Chapter 503 "Striping Up The Island" Discussion

Also, I just noticed. The hats the grasshoppers are wearing in the cover have the same pirate logo as Brook's hat.
Well, they also look like his former crewmates. So, I guess their like, the reincarnation of them or something?
edit: no wait, they look like Brook when he was alive, thats what I'm seeing

I think we're just about finished with the build up. I think Rayleigh will have a short conversation with luffy, and then….I guess they'll go out and fight, or something. Although, I think at some point, we're going to check up on Ace.

Best comment on the chapter. XD
Thanks to everyone who brought us the raws and scanlations!

Yeah, it is in the order that everyone was introduced / joined the crew. And no, this does not make Brook the 9th member…
(remember, we don't count Luffy)
Did Oda say that?
wouldnt it be odd that there would be a total of 11 SH pirates…
-
Did Oda say that?
From Stephen's script:
Luffy: Get it now, you big fish?! (grin)
Hnnn…!!
First of all, I have to find a crew.
I want ten people!!
And then a pirate flag! Now, as I never translated the actual words and could not say for sure, to me that says he wants to have ten people. When speaking about an object or group of things (a crew), one wouldn't include themself as part of that figure. I am not swearing by this, but in terms of Oda giving us foreshadow and the rate members have joined over the last ten years I think it is safe to say this is Oda's way of saying "You know Luffy, he is the Captain of my story ~~ he wants 10 crew members, so we will add them as we go".
That is how I see it. Oda didn't say it, but he wrote Luffy saying it. At least, as far as this translation goes.
Also, I like being a smart ass from time to time, so "yes, 11 crew members would be odd"
-
MDM do you know what that expression means or are you just misusing it?
I think you think to low off me =/
-
I know the first requirement to learn the will subjugation technique…: You must first have a scratch on your face. Luffy is so gonna learn it.XD
-
From Stephen's script:
Luffy: Get it now, you big fish?! (grin) Hnnn…!! First of all, I have to find a crew. I want ten people!!And then a pirate flag! The Viz and FUNi official English translations also have Luffy saying he wants ten people in his crew.

From understanding a chaotic situation with one glance, I'd say Rayleigh is the smartest man that's been introduced so far.

From understanding a chaotic situation with one glance, I'd say Rayleigh is the smartest man that's been introduced so far.
Well, let's also not forget Ben Beckman.
-
I think Rayleigh is even smarter than Beckman. No definite proof, or evidence for that matter, but consider that Rayleigh is older, far more experienced, and has performed feats more astonishing than Beckman.
-
I think Rayleigh is even smarter than Beckman
We may never know. Rayleigh is probably smarter, but only by a little bit.
-
10 bucks says Rayleigh has been eavesdropping on the whole show before making his stunning entry
-
Rayleigh's so smart, he doesn't make money, he already owns the world, but it doesn't know it.
Rayleigh's so smart, he can drink all he wants, and he'll score a 400 on an IQ test while comatose and using only his left pinky toe.
Rayleigh's so smart, a single attempt to think by him will cause space to fold unto itself and force Lobster back from the grave. Then he dips it in garlic onion soy sauce for a delicious snack.
Rayleigh's so smart, he taught Moses how to spit the seas and decipher the script known as the "10 commandments"
Rayleigh's so smart, when Jesus wanted to walk on water, he consulted Rayleigh to assess the density and temperature of the sea. Rayleigh said he already told him what it was, what time he would take his first step and when he's going to ascend to Divinity.
-
Hurrah for Rayleigh! The Chuck Norris of One Piece!
-
seriously, discussion in these forums for the past week has been so boring I would prefer watching a show dubbed by 4kids to pass the time.

-
I forsee DoFalmingo having nothing to do with the archipelago….
That's pretty much a given considering that his symbol and the auction house symbol only look similar but clearly are two different ones.
-
I really like this chapter, not a whole lot of plot advancement but definitely a lot or fun to read, especially the Rayleigh parts.
However, why does everyone assume Rayleigh is some kind of tactical genius because he quickly analyzed the situation? I mean, it only takes common sense. He's lived on this Archipelago for awhile so he is undoubtedly aware of the prejudice towards fish-men, as well as the corruption of the Tenryuubito. Given the setting and his surroundings I'm sure the situation would be clear for just about anyone. Not to say he's stupid or anything, I'm sure he's both wise and intelligent, but to base an opinion off of something so evident just seems silly. Of course maybe I'm just over-thinking things and getting carried away, who knows, perhaps time will tell.
In any case, I'm really looking forward to the next chapter, like everyone else here I'm sure.
Also, as far as the whole Nami's feet thing is going, anyone notice that her feet have gotten smaller since the beginning while here bosom has grown? Seriously, I look back and her feet look freakishly large. Personally I just think it's Oda improving his style, but you're free to believe whatever crazy conspiracies you can come up with.

I would like to see anybody try making sense out of a chaotic situation such as a terrorist attack and decide a plan of action, and do all this with a single glance. Not only did Rayleigh achieve this, he instantly resolved it with his power.
-
Rayleigh's so smart he could force LPS' head to explode while doing sit-ups….a lot of them.
-
What DID you think of this week's chapter, Mr. Greg?
As our resident expert on Japan and the One Piece manga, I am curious about and value your opinions highly^^
As for me, I thought it was crackajack!
-
Just you wait, Vegapunk's gonna pw nRayleigh's ass in smartness :D

Again, I really think most of it was common since, he pieced it together quickly with his intellect, which IS pretty cool, but all he really had to do was look over the scene and separate the pirates from the Auction House guards. Of course he was probably already somewhat familiar with the SH pirates since he's aware of who Luffy is and has probably been following him in the news. As far as the deciding an action and resolving it instantly, yeah that was pretty sweet.

Well, Shanks was once part of Gol D. Roger's crew, so he should have seen Raleigh's power several times. What you point out, SN, is interesting, but it's not a matter of power IMO. <3 Oda just wanted to hide his big surprise for the 501th chapter, maybe. IDK.
It was definitively Oda intention. According to stephen translation, in the latest SBS :
@Stephen - SBS Ch 473:
D: Oda-sensei, here's a very serious question. If Shanks was a deck hand on Gold Roger's ship, does that mean the guy who hit him and Buggy when they were fighting in Volume 3 was the captain of the ship? Or maybe an officer? from Sonoe-san
O: Ah yes, the story of Buggy and Shanks in their swabby days. That would mean the captain of their ship was none other than the Pirate King, Gold Roger. The man who scolded the two boys was the first mate. I've had that set in stone since the very start, so I even made sure the anime staff knew that.
Oda has plan for Rayleight since 10 years. Next chapter(s) will be great. Although I guess it'll be about background settings for the New World, maybe à little part of history (Robin will be happy), but no direct hints about One Piece.
D'you remember Luffy reaction when Robin ("evil" at that time) gave Luffy an Eternal Pose ? -
I think Robin will know exactly who Rayleight when she hears his full name. She knows a lot of history and I am sure she studied the D people especially. She has one of the sharper minds in SH crew
I bet she has a LOT of questions for him regarding Gold Rogers, since she knows now he could read / write language of poneglyphs. It's interesting to speculate weather any of that will come up now or later or ever… by that I mean even being part of SH, Robin never found out that there was another poneglyph in Alabasta, the one that Luffy , Chopper and Zorro run into while lost in the dessert.
-

That one was filler, it never happened in the manga.

I wonder if Usopp bounty will be less or equal or more than Sogeking bounty?
-
I really like this chapter!!! Hell YEAH!!!
Btw, anyone noticed Law's polar-bear?
!
How about this?
Blueno's Mask..!
What do you think?!
-
Zoro's swords are drawn on the wrong side on the Jump cover. They are on the left side whereas he normally wears them on his right. And when he re-sheaths his sword when he made the comment "I wanted to slice him up myself", it seems like he is putting it on the left side as well, yet his swords are drawn on the right side the rest of the chapter.
-
One thing I find interesting about this arc so far in regards to the Supernovas is that the SHs appear to be showing off their own way to them as a means not to show power but to show why they've gotten this far with very "un-pirate" methods. Notice how we've got six of the "lower" members (Capone, Bonney, Hawkins, Drake, Apoo, Urouge) when Zoro defended the normal citizens from Tenryuubito, showing their honor in defending the weak. On the other hand, three of the more "higher/special" members (Kid, Killer, Law) were around when Luffy punched Charois, proving that they could do whatever it took, even breaking laws, if it meant defending them. Somehow it does make me wonder how much they're going to take away from these encounters…

I think Oda enjoys drawing bears, Pandas included :D)
That aside, this was really a great chapter. And I can’t wait to see how Luffy will react to the statement from Silvers Rayleigh that he knows where the strawhat comes from. -

Law's bear buddy is actually Blueno! Even though Blueno's currently located at St. Poplar right now…

Considering that Zoro is most likely ambidexterious (neither left or right handed, he can use both equally) it doesn't really matter on what side he carries the swords. (unless there is some cultural reason I'm not aware of)
IIRC he has been switching sides from and too all through the story.

Actually, this happens a lot in OP. I remember noticing that they were on his right side many times, and I thought to myself "Cool, Zoro's left handed!", but then I would see his swords on his left side other times.
Edit:Whoops, probably should have read through the rest of the thread. I guess Gorlom basically said it before me.

Uh, you do realize the cover arcs don't take place in real time, right? They're usually flashbacks, as in, what those characters were doing while the Strawhats were doing something else.

Carrying the sword in the left side usually means you are right handed though (and carrying it on the right means left handed). It's easier to draw the weapon from it's sheath that way.

Right, sorry, I meant the right side, I'll go edit that post now.

I did not. Still, it's been less than 2 weeks in OP time since Enies Lobby was taken down, correct? It seems pretty realistic to believe that former-CP9 is still on St. Poplar seeing as how bad Lucci was injured.
Duly noted, though. Thanks.

There's no proof of that. Stop telling people what to think if you can't even prove that you're right.

Duly noted, once more. Wondering how long it took Eneru to reach the moon. Surely not within such a short time frame, amirite?
Quick side note: You still play Brawl as often as before, gohn? I'm Yan, by the way.
-
Wouldn't Wapols coverstory kinda prove that they don't move at the same speed as the main story?
its in the middle of skypiea after the group split up, so imo not more then a few days can have gone by for the strawhats in the time he builds a giant toy company. (it starts around chapter 240)
-

Actually, I can, troll:
http://www.onemanga.com/One_Piece/127/
They're leaving as he wakes up. They left immediately after the Kuro fight. Where are the Strawhats in that Chapter? On Little Garden. Not to mention the fact that at the end of that mini-arc, the Strawhats are in Rain-Dinners. That same day is the day they defeat Crocodile, then 3 days later is when they show up again, with Hina. You honestly think that they came all the way from East Blue to Arabasta in 3 days in a naval blockade? I seriously doubt it.

Zoro being ambidextrous is probably the case. But the last time I recall that his katanas were on his left side was during his fight with Mr. 1. I recall an SBS where Oda even said that he drew his katanas on the wrong side for that arc. Not counting the Jump cover, his action of sheathing his katana in that chapter makes no sense since his sheaths are on his right side. You can see how the page before, he has his left hand on the katana to sheath his sword and the next page, his right hand is on the katana sheathing his sword on the side he doesn't have his katanas. Doesn't matter really, I just found it odd.
-
It's not like little mistakes haven't happened before. The scar on Shanks' flag and Croc having two hands in the BW coverstory are good examples of this.
-
@_Meh_:
Croc having two hands in the BW coverstory
I remember doing a double take on this one
