movie with the new material, but chances are it might not be that worth while for them.
-

Yeah, that bit stood out for sure. But it might be one of the new animators, cause I saw new names in today's episode and some that appeared only once before, so it seems that it might take a while before we know who did it.

I don't like Bleach, but that bit was really well animated.

515 - Takeo Ide (Robin, Brook and Usopp)
516 - Yukiko Nakatani (Chapter 597)
517 - Kazuya Hisada (Time-Skip - Chapter 598)
518 - Masahiro Shimanuki (Chapter 599)I am really happy with this list, except for Shimanuki doing chapter 599. I hope he gets good animators and doesn't do any key animation.
Nakatani ending the first part of One Piece and Kazuya Hisada beginning the "New One Piece"….That was a nice touch, TOEI!
Edit: BTW, thanks for the answer XMURADX. I thought I recognized his style from FMAB… Pride vs Alphonse, right?

Ah, Nakatani's a good choice to close out the first part of the series with. I'm looking forward to that. It was a given that Hisada would do the first episode of the second part, so that should be good. I hope Shimanuki's episode is better than some of his recent outings.
-
Mostly as I predicted, although I think it's a bad choice putting Shimanuki on the second episode, He better not fuck up Zoro's entrance.
-
Where Naoki Tate? who do you think will be next Animators? Yokoyama? Inoue and Katsumi can be on the next rost?
-
So can someone show me some Hisada animation or pictures? I'm not completely sure what his style looks like nowadays. I've been rewatching my One Piece DVDs lately so I don't know how he may have improved since those older episodes he's done. Also how does Nakatani's art look?
-
Hisada's been the animation director for the openings ever since Share the World if that helps. He's also the character designer, so you can just look at that JUMP scan that shows the post-timeskip Straw Hats to get an idea of what it'll look like. His art these days is pretty clean and solid for the most part.
Nakatani's art is really good. The way she draws Luffy kinda reminds me of Tate's style in some respects, but without the trademark roughness.
Here's my master list of caps for all of the current animators, Hisada and Nakatani included. It's a little outdated though. Once the timeskip episodes start up, I'm going to take new ones.
-
515: I'll be even stronger! Captain Zoro's oath
I read and paticipated in many dumb arguements about Zoro's second-in-comandness, but this, this is certainly a first.

Much appreciated.
-
Oh Lord, Ide, Nakatani, Hisada, AND SHIMANUKI?! Epic. I hope Tate teams up with Shimanuki again. Then again, maybe Hisada will borrow Tate, too. It'd be awesome if this could be the regular rotation for a few months.
-
but this, this is certainly a first.
Heh, we better wait Newtype for the episode titles. Maybe it's "Zoro's oath to the captain"?
Anyway, Zoro shouldn't even show up on 515, unless they fuck up with two or three crewmembers giving them less screentime than the others. -
Yeah, i've checked 515's title and i think i translated it wrong.
It's more like: "Oath to Captain Zoro" instead "Captain Zoro's oath" (ゾロ船長への誓い = Zoro senchou e no chikai).Sorry.
-
I'm interested to to know if there will be any new special key animators. What I think, we will be seeing some special scenes from Tate, Kuroyanagi and Naohiro, and possibly Shida as well, since he haven't worked on anything for a while now. Still, I hope to see new animators as well.
I hope Tate does 520, or probably it might be just Katsumi. Inoue will probably do 521 or 522.
Don't forget that the FI arc will definitely look good at the beginning, so they won't go all out at Sabaody. -

Unless they toss in some filler episodes between Sabaody and Fishman Island. Hopefully…
-
I don't see how they'd be able to fit in much filler, though. Maybe expand on some conversations, but I doubt there'd be much more than that.
Not like the anime really needs any filler episodes or arcs at this point, anyway.
-
@Yuugi's:

I don't know if there will be filler, but I really hope for some filler as well, cause this is their only chance.
Hopefully, the opening will look better than the previous ones.
On a side note, I talked to Yoshimichi Kameda (The guy who did all the awesome crazy stuff in FMA Brotherhood) and I told him that I hope to see him work on One Piece one day, since he worked on Naruto and now Bleach. And he said that he likes One Piece, but he didn't get a job offer to work on it yet, sadly. Since he is a freelance.
Oh, I wish if I could contact Toei directly. But they would never listen to crazy fans like me :P
-
Oh wow, that'd be awesome to see. I wonder if he's tried personally offering his services?
-
@Yuugi's:

I don't think that's how it works. I think the Studios recruit animators when they need them, specially freelance ones.
He will be working on Bleach 341, and his next work will be on a Bones show for sure, since that's what he stated.

You actually had a talk with him (via email)? Oh man, that's pretty amazing.
Is it the director of an episode that decided which animators they want to use? It would be awesome to see Yoshimichi do a scene for One Piece.

Yeah, via twitter.
Yeah, but sometimes. Let's say Mamoru Hosada he decides who works with him when he was an Episode director. Only big guys or talented guys can do that. I noticed that this business involves a lot of doing favors.
BTW, Yuuki Kinoshita returned to OP, and did some key animation on 514. Today's ep had many good animators like Hitoshi Kamata, Megumi Akiyama, Rie Aoki even Shimanuki worked on it . I've yet to watch it.
-

Does he have any sakuga amv? Some of his recent works in Kaiji and Tiger & Bunny caught my eye..
-
Does he have any sakuga amv? Some of his recent works in Kaiji and Tiger & Bunny caught my eye..
No, but he have been an animator since around 285. most of his works are under the good animation directors.
Do you know hat he did in T&B and Kaiji? to be honest I have researched him a lot, but I couldn't pin down a confirmed scene for him other than Chopper falling to the boiling water at 419, and probably Akainu punching a hole in the ground in 476.
-
There were scenes in Kaiji 10 and T&B..16, i think, which shared a pretty similar style of animation, and Kamata worked on both episodes, so i just assumed it was his work. These two series usually don't have many scenes of impressive key animation, especially Kaiji for obvious reasons, so these ones really stand out.
-
I would be grateful if you could pin point those scenes for me, so I can check them out.
-
when you people talk about 'key animation', what does it mean ? whats the difference between animation and key animation ?
-

Animation is just in general moving images. Within animation "key animation" are key shots or usually the main frames in an animation sequence. In-between animation is usually the animation of movement that tends to not be very detailed and can link the key animation frames.
