What's the word on Zoro/Zolo's attacks. Will they be direct translations or the japanese names.

Yeah, not a huge deal, but it's still a misspelling that doesn't have to happen.
How did VIZ mess that up in the first place? I can understand Roguetown since that's what 4Kids used, but how did they get Elbaph?
-
I think the biggest problem with the romanizations we're getting is mantora, especially since mantra is a REAL word and mantora isn't. Toei is on my "Companies who PHAIL" list.
-
Oh yeah what about zoro's attacks?
36 pound cannon?
Rising phineox?
[insert japanese name here]? -
Do any of you guys think it would be a good idea to call Toei Animation and get our issues with the Big Bad List sorted out?

It may or may not help, but it's definitely worth a try.
-
Okay, so I might call Toei Animation Inc. about the Big Bad List, and although it's already been stated what's on the list, I don't keep track of what has and hasn't changed, so can anyone please pitch in and tell me anything and everything I need to know?
-
Well, mainly see if mantora can't be changed to it's proper spelling, because mantra IS an English word. Other than that I'm pretty sure it's mainly problems with spelling people's names. G. Zass can be that for the TV dub, but I would like to see it as "Jesus" for the uncut DVD.
-
The name changes don't bother me to much. I mean, most anime go through name changes and One Piece isn't any different (major or minor).

If you do this, please don't mention specific details (like me for instance  ).
-

Like who for instance???
Anyways, yeah, if you get in contact, just say you found out the inherent problems from "sources".

you just got sigged

Aren't those pronounced the same way too? Anyway, I can only assume that it'll be fixed in the uncut version, as they did the same thing with DBZ. (Hercule in the edited dub, Mr. Satan in the uncut one.)

Seriously someone do this. Just because Zoro has to be Zolo doesn't mean we have to put up with all those other name changes. Do you actually know of a way to contact the US Toei? I'm not seeing anything on their site.
Make sure you tell them that Choppers attacks are supposed to be Point and not Boost also. Nobody can copyright the word "point". >_>

I've called their Los Angeles office a few times before, and I should have mentioned this earlier, but now that I've read Mato's response, what am I supposed to say if someone asks how I found out about the name changes?
Oh, and Mato, is VIZ actually directly involved with Toei Animation about the translations?
-
You use common sense like how I did it when I talked to FUNi. I referenced the interview when the announcement came out. The part where they say they are gonna stay close to Viz. It's all common sense from there on.

I don't know. It's a mystery

Yeah, but the interview never mentioned anything about G. Zass and Mantora.
-
Here is common sense comes in. Using the reference from the interview say, "it can be assumed that…."
If you don't know where to go from there, please don't call. -
Well, it looks like I can't use common sense, and so I won't call, because to me assuming that someone would translate Mantora and G. Zass is too much of a coincidence.
-
It was in the game that came out in the U.S. You start off with asking if that is enforced and explain why it would be wrong. It's not hard.

Oh I completely forgot about the games. Which game(s) do I need to know about, and what is there that I need to know about?
-
How did VIZ mess that up in the first place? I can understand Roguetown since that's what 4Kids used, but how did they get Elbaph?
Because they are overrated as a company and only seem to put effort into series they know will be popular.
-
So they get a few name translations wrong. That doesn't make them all bad.
-
Didn't they make a few screw-ups on "Naruto" as well?
-
No, you're probably hearing that from Narutards who can't think of a good enough reason to hate the dub, so tyhey have to make things up.
-
Those narutards can be pretty irrational. I remember one guy in high school who said he was pissed that they turned "Naruto" into an American cartoon.
But I heard that in the VIZ adaptation of the manga they replaced Sensei with Master, so I coud see how that could get people riled up.
-
Oh I completely forgot about the games. Which game(s) do I need to know about, and what is there that I need to know about?
I think it was Pirate Carnival or Grand Adventure that had G.Zass.
"Mantora" was never mentioned in either of those games, I'm guessing it's just Toei Engrish bad translations.
-
I was just thinking, during the TV broadcast how do you think they'll handle Usopp's Certain Death Ketchup Star? During his fight with Luffy he uses it and making it appear he just caughed up like a gallon of blood.
However even tho it is stated it's ketchup after it I don't think they'll allow it to slide on TV.
-
How about we have a while to go. They may do something where edits decrease little by little as it progresses. Also, air times don't match out. They can simply just cut the frames where you see it plop if CN is that anal.

Actually, they will probably allow that. There was a similar situation on "Codename: Kids next door". Granted, the amount of blood was a good deal smaller, but still, it's something, yeah? Besides, that's what, Y-7? OP will be PG.
-
I'm not much a fan of KND so I dunno what scene you're talking about. How similar is it to this scene tho?
-

Point, gear, level, boost etc are all stereotypical shonen upgrades.
I don't see any problem at all.
Neither should you.
-
Hey Mato, another question.
I know you're nowhere near these eps, but I was wondering how you were gonna handle Kumadori and Fukurou's (of CP9) unique speech patterns.
Specifically, I mean how Kumadori says "Yoyoi!" before almost everything he says, and Fukurou says "Chapapa" after almost everthing he says. Will those little phrases be in the subs? I won't ask if they'll be in the dub as we've pretty much established that's not your department. Hopefully, as they're just kinda nonsense phrases, they'll just leave it as is for the dub. You should make them a note like with Mellorine.
-
I;m wondering how 1 scene of OP will be handled. In the JP series, Kaku does Shigan(I believe thats the attack name) to zoro and blood pours out of the holes that were created in zoros chest and also out of his mouth.. Is it just me or will this scene just be cut short and not be like dramatic like in the uncut series?
-

They'll propably just edit out the blood, at least most of it. Or they might just remove the scene completely.
-
Considering that they're only working up until 206, there won't be an answer to anything CP9-related for a long time.
-
It's possible they'll just remove the splash of the blood, but still leave in the static blood on his hands and on the ground. Well, ketchup. >_>
-
Yes! Ketchup!
Because you see, Kaku stabs people with hot dogs.
-
Another question for the Matoman. We've already established that the attack names on the subtitle track won't have colourful effects, but I have another question regarding attacks. Will the attack names be in Romanji with a a little translaion nnote underneath, or will it just be in English (on the subtitle track)?
-

Not too sure, it was a while since I've seen that one… It invlolved scissors and (as the viewer discovered later) ketchup. Nowhere near as intense though, less blood.

@Gerchak:
Mato, what's your favorite anime? I feel like asking a question that doesn't relate to One Piece.
Unless the answer is One Piece XDI don't know, I don't think I have a single favorite one. It's hard to have a favorite of anything really. Dragon Ball for various reasons (I kept encountering it throughout my life and always liked it, never once imagined I'd be translating it), OP for similar reasons (saw it when I was in Japan, taught me lots of Japanese), Det. Conan for similar reasons too. I'll always have a soft spot for Berserk – I know lots of people hate the anime but not me, plus I saw the anime before reading the manga. I also like the shows that all of Japan seems to love, like Sazae-san (yes I'm a dork) and Doraemon (OK I'm even dorkier, plus I fansubbed a few eps yikes) and Shin-chan (which I also somehow managed to wind up translating!)
BTW, on a completely different note, the last FAQ question's answer is sort of misleading. It's possible that things are dubbed in proper order, but things leading up to that might not necessarily be. So in the end, it kinda sorta doesn't even matter (and I have no idea where the dub is at at any certain time).

You should make them a note like with Mellorine.Yeah, I'm not sure about that stuff. Usually with stuff like this I go into the "we'll figure it out when we get there" mode. If I'm still translating the show whenever FUNi gets there then I'd probably keep them in but leave notes to the writers explaining stuff. I've already set things up to keep the writers informed about character traits so it'd be easy enough to pass the info along to them.

No idea. I'm not connected with the TV stuff in any way. It's a long ways away, so who knows, maybe if by some miracle OP gets to have less and less cuts (or gets moved to another programming block) stuff like that can be left in. But that's just wishful thinking at this point of course.

Do you mean like the whole "Gomu Gomu no" thing? Sometimes with Dragon Ball I was allowed to do this, but with OP we have to go with what's on the list, so it'll be just English most of the time (most of Robin's stuff obviously isn't, and some of Zoro's stuff is still Japanese, like Oni Giri).
-
Didn't they make a few screw-ups on "Naruto" as well?
I think that the blonde girl (Sakura's rival)'s attacks had different names than what they were originally in the dub and sub. That's the only specific one I can think of though, I don't really follow Naruto much so I wouldn't know for sure.
The only major chages that I've see in Viz's One Piece are Zoro/Zolo (an issue that's pretty much dead now) Coco Village/Cocoyashi (not a big deal) Roguetown/Loguetown (included an art edit) and Elbaf/Elbaph (and the whole Fable thing has never been confirmed, nor has Oda written it out)
Snail Snail Phone I'm not sure about, I think it's seen multiple translations but I'd have to check. However, those are the only major ones I can think of.
Also, just to clarify.
Aside from Mantora (and obvious Engrish issue) all those names on the list that are funky are from either Grand Adventure of Pirates Carnival. So it's 4Kids (possibly Bandai as well) who is responsible for most of these problems.
Being consistent with the video games was mentioned in the interview as something Toei wants. That's not a good idea on their part.
Viz has kept everything in their translation faithful and accurate aside from the things I mentioned before. So if Viz had alot of involvement, I doubt we'd be seeing so many weird name alterations.
-
Since Elbaph is never spelled out within the series itself, and I assume it'll still be pronounced the same, I don't see a major problem. Annoying, sorta, but it's not as bad as like G.Zass or something (actually, G.Zass will still be pronounced the same, so nevermind).
-

Isn't Elbaf supposed to be "fable" backwards, though?
-
Isn't Elbaf supposed to be "fable" backwards, though?
It was never official. Just a combination coincidence and fandom theorizing, and I think it was Cinder who first thought of that way back when….[/could be wrong]
-
You know even if these weird "translations" don't get fixed, think of it this way: "Dragonball Z" had HIFL (am I remembering that right?), "Naruto" had "Believe it!", and now "One Piece" has G. Zass. See, it all works out in the end.
-
"Naruto" had "Believe it!"
Naruto's "Believe it!" is an adaptation of his Japanese "Dattebayo!" which has no English translation. "Believe it!" is a way of getting the annoying tendency across.

Hey, it unintentionally annoyed the fans who watched the Japanese version, which doesn't really make sense considering what you just pointed out. But it was a dub change that annoyed people, and that's what really matters here .
And speaking of which, I find it pretty stupid that fans got so uppity about "Believe It". My stupid friend actually thought it would have been a better idea to just cut those extra seconds of mouth-flaps just to avoid "Believe It". I know this issue has been addressed before, but I just felt like mentioning my take.
-
Actually, the "Believe It" thing shows how fans can actually make a difference. The main problem with the phrase was simply that the fans didn't like it, and now, Naruto hasn't said "Believe It" in the dub in over 40 episodes.
