However cool or not that might be, having Smoker on the crew would over-power the mugiwara too much. Think about it, an untouchable logia whose only weaknesses are wind and the ocean/seastone on the crew would mean that if the enemy does not have a logia or some seastone, they are as good as owned. I for one would hate it if therefore every other arc boss turned out to be a logia. But thats just me…

After reading Wanted! I think they may get a Monk to join. Alot of the characteristics from characters seem to have been incorporated in some way into the One Piece crew (gunslinger/sniper, master pickpocket, swordsmen, and Luffy) though this is just speculation of course but I'm putting it out there, I assume his dream would be Enlightenment though who knows

Smoker's not invincible… the fact that he couldn't defeat Crocodile himself and that when caught off guard he can still be struck. For example, he's got a scar on his chest now, and considering it's on his chest and not on his back or side, that's a good indication he can still be hit.
The only Logia we've seen so far that's truly broken is Kuzan's. Everyone else had their weakness.

I'm for smoke joining, there are big chance from my point of view… Blackgalleon sorry I can't understand how smoke would make the crew too much powerfull.. Logias are becoming (relatively) quite common and they are not like untouchable guys they have their weakness...

Here is a little list of actual jobs a pirate crew bothers with,after looking at what is taken, what will never happen and what is to menial we can atleast figure what is the most likley position thsi new member would hold.
Captain- usually old navy sailors. They took care of navagation, a decent fighter (for morale really) and posses some leadership qualities.
First mate- Just the go to guy for your captain some had em some didn't
Quarter Master- Takescare of finances, has a say in what the crew does, and ususally takes the role of negotioator.
Boatswain- There would be a few of these depending on ship size, they make sure shit gets done and your blood thirsty bunch of jerks where happy blood thirsty jerks.
Gunner- Lead men in an artillery fight (boats usually) they are acomplished marksmen as well.
Carpenter- They are the most among the most respected of the crew, they make sure your wooden home does not sink or leak.
Sailing master- Many where forced into pirate service for their skills (nami refrence?) although your captain could get you to land these guys where the pros and they set the course.
Helmsman- Steers the tiller, many of these aboard at once since they take two hour intervals. They answer to the navagator and quarter master.
Sail maker- When you make it big and your ship is big you have some of these guys around.
Surgeons and cooks- Both are basically allowed to live on the ship because they are to maimed to fight. Although skilled surgeons would be nice for amputations and treatments of STD's (saucy pirates,har har har) desperate measure would make the cook or carpenter good substitutes.
Cooper- when your rich you can afford to hire a barrel maker, this keeps your shit from getting devoured my rodents and full of salt water.
Musicians- Usually taken hostage after a raid they raise moral and stay alive by playing music.
Powder monkeys- Basically low-skilled young folk who are doomed to a life of dangeorus and back breaking labor..sad but then again it could be worse, they can work at burger king.
Jobs found by googling lots of stuff. The only good job left seems to be helmsman (something that can be played up plenty in a fantasy manga) the rest seem..not fun. So yeah helmsman or made up job is my guess. A fishwoman preferably. Just a thought but could there be a difference between mer-people and fish people? I don't really get why arlong would be blue and sharky while all females are literally half fish.

And for other things, I think the martial artist or variations thereof is already covered by Sanji (That's why he's been fighting Kenpo users everytime, IMHO)

I agree with Smoker might be trying to work along with the SHs to calm down whatever in the world happens, for the sake of fighting Luffy, but anything beyond that is ridiculous.
About the jobs, I'm way too limited to think of any to fit characters in need now at the moment. All I need is just 2 chapters after TB ends and we can all let loose of theories :o

I actually thought about Smoker joining the Straw Hats too way back when I first read the Louge Town chapters. It'd be an interesting move on Oda's part.
Maybe he finds out about what happened in Ohara and the Void Century and decides that the World Government's brand of justice does not suit his own and joins the Straw Hats so he can be free to pursue his own justice.
Although, that would probably also involve Tashigi joining too, which would complicate things.
Meh, probably won't happen.

On second thought, Maybe the idea of Smoker joining is just an exciting fantasy of us.
Another thing that may foil this idea is that he looks like Zoro (and the fact that he also get a scar across the chest just supplement on the similarity)! Come on, place them side by side and you get a picture of loving (laid back) brothers, if you ask me! And with Oda's habit of making each strawhat different with another, It seems unlikely that Zoro and Smoker be in the same ship IMHO.I have to agree with Rai about him just being a background strawhat supporter. Though, I still hope that he get better role… really like the guy.

Wait a second, I know exactly how this can all work out.
Smoker betrays the navy for some reason that will be explained when it happens, and after severaly failed attempts to kill him, they put a bounty on his head and send a shickibukai after him, (Possibly Jinbei or Kuma) Luffy and company arrive on Gyojin island and see the bounty poster. Luffy then saves Smoker from said shickibukai and Smaker says something along the lines of I owe you a debt of gratitude. and so Luffy says, Then become my Nakama!
Smoker says…..oh fine.....jerk....>< and then he settles in as part of the crew. And as the crew has thier festivities, a subtle smile crreps across his face. and he has found where he belongs.....ok that last part was a bit....odd, but most of fits! -

Usopp's already very artistic - he's the one who drew their Jolly Roger (based on Luffy's "first draft"). I don't know if they'd need another artist.

Brook can run on water, you don't need much more from a scout on a pirateship.
Unless you mean lookout, which is Ussop's secondary function, given he is the sniper.
