Some don't, but some do. 5 out of my 7 manga "Gods" did: Dragonball, Hunter X Hunter, One Piece, Naruto and Bleach. I try to give everything I read a good chance. I am very good at determining what I love though.

Not really, Naruto start off strong with Zabuza arc and look at where it is right now. Bleach start off weak and have a strong mid point but look at where it is right now? I would use JJBA as an example because it start off as HnK ripped off on part 1 and 2, but part 3 and so on, it was one of the most influential, creative and innovative manga out there influenced lots of game character, and even CLAMP artists. A lot of great work start off slowly because the author takes time to build on their momentum.
Naruto definitely not one of those because Kishi had gives all out on the first part but losing his creativity on the second part. Same with Bleach. Kubo have plenty of creativity going on during SS arc with a Captain Bankai and Shikai, but during Hueco Mundo, most power up are basically shooting laser and explosion based attack.
-
-
I forgot to take Zabuza into account, but even so it felt slow at the time, I only got into Naruto via the anime to start with.
I didnm't feel that about JJBA, the only reason I dropped that was the sheer length of it, and even then I still made it through the first saga.
-
I find that series that take there time end up becoming better in the end.
-
Yeah sounds like wine- better maturity over time. Oh what do I know I'm not an alcoholic cough I mean wine conesseur XD

These are manga gods now? O_o read more.
@wahn: And what's this about JJBA 1 & 2 being HnK clones? in style maybe but story… hell no.
but yeah, since Naruto ripped it's chakra system and "chunin exam" from HxH, and Naruto's attacks are from Ninku, and the plot is similar to Flame of Recca.

and to add my two cents in on that rant.
Flame of Recca is better than Naruto
-
i thought everything before killua's rescue arc was still pretty damn good, but maybe that's just me. the hunter exams were pretty fun. but yeah, the series matures a lot as soon as it hits the Yorknew arc, since a large moral and mental aspect is implemented into the series that's been used ever since
-
hunter exams are the best ! here is my favorite chracters in hxh ! list :
1- hisoka
2- gon
3- killua
4- sulliva
5- netero
6- zeno
7- bisuke
8- kurapica -
I loved the Recca anime but for some reason didn't like the manga much. Maybe I was sick of epics at the time, it's bound to happen considering practically everything I read can be considered epic in length, with the exception of a few one shots and single volumes here and there such as Stray Dog, Sachie-chan Guu, and Sandland.
For stuff I really love, Naruto and Bleach amongst them I'm more forgiving of the faults. Besides Naruto and Bleach have some amazing characters, they just haven't been played well for a while, especially in Naruto. Anyway this is about HxH. If only Togashi had been without hiatus, if he had it would probably be longer han Naruto and Bleach now.
-
you should give FoR another read than friend of gon and luffy.
I liked HxH from the begining since togashi is my favorite mangaka plus when I heard that HxH had the same type of storytelling that the chapter black saga had but even better. I was even more excited seeing as how that's my favorite arc in YYH.
-
I might because I am giving things I dropped second chances and hey I'm not regretting the decision with Kenshin and Kenichi! Even Reborn is getting better now that I have got past the 1st 7 volumes of "gag" material. Plus Recca directly inspired my current training arc in my second novella so it deserves another go.
I would probably read it from just after the anime since I do have a LOT of manga to read but at the same time a LOT of uni work and kanji coming up soon. That might screw up my numbering on MAL but oh hell it isn't perfectly accurate anyway.
I didn't actually like HxH but then my best mate got into it after I showed him the preview in the US edition of Jump, he d/loaded the anime and made me copies, then I was hooked ESPECIALLY the Ryodan arc which was the first thing I ever granted an 11. This is how I am able to go beyond 10 out of 10 now when ranking Dragonball, HxH and OP.
-
I fucking love this manga.
LOVE IT.
With every new chapter, its status as my absolute favorite is reaffirmed.
-
Youhou new chapter out.
I like this fight, I like it a lot. Togashi always finds ways to make a fight interesting and to top it of this fight of monsters (who must be the top of the top of the HxH-world) does not diminish the worth and appreciation of other fights of less powerfull people. -
so after all that it comes down to stamina?
-
The art this chapter was quite stylish.
I am considering to finally read this. -
Togashi just bitchslapped me with fucking awesomeness this week. FUCKING AWESOME CHAPTER. Goodness, I love it.
If not for the looooooonng hiatuses HXH would've been my most favorite manga and One Piece would've been my second.
One Piece's epic return and HXH's over-the-top awesomeness… It's a great week.
-
Hope you guys like the translation for that chapter I did… took me like all day with how complex it was. I'll be happy when the fight with the kind ends. Then the plot will turn from being based on these battles to... something else.
Also, maybe the two guards will show up.
-
HXH amazes again. Seems these hiatuses have caused that art to become extremely good. I love the narrative-type style Togashi uses, which I've stated many times. Some of the pages were awesome as well.
!
Love the top panel.
Top panel again. Stunning.
I want to see Netero's next move. -
Eh? You kidding? If anything it's not as good as the last batch of ten. Still it's pretty decent which is all it needs to be.
-
Not really feeling these chapters as much as the previous ones. Thanks for the trans though, Kewl.
Netero's next attack should be interesting atleast. So far the battle has been slightly insipid though.
-
Even having long monthly chapters would be nice, anyways over the top chapter which points to this battle coming to and end but at the same time showing that netero will go out with a bang, everything else is meaningless and pointless and hopefully the next chapter will at least have 75% focus on this fight.
-
this chapter was nothing short of awesome to me.
!
I just love how netero is thankfull to having the chance to fight a worthy opponent. While mereum admire's what netero can do. Togashi did do a great job with balancing these two characters out. Not having the power scale tip off balance.
-
I know it's just the tail, but every time I look at King, I think of Cell.
-
The king pretty much is cell with a much better personality.
I remember moria saying this a long time ago.
-
Sweet, sounds cool. I should try to read the manga before this point.
I bought the Viz release of the anime and really enjoyed all of it. Then when this topic said the manga was back, I figured I'd check out what was going on. I'm a bit lost, haha.
I've heard there are OVAs for the arcs after the anime ended, so I hope Viz releases those fairly soon. Still need to pick up the fourth boxset, though.
-

What I don't get from that panel is that why is Zeno slapped in there. Isn't the King only admiring Netero?
-
@Thousand:

Are you kidding? This is the best chapter we've had since the dragon dive. Besides, how can the last batch be better with all those octopus shit?
What I don't get from that panel is that why is Zeno slapped in there. Isn't the King only admiring Netero?
I think it's more of the King developing admiration for humans, at least a few of those really strong ones. It's like he's seeing them, not just Netero, in a new light.
-

I was speaking art-wise-_-
It's too early to compare them by story quality.
-

the line says "his enemy" so i'm taking it that mereum is admiring what the humans can do. He seems to be most impressed with netero.
-
Netero is just bloody amazing. Hope the old man survives at the end but I kinda doubt it… Well, when he dies it will surely be with a DON!
Can't wait to see his next technique~!
-
I hope neither of these guys wont die… both are so awesome.
Netero is so badass and manly and King has growned a lifetime charecteristically on just span of dozen of chapters, I really admire both of them and it would be terrible waste to see either to perish.
But they are having too much fun now and with magnitude of their fighting I fear that there wont be not much left to bury for loser of this fight.
-
the fact that netero knows his attacks don't work on the king and yet he's still so confident makes me wonder what his gonna do next.
-
Whatever happens as stated above we can expect Netaro to go out with a bang. I would love Netaro to beat the King, but the King's quick ability to adapt in battle makes this seem not 100 percent possible. I doubt anyone else is at the King's level right now, at least anyone currently fighting the ants.
-
great chapter as expected…
but i have a problem..
how could ANY fight in this manga top this strenght those two show us...
how could possibly gon gaining more power than that...i think we see a fight right now which will be considerd to be the fight of the two strongest in hxh history...
i mean even hisoka isn`t even near that level so far... -

-
Don't forget Flamingo-kun there are speculated to be maybe another 4 or so hunters who are on Netaro's level, but it is likely he is the number one hunter, he is the chairman after all!
-
@Don:

Because this is likely it, it's the apex of combative strengths in this universe (obviously it is unclear where Ging falls between the two) but at this point it doesn't really matter. The fight serves as a benchmark of what's achievable at the top, what Gon or Killua might conceivably be able to do someday.
how could possibly gon gaining more power than that…:
Outside of some horrible plot contrivance that enables Togashi to end this story quicker, I don't think we'll see or need to see Gon achieve 'chairman' like strength (maybe show something in a time skip in the last chap) as it's likely to be unnecessary to the story and to the journey these characters are on.
-

I see, my bad.
For me it's just only slightly better as the last batch. Minus the center page 2-page spread with Zeno in this chapter that is. That's quite good
-

netero is pretty much going to do to the king. Just like charles bronson did to the skin head looking guy in death wish 3 with a rocket launcher.
-

Isn't 90% of HxH plot based on fight? I think no other manga out there matches the fights in HxH in that it's complicated and hard to predict how they will go about. The outcome is always nice, but I love the battles and enjoy reading every detail.
I'm actually tempted to reread as i've forgotten about nin, nen and so on :P
edit: Reading the wiki for nen is not as hard as one would think after you have read/watched every chapter :P
-
Very much of it isn't… If you recall there aren't many actual fights. I could go through it... But most of the Hunter Exam arc was based on individuals overcoming physical and psychological challenges. The Celestial Tower had fighting but a large portion of it was made about developing Nen and the psychology between Gon and Hisoka and those 3 other guys. The York Shin arc was largely about making money and Kurapika's revenge and how he worked with his group, then the sort of chess game with the Genei Ryodan which only involved manipulating people with the oathkeeper. The only fights were between Kurapika VS Uvogin and Kuroro VS Zeno and Silva. The rest were usually just people being killed instantaneously. Then Greed Island didn't really have any fights until Gon, Killua and Bisuke fought the Bombers. Unless you count the dodgeball game with Reiza. The beginning of the Chimera Ant arc had some fighting of those low-level guys... and the rabbit guy and Leol and Gon VS Knuckle. So there was a bit more there, but the arc lasted much longer than all the other ones.
In this arc, by "these battles" I meant the assigned roles of each team to fight each Guard. Gon & Killua VS Nefelpitou, Knuckle and Shoot VS Montutuyupi, Morau VS Shaupufu, Ikalgo finding Palm, and Netero VS the King. Besides the fact that Gon and Nefelpitou still have some part of an hour to wait and haven't done much yet, plus now the unplanned parts will occur.
-
Since hxh is starting up again I am thinking about watching anime/reading manga. So what do people think about anime vs manga, which should i start with?
-
The anime is fine to watch, there are no major differences except like 2-3 filler episodes. Like a couple episodes of Gon saving animals from the circus in the beginning and that "bonus exam" where they have to meet and cooperate with people. That plus a bit of censoring, like Hisoka comes carrying that black hunter's head rather than just wearing his hat in the anime to imply he killed him… Instead of showing everyone's heads explode in the Greed Island arc they just showed them walking away with people screaming and blood splattering on the ground... some of the gore's a little toned down. But basically it's the same, you wouldn't be missing anything major.
Oh, also there are some bad romanizations in some versions. I think the scanlators wrote "Pansy Gum" instead of "Bungee Gum" for a while... And the fansubs I think wrote "Gorein" instead of "Goreinu"... which are incorrect, but the names are generally about the same and those can be spelt more than one way anyway. Nobody does anything blatantly wrong besides that.
Ya may want to watch/read both anyway. Reading manga doesn't take too long. -
@Battle:

well, you`re right but in one of the next arcs there will most likely be a enemie which is even more dangerous or stronger than The King ..
togashi sure could break here my exeptions , but most of the time in mangas the enemies from arc to arc get in a way more and more stronger or brutal…
so showing us now what is able to achive in strenght in seeing the the strongest guy fight sure isn`t just for nothing..
like "friendofluffyandgon" stated in HxH are still some guys out there which have nearly the same strenght..and in my eyes some of these could be enemies in the end...so that gon has to gain a strenght rly close to that we`re seeing now is actually that what the story is bringing us to..
it`s still a shonen manga thought
-
yea, it's still a Shonen manga but Togashi has a way to bucking shonen cliches like mad. I've never had a problem with the strength build-up of Killua or Gon, and I think it's mostly because of how people keep acting when they see them flex their muscles. So many people (wing, razor, bomber) have been really scared and called them "monsters"; implying that no one is suppose to be that strong at that age. I can't see HxH going any longer than one more major story arc, so I think they are being ramped up for full power soon; unless we see some horrible time skip, which I doubt.
-
I'm hoping for the next arc to be focused around leorio.
-
Thanks kewl0210 looks like i will start with the anime then.
-
Reading the basics again, would it be far fetched to assume that netoros next move will involve specialization technique? So far he has been conjurer and he is pretty old and has alot of training, it shouldn't be hard for him to have come across specialization.
Or will he try to match kings power with CQC, i can't imagine netero matching the king is physical power or nen.
