When he becomes Pirate King, he'll have to give his straw hat back to Shanks, so what was the point of the government calling him 'Straw Hat' Luffy?
About Luffy's title….
-
-
Eh… It's just a nickname. Does the government really know the hat belongs to Shanks? When Luffy gives it back, they'll just think of another nickname. "Black-Hair Luffy?" I dunno.
-
He will be called Pirate King. And I think that Shanks will let Luffy keep that hat.
-
@AD-HD:

That's what I thought too, but it was a promise to give it back, wasn't it?
-
Yes, but what if he gives it back, and then Shanks does what happened all over again, puts it back on his head, he starts crying, and then he says, "no luffy, you keep it, you're the pirate king now…."
We Are plays, series ends
"Besides, we can't let you leave without One Piece, now can we?"
Haha kidding, that'd mean the hat is one piece and that's how the series ends. Completely serious the first part is probably what DOES happen.
-
Shanks'll most likely make a comment along the lines of: "My hat? That's not my hat. That's the hat of Mugiwara no Luffy, Pirate King."
-
Ahh..another topic by good ol' ChopChopCannon.
You can't be serious….they get these names on personal traits, Luffy's being he wears a Straw Hat.
Please, man....just stop.
-
I think if Shanks shaved his head bald or turned out to be just someone who dyes his hair red… He would still be "Red-Haired Shanks".
So when Luffy gives the hat back, he would probaberly still be SH Luffy. But I think Shanks will probaberly die before the end of the series, so Luffy will end up returning it to his grave or something before his own death. Something like that. I dunno. I never really thought about the ending of the series, but generally I don't see Shanks alive at the end, I wouldn't suprised if he was though.
-
I imagine Shanks would let him keep the hat.
-
He'll probably still keep the title, just like Zoro did. Roronoa Zoro 'the Pirate Hunter' or was it 'Bounty Hunter'? Anyway, he did keep it even thou he became a Pirate.
-
He could always get a new strawhat. Maybe the rest of the crew should wear them too, like how the other pirate crews all were the same symbols. XD
-

That's actually a neat idea.
It'd be interesting to see the Strawhats in some '30 years later' epilogue, all of them sportin' a nice little straw hat.
And Usopp is an 'Infamous Man Demon'. …Yet he still shakes at the knees.
-
There won't be a government to call Luffy any name after the series because they will have defeated them in a galactic battle and freed the people of this nation, so we won't have to war with Iraq to find oil for cars.
…..
Seriously...
-
Shanks would let Luffy keep the hat.
(…if Shanks were still alive by that point.)
-
In the end:
Luffy "Shanks! I've kept your hat just like you said! Here it is!"
Shanks "You actually kept that piece of shit? I was kidding when I said that. Geez, what a condom!" -
Well, regardless, the hat is very important to Luffy - and I think Shanks will realize that if/when Luffy tries to return it to him. Even though it would essentially be a very simple act, it was a promise Luffy made ten-plus years earlier that he's still kept. Shanks has GOT to take notice to that.
-
Did shanks really even say He'd get his hat back when luffy became pirate king, or rather when luffy met him again on the grandline as a great pirate…
I think Shanks will let him keep it though whichever one it is...
-
I just thought of something.
You know how Shanks is known as Red Haired Shanks? Well, Shanks seemed to be wearing his Straw Hat since he was young. Think there is a significant reason why HE wasn't known as a Straw Hat rather than a Red Hair?
-
Perhaps he didn't make as much of a fuss about his hat as Luffy has?
He could always get a new strawhat. Maybe the rest of the crew should wear them too, like how the other pirate crews all were the same symbols. XD
Something I can't figure out: Usopp painted the Jolly Roger the Strawhats used onboard Going Merry based on Luffy's design. Luffy had planned all along to incorporate a straw hat into his flag; did the nickname "Straw Hats" to identify the crew come from being Luffy's subordinates, or from flying under that flag?
-
If Van Auge loses both his eyes, can he still be called "eye" in German?
Yeah actually I don't think that's a nickname anyways.
I can't think of a better example right now though.

Maybe Luffy incorporated the hat into his flag as a sort of honor or sign to Shanks. A way for Shanks to knwo he still remembers his promise. If Shanks hears of the "Straw Hat" Pirates, he'll understand Luffy's at the head and intends to follow through on his word. It'd be more unmistakable than simply the wanted poster.

@Impel:
Shanks "You actually kept that piece of shit? I was kidding when I said that. Geez, what a condom!"
HAHAHA XD
It's a promise. Luffy does give his hat back to Shanksuuuu.
-
Shanks is going to be like…You still have that thing? I got a bunch of them from this Strawhat cargo ship we plundered a looooong time ago... In fact I traveled around handin 'em out.

That's a really good point. I was going to suggest that maybe he didn't reach emperor status (or gained any kind of notoriety) until AFTER he left Luffy's village, but I think they were still called the Red Hair pirates even then. That, or maybe there's a hair color theme with the four yonkou, similar to the animal theme with the Shichibukai.
The other thing is that it's possible Shanks didn't bring the hat everywhere with him like Luffy does - that thing might as well be a four year old's favorite teddy bear to Luffy, especially in the way he reacts to anything bad happening to it (don't know if this was the anime taking some creative liscense, but didn't he flip out way back in the beginning when the hat nearly got blown away?), and considering his childish demeanor, there could be an analogy drawn. So he might have gained notoriety for events that happened when he wasn't necessarily wearing the hat.
-
Shanks was known as Red Hair because he gave his nickname like that, right? He gave his crew the name "Red Hairs" and by that name everyone who met them remembered them.
Luffy wears a straw hat, and his flag has a straw hat. No better nickname.Anyways, ontopic, I doubt Shanks will get the hat. Really doubt it. No way possible!
-
Luffy giving up his hat would be like "Dark Leg" Sanji wearing khakis.
-
I don't know why they didn't call him, red vest luffy, because he has that thing on more than the hat. Then they could all be the red vest pirates.
(Shanks will die before OP is over and luffy will lay the hat on his grave, its pretty cheesy but thats probably what will happen.)
-
They go by the Straw Hats becaus their flag has a big ol straw hat on it, I'm assuming.
I don't see why Shanks would want Luffy to keep the hat or why Luffy would even want to as the only reason it's important to him is because of the promise he made. He doesn't fuss over it just cause he thinks it's a really great fashionable hat.
Shanks won't dieee! That would suck. Plus this is One Piece, where you can be electrocuted and shot and blown up over and over and over and be perfectly fine.
-
wait…isnt luffy the strongest pirate from east blue? (according to marines that call him that)
but isnt shanks from east blue too?(considering that he gave luffy the hat in east blue then left) ... so wouldnt shanks be the strongest? :wassat:
-
Shanks is from West Blue
-
oh ok lol

Maybe Luffy would have gained a beard by the time he becomes Pirate King, then he becomes known as the next Kurohige.
Or Shanks will probably give it back to him right after Luffy returns it. I think Shanks wore it in the first place to hide his infamous red hair.
-
Sadly, I think it's going to be one of those cliche moments where Shanks is all: "I'll take the hat back, if you can defeat me in battle!"
Don't do it, Oda!
-

Yeah, that would be cool.
Didn't Roger have moustaches too? -
Sadly, I think it's going to be one of those cliche moments where Shanks is all: "I'll take the hat back, if you can defeat me in battle!"
If that were the case I don't believe that luffy would fight. He would just sit the hat down and walk away.
On topic I believe that he will also put it on Shanks' grave. Although I believe that he is already there and this is all just a flashback of him telling Shanks about how he became the Pirate king. In the final chapter(s) when we finally catch up to the present the navy will just be arriving to corner him and he will be just like Roger and sit the hat down and just let them take him.
Don't think I really believe that I just thought it for a second and decided to put it down.
-
sumtimes i also wonder if all of one piece is a flashback gettong to by a strawhat(mainly luffy).
-

Roger was born in Loguetown, which is in the East Blue, and I imagine HE is stronger than Luffy, so he was probably the strongest man in the East at some point too.
-

I might be listening to the wrong song here, but at time of writing I'm listening to 'We Are', and IMO it just wouldn't fit the ending of One Piece.
So why would it play?
-
Wouldnt his name be changed into Pirate King Luffy after he finds one piece
-
Luffy will gave the hat to shanks, who will shorty die afterwards. Luffy will keep that hat. He will be know as Strawhat Luffy, the pirate King.
-
After returning the hat luffy will hatch a daring plot in which they turn chopper in for the reward, use the 50 beri's to buy a new hat, and then break chopper out of the marine HQ petting zoo.
But really though assuming that shanks is alive and accepts the hat back luffy will most likly just buy or even make a new one. Even if it's not his treasure I doubt he could just stop wearing it after all that time.
-
I think that the Hat isn't this important to Luffy. The promise about the hat is. It represents his children's dreams and the promise that he makes with his hero, Shanks.
When he get the title "pirate king" he will be: Luffy, The Pirate King. I think that you are saying that Shanks will let him stay with the hat, cuz u want it to happen… but i don't think that Oda agree with that...
Whatever, it's just my opinion... and forgive my english, please ^^.
-
heres my opinon.shanks will explain why that hat is important to him, there will be a moment of tears,an then he lets luffy keeps it
