When will it end??!!!

Yikes :cwy: Lots of arguments and ranting. To be honest, like someone mentioned earlier, that stuff IS kind of scary.
well the main reason I exploded is because it seems to be the only time people listen to me
thanks for the news hmmm… Montblanc Noland...
we're used to Montblanc Norland right? Well that's fine. As long as it's not something screwy for no reason, I don't have a problem with that. -
Ha, don't worry, I actually don't remember who did what, just that it was hard to read anything BTW I do check out your site often now, it's pretty cool. Even saw that YouTube clip of the Jaya/Skypiea 4Kids voices in that video game. Man those voices sucked
-
Heso!
I am glad to see that Mato dropped by. I think that everything will get calmer again. I think things need to stay calm so that we can get some of the VAs and other production people to come talk to us which would be nice. I think that Mato and Funimation have already done a great job with helping us get a great new release of One Piece. One more two Berry opinion.
-
I think "Noland" is the best translation, because it brings up the interesting double entendre of him finding land, but when they returned with the king, there was "No land". It's a correct translation, and probably the one Oda would use as well.
-

really? wow.. maybe I should start updating again ^_^

I'm not able to be here much lately and the thread spirals out of control again with arguments over minor issues. :P Don't make me start deleting stuff.

Viz uses Pirate King (sometimes)
Example to FUNi that Viz doesn't know what the fuck they are doing. If you want some stuff which ofically says Pirate King, it was on the back of that toy thing I sent and this from the Settei Pre thread: (A bigger size version can be directly downloaded from here)
Also Viz used Pirate King on two seperate pages in Issue #40 and #41. I don't know if they're in the printed in volume 11 however.
Shonen Jump USA #40 Page 219
Shonen Jump USA #41 Page 131
And a small combined version of thier uses
Also, I asked this earlier and I still wonder. "Re-reading the manga, I remembered something I forgot to say. Mato, in the original, Buggy says flashy on almost every sentence he says, which is cut from the 4kids dub and viz manga (but kept in the USA GBA game…). Is Buggy's "Flashy" tradement gonna be kept or not?"
And finally, I think that Noland is actually kind of a good pun "No land" and since Oda, like Toriyama (e.g. All the people from Planet Vegeta(ble) are named after fruit and veg), uses puns in some of the character's names so it's proabley correct.
Thanks in adavnce and sorry if this was too long!

The thing about Pirate King. It says Kaizoku-Ou in Japanese. I think if it was to be King of the Pirates, it would be Kaizoku no Ou. Pirate King and King of the Pirates are different in context. I think someone mentioned something already that King of the Pirates is kinda like saying a king with pirates as subjects that they rule over, as where Pirate King is something else. Blah blah blah, I am too tired.
-
Erm, while I agree with EvilgamerX and anyone else who differentiate the two terms, shouldn't we be focusing our energies on cleaning up the rest of the term inconsistencies? I mean, we'd all look pretty stupid when the new dub airs, and we hear something like this:
Luffy : "I'm the man who'll be the Pirate King!!"
Us : Yay!
Nami "Zolo, tell Chopper to use his Boosts! I'll hit them with my Climate Baton! But first, let's go face the I. Cumulus Tests"
Us : O_O;^Now I know that some of the terms were fixed, but we have to pick our battles here. It's like trying to fix a gourmet dinner, and you spend the whole evening arguing over where the napkins should go.
-
Like I said before about the King of the Pirates. It's not a translation issue at all. It's an… well, aesthetic issue.
Take the above quote "It's where the pirate king died."
Now replace "pirate king" with "king of the pirates".
"It's where the pirate king died."
"It's where the king of the pirates died."In the second sentence more than half of the syllables are dedicated to nothing more than describing the subject. It throws the balance of the sentence off because of the unnecessary amount of content dedicated to such a simple subject. Frankly, I'm not sure if it's even grammatically correct.
As a writer, I don't make a habit of using four words when two will do. Especially in dialogue. It simply isn't natural.
"King of the Pirates" isn't a proper title. Gold Roger wasn't royalty. It was a nickname.
King of the Pirates works when you're talking about Gold Rodger formally or trying to drive home the seriousness of the title, but when it comes to day to day conversation, Pirate King is the more appropriate choice.
-

First we need Mato to reveal more term inconsistencies…which means we have to nag him and tell him what does the script say about X name. :p

greatpirateking: I can tell which version of 海賊王 you prefer just from your name Anyway, like I said, it's hard to tell what exactly they want. It's… weird. Maybe I'll just use my "it wasn't clear" card and use whatever fits whenever.
Oh, as for Buggy, I didn't do the few Jaya eps with him. I'll see what's up though. I'm pretty sure he doesn't use it in every sentence, though. Just a lot I'm guessing maybe for 4Kids and Viz it just seemed too awkward to the editors or something. But anyway, for now I require my slumber time. I shall try to return with info when I can.
-
Just curious; since they're all fixed now, mind sharing some of those REALLY f'ed up old names? For curiosity's sake…
-
Something tells me that a good number of those names will serve naught but to make our heads s'plode. And I like my head…
Also, off topic, has anyone actually SEEN Mato as "online"? Everytime I look, he comes in, posts, and leaves. He's like a ghost. Or ninja. Or Ninja - Ghost.
Number 21 ""I think he was two ninjas taped together to make one giant ninja!"

It's called "use invisible mode" under your User CP.
-
Yeah I was gonna say, Im usually invisible on the forums I go to… it's a handy tool if you dn't want people bothering you much..
not that people here WOULD bother to bother me >.>

Thats awesome. Props to whoever forgot to make that clear on the list.
Sorry for the ranting and all by the way. Its just I see this as One Pieces last chance for success in the states and I want to see it happen really badly. Its like tryimg to make sure every little thing is noticed by being as vocal about it as possible. I know I look like a jackass, but if this dub is good it'll be worth having everyone hate me.
As for Gum Gum, really it can be used as a translation, but Gomu can be a lot of things (if what people are telling me is true). Rubber would be the most accurate for this situation, but its mainly that i just find Gum Gum to sound corny. It might sound better with you guys doing it, just it isn't my first choice for a name. Obviously you guys have to use it and I know that and its fine. I'm not sure how it got brought up again, but for me it was more not having anything to talk about than wanting to whine about it.

Hopefully hell get to keep it at least on the sub track.
I appreciate the time and effort you guys are going through for this show by the way. Hope it turns out good and gets popular.

Some terms known that bug me:
Climate Baton…I can live with it.
Chopper's "boosts" are said as Points in ENGLISH.
Zolo.
Noland. If you need a reason...it sounds like Northland, isn't as awkward and it might fit in with the fact that he could find "gold nor land" on the island because Jaya split.
Although Awkward, I prefer Rubber Rubber over Gum Gum.
Pirate King is MUCH better than King of the Pirates.Overall, I can live with all of it, although hearing Gum Gum will be annoying. If I had to pick 1 or 2 to get changed, I'd probably pick Pirate King and Zoro to be the proper names, with Rubber Rubber and Chopper's Points coming in close behind.
-
Dunno if anyone mentioned this already, but I took a screencap from the AX site talking about their One Piece prizes for the con. Zoro is spelt correctly on both the site AND the ad.
[qimg]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v392/Kirbopher15/zolol.png[/qimg]
Don't think too much into this. Note these are Japan merchandise, and that's probably the reason it's being spelled "Zoro". It's not American merchandise.
-
Hey! Does anyone think they should try to keep the 4kids voice actors? Does anyone know if they are? I think they should probably keep the voices for Sanji and Zolo…Luffy's can go be unemployed though.
-

Somebody else is going to have to get the pitchforks. I've got my hands full with the burning torches.
-
Sorry, I'm firing up the chainsaws, someone else can be the pitchforkers.
-
@GGBA: No, No, and No
-
the hell? Is he serious? That's a joke right.
oh I'll get the pitchforks all right.
-
Hey! Does anyone think they should try to keep the 4kids voice actors?
shakes finger like Sonic
THATS NO GOOD
Darn anyone have a pic of this?
-
Geez! No mercy! Fine! I'll reject the voice actors! There! Rejection complete!
-
So Gomu does not mean gum? Damn there goes my argument out the window lol but Mato sensei was kind enough to provide all the proof we needed. Anyway to other stuff, I agree with Chagron on the balance thing. Its the main reason I prefer Pirate King over King of the Pirates which is awkward as hell like Rubber Rubber>.> But if FUNimation uses it, I won't mind at all. My prediction is that they'll alternate on both depending on the context and word balane. Oh and Skull Kid, sorry about the bitching^^ Its just I was getting a feeling that you were going to hate this dub for not being japanese like the Narutards and that you didn't even like One Piece very much. Glad to see I was wrong. You're a true One Piece fan and a good enough one to appreciate the important things like Voice Acting and Scritp writing. I'd rep you if I knew how lol^^

Yeah I know. For some reason I always sound worse than I intend to. >_>
-
I can see that some people are still upset about gum gum, but I have a suggestion. It's kind of hard to explain :ermm:, but instead of pronouncing it like gum try to pronounce it like a mix of the u in gum and the o in gomu. Maybe that'll help make it sound better and make it different from what 4Kids used. Maybe, Mato, you can try to tell someone this and help it get into the dub .
-
Guys, just, seriously. It's gonna be Gum-Gum, and it's gonna sound as it looks – Gum-Gum.
-
Yeah, GOM GOOOHM! I'm sure that'll work fluently.
-
@Fire Fist:
You're obviously missing the point. Chewing gum is stretchy because it has rubber in it. Luffy is fairly simple minded. For crying out loud, you're talking about a guy who names people after their appearances, and thinks dangerous things are "cool". If he liked chewing gum and noticed it was stretchy, it's possible he could name his attacks after it. Yes, Luffy's that easily amused.
  :getlost: True dat!
-
Okay, time to toss in some change.
While rubber-rubber would technically make more sense, it is in fact a mouthful to say and would almost definitely conflict with the dub over the original animation. Remember, edits to the animation itself costs a horde more than sound edits.
Secondly, gum-gum keeps that light-hearted comedy sense that OP has become known (and loved) for.
And furthermore, what about Luffy going "Gear 2"? Just because he includes 'Jet' in his move names doesn't actually mean he has a turbine strapped to his ass.
Give it a rest and have some fun, damnitallanyway.
-
…in the dub and subs will it be Belli or Berry?
This is a hard one to judge as both of them work as the unique One Piece currency. Not to mention they both fit in with a dub.
-
Nice to hear what you have to say, but next time, try not to triple post.
-
I was just thinking, could Norland possibly mean "north land" too? Just random thought, probably too far-fetched, but hadn't considered it until now.
Wait a minute, was Norland from North Blue or West Blue?
There could be a reference somewhere in there.
-

 'Boosts?!!'
What the hell are boosts? Help me here I stopped watching the 4K versions just a few eps in and stuck to the manga. It was the dub of Luffy's painfully drawn out "Zolo" that did it for me.As for the 'climate baton'. Climatact not only is a much better fit for dubbing purposes, but it has deeper roots than that.
It is Nami's 'climate' weapon hence the "clima". The 'tact' comes from the "other" side of the weapon using its…eccentricities I'll call them, to confuse her opponents throwing them off guard. Although anybody who's seen the Alabasta arc knows, poor Nami took some pains getting used to this aspect of her weapon.
With all this and her knowledge included, Nami is the ideal "tactical backup". For reference I remind all of Luffy's fight against the big 'bots within Foxy's(?)(that fat-ass with the Noro-Noro beam) ship.
-
Glad Mato cleared everything up…again and sorry for starting the gum-gum argument and making you cry. @Mato:
Yikes :cwy: Lots of arguments and ranting.

sits down as a sign of respect

Boosts are a pointless name change from Choppers Points attacks that he says in English.
-
boomergonz…in regards to Climate Baton vs. Climatact....
Here's a quote from Mato earlier in the thread (pg 69, post 1377 to be exact). It helps clarify the use of baton.
2. Baton isn't that crazy. That's what a "takuto" is. If you've ever played Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, it's the same sort of deal. Anyway, here's more info: http://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/search.p…ssist=0&mode=0

As Mato pointed out, "Tact" pronounced in Japanese comes out as "Takuto" which means Baton, and I'm sure Oda deliberately called it that. It's better than 4Kids' Weather Forcer and closer to the original meaning.
Geeze, it's going to be "The King of Pirates 2007: The Bitching Never Ends" here. Now it's names, soon it'll be whole lines of dialog. Just watch.
I don't have a problem with Gum Gum, sure it'll sound odd compared to the Japanese version, but so will the rest of the dub.
I didn't like Noland at first either, but from mentioning it PAGES ago, Terek brought up a good point about the possible intention of "No land" and saying the name in Natural English, I actually like it a lot better than Norland now.
-
People will complain.
It's very, very close to the 4kids version.
The only knowledgeable improvement being the voice acting and script writing.…I'd be paranoid too.
Anyway, will gum gum be in the subs?

Yes it will be in the subs, along with most of the other dub terms from what I'm hearing.

I doubt it'll be anywhere close to 4Kids dub. Not to mention, the uncut DVDs.
…
You are right, though. No matter what, people will complain.

I bet I would have very few complaints with the Bebop dub if I went back and watched the original.
http://www.bolt.com/FallingThroughTime/video/Cowboy_Bebop__Session_1__/1372717
Notice how the voices and dialog sound (for the most part) natural instead of corny and awkward like some dubs. If One Piece got a dub like this, it would probably be beating Bleach in ratings and might even have a shot at competing with Naruto once it got to Water 7.
I mean just imagine Water 7 with a dub like that. So awesome…
-
Which is why instead of complaining, I post stuff which might help get the names corrected
By the way, I found another use of Pirate King in issue #43 page 238. I don't know if it was in the 12th USGN. (The large and full version here)
Three "Pirate King"s in 4 issues. They were getting lazy,eh? -
About the pirate king thing….
volume 3 of the manga
-
SO, since it's so OBVIOUSLY interchangable, why not just use BOTH terms as seen fit in context/ readability. If it makes sense, go with it.
GEE WHAT A GENIUS IDEA!

The problem isn't really so much the name (although I find Pirate King so much better), but having to use strictly "King of the Pirates" for all the dialog regarding it. It just would sound incredibly awkward and not even match the lip movements/be way too long most of the time. If they can alternate when necessary it will be fine.
