ive always wondered this myself. I dont think he would have as high of a bounty, but i think hed still be great. also something tells me he would use a sword for a weapon because he looks up to shanks.

I think he'd be a lot less lucky. I mean, the gomu-ness really has come in handy. There are a bunch of situations that he would've died in had it not been for a quick stretch.
Of course, he might be able to swim…And why is everyone always making a big deal of Shanks having a sword?
-
well, i don't think he would have a high amount but i think he would still be a pirate but he does have an advantage…he can swim!!! ;)
-
Hell no!!
Gomu gomu helped him be in his possition right now…
He'll be helpless without it!!
And, it's not advantageous if you can swim...
You can still get gunned.
But still, Luffy would be a pirate though
-
I wonder how someone could even doubt this. I mean he is the protagonist of One Piece and he will become the Pirate King. That´s for sure. If it wouldn´t be for the Gomu Gomu Fruit then either he would have another DF power or he wouldn´t have any. But he would still be the protagonist and he would still be kicking major ass. It´s just that Oda would have had to write some things differently (for instance having Luffy wearing a rubber suit to fight Enel) but saying that it would be a disadvantage is just silly. He´s the hero of the story. And if his powers would be different then he would still be it.
-
But even before he ate the fruit he wasn't a very good swimmer.
-
Well isn´t that something you can learn in ten years?;)
-
if he didnt ate the gomu-gomu fruit, he would have been drowned in his ten years of try to learn swimming.
-
You mean like he drowned everytime he fell in water while he already had DF powers?;)

I'd say no, he wouldn't. He would have died protecting Zoro, or on Gaimon's island. But! What Ivotas said is true. Oda wouldn't just let him have nothing at all, he's the protagonist.
Without his powers, I'd say he'd be close to Zoro without his swords, if not a bit stronger.

I don't, but others do probably 'cause of the fact that he once went at it with Mihawk.

What makes you sure nobody would have saved him? I mean with DF powers he is a hammer in the water and yet he didn´t die so far and he fell quite often into the water.yeah he was ever safed with his df because everyone know that he would die if noone safe him, but without df power noone would think that a pirate cant swim.
-
Well I´m not a life guard and there´s no DF in the real world but when I´m at the beach or a lake or even a swimming pool I can definitely tell you when someone is about to drown if I don´t do anything to save his ass.
BTW, remember when the Strawhats met Mr. 2. They saved him first and then they found out that he´s a DF user. It´s not like they had a conversation first to find out why he requires their help.
-
real world isnt the same as the op world, you know or did you ever see sea kings and porneglyphs in real world? ;)
and remeber what shanks said in the first chapter, he laughed about luffy because he wanted to be a pirate although he cant swim. -
Nine comment about the real world not being the One Piece world. Because I expected such a silly statement I made that Mr. 2 statement. Nice to see you completely ignored it. <_<
Either way to get to your point. If Shanks pokes fun at Luffy for being a bad swimmer doesn´t it mean that it is common knowledge that he can´t swimm and that because of that people would always be cautious when Luffy goes near the water? ;)
And one more reason why Luffy wouldn´t die trying to lear to swim is that he would learn it to achieve his dream. That´s Luffy´s character. It´s the same as coming back from a fight where he actually got killed (the first two fights with Crocodile) actually. He wouldn´t drown because his ambition would help him to surpass his own limits.

Yes! He Will…
Because it is the "Will Of The D's"!
-
In my opinion Luffy wouldn't be as reckless as he is if he didn't eat the Gomu Gomu fruit. He would still have tried to become a pirate, but he would have played out events differently (I'd hate to see him fight Don Krieg >_< ).
Ivotas also had a good point on him saving Mr. 2 without hesitating. Just because a pirate can't swim doesn't mean they have a Devil Fruit power.

I agree, but perhaps not a sword. Probably nothing s he always spoke of what a pistol hes punches were as a kid.

Agreed! There´s no need for the sword. Why not just having him a strong fist fighter. He doesn´t need a specific martial arts technique just a regular bar fight style (as it is typic for pirates).
After all without the DF he could still punch people right? He just couldn´t stretch his arms and label his attacks as Gomu Gomu no…whatsoever. Other then that he could still use thinkgs like Gatling Gun (just without the Gomu Gomu). I mean his DF power allows him to strecht his body parts, it doesn´t multiply them. Which means that Gatling Gun is actually a result of his arms speed and not of his DF power. So basically without the strecht the some attacks could stay the same. They would just look totally different.

Anyway, I say no, he wouldn't. Main character thing aside, his major victories have all come from his rubber powers. His rubber stretchiness amps up his power from the momentum they build up, hence why his arms stretch back so far for the Bazooka.

Luffy still would have kicked ass!
-
When Luffy was carrying Sanji and Nami while climbing Drum Rockies, when Luffy yiped in pain, Sanji was falling down. If Luffy has not ate the Gomu Gomu Fruit, Sanji would got pummeled down to the ground, snow would covered him up and he'll die.

I often wonder how much of Luffy's power comes from the DF and how much comes from himself. For instance, IIRC, Ace once mentioned that he has never been able to beat Luffy in a fight, and that was when Luffy was a kid and before he ate the gomu gomu fruit. Wouldn't it be interesting if his strength is separate from the DF powers? I mean, there are several feats that Luffy has performed that seem beyond just being a rubber man.
-
It really depends. For example, with the Crocodile Luffy fight in the tomb, If luffy didn't have the DF power, He wouldn't be quick enough with his punches and kicks, like he is with the power of the Gomu Gomu no mi, And, I would like to see what he does without the DF power to get out of the tomb instead of using storm to make a huge hole in the celing, and end Croccy's life.

Other way around. Luffy said he never beat Ace.

You sure he wouldn´t be that quick without his DF powers? I can just repeat my argument from my last post, all that the Gomu Gomu Fruit does is giving Luffy the ability of rubber meaning that he can stretch. It doesn´t make him faster, why should it? It´s not a specific of rubber. Strenght and speed is his own quality that he achieved through training. I´m sure he didn´t just sit and eat in his village until he finally set sail to become a pirate. He must have trained hard in order to survive when he leaves the village.
