The Official Funimation One Piece Thread (Airs Sept. 29!) Read First Post

Ah I see… That makes sense.
-
Yeaaaaah…every bit of that happened here.
-
So Funimation was at AKON right? Any news there?
-
I got this off another forum I go too. I'm not sure if it was mentioned here or not so here it is for those who haven't seen it.
Wow, that is hilarious. That post you just quoted is my post from another forum and all the information in that quote I got from this thread. I had to double-take after reading that.

Let me guess… court-records.net's forum?
Small world ::shakes hand:: By the way nice Jack Spicer avatar.

@Ao:
I wonder, are ppl voting Vic because he;s one of the few voice actors they know thanks to CN? Or because they actually prefer him. I could see him doing Usopp, but I feel Spike Spencer is a MUCH better choice.
One VA is currently active with Funi. The other hasn't been very active in the voice acting world in a long while and when he was, he worked for ADV.
Think about it.
Personally, I think Brian Drummond would make a pretty good Zoro, but he's in Bandai's stable, not to mention the fact that he lives in Canada. So as far as likely candidates go, he's not exactly in the running.
-
Spike Spencer is active, though. He's in the Bleach dub at the moment. I don't really think he'd work for Usopp, though.

That's my opinion as well, Spike has a great voice, but he just doesn't work for Usopp. It'd make him sound too much like Jason Griffith's Usopp IMO. And let's not go back to that.
-
Johnny Young Bosch would be fairly decent for Usopp, yes.
I found a good match for Nami and Zoro while playing Rogue Galaxy:
I think Natalie Lander could pull off Nami pretty well, and Zoro could be done by Steven Jay Blum.
Maybe Greg Ellis for Shanks?
And I still think Mary Elizabeth McGlynn would make a very decent Robin.
-
@Fire Fist:
Zoro could be done by Steven Jay Blum.
Steve Blum is too deep for Zoro,I can see Steve Blum playing Franky when he is useing his Kazuma(Scryed) voice when he says WEAPONS LEFT!
-
@Ao:
Well he hasn't done that attack since Alabastar has he? I don't think it matter much until they go back and start rereleasing episodes.
I really wish they could've gotten this out sooner. It prolly would've helped if it was released during the height of Pirates 3, to capitalize on the whole pirates craze.
Actually he used the attack again in his fight against Luffy where he blew everything up to kingdom come with his gas dials. Funnily enough, he used the salsa star in the same battle.

He is? IMDB says nothing. :(
-
Yeah. He plays Hanataro (the timid 4 squad member if you watch the show).

IMDb also was the one to credit Hulk Hogan as playing Franky.
-
Personally, about dubs- I HATE seeing the SAME VA over and OVER again.
I mean, I dont hate there voices, I just cant stand how they make every character SOUND the same. For anime, you need VAs who've done cartoons. They know how to change their voices- make it sound great and more importantly- fresh.
Uggh. I dont know much about FUNi or any dub company, yet I hope they try something new and pick VAs no one has ever heard before.
It worked in the movies. -

Actually, I think that was Wikipedia.

I think the dude who voiced Yomi would make a good Crocodile and I can see the guy who did Hiei as Zoro if he deepened just a bit.
-
they already did crocodile.
and whoever said sanji dub was teh only thing 4kids got right should eat something….unpleasabt......like a clump of dirt.
and ed via fullmetal for usopp or luffy is actually sound nice, but im thinking more for usopp.....
i dunno about the rest, but the more i think about fulmetal voices, i kinda see hawkeye as robin......
-
I agree with the whole Vic sounds surprisingly well as Luffy. I would have never guessed it, but I like it a lot.
-
This is the video that made me realize just how good Vic could be as Luffy (Just ignore that it's his Ed Elric voice):
Also regarding the video, I don't think Crispin Freeman works as Zoro, Catlin Glass works great as Nami, and PROOF that Spike Spencer doesn't fit as Usopp.
Also, I'm surprised no one's mentioned Greg Ayers' name for a part, he does dubbing for FUNimation as well. I'm still trying to figure out who he could be though…

It worked in the movies.Well even in Japan, certain voice actors gets reused over and over and over again, and it's pretty obvious sometimes.
But I agree, it'd be nice if here in America there'd just be general voice acting. There's this unnofficial seperation between anime voice actors and non-Japanese cartoon voice actors. I mean, some of the best voice actors we have here are the ones who never work on anime.
Some of the best work comes from voice director Andrea Romano. She really knows how to cast roles well, and her work on stuff like JLU and Teen Titans is VERY impressive.
There's a ton of voice actors out there to choose from, but anime companies like to stick with most of the same ones over and over again.
People like John Dimaggio, Tara Strong, Lauren Tom, Ron Perlman, or Kevin Michael Richardson are all AMAZING (not to mention versatile) but they rarely (if ever) work on anime.
And given One Piece's wacky nature, more varied voices are really important. If everyone in One Piece starts sounding the same, it'll be crap. Nothing like what 4Kids did (which was alot of the time bad, and at times borderline offensive (Pattie and Carne)) but still, variation and wacky voices ARE somethign the wacky characters of One Piece need.
Come to think of it, Tara Strong might've made a good Nami or Vivi actually.
Susan Eisenberg, who played Wonder Woman in JLU, would make a great Robin.
There's alot of unused talent that would make the anime dub market alot better. And it's not like they're unavailable, obviously they're around to work since they're doing other shows.

Vic as Luffy: No
Crispin as Zoro: Maybe
Catlin as Nami: Sure
Spike as Usopp: !@#$ no -
Spike as Usopp: !@#$ no
It wouldn't be all that bad if he used his goofy, Ginta voice from MAR. Other than that I see Usopp as a role best suited for Sonny or Vic.
-
Whatever voice they pick for Luffy its best if its not something thats the exact same thing as another main character from a popular anime. Its just too distracting for me.
-
Catlin Glass is perfect for Nami! I hope she gets casted.

I think Spike Spencer would be perfect for Usopp. In real life, Spike is very energetic and hyper; he has that umph needed to play Usopp. If you need him to scream, Spike can do take after take of screaming. If you need him to sing (to any degree of quality), he can sing take after take. If you need him to do, well, anything, he can do that take after take.
-
I'm sorry, I'm still rooting for Vic for Usopp. He does work as Luffy but I still think they can find a better match.
And I'm probably gonna be called dumb but I also think they need to fine a female to voice Luffy. Just no shit like the voice actor of Naruto or the 4kids voice actor did.

I can think of some good female voice actors to play Luffy: Stephaine Nadolny(Young Goku),Kara Edwards(Goten),and Laura Bailey(Young Trunks)
-
….no, I don't think so.

That's what I was thinking. I mean, there are some freakin amazing voice talents, yet they stick to mainstream toons or commericals. I mean, I've heard anime VAs get low pay, yet think of how popular they get- specially if they get a spot on a very well known show- like OP. (Just look at Scott McNeil)
Ya'know, Tara Strong could be a pretty good Luffy. But they don't want a female doing Luffy… now THAT is annoying. OPEN YOURSELVES UP TO CHANGE PEOPLE!
Or Dee Bradley Baker- this man's voice is orgasmic ___ He can do BILLIONS of different noises and sounds, very energetic. I can see him doing Usopp- maaaaybe Luffy... (his child voices are kinda meh tho XD) -

Throes, I saw that video and it made me think SS WOULD work as Usopp.
I vote you need to stop being an ass. It doesn't matter if people know him solely from [adult swim] or not. Fact is he's a great voice actor and he matches characters.
You first? I said he was a good voice actor,but just because some ppl are raving that he is the OMFGZ PERFEKT USOPP, doesn't make it true. He's a decent Usopp and a horrid Luffy IMHO. I;m sorry me not blindly agreeing with the popular opinion offends you so,but DEAL WITH IT.
-
I Just Hope That They Do Screw It Up. And Keep Cigarretes And Guns, Etc
Maybe he works for 4kids?
-
@Iron:

The voice actor of Jimmy Neutron does the voice of Zatch Bell.
-
I read somewhere that FUNimation already chose their ideal voice for Franky. I think they said they new what voice to use right from when they got the license. So the voice FUNimation cast for Franky will be…
! DUN DUN DUN DUNNNNN~~~!
! Are you sure you're prepared???
! 100% sure?
! http://cliftonsnyder.net/wp-content/uploads/2007/01/hulk2.jpg
HULK HOGANNo way it'll obvious be
! Macho Man Randy Savage
-
I wonder if they'll be releasing the movies on DVD?
-
….no, I don't think so.
Yeah, Luffy is kind of too old to be having those voices. Unless they pull it off well enough so that it suits him… but at the same time doesn't sound like... how do I describe it... well whatever Gohan, Goten and Kid Trunks sound like. They're good for them, but for Luffy, I don't think so.
I think the person who did Laharl in Disgaea would be pretty good, not perfect though.But I don't think that's gonna happen since she's in a different group. Or not in a group at all. Oo;
-
I'm hoping Chi Chi's VA gets Nami. She has that bitchy yet endearing voice that fits Nami to a T.
-
Nah, Chi-chi's voice is older than Nami should sound.
@Ao:

I was referring to how you were talking about people were only voting for him from [adult swim]. You sound like the people who call those who have only seen anime on Cartoon Network "not anime fans".
-
I've always been a supporter of Vic for Usopp. He'll do him justice.
Sabat can play Zoro. His Yamcha voice (pretty much his regular voice) would do wonders for Zoro.
-
I don't see Yamcha's voice that fitting for Zoro, honestly..
