After I recently read the June issue of ASJ, I was slightly disgusted. There was an "evolution" in this issue, but not for the better. The evolution was merely five chapters of Naruto, the loss of Shaman King (now in volume form, but won't come out for 6 more months), Bobobo (strangely, they made a big hype for only ONE chapter a month) and finally, Yugioh manga is taking over the Issue. First of all, there are two series that have to do Yugioh, which honestly is strange because i thought Yugioh was forgotten about long ago. One Piece now has 2 chapters a month, and if you're lucky a maximum of three. A bit odd though, the Narutards are getting baby fed with 5 chapters a month (oh yeah, and from September-December they are putting out THREE volumes a month, which boosts the amount of volumes to twenty-seven). Now look at all the great manga, which is either being deleted altogether to be placed in volume form in half a year or reduced to 2 chapters a month. What I'm talking about are the three main lacking of chapters : Shaman King, Yuyuhakusho and last, One Piece. I've already explained SK, and now onto Yuyu. Yuyuhakusho ends at volume 19, so there is 7 more volumes. Sadly, at this 2 chapters a month, since its overpowered by Naruto, it won't reach that goal in possibly 3 years! A new manga that is owned by SJ needs to be added, I mean the last new manga we got was Yugioh, and before that, MORE Yugioh! really should be added to the issue, instead of droning on with Yuyu (I like the manga, though), which came out in 1990 and the episodes ended like 3 years ago. Instead of overpowering Naruto, other manga's need to be finished and new one's introduced. Next, is many's favorite, One Piece. Compare Naruto and One Piece's amount of chapters. Currently, One piece (458) and naruto (357). One Piece has more chapters, yet Naruto is getting a large boost and One Piece is staying at it's alltime low. If there are 458 chapters, and ASJ is still in the 130's, its a sad deal. Atleast juice up the 2-3 chapters a month to 4, if not 5. I can see at this rate Baroque Works won't end in atleast 2 years. The anime is almost done with BW, yet the manga in ASJ is still moving at a snail's pace.
Discuss this, and add your thoughts on what should be improved in the magazine.

Viz has the rights to just about everything having to do with Naruto, while they only have manga rights for One Piece, so they care a lot more about Naruto.
666 Satan would not come to American SJ because it's not serialized in Japanese SJ. It's published in GanGan Comics.

Oh wow, the last time I bought a copy was when Yugioh was still big. But it's a shame for what's happening with Shaman King and Yuyu Hakusho. Those were better than their new main feature (27 already? wow).

The way I figure it:
Naruto runs out of gas shortly.
They simply succeeded in burning through their cash cow. So in a year and a half time when Naruto has ran its course, what's going to be left… oh, a little pirate series which has been vindicated with a high-quality dub.

What pisses me off about the American Shonen Jump is the long releases for the volumes. I have to wait at least 3 months per volume, goddamn it. >:(

I'm surprised Bleach isn't bigger then it is in the US.. it's alot more like DBZ then Naruto is. Badass characters, and big fight scenes is what makes Bleach, you think the US would eat it up.
But an orange ninja who has yet to show anything impressive (kage bushin no jutsu is not impressive.) is making such an impression. I can't imagine what happens when the Rasengan is used.
If only the US liked the much cooler mangas (Hitman, DGM, Death Note, Eyeshield(at least these are in my opinion)).
Hopefully One Piece can turn the Narutards into "better" manga fans, One Piece needs to make a revolution.

On another note, stop blaming Naruto for every goddamn thing that happens. There's nothing wrong with milking your cash cow. If OP was as popular, they'd milk that too. What's next? Naruto blamed for war and cancer. If we're gonna blame anybody, blame ourselves and 4kids.

It's not just the manga sections that are monopolized by Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto, it also the advertisments and extras. If you noticed over 75% of the extras involve this crap about these old crappy Naruto games and even crappier "Yu-Gi-Oh" strategies.
I'm still very angry at the fact the SK only last for 1 chapter. It's a much better series that Naruto and Yugioh put together.

INCOHERENT WHINING
Okay, before going any further, here are a few things you've got wrong:
1. You're assuming that there will always be one Bo-bobo chapter every month. The magazine is in a transitional stage and for all we know Bo-bobo could be only recieving one chapter until all the wrinkles are sorted out and the new lineup is finalized.
2. Shaman King is going to be bimonthly, that means one volume every two months, not one volume every half year.
3. I can't for the life of me see how giving a series that's about to end in less than a volume two chapters, and a spin-off series one, counts as "taking over the magazine."
4. Shonen Jump only publishes titles in SHONEN JUMP, or occasionally its sister magazines. That means no 666 Satan/FMA/what-have-you.
5. Paragraphs and punctuation are not only helpful for those reading your posts, but fun as well!
Like I said earlier, the magazine is in a transitional period. If you look at the release schedule for the One Piece volumes, you'll see that it hasn't slowed down any and is still averaging 4 volumes a year (which is about the same rate as Japan, for the record). Everything is getting switched around at the moment, so the final lineup and publishing schedule hasn't been finalized. If I remember correctly, there was also mention in the magazine of another series leaving (I'm not sure if that's referring to Shaman King, which ends its magazine run next issue), another series meeting its natural end (obviously Yu-Gi-Oh!, as it has less than a volume left), and another series entering the magazine (if I had to guess, I'd say Bleach, since its getting close to Japan, but I guess something like Eyeshield 21 is possible; maybe even Jaguar, if SJ has the balls).
So stop your goddamn whining; stuff like this got old years ago, much like bitching about "Zolo." At least wait to see what happens in the coming months.

Anybody find it wierd that next issue is the last issue of Shaman King and we won't read it until January 2008, yet they only give us one chapter. I thought that they atleast should have given 5 chapters in this issue and 5 in next, just to keep us satisified.

1. It appears so far, seeing as they wrote in the preview for May (We are now going to publish Bobo-bo once a month), not sure if once counts for the mag or the chapter, but why would they not start it at the normal amount now?
2. Note how I said "SK will start to be published starting next January", and to be helpful, thats 6 months from now.
3. What series is going to end in less than a volume getting 2 chapters. I said Yuyu ends in 7 volumes… lol? And One piece, unless you're not up to date does not end in less than a volume...

If you release at 6 volumes a year, you can keep the fan interest for many years. If you release at 24 volumes a year, you're burning up resources that could be used to ensure good sales for years. Wether Americans like post-time-skip Naruto or not, they're going to be unable to keep up the pace once they catch up with Japan. That means a large potential sales dropoff (people buying 2 volumes a month who switch back to one volume every 3 months). and possibly some fan turn-off. Look how many people complained that Enies Lobby was moving too slowly, since they had to wait a week to see the new chapters.
Furthermore, you're potentially oversaturating the market's ability to buy.
When I was Naruto's target audience age, my allowance was probably about $15 to 20 per month, when adjusted for inflation.
I would be looking at spending my entire allowance every month to stay current with Naruto at the new schedule.

But, that said, the change in the magazine isn't really reflecting OP, it's reflecting a rank order of popularity. YGO and Naruto are still queen and king, respectively, and while OP is respectable it's not in the same league as those two.

See, that's part of why I want to know if ASJ's Table of Contents work the same way as Japan's. If they do, than it's usually between One Piece and Shaman King for the title of "second most popular title." In that case, I can understand why they'd choose to remove SK; it has a decent sized fanbase to keep it alive as a volume-only title, but it's most likely not attracting more people to the magazine, since the anime ended its broadcast run. One Piece may or may not get more popular than it is now, however.

That's why I say people should wait to see what happens before jumping the gun. Titles are getting shifted around in the magzine right now, so how many chapters a month a series gets isn't set in stone.
I missed that part in the magazine, sorry. That's not a bad schedule at all, though.
Yu-Gi-Oh!: Millenium World has five volumes published, and the magazine is usually about a volume ahead of that. Since it's only going to be seven volumes long altogether, there isn't that much left (you can tell that just by reading the chapters, actually). For a while, it was only getting one chapter a month, but I guess the SJ staff realized it would never finish that way, and bumped it up to two.
I'm not a huge stickler for proper punctuation and all that, compared to a lot of other people anyway. But some regard for proper grammar is appreciated; it was difficult to read your first post.

Despite all of the bad events that happening (Naruto getting about twice as much chapters as the other mangas per issue, two Yu-Gi-Oh series when the fad is long dead), there are some good things happening:

Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is getting some of the attention it so rightly deserves (one chapter a month is better than one standalone volume and no other chapters ever released, if not by much)

once this stupid '5 chapters of Naruto an issue' thing is done (which would probably be once they get to the time-skip, so they won't pass Japan), the amount of chapters per issue for the other series will return to normal.

the original Yu-Gi-Oh series has only one event left to cover: Yugi vs. Atem (since Atem's name was revealed in the latest issue). Afterwards, it will stop being serialized in Shonen Jump, and thankfully stop appearing on the cover.
However, one thing that I can't really forgive is their numbering scheme for chapters in their series. The new numbering system for Naruto and One Piece makes it much harder to tell which chapter you're actually on, and the fact that Bo-bobo starts on chapter 110 is really going to alienate some first-time readers.

Actually, the 5 chapters a month will stop this January (and they said something that will blow you Naruto fans away will come out). Boy, I can't wait! It might be the long awaited complete wipeout of every other series in the magazine and the end of publication of them too! God, I wish sometime it would be like "A new Hikaru No go suprize" or "An awesome arrangement for all you One Piece fans."

They are only releasing 3 volumes a month for September-December 2007, so that they can get to the time-skip by the beginning of 2008. It should go back to a normal schedule after that.

Have you seen FUNimation's dubs? As in a recent one, like Trinity Blood? I've got loyalties to the company but you've got to admit, the California dubs are still on average of better quality than the FUNimation dubs. There are exceptions, but usually that's when a good anime with high production values gets combined with the best of the best cast, as was the case with FMA.
OP is by Toei, and it's not nearly as HQ as FMA. It'll be more simmilar to Dragonball, Dragonball Z or Yu Yu Hakusho than FMA, and while those titles might have iconic dubs they're altogether weaker than the VIZ Media ones.
Ultimately, though, I think AP will be receptive to the dub at first, and gradually start to complain - but, in the end, if FUNimation makes even one large error, a LOT of people will complain in a manner out of proportion to whatever that error may be (like, say, Gun Fall to Gan Forr or something). It'll be a never ending barrage of bastiches until the mods come in and outlaw protesting at all.

I understand what they are trying to do withe the "5 chapters a month!, 3 volumes a month!" thing. If I understand correctly, the Shonen Jump magazine itself isn't doing well, while the Naruto volumes are on the Top 25 Bestsellers list. Maybe when people see "MORE NARUTO!" on the cover, they might actually buy it.
And for god's sake, it's just a 2 chapter increase! Even when they retain this format past January 2008, it won't be till 2014 or whatever when they catch up to the Japan. You might argue that other "good" manga are getting less space, but since nobody in America, including YOU, even supports them when they are released in volume form and would rather download them from the "intranet", then I would think you don't even have a right to complain!

The US Shonen Jump does kinda suck…
1. You don't need to translate ALL of the Japanese characters in the chapters, I don't mind a editors note in the little bar but seeing "DOOOM" and whatever other things they translate just bugs me for some reason.
2. Why are the volumes so huge? and whats with all the extra stuff added like the golden streaks and extra coloring? Why remove "Katekyo Hitman" from the title?
3. Speed the process up! Most of these manga series are long and at least 20+ volumes ahead, and I can't really see a lot of their series like Reborn!, One Piece, etc lasting very long in the US and will probably be dropped before long. I mean they have a full office building full of editors and translators it should not take that long to translate a full Takoban(SP?) volume! I mean at least a series like Bleach which is only what? 10 volumes behind it's original japanese version and it's only that far because it's not in the magazine...

Actually I'm happy that Shaman King is getting a bi-monthly release. I just wish they would have kept Yugioh at the fast releases they were doing last year when duelist was coming out monthly and millenium world had a bimonthly release. It would have been nice to have been done with Yugioh by now.
As for One Piece I really don't mind the waiting. Heck it's taking longer to catch up with Detective Conan and that's a bimonthly release. I'm just surprised they didn't do this with Shaman King a long time ago.
And this is coming from someone who DOES buy the American graphic novels.
and yes I do admit I'm tired of how Naruto is being milked compared to better series. Though it'll be funny when a year from now people are bashing Naruto the way the DBZ fans did (and still do) when the DBZ fad died.

Anyway, I'm glad they're finally releasing more 'Yu-Gi-Oh!' in the magazine. I've been waiting for them to speed up the releases on that forever. I've been wanting to see this ending for so long. It's actually a pretty good series, but I will say that it was milked too much..
The only thing that bugs me about all this is.. money. I don't have the money to keep up with the graphic novels at the moment, which is why I subscribe to the magazine, and borrow from friends. How am I supposed to read Shaman King, Bobobo, and Naruto (all those volumes being released) when no one I know buys them? I'd really rather they kept going at the pace they were going.. I honestly could care less WHEN they catch up, just as long as they do it, yanno? ..In a costly manner, at least. >_>
Anyway, there's nothing I can think of that they could do to 'save' it. Aside from possibly offering a little more. But they're already trying that now.. we'll see how it works out I guess. I just hope the magazine keeps going. Gives me something to look forward to in the mail each month.

Throwing in my two cents about the upcoming dub, it's the internet and it's anime fans, so it's going to happen with every single series ever made. (Reffering to how people will be dissapointed etc.)
But back to the topic at hand. I think the SJ Evolution is a good idea, it lets some new series get some spotlight.
Viz had no intention on doing anything with Bobobo last year, so seeing it get serialized is great.
I'd like to think Hoshin Engi might find its way into the magazine. Viz people at Wondercon said they hoped for it to achieve Naruto-like success, so obviously some of them see potential in it. I still haven't read the preview they had in the magazine or the first volume, so I dunno if it's any good.
As far as Naruto goes, they said they're releasing so many chapters and volumes so rapidly because they wanna start the Shippuden stuff in January I beleive. They'd probably slow down again at that point. And Viz definately intends on milking Naruto as much as possible right now, I remember at Wondercon they also mentioned that skipping the fillers (or at least, not air all of them) might be a possibility for the TV broadcast because they know how fans responded to those.
I have a feeling One Piece might leave the magazine under this Evolution sooner or later. Perhaps around the time Alabasta starts? They could make up that year-wide gap between the manga and anime by starting a quicker volume release for Alabasta and beyond.

As a Shaman King fan, I am glad the series is going to be bi-monthly. After volume nine, the anime only loosely adapted some of the elements from the manga, so I'm very keen to see all the differences.
Now as far as Naruto, I'm divided. While I am keen to see them catch up with Naruto, I do currently dislike how it seems they're effectively ignoring the other series in favour of it. Sure, One Piece may have gotten back it's third chapter but why can't they speed that series up as well? Perhaps OP's popularity may be boosted by them speeding it up to the Enies Lobby arc. Or maybe it should be dropped. While I'd hate to see OP get muscled out by Naruto, at least if they release it as a bi-monthly or maybe even monthly "Evolution" series, I'll be able to catch up more quickly.

The Trinity Blood anime sucks anyway. And FUNimation said at Anime Boston that One Piece would be getting an all-star cast and the best of everything.

Meh I'm sure the soccer mom's would have seen through that instantly though and complained about it. Hercule was probably the safer route. Besides they call him by his right name in the uncut dubs and uncut movies so I don't see the big difference.

Despite making the HFIL, Dragonball, after Funimation began to dub it, still implied that the fighters died. The "send you to another dimension" crap was when Pioneer was dubbing. Funimation picked up the series during the Recoom battle, which is noticeable by the change in Krillin's voice.
Funimation is a respectable company. They did an excellent job with dubbing Fullmetal Alchemist, despite how much the anime utterly sucked.

Some of my points are incorrect I agree, and ASJ does, if they have a bad sales rate, need to get more naruto, no matter how much I hate to say it.
But what really bugs me is the OP fact. OP is over 30 volumes ahead… there isn't much of a reason to have like 4 volumes a year, thats just sad. At this rate, they should just take out OP and have it bimonthly. That way there can finally be 6 volumes a year, and thankfully, BW can end. -

Besides its possible for Funi to have utterly sucked with the Dragonball animes, and to no longer suck and actually be a good company.
Right?Because they may not ahve had shitty edits, but they more than made up for it with the re-script and voice acting.

Conan is a fine example of a "best of the best" show and it's not great, just decent. Perhaps a little less than great because of Conan's size - that means more and more VA's get reused for roles. Happens in the Toei version as well but with a lot more frequency.
Conan hasn't been dropped yet even though it's not profitable for FUNimation - they're hoping on the chance that interest in the show will eventually pick up, and they're too stubborn to let go of it. That's admirable, especially considering they've got the funds to allow it right now.

Because Conan's target audience was 18~25 men, not 7-11 boys. That's why it flopped - Conan is a kid's title that had controversial, un-editable content that FUNimation thought they could market to adults. It failed. Shin-chan is roughly simmilar but has the advantage of being raunchy, but the disadvantage of being ugly. I heard it got renewed for a second run but I'm not sure how popular it was.
OP is being re-oriented from a kid's show to an 'otaku' show, since those are the people OP is really popular with in the West anyway. How well it does is really uncertain - FUNimation's primary source of income for this will be DVDs, which isn't the case for properties like OP normally.

Shin-chan is doing quite well, supposedly. Not a fan of the dialogue that FUNimation decided to go with, but it apparently appeals well to the demographic they're trying to target.

Yes! God, the anime is already about to finish BW (I mean NEXT episode Luffy beats Croc!) and the ASJ JUST started Drum Island… Geez... I calculated and at an average of 2-3 chapters a month Skypeia wont be seen in close to 3 years...

See, the thing is they're not going slowly…..they're going at roughly the same speed the comic gets serialized in Japan. We get 3 chapters a month, they get 1 chapter a week. It's about the same rate, the only difference is they're releasing material alot of people have already seen. In Japan every week it's completely new and unexpected content, but here we have the dub, fansubs, and manga scans at our disposal on top of the Viz manga.
The problem Viz needs to realize is this:
- Hardcore One Piece fans who follow the manga online (or if they're in Japan) are already at Thriller Bark, years ahead of Drum Island
- At the same time, dubbies are about to finish Alabasta and by summer's end we'll be in Skypiea!
So basically, Viz is releasing material that not only hardcore fans have already seen, but even the casual dub-viewers have already seen!
