Lupin the 3rd

Just imagine if Gundam had tried to hit here with the original series, instead of starting with Wing?
I like to think it would’ve managed to finish it’s run. And I say this knowing that many kids shows were not known back in the day for hitting 50 episodes.
I always enjoy catching the rare new Cutie Honey content once it arrives; it may be dated for many but it's still always good for a fun time.
What really surprises me though is how small Lupin is in the current Western anime community. Not even the anime Youtubers talk about it very much, which is weird. They usually talk about every bloody terrible isekai that is even slightly popular and claim to enjoy sakuga, interesting arcs, etc. - and yet, the new Lupin series who arguably look amazing compared to most seasonals, have engaging overarching plots for the first time along with great episodic storytelling and feature lots of good comedy don't get credit at all.
To add to what Robby said it also has the problem of having a bunch of content with loose continuity and of course the gimmick of different strokes for different folks.

You imagine wrong. Even in Japan it didn't make 50 episodes, it got cut down to 39 mid run, then they begged to be given 43. ANd that was during the original run in the 70's when that aniation was still current.
Then came the late 90's/00's, and Gundam Wing aired on CN and was a huge hit for them. So then they aired war in the Pocket and 08th MS team and maybe G-Gundam…. Gundam had become a name and a franchise people were interested in and wanted more of... they took a crack at airing the original series.
They pulled it off the air at episode 38 and never finished it. It did THAT poorly they couldn't even bother to air the last week of episodes. They eventually aired the Char Counterattack movie, but original Gundam was a huge flop stateside.
And that was AFTER Wing had already earned goodwill. If they had tried to START with the original? No one over here would know what Gundam was.

Actually I’m well aware of that part I was specifically referring to what you mentioned in the second paragraph about how the show was abruptly pulled off Toonami a few episodes short of it’s end.
And how we randomly got the last few episodes on New Year’s Evil.
And that was AFTER Wing had already earned goodwill. If they had tried to START with the original? No one over here would know what Gundam was.
Maybe but given we got shit like Hamtaro on the block I like to think it’s odds of maintaining relevancy would be 50/50 not 100% lost and forgotten.
-
Hamtaro was awesome though. I unironically love that show and was legit upset we only got the first 105 episodes, (out of 296, and 4 OVAs and 4 movies). So many hamsters we never even met!
It didn't belong on Toonami, but the show was great.
It was the pallet cleanser I really needed at the time since that's when I was big into Berserk.
-
So anyone buying the bait
! that Lupin killed Watson?
-
I mean he gets angry sometimes:ninja:

I don’t know whether to be indifferent or horrified they got that much mileage out of that…….and considering some of stuff that’s come out of a Japan and how much shit that’s been made out of it I’m definitely leaning toward the former.
-
Fair warning. Part 5 (and 6) is the same crew as 4 so the quality is pretty much the same, but if you branch out past that the quality is going to vary wildly as you see more of the franchise. Some of them are fantastic, some are awful.
Most fall somewhere in the middle though. Series 4 is more or less the usual quality.
I plan on watching Castle Of Cagliostro next, it’s on Netflix and you guys highly recommend it so I’m gonna binge it some night soon

If you're watching it on Netflix, make sure to watch that one subbed. The dub is an old random cast that do okay but it's just… whatever. It's fine. And it's also not the REALLY old dub that took some liberties was hilarious.
-
I don't like any of the Cagliostro dubs :(
I mean he gets angry sometimes:ninja:
But he's cool
-
Streamline dub or nothing for me. It was my first exposure to Lupin and you never forget your first. Should've worn an asbestos suit 4 ever in my heart.
Never saw cutie honey, but i mean the intro part that wasn't perving had an interesting visual. If i can get my hands on it i'll give it a watch, i mean you were right about slayer being a fun watch.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I wasn't expecting to be reminded about hamtaro today. What a weird thing that was, it wasn't neccesarily a girls show, but it was so different from everything else it sort of defied categorization. I could literally hear that hamtaro intro as i read it, memory is weird man

Slayers is my all time favorite, I'll vouch for that all day long. I can't vouch for Cutie Honey the same way, I've only seen a little bit of it from my anime club way back in the day, and it was the old stuff. mostly the opening that's stuck with me.
I never sought it out the same way I did with Lupin, so I'm not sure how good it is or isn't, but it had some of the same vibes. I only brought it up because Lupin using hte saem theme for decades brought it to mind.
-
Now, we got an confirmation of the current Lupin dub cast members are back for Part 6.
-
Here's the creditless opening for Lupin, Part 6.
-
I believe it's streaming on HiDive? Not sure if all the episodes are out or if they're staggering it though.
-
Yeah, it's streaming on Hidive. I'm just going to wait for the home video release for Part 6 unless it airs on Adult Swim.
-
So, uh, one ep of the pink jacker has a rather long madonna-esque dance number at it's climax. It was the weirdest thing, but not in a bad way. This is the kind of weirdness they should've focused on, it suits the gaudy 80's colors and silly slapstick
-
I so don’t remember that but then again I don’t remember probably less than half is the series episodes.

What name/number episode is that?
-
I want to say like ep 18 or 19, it's about a mafia guys girlfriend who wants to make it on broadway
-
Oh now I remember the episode that climax though I still don’t remember too well.
-
I haven't watched pink jacket in decades, I don't remember it at all.
Its bizarre, I've basically seen everything Lupin has to offer, but since I started back when it was all bootleg tapes and before it was easy to find on the internet, its been scattered and strewn over like 22 years so it all blends together and I don't remember a lot of it anymore. It'll be familiar if I load it up and start playing it but…
Especially bad with the movies because I tended to get them in bulk so I'd see 4 or 5 in a row and those would really blend together.
Also, because a lot of it was bootleg, its entirely possible I missed a random 4 or 8 episode chunk of red or pink jacket somewhere, but I'll never know unless I got back and rewatch it all.
But there's also just so, so much of it I don't really have a desire to rewatch it all either. I love Lupin but revisiting like 40 movies and 300 episodes again... its too much. Though I'm never rewatching the Fujiko series, I know that for sure.
Probably take another go at Green Jacket now that they're dubbing it for... some reason. I'm not complaining I just don't know why they're doing it since they released the dvds years ago..
-
They'll probably release more DVDs. I'm about to buy my 4th edition of the original Transformers the Movie.
Watched the dance number episode. I actually really liked it! I like when Lupin teams up with another woman other than Fujiko.
I have to assume that Lupin has left messages in gum for Jigen before….ew
BTW apparently Zenigata recognizes the smell of Lupin's farts.( via episode 42) -
Anyone keeping up with Part 6? I thought it was a solid start with some gorgeous animation.
! With that said, WHY DOES JAPAN KEEP KILLING OFF WATSON AND REPLACING HIM WITH A CUTE ANIME GIRL!?
! With this and Great Ace Attorney, I am noticing a disconcerting pattern in how Japan likes to fridge fiction's most lovable sidekick for the sake of drama and moe. -
! Well they did off Watson, by Holmes himself doesn't seem to want his daughter taking her place. And when you make Holmes more humane and less cocaine addicted detective dickhead, there less need for the contrast with the humane Watson.
And oof last episode was a bad one. -
@TLC:
Anyone keeping up with Part 6? .
Nope, waiting for the dub as I always do when its announced in advance the good group will be dubbing it.
And use spoiler tags for crying out loud.
You even asked "is anyone keeping up with this?" before throwing out a biggie. You know better.
-

Gotta have the filler episodes with less money to get to the good stuff I suppose.

! It's an episode one mystery hook thing. The event happened ten years in the past off screen. It's not a plot twist and is pretty obvious in like the first scene you meet Holmes without Watson but with a little girl he's taking care of (who are both in the trailer). It's not a biggie, it's a super smallie.
-
I'm waiting for at least enough of the episodes to come out that I can make use of HiDive's one week free trial.

RetroCrush is going to be adding some of the Lupin the 3rd specials up for streaming for free on November 24. The specials are the following ones.
Lupin the 3rd: Alcatraz Connection
Lupin the 3rd: Operation Return the Treasure
Lupin the 3rd: The Elusive Mist
Lupin the 3rd: The Last Jobhttps://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2021-11-01/retrocrush-adds-shrine-of-the-morning-mist-zetman-anime-lupin-iii-specials-in-november/.179090
I haven't seen any of these specials, so I'll be checking them out. -
I think I own all of those…but it's easy to forget...
-
One good, one great, one terrible and one eh.
Their selection is a perfect reflection on the Lupin tv specials themselves.
-
Lupin the 3rd: Alcatraz Connection
Lupin the 3rd: Operation Return the Treasure
Lupin the 3rd: The Elusive Mist
Lupin the 3rd: The Last JobReturn the treasure is pretty fun since its in reverse of the normal. Last Job is decent but you know from minute one the main hook won't hold, so it loses something.. Elusive Mist is pretty bad. Alcatraz is very nearly one of the greats, only let down by its run time not being quite long enough to play with everything.. but its in my top 10.
So yeah that's a real grab bag there.
My top 10 for the record is (with no real order after the first three)
Castle of Cagliostro
Fuma Conspiracy
Episode 0
Napoleon's Dictionary
Walther p-38/Island of Assassins
Princess of the Breeze
Alcatraz Connection
Tokyo Crisis*
Voyage to Danger
Mystery of the Hemmingway PapersBear in mind I haven't seen some of these in basically 20 years since I got them on bootleg VHS, so they have the benefit of being early on in my Lupin watch and also having faded so I can't really assess them fairly outside of the notes I took at the time. (I realized early on if I was going to watch all of them, with the names chhanging between releases, I'd have to track it somehow. So I have a list. On livejournal!)
Tokyo Crisis has the caveat that it was the very first Lupin movie I saw, possibly the first Lupin thing period, so it has a strong soft spot for that reason and I'm not sure how good it actually is.
I also apparently need to rewatch Napoleon's Dictionary since reaction in here has been pretty mixed to it, and its been a very long while since I watched it. At the time I liked it for not being the usual formula and some strong Lupin/Pops material. It might have mostly stood out at the time just for being different from the other 6 or 7 films I saw at the same time. So I kind of don't want to rewatch it because I remember it fondly and don't want it to drop to middle tier?

Do it and see how it holds up.
-
Do it and see how it holds up.
Is it better to have a fond memory and think something is good but that you think might not hold up… or to revisit it and find out for sure that it isn't?
SUre best case scenario its still good and you get to enjoy it fresh. But when you have other reliable opinions that typically match your own that say its middling... well...
I have less hesitation for a thing I know is good, Cagliostro or Fuma or Ep 0 will hold up every time. But I also make it a point to not revisit Cagliostro too often because I don't want it memorized and diluted... I already know all the beat far too well as is.
I know I'd be a lot happier if I'd never rewatched Thundercats when I was older.
-
Sometimes rewatching old stuff you liked as kid can be sobering especially if you have people who swear by it’s quality. It’s fun to remind people that something wasn’t/isn’t as good as they remember it.
-
Nappy's dic holds up fine for what it is, beyond the unfortunate art style, but since i started watching pink jacket it would probably end up looking better than i remember it to by comparison. It had some nice scenes where Lupin waxes about what Zenigata means to him and vice versa, and the basic premise of whacky races to cancel national debt is funny. The ending escape is still super dumb tho
-
-
I watch Napoleon's Dictionary the other day on Pluto tv. I really enjoyed the movie and I like Fujiko's outfit that she was wearing the race portion of the movie. I know, she's one off character for the special, I thought Agent Kido was a cool character. Zenigata had a lot of great moments in the special.

The english dub of the first episode of Lupin, Part 1 debut this weekend on youtube.
-
Should be interesting to hear the dub cast's take on that series.
Wonder if they'll ever dub Pink Jacket. -

! Damn they isekaied Lupin

So, uh, is this a gag dub or will they play it straight?
-
So, uh, is this a gag dub or will they play it straight?
They played it pretty straight for series 4 and 5 so… probably more straight here since they're less concerned about generic tv audience than they were.
-
I watched the dub for the first episode of Part 1. The dub cast is great as usual and I can't wait for more of Part 1 being dub. I want to mention I really like the music for Part 1.
-
I watched episodes 57 - 60 of Lupin, Part 2 with the dub. I have to say both episodes 59 and 60 were really bizarre and crazy. The giant Fujiko scene in episode 59 made me laugh.
-
First dubbed episode of green Jacket, plus bonus Jigen interview.
The most impressive thing is they brought back the voice actor for Mister X. Who was only in two episodes of red jacket (the first one and like… the 60th one? But he was a Lupin robot in that, I don't remember if he had that voice or not) ) so it's been 18 or 20 years since he was last on as that character. That's the craziest thing.
It's been ages since I last watched this. Its so weird seeing it be so... slow and relaxed? And the character relationships so... new. Like those characters hadn't been dealing with each other for decades.
I remember the second episode with Pycal being way better, and the fourth is my favorite in the franchise even decades later. Not counting the Cartoon Network rerun episodes, the fourth episode of green jacket is definitely the one I've seen the most.
I can't for the life of me remember what the third episode is.
-

They got rid of the "iffy" voice he had originally? (don't want to say fruity like I did in the past)
I can't for the life of me remember what the third episode is.
Lupin runs into a mysterious woman and a gang of drug runners an okay-ish episode.
-
I thought most of the part 1 episodes were good. The 4th as Robby says is great, so is all the Goemon origin of joining the group stuff. Episode 21 feels very much like an early template for Cagliostro. It even has a giant clock tower.
I wish they didn't decide to "nerf" Fujiko. Her cool mystery and messed up relationship with Lupin in the earlier episodes gets replaced with her being just sort of a side kick who doesn't do much. -

Why continue to make Fujiko into a cunning, manipulative, & deadly frenemy…..when you can make her a distressed damsel who when she’s not being held hostage almost always screws Lupin to the wall and becomes a karma houdini most of the time….let’s also for no reason have her cut her hair into a bob for no reason.

Right????
