Showing Kyoraku's and Ukitake's bankais has nothing to do with "developing their characters" anyway. All the senior captains' fighting is being saved for the winter war I believe.

If this IS the Winter War, then we're gonna be seeing them sooner then later. I wish we could get some kind of confirmation that this is invasion is taking the Winter War's place. Honestly, I think we'll have Yamamoto, Shunsui and Ukitake in the next chapter. Something big has to happen chapter 300, and the head honchos of SS showing up would take the cake.
edit : Shunsui controls wind, and Ukitake controls thunder with one blade, and water with the other. Even if it was only in a video game, Kaien's release was in a video game and was put in the manga. Plus, their release calls both relate to wind and water/thunder respectively.

I personally don't think Soul Society is making their move, but you're right; I do think we need some kind of confirmation on whether it is or isn't the war.

Yep, there's two more filler episodes yet and then back to canon.
Ashido is a lame filler villain/anti-hero. I don't see how the anime writers can make him seem good in this mini-arc, and I doubt they will.

Okay, let's say that Soul Society cleans up the remaining Espada and then peace out. That leaves Old Guy, Grimmjow, Halibel, Yammi, Ulquiorra, Stark, Wonderweiss, and the three former Soul Society captains leading a huge number of hollows into the Winter War.
How in the hell is Aizen going to get stronger men? The Hogyoku is supposed to weaken after continual use. That's why Orihime's there in the first place, to fix the bloody thing. I mean, they're facing overwhelming odds as is (Soul Society, Karakura Town (Urahara and co.), and Vizards v. Espada). It's going to be really interesting to see how Kubo plays out the end of the Las Noches arc and how he evens up the playing field.
I can see either one (or more) of the invading Soul Society captains getting offed or we're about to see Orihime get 'napped soon (Ulquiorra?) in order to serve her purpose for the Bad Guys.
Well, the Hoguyoku is getting weaker because Aizen has to force it to make it work. When it does get time to the Winter War, it should have awoken, so he wouldn't have that problem anymore.
And he can get "stronger men" by just getting more Vasto Lorde, I guess. But the way things are, if no one dies in any of the fights, then there'd only be 1-2 spots open, so there's Wonderweiss and possibly Luppi back.

Luppi was pretty dumb. I'm still not 100% sure he/she was guy. His/Her tentacle rape powers were pretty unsatisfying as well. I'm sure I'm not the only one that laughed their ass off when Grimmjow blasted him to smithereens.

And his powers were is a bit lame, but I think if Hitsugaya used his ice in a similar way in the fight, it could be made to be interesting.

Mostly, I want Hitsugaya to be "inside" the tentacles' dome of defense, make Luppi realize the obvious flaw in his power, and have Hitsugaya just cut him open so he can die slowly and painfully.

Luppi was easily the worst of all the Arrancar, which is really saying something considering how these characters turned out.
