To be honest, I wouldn't be upset if Blum didn't touch One Piece.

Considering he's doing them there fancy dancy American shows now (Ben 10) he might wind up being too big budget for Anime. :p

Steve Blum, if anything, could work as Franky.

No thanks, I much prefer Chris Rager.
I just can't picture Blum as Franky.

So much for the separate VA thread :P

Let's move this conversation TO that thread. Here's my response.
For everyone else, staying on the actual topic might be good. On the subject of attack names, I mentioned before that Brina got called back to do some "pick-up" lines (which are when recordings need to be done over for various reasons) for Chopper when asked about attack names at Otakon. My assumption is that some are correct, some aren't. CD pointed out that they'll be in the same case as the names, but some of the Viz names cause some confusion for them.
Example, Mr. 5's signature attack: "Nose Fancy Cannon" (Japanese), "Bomb Boogey" (4Kids Dub) and then "Nez-palm Cannon" (Manga).
For cases like that, I'm sure they got trouble on there hands. Bevins mentioned "Gum Gum Kick", Whip and Stamp fit those descriptions, but those attacks have been named correctly in everything, if I'm not mistaken. I'm assuming that's somewhere in the Jaya or Skypeia arcs, anyone remember what instance in those episodes he uses such an attack?
-
It's possible that he just forgot the real name or something, that happens to me sometimes when I'm talking casually about stuff (not necessarily OP). I don't see any Gum Gum Kick here either, so I'm guessing that's the case.

The New VA's for the Straw Hat look (and from the one we've heard) and sound awesome! Can't Wait!

Steve Blum, if anything, could work as Franky.
Still, I hope not. I really dun wanna see him do anything in One Piece.

Ah, good point (although Colleen was also reffering to it by that name). Was there any attack that comes to mind that fits that "profile" near the beginning? It's been a while since I've seen ALL of Jaya (this is open to other people too).
-
Figured he forgot. Considering all the crazy attack names Luffy's got. I hope their scripts don't wind up having errors!!!
EDIT: Sorry about the VA speaking. I hadn't even noticed!!!
-
I hope Blum isn't in it either. Same goes for Wendee Lee. God was I pissed when she got Yoruichi. I use to be big fans of both of them, but they are just in too many things now and it's always the same voice.
How many purple haired hot characters has Lee voiced now? Faye, Lilika, Yoruichi…I swear, it's becoming a stereotype.
-
They're both in LA, it's not happening either way. T_T
Actually I thought it was funny when Bevins made direct reference to "THE LIST" as we've all come to fear from when Clyde first came to us. I'm assuming the dub script writers obviously have access to the list as well along with just the direct translations.
-
i actually really, i mean REALLY, like the rainbow mist arc
all it needs is a decent bad guy and it could rival some of the non-filler arcs IMO
but i'm a dr who fan, so anything time travel related gets a head start for me, and the peter pan references are cool too (i like when OP has references to other pirate related cultural texts
i'm still hoping for a return of the rainbow mist, along with some chrono trigger style questing (i don't read the manga, so please don't confirm if true)
-
It's been a long time since I did Jaya stuff so I can't remember if there's any Luffy kicking there. If so, it's probably something like Axe, Spear, or Whip or something.
And there's actually like a bunch different lists for different stuff now, so it's that much harder to keep track of what's what and what's to be used for what But yeah, everyone who's writing, translating, or directing probably has the lists close at hand.
-
Rainbow Mist IS airing on CN, if that's what you mean.
Same note, I was actually pretty surprised by how positive a response the audience gave when the director guest at AX said 99% of the time, he came up with the ideas for the filler arcs. I figured everyone in OP fandom hated them as much as Naruto and Bleach fans hate filler…
EDIT: Ah, cool thanks.
-
i think the OP fomat lends itself to filler better, as filler eps get their own island or whatever, anything quest-like means little stories are inevitable IMO. kinda like monkey, by anime standards that show is just solid filler save the 1st 3 eps, but it doesn't stop it being awesome. of course some of the OP filler is painful (like the goat stuff, which lasted way too long) but the rainbow mist saga is top notch IMO, the Davey back-fight was a bit drawn out i thought, but the end battle was worth i reckon
-
Well DBF is more canon filler, at least.
-
I actually enjoyed the Davy Back filler more then the "non filler" (with the excepetion of the Groggy Ring)

Well they don't have anonymity there do they? Seriously though most One Piece filler is much better than most people make it out. Most people spew their hate for it cause its just filler and people will think they're cool for hating it. Actually there is one scene in the Goat Arc that I really enjoyed. Nami getting her ass whooped in chess and then Robin covering for her. And then Nami went ONI-SAAN!^^ XD I half expected her to make out with Robin at that moment.

Golly, you sure are far!
Sure you can't tell us how far?
-
Right now I'm actually about to go back and make sure all the right changes got made in the DVD sub scripts. So many lists and changes throughout the past few months that we wanna make absolute sure everything is right. I'd hate to have a stray Zolo in there, for instance

Ah, you tease! You know I meant episode numbers!
But I understand, the contract, right?
By the way, The List is completely gone, right?
-
Easy enough:
Ctrl+F, do Find and Replace, enter Zolo and Zoro. Done in 8 seconds.
And then you can go on break ;)
-
@Yuugi's:

Not at all, it's still there. But I'm trying to see what changes have been approved, what approved changes have since been changed yet again, etc. It's complicated. At the moment I don't think there's anything to worry about for the subs though.
Gerchak: There's a lot more than just Zolo though Also, in some cases, changing stuff can change line length, and it'd suck if a change made a two-line sub turn into a three-line sub. Changing stuff can also introduce accidental typos and grammar mistakes too, so it's something that takes a scrutinizing eye.

Thank you for all your hard work, Mato!

Thank you for all your hard work, Mato!
I second that. Your awesomeness and dedication is second to none.
Although that Skull Kid idiot might disagree >_>
-
We all thank you Mato! After all you've done for ONE PIECE, I'm sure your name will be immortalized in these forums.
Are things going as smoothly as they could be? Or are there hang ups here and there, like the Zolo/Zoro spellchecking? I'm sure there are things you can't talk to us about, but I know from experience that it's always therapudic to bitch about problems with your friends. Group Therapy I think they call it.
…Crap. I'm sorry, I was sure I wouldn't have any stupid questions anymore, but I need this clarified by anyone; is it going to be ENEL or ENERU? Both have strong arguements for being accepted, but I'm honestly hoping for Enel.
-

Oh, I see. By the way, how is it you predict where a line will go from one line to two or two to three? Are you using the same font the FUNi subtitles team uses?

I think Eneru was confirmed a while back for both the dub and sub.
-
I think Eneru was confirmed a while back for both the dub and sub.
That's what I mean. This thread is so big now that we can't even confirm a confirmation.
I honestly hope it's not Eneru. Don't know why, but if I had to say my prime reason, it would probably be: "Enel sounds cooler to say".
-
Yeah, there's actually been a couple things I've wanted tell you guys but I can't, doh. Also been trying to avoid the internet to avoid HP spoilers but finally got that out of the way, whew.
Let's see, I'm pretty sure (like 99%) it's gonna stay Eneru. I'm not sure how it's going to be pronounced, it did sound pretty strange in that one game (Pirates Carnival, was it?) But you know how things are always changing so who knows. I didn't even know about how the TV dub would use the 4Kids names, for instance.
Things are going okay on my end of things, the ball's mostly in the dub guys' court now. Main thing is we're trying to see what exactly the final terms for the DVD subs should be. It's weird. But if I could explain what's going on, I wouldn't be confused right now
-
It probably has to be agreement with Viz and Toei. So Toei may want the Japanese names to be there for the subs for the original version. Or three sub tracks. One for the dub, one for translation of original (with dub name attacks), and one for translation of original (with original attack names). That would be awesome actually. Gives a good option for people. See if you can push for that.
-
Hey it's no prob. We don't wanna get you in trouble.
Yeah in Grand Adventure and Pirates Carnival they used the typical Americanized pronounciation with emphasis on the middle syllable, so it sounded like "An Air Roo". (Nuh Roo Doh syndrome, OH YAY.) I'm fine with Eneru personally. I think a lot of people are holding out for Enel simply from being used to it from the fansubs.
-
@LC:
Don't know why, but if I had to say my prime reason, it would probably be: "Enel sounds cooler to say".
It's also wrong, perhaps the most commonly mistaken romanization of any OP name. Frankly, I find it really odd that some complain about using the name pronounced in the anime, especially since some of those same folk are arguing in favour of "nakama"!
-
I preferred "Enel" becuase it's easier to say. It's alot easier to make pronounciation errors with a 3-syllable word than a 2-syllable (and, indeed, "Enel" just sounds kooler).
Although if it is wrong, then I guess they shouldn't use it. :/
Also: "Eneru" sounds like what that one Iron Chef guy would say on Futurama. "Ener-RUUUUUU!"
-
mato, yer the coolest person ever…....you need some kidna award.
and i am completely split between enel and eneru.....both sound perfectly fine for me. tho i think eneru would be cooler in the end........Shrugs
-
Dude, what's wrong WITH Mignona?
He's too happy and bouncy and in your face. I went to a panel with him on it and it's like seeing a living cartoon character on speed. People that happy all the time SCARE THE HELL OUTTA ME!
Plus, I'm not to crazy about his voice. His acting is okay, nothing legendary, but good enough. His voice just isn't a leading man's voice imho.I honestly hope it's not Eneru. Don't know why, but if I had to say my prime reason, it would probably be: "Enel sounds cooler to say".
Enel sounds like a phlem disease or something…ENer or Eneru is more accurate and just sounds better. Eneru is probably way easier to say in english though..
-
I personally think it is Enel. That is the way it was spelled in English in most of the Japanese games, and even though I know thats not a good source, it is something. Also, the biggest reason is that I think Enel is named after the electric power company after the same name in like Italy or something.
In addition, Eneru sounds like the type of Engrish that if they used that, it would be the same as using "Usoppu" or "Choppa". But this is all my guessing, it very well could be Eneru. And I have no problems at all with it if it was. Don't take this post as a complaining one, Eneru/Enel/Ener/SKY LORD!!1111, all is fine to me. Just statin my opinion.
-

And Eneru just strikes me as Energy Rush, perhaps due to Pikachu being the first "anime" character ever that I saw using electricity…-_-;

Ener is how his name should almost defintely be romanized since his name is a play on the word "energy." I prefer "Ener' but anything but "enel" will do. People just want it because they saw it in the fansubs and it's what they're used to, so to them "it sounds right."

^Why I prefer "Enel" (or Ener)

Somehow, that makes me prefer Eneru, EVEN MORE!!!

^Why I prefer "Enel" (or Ener)
I personally despise "Ener and "Eneru", and not just because of fan translations either. I don't even know how to pronounce them… (En-air) and (En-air-roo). It just sounds wierd and un-natural. It's not even super natural, it's more artificial.
I personally think that Enel flows better and it easier to pronounce. (En-el) or (Ene-looo)
-
I like the name Eneru because it's sounds cooler
-
I like the name Eneru because it's sounds cooler
But how do you pronounce "Eneru" without using an accent? It rolls off my tounge perfectly if I say it as it's said in Japanese, but If I try to say in the flatest American way possible it just sounds dumb. Does anyone know the way they will pronounce it?
(Ene-roo)
or
(Ener-Oooh)
or
(E-Naru)
or
(E-Neih-ruu)
or
(Eh-ne-row)
or
(Ey-neh-rue)There are so many possibilities, and I've seen so many dubs were words are misspronounced, missgriddled, and missinterpreted. The possibilities are almost endless. But who knows what they will come up with.
LPS: [huggles teddy bear] :pouty:

I think Enel fits for relivance more than how cool it sounds.
Edit: Hell if you search enel on Google you'll get a lot about power companies.
And if you google search ninjas enough you will come across pages of turtles because of TMNT, does that mean turtles were ancient ninjas favorite pet. Unless this Enel power plant is SUPER famous or has a mascot or insignia that involves lightning I fail to see the connection outside of the fansubs used ENel, and there happens to be a power plant called that.

But ener/eneru is most likely the more accurate one. Not to mention many ppl STILL mispronounce Luffy's name. Should they change it to something easier for ppl to say in english?
"Eneru" Is a japanese accented word so you pronounce it the way the japanese would. That's like saying how do you pronounce a spanish word WITHOUT the spanish accent? You pronounce Ener, like "In-air"

1962: Enel starts upEnel, the Ente Nazionale per l’Energia Elettrica [or National Electrical Energy Corporation] was started up on 6 December. It was responsible for producing, importing and exporting, transporting, transforming, distributing and selling electrical energy.
Although I can't prove that this has ANYTHING to do with Enel.
