I finished Akagi a couple nights ago. Gotta warn you about the show's second half. It's loooong.
However, episode 25 is absolutely hilarious. My favorite episode of Akagi. :D

DEAL IT DEAL IT DEAL IT, C'MON DEAL IT.
Yeah. That episode rules.
-
I'm not quite that far, but so far my favorite moment was when Akagi revealed he had a Haku pair and beat Ichikawa. And Ichikawa goes ballistic because Akagi dealt the third Haku in order to bait him, making him cheat and switch the tiles.
The scene with Urabe after he lost was pretty awesome too. Though I love when the punks tried to beat up Akagi right before the Ichikawa match.

Let's not forget Ron! Ron! Ron! Ron! Ron! RonRonRonRon~~~~~~~~~~!!!!
The look on Washizu's face after he was head bumped was priceless. I laughed out loud at that scene. -
i love how
! he starts acting like a kindergarden kid and start throwing tiles at that cop XD
-
If you guys haven't seen them, these are the last three manga volume covers and they're awesome

do you know how to play mahjong more than juste the rules explained in the anime? i really would like to know if it's way more awesome if you know how it really works.
-
Don't bother to learn it, that shit is HARD. I got some of the rules out of learning programs but after 2-3 days it just became too complicated.
On another note, about Akagi, I shall quote a sentence that best displays how awesome that fucker is:
The greatest thing about Akagi is that he knows now what tile is going to play in the sixth turn of the east round of the 6th HanChan in a future game two years from now -

Honestly, even with the anime's very helpful explanations I've been pretty lost. I kind of learned one or two things, but yeah.
I'd like to try to learn the game someday, but it honestly looks like it'd be beyond me. I don't think I could ever learn all of those hands.

If it is any consolation, you could try playing the game on this site. Registration is free and as long as you stick to the free tables, you won't lose your shirt.

Episode 3
! After being back stabbed once more, Kaiji's insane plan and gamble paid off, as he once more has 3 stars and no cards. However, he still seems intent on getting the other two guys their stars back as well. Kaiji is way too damn trusting and helpful in a situation like this. I would have left the fat guy to die after the crap he pulled at the beginning of the episode. Either way, episode 4 can't come soon enough.
-
I "finished" (LOL) Akagi yesterday, so I might start on this later this week.
-
i watched ep 3 with a friend of mine who is not into anime at all. while i really enjoyed the ep (so did he i think) he said that now he could peacefully die and say he watched an anime about rock papper scissors… that sounded lame when he said it...
anyway, i can't tolerate that big fat asshole, can't he just die, dammit???!!!
-
Watched Ep. 3 yesterday, it was TOO GOOD, Andou was such an ass, but Kaiji set him staright, what REALLY bugs me know is…how is he going to get at least 4 stars for Furuhata & Andou? ...or will he?
This shit just keeps getting better and better. -
@Cap'n:

That was a disappointing ending. However, it's not the studio's fault as Fukumoto is still not finished with the manga. The manga still hasn't finished the Washizu match. Hopefully we may get another season to finish the arc.
@igalsfy:anyway, i can't tolerate that big fat asshole, can't he just die, dammit???!!!
Your friend is a big fat asshole who needs to die?:wassat:
-
Yeah, I was less disappointed when I found out that Akagi is still running (holy shit). But still; I'd say "why make a 26 episode series on something that hasn't ended," but it was an awesome ride.
-
I hope Kaiji just ditches the two losers next episode.
And honestly, is everyone in this show a moron? I understand the logic they used, but the guy he took the stars from should have realized that something was off about using three scissor cards in a row.
-
It would've made a bit more sense if the guy used his own scissor cards to test Kaiji out. However, he still chose to play the paper. I guess the opponent was too drunk with denial to figure it out.
However, this is exactly why I'm liking the series right now. The way this show dissects the psychological factors related to gambling and gambling addiction is amazing. Very entertaining episode.
Episode 4 should've aired in japan by now. However, we won't see Triad's sub for it till the weekend. :(
-
@Kaba:

And apparently the episode title is 'Failure'. Oh yeah, I definitely can wait to find out why that is. It definitely doesn't blow that we have to wait.
-
^That sucks, if only there was another group subbing the series as well :/
Speaking of which, am I the only one unable to find Kaiji on Youtube or Dailymotion? Or have they already deleted the uploaded eps. twice? -
@Kaba:
Your friend is a big fat asshole who needs to die?:wassat:
lol the confusion was on purpose.
i'm talking about that 3rd dude in kaiji's team who fuckin' blowed up his star and a card just because he suxors. (yeah, that's spoilers)
-
Ep. 4 is subbed, you slacky dimwits-
! Man this is about THE ONLY anime right now that I am FREAKING excited about what happens in the next ep.! Talk about 'two can play that game'.
-
I've seen some fanart of Kaiji (in b4 wow you faggot), and they've honestly got me worried about what happens to him D:
I've never been so emotionally invested in a character so quickly
-
Bad stuff. Lots of bad stuff.
-
Episode 5
! Telling someone to kill themselves after head butting them? HELL YEAH! This is actually getting much better than I thought it would be. After the Bathroom of Losers scene, I was hooked and wait anxiously for Triad to get done with the subs. From what I read (Not the manga), he has quite a bit of…mishaps happen to him. It feels ALOT more real than Akagi. Though, there is some QUALITY thrown in here and there. Oh well.
-
Finally got episode 4.
! Haha wow. Talk about your monster backfires. Kaiji's pool of horrible luck continues to fill as the worst possible scenario plays out. Someone caught on to his plan, and they pay the price. Andou and Furuhara continue to be useless dead weight. I am almost 100% positive they will eventually backstab Kaiji completely, once they have their foot on the ground. I'm almost tempted to break down and watch the ep 5 raw at this point, but I will have patience.
-
I really like the art style for this series and Akagi, and given that the premise is just too ridiculous to pass up I thought I'd check it out.
But should I read the manga or watch the anime?
-

Go ahead, read the manga if you can find a scanlation. There are 4 chapters of Akagi and 1 chapter of a series that's not animated yet, about some kid with great martial arts talent.
Ep 5 finished now, attempting to watch.
-
Fast subs this time!
Episode 5
! Kaiji has a career ahead of him as a motivational speaker. That, and he was really good at egging on Kitami. Also, It was nice to hear Kazuki Yao taking on the role of Kitami. Once more Kaiji shows us that he is much smarter than we take him for, being able to tell what the last card that Kitami had was. Now their plan has taken a different turn, opting to buy out some papers. I sure hope they aren't left with too many cards leftover at the end of the time.
-
^DLing it as I type, but I gotta wait 3 more hours >_<.
-
It was pretty neat. I'm guessing that with this plan they can succeed, with only a little struggling here and there, but definitely not as much as the hell Kitami gave them or any more cries. Dammit, we've been through enough stress, it's time for some FLAWLESS VICTORY material.
But, I still can't get along their conversations.
Kaiji: saying stuff with no reasoning "X"
Fat idiot and other guy: "E-.. x?"
Kaiji: explaining X even though a falling piece of shit will be able to understand from sentence 1
It happened in so many animu dialogues [OP included] I'm just sick of it. But eh, it's worth it for the rest of what the series has. -
hahaha /a/ is torn between "OH GOD NAKED KAIJI fapfapfap" and "ANDOOOOOOOUUUU"
and then there are trolls who are all "Andou is GAR, Kaiji is a naked crying faggot"
):
-
^lol, man seriously couldn't he just let it end as Ando & Furu saving Kaiji and then they all have to do something to pay back the interest? Seriously…
-
OMFG!!! Kaiji's been neutered! O_O
-
$50 says we get an Ando flashback of why he is such an ass.
-
@Freeman-12:
$50 says we get an Ando flashback of why he is such an ass.
! Eh, from what I read, he just gets his ass kicked by Kaiji.
-
^$50 for you for that nice info. BTW where'd u read that info? Did u figure it out from the manga?
-
Raw manga, sir. It isn't translated or I haven't given to the time to actually look for it.
-
now i want andou to get raped by every dude in the naked room.
anyway, the development of andou and the other guy is completely crappy in this show. and kaiji sucks, too. andou tried to fuck them up on the very beginning when they gave him cards. why didn't he just let him go alone? the other guy was enough, even if completely annoying, too!
-
! The buying of Paper would have been for naught since everyone would have saw those two people buying it. Dividing the work (in some ungodly way) was a way to avoid being noticed. Everyone noticed later was like, "WHAT THE!?!?! HE HAD ALL THE CARDS?!" It was his only way to survive after a certain point and he required some more components. In the end, he had no true need and Kaiji wanted believe in the friendship of the surviving. Ended up screwing him over.
! ANNNNNNNNNNDOOOOOOOOU -

The theme of Kaiji is that everyone's a bastard to some extent except Kaiji himself, but in spite of Kaiji getting stepped on by people he tries to help he still survives his ordeals.
Remember, saying "Kaiji shouldn't have done this or that" glaces over the issue of Kaiji not knowing what to do in the beginning. At the time, recruiting Furuhata and Andou was a good idea - as opposed to Kaiji relying on Funai, they were relying on him, so he had the advantage of being able to turn them into lackeys. He needed their stars, their cards, and support - it wasn't a wasted effort by the end of the game.
His error was he got too comfortable with them (as in, started to view them as "friends", or that psychological condition of people in traumatic events who get close to each other as a result) and neglected to account for the "stupid people only think in the short term" mind-set of Andou.
-
Ep. 9 was epic, I wonder if it's OK to have a
! Sig of Kaiji kicking that nude guy's ass in the forums
-
Oh god. Episode 9 was well worth the wait. I just wonder what's gonna happen next.. Anyone know what the next game is?
-
Terek watches eleven.
His roof starts to make noises.
Terek looks up.
Suddenly.
Bricks!
THOUSANDS of them!!
-
damn that Sahara is sly, giving his number to Kaiji like that
also a WOMAN IN A FUKUMOTO SERIES whoa (loling at the real people on the nudie mags too)
I can't help but imagine Akagi in the Human Derby. Except he throws all the other competitors onto the crowd and has the survivors build a human bridge he can safely cross.
-
^Yeah lol, I too was WTF at seeing a female XD.
-
Ep. 11 was a true vision of our world's dark side….
...but I wonder if IT'S A TRAP?! -
Sigh, Episode 12 finally out…saw it coming.
