- I'm surprised at the level of language used. We've got damns, jackasses, dumbasses, bitchs, hells, screws etc etc. It's refreshing, because we have characters here that are pirates and leads who, at the moment, are all in their late teens. This sort of language only makes sense. Props to Funi. (Can't wait to hear unedited Sanji!)

Same thing for Zoro's sword in mouth speaking. Nice touch.

Props to Funi (and our man Mato and the writers) for sticking to the original script and still having the leeway to let everything flow naturally.

Props to the decision to not have the Strawhat actors voice other characters.

I'm pretty sure that there wasn't so so much cursing in the original. It is a kids comic and cartoon after all. They probably threw in so much cursing to make it more "uncut" and "adult".

Many translators are either teenagers or teenagers at heart, and have a love for strong language. They'll often fill up as many scenes as possible with curse words even if they don't make sense.

I can't be the only one who thinks words such as "fucktard" and other modern day slang terms seem out of place in a series that took place before the 1700s.

Well, from what I understand of Japanese, the words that are used (kuso etc) are mostly contextual. If someone just tried to kill your best friend and your screaming at them, the implied meaning isn't going to be 'darn you!.'

There is apparently downright R/X rated swearing in japan which is pretty much very nasty street slang, but that never makes it to TV.

That being said, perception here is subjective. I have to wonder if Japanese kids watching the show are hearing the words and thinking of them as the 'darn' and 'crap' meanings while teens hear them and think 'damn' and 'shit'.

The language in the One Piece dub is tame to the point where I don't consider it bad. In movie terms, it's PG. The language in One Piece is emphatic and cathartic, not idiomatic. Meaning, it's there for emphasis, not for the hell of it. (Then again, I have a unique perspective on this being 27 and having a communications degree.)

The reason there wasn't any cursing is because the Japanese language doesn't have a list of "set curses".

But if they did, who knows?
After all it's got gallons of blood, violence, and partial nudity; so if their language actually had a set list, maybe they would have used them.

EDIT: Accidently hit post, what I meant was you can't always be super literal. One Piece has no need for such vulgarity because there's more 'mature' ways of expressing emotion that fit better then so.

I just watched ishtar's clip of Zoro defeating Morgan, but it didn't feature "that" line. The line that got me hooked on One Piece. So now I got to know, what does Zoro say to Luffy after Morgan falls? How is it exactly?

The first time Zoro acknowledges Luffy as his captain. I believe it was as this in the 4Kids dub.

Sweet! Carrie's using her Haruka voice from Rumbling Hearts which I thought would fit the character of Kaya perfectly. Good directing on that part!

Everything else is excellant too! FUNimation really has made this a watchable and enjoyable show in English! Can't wait til I get the boxset myself!

I know all these clips seem a bit unesscesary Buuhan, but if they like what they see then of course they need to preorder or buy the box set, thats why in every clip I post I make sure to tell them that, because I don't want people to get free episodes by other people, they need to get their own copy, but I know eventually there will be some people who upload whole episodes, and we can't stop that all we can do is flag them. So get the DVD when it comes out but in the mean time enjoy the new clips that are out xD. I actually don't think Kuro's voice sucks horribly anymore. His conversation with Jango (I watched on Youtube) sounded great.
So, even though I still prefer his 4Kids voice, this new Funi one is actually good too. >_>

I'm saving ALL for my DVD release. I didn't even watch the Opening and Ending, all I've seen was the episode 3 preview and the episode 14 preview and those only included the Straw Hats voices. That's all I'm gonna see till I get my set, also.

Which may not be for a long long time due to the fact I only got $60 left and I still got several POPs to get…

Japan has curses just like any other language. It's only a myth that they don't. There are words that are prohibitted on television or at very least at certain hours on television. This isn't much different from Canada where 'fuck' can even be used without flinching depending on what time the show airs.

Just because curse words are used frequently or even mimicked by children, it doesn't make them any different from the words we use.

For example, 'kusottare' is commonly translated as 'asshole', well it actually means, 'you're a piece of shit dangling from an ass'. It's just as nasty and children are not supposed to use it…..but they do.

Then there are words that are considered discriminatory that they cannot use on television. For example, 'noutarin'. Literally meaning 'lacking brains'. That used to be a term used to describe Winnie the Pooh but they can't say it anymore.

Furthermore, terms for male and female anatomy may also be bleeped or partially bleeped out depending on when they air.

The idea that curses don't exist in Japanese is a myth.
