Looks fun times.
-
I'm still waiting for a release date or something for Rebirth PSP but it seems like they're in full-on promotion mode for Tales of Innocence right now.
In other news, I finally beat Tales of Phantasia PSP and am now working on Tales of Eternia PSP.
So, for now my completed list is:Phantasia (PSP)
Destiny (PS1)
Symphonia (GC)
Legendia (PS2)
Tempest (DS) -

Looks fun times.
ZOMG, LLOYD IS SEPHIROTH.
Looks prett neat. Familiar locales with better quality graphics are nice, and the battle system looks nice and smooth.
-
They used Symphonia Battle Music for the trailer XD;. I guess that makes sense, but I hope that there's at least SOME new music for the game besides new character themes.
It's also rather nice to see places like Iselia and Izlood again. They even have monsters that are the same XD.
Perhaps Lloyd is having a flashback of Iselia?

Oh and ToI battle trailer:
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/26038.html -
Out of those, Symphonia was the best. I can barely remember Destiny because that was like 10 years ago, Phantasia and Legendia had crappy battle systems and Tempest was just a bad game all-around.
I think the best ones are probably the ones I haven't beaten yet. Eternia is pretty nice and plays really well on the PSP, and next in my line are Destiny 2 and Abyss, which both seem to be really polished like Symphonia was. Also, I hear that Rebirth is a favorite of a lot of people so I'm itching to get that when it comes out on PSP.
-
Yeah, I've heard great stuff about Abyss and Rebirth.
Anyway, for those who wanted a better version of the ToS:KoR trailer you can watch it here:
-
After taking a closer look at that trailer, and without any other releases of information about the game itself to contradict my suspicion yet, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that Knights of Ratatosk is more of a spin-off than a full-fledged "epic" adventure. I think it will be more like Radiant Mythology or those Narikiri games for GB/GBA, maybe not with random dungeons since they have the Symphonia world designs already made for them, but more in the "take quests, fulfill them, get more quests" vein than the serious "view cutscenes, get new character, run across world map, etc." type ala Symphonia or Destiny or Eternia.
We'll see.
-
stephen: Just don't get to annoyed at Rebirth. If you think that the racism storyline is always apparent in Tales of Series games (not saying it isn't, cause it is XD), Rebirth has the most heavily influenced 'racism is bad' storyline. And the main protaganist can seem like a total emo prick.
But other than that, I've heard great things about it XD. I can also speak for Abyss. In fact, unless you really think hard on it, there's not much 'racism' at all in the story until much later, and even then it's very subtle.
Yes, the constant talk of averting war can drag on after awhile, but the story makes up for it. Be warned though, the beginning is kind of slow and you'll more than likely DESPISE the main character at first. In fact, you'll probably hate him for half the game XD.
But your mage can actually fend for himself and solo in battle quite well. The same can be said for your main healer. Both have very decent physical attack/defense stats considering they use primarily magic.
Your secondary swordsman in the game is a favorite for combo whores as well XD. You secondary mage is a hybrid mage/tank. Think Presea with magic skills. Some people like her, some people don't. I personally love having her in my party for her spells (She learns spells your primary mage doesn't). Get her to high levels and have her in the party with the primary mage. Damage is very high XD.
The main character is a decent start, like any basic swordsman character. However, you need to equip a special gem called a FSC (which you don't get until a little over a quarter of the way through the game) in order for him to better a previously learned move to heal himself. Your secondary swordsman, you ask? He learns one almost right off the bat. Spam it and you can refill his HP in almost no time. VERY useful for solo/colisseum battles.
And your secondary healer is…more focused on the individual healing than healing the group as a whole. Can be useful in harder optional boss battle when she's paired up with your main healer. I use her somewhat often, but I usually keep the main healer in my party.
I hope my long windedness proved useful/interesting to you XD.

Oh, I already know that it's a given to expect these things from any game in the series. But it's the gameplay system I enjoy Tales for, not the stories or characters.
-
Oh, I already know that it's a given to expect these things from any game in the series. But it's the gameplay system I enjoy Tales for, not the stories or characters.
In my opinion, Tales of the Abyss has some of the nicest character designs out there, easily the best in the series. Luke's nothing special, but he develops a lot as the story progresses, Guy's a nice character, but a bit boring. Jade and Dist are the two most awesome things in Abyss, because of how silly Dist is and how mush of a smartass badass Jade is. The rest are interesting as well, and major villains develop a lot as the series progresses as well. Even lame people like Sync get time to themselves.
Now you can enjoy the character designs as well as the gameplay.
-
Hey a Tales thread! I need to contribute.
Jawdropped from discovering Phantasia. Confused at first by the battle system but adapted very quickly to enjoy it.
Next came Symphonia which I had a lot of fun with. Replayability is great. Legendia was alright. I haven't completed all of the extra stuff after the end though. Abyss was amazing. Love it, own it.
I'd really like to be able to play the Destiny series. Leon is a character I want to know more of.
-
From the looks of it, Soul Calibur Legends is an adventure title rather than a fighting game. Dammit! Where's my Tales fighting game actually made by Namco? I wanna kick some ass with Cless!
But enough of my ranting. Lloyd looks almost badass.
-
Duhhhhhhhhhhh whut
-
I'm more interested in the big guy on the opposite page
-
i played the tale games…abyss, symphonia were awesome...legendia was...ok i guess...
but i have to say...legendia has some interesting weapons...
u dont get many games where u can use a stick that blows normal bubbles to be able to kill a BEAR MONSTER THING...or attacking it with a freak'n VASE or even a goddamn pen... -
Lloyd is looking kind of scary.
I've played.. ToS, ToP, ToL, and ToTA. I like ToS the best all around, I guess. I need to complete ToTA though. ToL is my second favorite mainly because the music is awesome and I like the characters.
-
@raj:
Apparantly Lloyd from Symphonia is going to be in Soul Calibur Legends. Oh Namco!
Dude, that's awesome!!
Yeah, in case you didn't know already, I loved ToS. -
Totally did not see this coming.
-
Wait…what? Lloyd looks alright. A bit creepy in my opinion, but I'll probably get used to it.
What platform is SC: Legends going to be released on?
-
yea, Lloyd looks like a huge fruitcake in that scan.
-
@Bee's:
What platform is SC: Legends going to be released on?
Wii.
Yeah, it just seems like an odd decision on Namco's part and just looks wrong. I mean, unless Symphonia was a bigger hit in the US then I originally thought then I can see why he was put in. But still.
-
You'd think Cless would be put in, seeing as how he's the original Tales of Series hero. And it's coming out in Japan first correct? Last time I checked, Abyss actually outsold Symphonia in Japan. I'm pretty sure Symphonia outsold Abyss here, but still :p.
-
You would think so. But I'm guessing that Namco really wants to build on Symphonia what with the OVA, sequel, and now this. Besides if Symphonia's stateside success is playing any role then compared with something like Phantasia's abysmal GBA port it makes sense why they'd prefer Lloyd over him. Though now that I think about it I really wish that Namco and Nintendo would work something out so we could get a Wii port of Phantasia PSP stateside on Wiiware or even as a budget priced game. Oh well, and here are some better looking scans.
-
He looks like he's out of a Final Fantasy game now xD. And I hope you can get other swords for him. Those rapiers just look…dorky.
-

@raj:
Apparantly Lloyd from Symphonia is going to be in Soul Calibur Legends. Oh Namco!
Now with more realistic looking Lloyd
http://img157.imagevenue.com/loc686/th_98917_viploader494215_122_686lo.jpg…Why is Lloyd using rapiers? Only a few weapons in ToS were rapiers...
Oh well, I guess it is pretty neat, considering I love ToS and I'm looking forward to Soul Calibur Legends and the ToS sequel.
-
I think Lloyd makes a lot more sense than Cless. They're basically the same character (most of the Tales protagonists are), but Lloyd was in a more recent and quite visible game that probably every RPG fan with a Gamecube played, and he has two swords. Isn't Soul Caliber all about the weapons, anyway?
-
More and more details are surfacing about the gameplay elements of Tales of Innocence (DS), and my interest is starting to rise because I like what I see.
-
Apparently you can customize your characters freely by assigning them to different fighting strategies like front row "advance" physical combat, back row "wisdom" spell combat, and "guardian" protective combat. You gain ranks in each of these by using them, and these will in turn provide you with stat bonuses depending on what type you're using.
-
You can customize equipment by taking them to a blacksmith and giving him elemental items, thus improving and adding attributes to the weapons.
-
There's some sort of side-quest random dungeon system that you can undertake to get experience, money, grade, etc. which is tied into a ranked guild system.
-
You can customize your party members' battle priorities in a numbered list
that places precedence on the higher numbers. Sounds like a softer version of the gambits from FF12.
I never thought I'd say this after the travesty that was Tales of the Tempest, but this game is actually looking pretty fun!
-
-
My fucking PSP memory stick corrupted! Goodbye Phantasia clear data, 80 hrs of Eternia and 50 hrs of Radiant Mythology!
Fuck you, memory stick!
-
Lloyd will be in Legends?!
…I'm suddenly a lot more interested. XD
Anyway, as for the actual Tales series, I've only played ToS and ToP. I beaten ToS five times I think and I am currently on my sixth playthrough. And I've forgotten what I'm doing in ToP. I haven't played it in a while, and I'm not very far into it.
I plan on getting Abyss eventually. If I get a PSP, I may get Radiant Mythology. I'll also definitely get the ToS sequel.

Tales of Innocence review.
- Polygon graphics came out really well.
- Can get drawn into the story
- Portions are a bit hard for newcomers to the series to understand
- Character customization is relatively free, and the breadth is enjoyable
- The characters themselves, whether enemy or ally, are enjoyable and make a big impact
- Battle gives you greater freedom of movement than before
- Lots of systems that can draw the player in is a good point
- May have been better with a bit more detailed explanations

All from neogafOooh, shiny pics…
Nice that they've gone all out on the characters, though I doubt I'll enjoy any of them as much as I enjoyed Dist and Jade... I really hope this gets translated.
-
Even if it doesn't get translated, you can still buy it and probably find a step by step guide that has a translation online.
That's why it's totally awesome that the DS is region free.
-
I'm pretty optimistic about a possible English release of this game, as we did get that garbage Radiant Mythology awhile back, and DSes are basically selling like funnel cakes over here.
But yeah, I like the Tales games a whole lot. The only ones I've finished are Phantasia, Eternia, Symphonia, Legendia, and Abyss, but every day I'm hoping that they release the Destiny remake or Rebirth PSP port over here. Le sigh, this is one series that it really helps to know Japanese for.
And one more thing! The translation project for PS1 Tales of Phantasia is almost done! I'm stoked.
-
Innocence is on its way into my hands!
-
Innocence is on its way into my hands!
Definitely tell us how that one turns out. Innocence and the Director's Cut of the Destiny PS2 remake are #1 and #2 on my list of JP Tales games that I want over here and in English.
-
Thanks for bumping this… ETA for my copy and DQ IV DS is about 8 hrs!
-
Got it and played for about two hours.
The look of the game is, unsurprisingly, roughly the same as Tempest; handhelds being technologically inferior to consoles, there's not a whole lot more you can expect them to squeeze out of the DS processor. That being said, I think it runs smoother and the art design is certainly better.
But the meat and potatoes is totally different. Even though they tried to pass off Tales of the Tempest as a "fully-fledged" installment of the series, it had barely any of the elements that make a Tales game. Not so with Innocence, it's just packed with all sorts of various gameplay systems. You have your class-like "styles" with equippable /unlockable skills, your standard quick button skills will gain levels, you can modify/upgrade weapons, you can cook food, you can do guild quests/dungeons, you r characters have friendship levels that increase through skits and battle combo/healing, not to mention a library full of story summaries, monster/item lists, battle high scores,
and even a percentage on the amount of story skits you've seen.Basically, even though it's on a handheld, it feels like they did everything they could to push it further beyond what you've been able to do in the previous games. I'm liking it a lot so far.

Tell us if there's a cameo battle against former Tales Heroes. That's what I'm most anticipating, honestly.
-
I've seen people asking about that, but I haven't seen an affirmative response yet. It just came out, so probably anyone who's beaten the game at this point hasn't really gone through everything you can do anyway.
-
The cameo battles are always entertaining. My favorite's still got to be the Cless+Arche one in Eternia, though.
-
Sounds awesome stephen. Keep us updated, especially if the game is able to keep the momentum.
-
This really does sound promising :D. Hopefully, this bodes well for a possible Stateside release.
Take your time with it, and maybe you'll find out something not a lot of people have found out about the game yet.
Like if there's a cameo battle xD.
-
I just asked around the namco tales forums, and apparently there isn't a cameo battle :(.

Darn.
Oh well, keep us updated on what's good and stuff. Hopefully it'll keep the tradition of awesome over-the-top plot twists.
