I'll admit the reason that I didn't like it at first was before I watched, the commercials made it seem like a giant monster anime. After giving it a chance, I really liked it. As for GT, it felt too boring and funi admitted to taking out episodes that they thought were "boring" <_< .
-
I don't really have a problem with the DBZ dub, EXCEPT for the first season of it.
-
Its horrible….
Do I even need to say why?....
-Horrible music
-Horrible voice work
-Horrible script
-Dumbed down -
I love the voice acting. I just can't stand the Dub script and name changes.

**Well, I agree with you that the script kinda sucks, and it's definitely dumbed down, but for the most part I thought the voices were good. Of what I have seen of Japanese DBZ, however, the music is the same.
-
Voices…..even when I was crazy about the dub.....I was annoyed by them.
-
idk when i whatced gt in japenese ss 4 goku sounded too much like a kid i thought
-
Because it's a dub. Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand…. because it's a dub.
-
It sucks. Plain and simple. I can't decide which was worse - the dub music or the horrible voice acting. Oh wait, the dialogue was pretty bad too, when they weren't following translation.
At least the first season had a spectacular voice cast.

**i see your point, but i hated season 1's voice actors. goku didnt fit him at all.
-
OH god, I HATED Goku's voice in japanese. It's so high pitched and squeely and raspy.

That's all part of his charm. I mean, if you grew up in Japan watching DBZ without hearing any other dubs you would find it impossible to imagine him with a deep voice.
-
The dubs stinked.
I loved the original Japanese show.
….still can't believe Dr Kureha is voiced by the same VA as Goku..... -
but i like the dub VA better vegeta and goku's were better than the japanesse but HORRIBLE RAP!!
-
Heehee.
Well Vegeta's VA is sorta okay….but Goku's is...meh. -
Maybe it's just me, but I liked the voice acting from the first season a lot more than the later ones. Goku's was retarded but it just got worse whenever they changed it, as did Gohan's. The censorship and scripts were atrocious, but I could stand the voices and I was able to sit through and watch it. Come on, who honestly didn't like Piccolo's voice? :P
But I still "liked" the Japanese version better, Goku's voice fit his personality in my opinion… the original DB is still my favourite. DBZ was really mindless and I won't even get into GT
-
The first season had a pretty good voice cast. FUNis was alright… but Krillin's was just awful. And a lot of the edits/name changes were pretty dumb.
-
Worst of Funi's voices was poor ol Kaio-sama.
-
It has to probably be the script and music. The voices, I don't mind as much as I do the script and music. The music is just terribly annoying grunge rock. The script is horrible.
This all came to me after I watched the original Japanese on the DVDs. The music and script are just so much better than the American version.
-
I read viz's manga…...and found myself VERY releived for reasons I couldn't quite explain.
-

Might I ask your opinion of Dr. Kureha's voice in OP?
The first season of DBZ done by Ocean was damn fine. It had its faults but I have to say I even liked some of the voices better than the Japanese parts (Raditz) and in some cases they fit the roles beautifully like Nappa. Vegeta's voice was even kind of neat even if they reason they made it raspy was insulting to America's intelligence.
After that even season 2 of the Ocean dub was downhill. And from there it just got worse.
-
I'm not a fan of Goku's japanese voice either.
And yeah, the american DBZ dub had HORRIBLE music. Especially the movies… ugh.

What reason was that?
-
I really liked Vegeta's Ocean voice… he doesn't scream every line like Sabat does.
Chris Sabat is either a hit or miss actor in my opinion. His Piccolo and ALEX LOUIS ARMSTRONG are pretty damn fine, I think.
-
His Piccolo sounds like a broken Air duct sucking in several bags of dobermans.
-
I think it's OK. Not the best, but eh.
His Armstrong is awesome though. I was kind of worried when I heard that he was his VA, but… he was probably the perfect match for him.

Hell, yeah. Hearing his voice was weird at first, but when Armstrong takes off his shirt, it's really great.
-
They need to redub all of DBZ with the newer voice actors like Colleen Clinkenbeard,Vic Mignogna, Justin Cook, Caitlyn Glass, R.Bruce Elliot, Allison Retzlof and Travis Willingham.
Is it just me or does dub Yomi sound like John Goodman?????
-
What reason was that?
Too many normal male voices during a fight would be confusing for viewers so they made his voice raspy so people could tell the difference.
Don't you feel smart now.
Gotta love that piece of shyt company
-
errr you know sean schemel is a great VA for goku, chris r sabat plays vegeta really well he uses his voice for kuwabara also ive noticed!
-
Yes, Mr Chris Voices Every Second Character Sabat. There are times when the voices are really badly directed and it makes it hard to watch.
The music can feel out of place at times and it drones on and on playing over the top of all the sound effects, it's nice to listen to seperatly though. Except for the movie music and GT's music.
Z is just a half assed effort from Funimation compared to their other dubs. -
errr you know sean schemel is a great VA for goku
No I don't know. He'd make a damn fine goofy ass Usopp though.
-
I liked the voices in the Ocean Group dub, but everything wlse about it was bad. The dub has some bad voices, bad script, and horrible BGM. Some of the name changes are bad too, they pretty much dumbed it down.

He ruined Goku. He turned him into a sweaty annoying beef-cake, completely steamrolling the simple-fool he ought to be.
-
The Ocean Group were decent at it, BUT THE HORRID EDITED THEY HAD TO DO, just destroyed all respect for that dub.
Once it got to the Android Saga, it was freaking awesome to me. Great voices, I liked the music, DEATH, it was cool
-
As with OP, I don't acknowledge the existence of dubbed DBZ. It's a disgrace. I may let bashings of it slip from time to time (p.o.s. FUNi) but I learned much since my fanboy days and the best thing I've learned is that if people enjoy it, that's what matters and if you can't say anything nice, don't say…..much
-
-God-Awful VAs (Yes.)
-Name changes
-Really, really bad BGM
-As Zeph said, really dumbed down script, lots of bad humor added.Sure, Goku's original Japanese seiyuu didn't exactly fit, but that's because people were so used to little Son Goku.
-
I've never wacth that much of Dragon Ball dub s I knew little about the edit. Can't hear voice cuz deaf me is

**Is that why Goku has a kid voice while being an adult in DBZ? Because everyone did,nt want his kid voice to go?

They understood how crappy it was? Awesome.
-
Well hey…..when an innocent kid voiced guy is turned into a sincere Bruce Willis than theres a certain response that must be understood.
And that is...Apalled.
-
The reaction of Japanese fans to dubbed DBZ is ABSOLUTELY hysterical. I should take a picture of the face they make next time we host. It's almost the same look of pure horror and disgust each time.
You HAVE to do this.
-
there is a difference from the funi dub and the funi dub that was on tv (cartoon network). the funi dub was done pretty much exactly like the japanese, everything was uncut. but then they put it on tv and cut stuff out and made it seem like a stoopid kids show. for example i watched db on tv and it seemed ok, kinda childish though. then i downloaded it uncut in english (but if you press a certain button on the keyboard, the language simply changed to japanese) and damn, there was so much stuff missing that should have been there. so imo it's just how they edit it for tv that makes it bad, the uncut dub is great.
-
hhhmmm, why do people hate the DBZ dub. Three words….Fat Buu's VA. I quit watching it after the last episode of DBZ aired because it started becoming less Dragonball and more Drag-on Ball, always w/ the flashbacks of something that happened 1and a half eps. ago and the animation started sucking in DBGT. (Example: Those really blocky charchters with badly anjimated movement.

Whats the point of whatching uncut dubs? When they offer subs too?
Furthermore, you miss the issue of….voices not going away. -
The Ocean dub is alright in my opinion. Granted the censorship isn't overly great and the way they didn't say "death" etc. even though the FUNi version did. However I do prefer most of their voices. In my opinion Ocean's Mr. Satan and Fat/Mr Buu are way better than FUNi's.
Meanwhile FUNi's VA's aren't as good but are lighter when it comes to censorship.
I wouldn't say I hate either one, because when compared to the OP and SK dubs (for example), I feel DBZ wasn't dubbed to bad. But they could have done a better job in my opinion.
-
some of the voices in dbz were cool like cell's :)
-
Which Cell?
(all 3 sucked if you ask me, though the truely awful one was the middle stage)
