HFIL = Home For Infinite Losers, it used to piss me off that funimation did stuff like that, now i just chuckle and shake my head. Though if FMA is any indication the company has grown a lot in 13 years.

I always liked Believe It.
-
I also didn't really have a problem with Believe it. And I have to say that you can't really compare HFIL and Believe it. HFIL was an edit because they couldn't say hell on the edited DBZ dub. Believe it is just sort of something that Viz stuck in because Naruto had a catch phrase in Japan and they probably wanted him to have one in the dub.
-
You know… I really hope Battle Stadium DON is easier to release now that FUNi owns One Piece. Since they also own DBZ, all they need to do is strike a deal with Viz for Naruto. It'd be awesome.
-
Hey guys, it's A-Log once more. Sorry I haven't posted in a while, but I have heard of FuniMation taking over for One Piece. I apologize if I'm posting in the wrong subject, but I still have mixed-feelings about it. On the one hand, it's great that we can finally get an uncut and true to the original vision of the series, but on the other hand, it's being dubbed in Texas, which is ironcially a "Red State". The saddest thing to me is that the NYC voices are banned from having another chance to right the wrongs that was bestowed upon 4Kids. We've lost our second chance. I can't even audition for Funi's vision of One Piece unless I can A) send them the voice clips via ISDN or B) move there, which I cannot risk. The point here is how can I cope with the Funi version without hoping that their dub won't stink? I mean, NYC is still embarrassed by the 4Kids debacle. Would've worked if it was dubbed by Central Park Media; that would've saved them from their economic troubles right now.

I..uh..well, let's see.
I think the FUNi dub will be fine, because, well, FUNi has some amazing voice actors at their disposal. And FUNi's dubs since DBZ have been pretty amazing, or to downplay at least above average.
So, yeah..
-

If that happens.. I'll be mad that I own a Japan version of DON . What I am hoping for is a Grand Battle Adventure 2 with the Funi dub voices.
-
Actually, the "Believe It" thing shows how fans can actually make a difference. The main problem with the phrase was simply that the fans didn't like it, and now, Naruto hasn't said "Believe It" in the dub in over 40 episodes.
The funny thing is the Japanese fans didn't like "dattebayo" either, but Kishimoto left it in because it's part of Naruto's personality. Naruto also said "dattebayo" in the Japanese version a helluva lot more than "Believe it!" in the English, even the English episode with the highest "Believe it!" count probably still has no where near as many as the Japanese episode with the highest "dattebayo" count.

Well you know, most of the time he isn't directly saying "dattebayo" but more or less, he's using it as a sentence coupla, ending almost everything with a "-ttebayo". At least from what I've noticed. (doesn't watch Naruto fansubs)
Anyhow…
It would be kind of cool if we see Battle Stadium DON on the American shores. I could easily imagine both Viz and FUNi cooperating with each other on that venture. If/when that ever happened it'll probably end up as a Wii title.
-
There may be one for Wii for all we know in the future. I hope so, the first one was a great start… some things need to be fixed though. If so, I can without a doubt see it coming to U.S. shores.
-
One piece ultimate adventure could go to US shores.. In 08/09 if Funi gets to Enies lobby by then
-
Concerning the new dub, my current biggest concern is with the HD widescreen episodes. I'm concerned Toei will fuck us over yet AGAIN and give us the R2 FS DVD episodes.
Toei's phailures are ranking up to 4kids'.

If that happens I'm not buying the DVDs. Hopefully well get widescreen episodes for the DVDs though. Hopefully Funi is competent enough to do that.

I mentioned in my post it's not FUNi I'm worried about, it's the raging failures at Toei I'm worried about. From their list to FS R2 DVDs, Toei is PHAIL ALL THE WAY.
-
I'd just like to drop in and say, I've been watching Funi's BECK dub which also uses the Justin Cook, Chris Bevins, and Mike McFarland team who are working on One Piece, and I REALLY don't think there's anything to worry about.
And I have to say, I know a lot of people were wanting Greg Ayres to do Luffy … and I had never heard him before until Beck, and I'm amazed just how much he sounds like Spike Spencer, but I just don't see him as Luffy, Usopp maybe.
-
Those episodes aren't 'till a while anyways, so let's just enjoy Skypeia.
-
Sorry for interrupting the flow of the thread lol but I've just though of something that I think is big. Remember those boring filler episodes during the enies lobby arc? The 5 fillers that we hated so much. Well if Funimation does those episodes, to us they might be boring fillers but to everyone else, its going to be like a mini redub of the seasons 4Kids screwed over! And I find that cool! It means we're gonna see Shanks saving Luffy and that heart wrenching music as we see that his arm had been ripped off! We're gonna see Chibi Zoro and his lameting over Quina! We're gonna hear dub Zeff and Chibi Sanji! We're gonna hear dub Belle-mere and see if Funimation will get her out of the dungeon! We're gonna hear Dub Hiriluk and dub Kureha! Unbelievable^^ Lol to Toei. Its amazing how a bunch of boring fillers could have so much significance now^^ For once Toei did something right and they did it unintentionally!^^ lol XD
-
That's quite a bits away, though. It's possible that FUNi could get to those earlier episodes by then.
-
Yeah, I thought of that too. However, I would hope FUNi would get back to the earlier episodes before they get to EL.
-
That's one of the reasons I really think Cartoon Network (and Toonami Jetstream if possible) needs to start airing FUNimation redubs of the earlier episodes as soon possible. It's not just the flashbacks that are important, but the plothole 4Kids created when they cut out Little Garden. And I'm willing to bet the fudging with Laboon will create a plothole down the line. And if you consider the fillers, cutting out the Millenium Dragon arc created somewhat of a plothole with Ocean's Dream.
A weekday run would be the best so that by the time another season comes up (past episode 205) everything will be pretty much caught up. Of course, as was mentioned at Anime Boston, it'll mostly depend on how these new episodes do in ratings. So – let's all do what we can to make sure "One Piece" gets the best ratings it can get.
-
I want FUNimation and Cartoon Network to do a nice chunk of advertising. Here commercials for Naruto airs several times throughout the day, everyday.
-
That's actually a great idea to put the earlier episodes on jet stream. Though they would probably be edited.
-
There's one thing I hope they don't do with One Piece that CN continues to do with Naruto: air commercials about the next episode while the current episode is still airing.
-

While that would be nice and all, Funimation is damn busy just cranking out 145-205 as it is; expecting them to be able redub an additional 144 episodes in between that is unrealistic, to say the least.
As for the plotholes, I think that casual fans won't notice/care and hardcore fans are already aware of what 4Kids cut out, so I don't see it being a disaster if Little Garden isn't aired before then.
-
Sort of a random post, but as I was checking stuff just now, I saw the guy's name is mentioned as "Franky" in the list. Thought that'd help relieve fears about that

Wow, Toei mentioning Franky already? Awesome.

FUNimation already said that they're busy with those episodes; I don't expect them to be working on the earlier episodes at the moment, but by the time they meet Cartoon Network's deadline I do.
To me the best thing would be to just run with the new episodes on Toonami starting in August throughout the rest of the year, with some really promotion and advertising from Cartoon Network. While the new season is still running weekly into 2008 I'd like to see them start running the first 65 episodes (FUNi redub) on a weekday slot, 5 days a week early in 2008 somewhere around January, February, or March. When those end they can start rerunning them depending on their ratings, and then later in the year, like in summer or fall, they can start doing the same thing with episodes 66-130. They could rerun those on weekdays again, and in the meantime the new season will still be running on Toonami. Once the new season end they could start airing episodes 131-143 on Toonami, and then when those end they could premiere the next new season. It'd be kind of like how "One Piece" took a break on Toonami for several months around August 2006 and then the new 4Kids episodes didn't come out until February of this year.
Yeah, it's pretty long-winded, but what do you guys think of my idea?

That would be asking FUNi to edit 144 episodes, which would be more than twice as much as what they're working on. Remember, for Cartoon Network, they still have to edit the show. The only way this would ever happen is if One Piece becomes MASSIVELY successful and if there's a HUGE demand for it.
-
Yay for Franky!
Now I'm worried about his "SUPA!", honestly "SUPER!" just wouldn't be the same.
-
But that is what he's saying. It just sounds like "SUPA" because of the accent…
-

Well Adam said at Anime Boston whether they air the earlier episodes on Cartoon Network or not depends on how well the new episodes perform. I wouldn't have a problem with how and when they run them, or even if they do, as long as it's proportional to how well the new and current episodes do in ratings, the demand as you said. My concern is that if they do decide to run the earlier episodes they get caught up with the story arcs following Skypiea and G-8 before they get too far in devlopment (like in the middle of Enies Lobby for example). And editing the episodes for Cartoon Network isn't nearly as much work as actually scripting and recording them, and like you said, the number itself, 143 episodes, is A LOT of work, I agree.
-
Yay for Franky!
Now I'm worried about his "SUPA!", honestly "SUPER!" just wouldn't be the same.
Castlevania: Portrait of ruin had the same problem, the Grand Cruz attack sounded lame in english (Grrrrrand! CRUZ! X( )I'm thinking when he says it normally (i.e. "This week, I am super.") It'll be said "super", and when he drage is out, like when he PWNs Fukurou, it'll be more like the "SUPAAAA!!" we've all come to know and love. Drag out the AAAAA bit and only tack on the "R" a little bit.
-
Well, One Piece was called "The next DBZ" from early on, and from the history of the show compared to DBZ, it's matching up almost perfectly. Licensed by shitty company, edited shittily, licence revoked from shitty company by Toei, FUNimation gets license. Next step is "show becomes hugely successful." I have no doubt that OP will do better in the upcoming years, especially as it goes on. We just have to give it a while.
EDIT:
I'm htinking when he says it normally (i.e. "This week, I am super.") It'll be said "super", and when he drage is out, like when he PWNs Fukurou, it'll be more like the "SUPAAAA!!" we've all come to know and love.
The translation team could always give "Super" an accent by saying, "SUPAH!" instead of "SUPER!"
-
I think One Piece also benefits from the fact that Skypiea can give it a total re-start. The typical viewer could probably get into the show without seeing any previous arc.
-

Not to mention Sanji's Anti-manner Kick Course. It has great rythym when said in Japanese, but say it to yourself in pure English, and you hear how lame it sounds.

I say the big suprise at AX should be that they are dubbing One Piece movie 4 and showing that first on CN as a little test and to get people into OP before their dub airs. Robin joined wouldn't be a spoiler in it, so why not?

I've thought of this as well, I mean, I'm sure Funi loves doing this for fans, but their real top priority is re-establishing the franchise and there's no better way to show those folks who never took OP seriously before to show one of the movies.
The other things I have the feeling the big announcement will be part of the Japanese cast and/or maybe even Oda himself. That's kind of what I thought when they referred to the surprise as "hopefully getting everything together" and "things coming through"
-
Awesome news about Franky (if true). If they can get the voice actor to yell SUPAAA right it could work as super, just he has to stretch it out and say it with enthusiasm.
And about the earlier episodes airing, I would love for that to happen. Its a shame we can't somehow rig their ratings numbers. >_>
Hopefully it gets much better ratings than the 4Kids version does though. I just hope Funi isn't expecting instant results, since One Piece has left a sour taste in everyones mouths in America for years now and it'll take time for people to start watching it again and see the difference.
Also I've been thinking. If Viz had the series it would probably be taking a back seat to Naruto like the English manga is now (since its their cash cow and everything else is second priority to them), so Funi having it might be better. It just depends how it goes.
-

to the uk..no spoiler
But the way things are going on CN with the movies,specials,marathons.. US could wait a while for that episode ..so far its a spoiler for the US unless they can get through the next 5-10 episode with no special events
I saw DBZ in 1997 when it debuted and I believe it wil be 6 that will be dubbed 1st

Eh, not quite accurate. Funi was still making the show (albeit with Saban being the fault of the censorship). All that changed was the location of the dubbing, and a falling out between Funi and Saban.
And most DB fans have fairly fond memories of that dub.
-
Yes, the first episodes which were done by Saban, while they could've been much better, didn't have the same cringe-inducing voice-acting that 4Kids' "One Piece" episodes had.
-

Saban distributed, FUNimation did the work. Or dirty work I suppose. I recall this because back then DBZ was like CRACK and I was calling TV stations when episodes kept repeating which led me to FUNimation.
Ah good ol' days before wide-spread use of the internet. When you had to do shit to find shit out.

Ah good ol' days before wide-spread use of the internet. When you had to do shit to find shit out.
Dude…I used to go to libraries and spend hours looking through microfische. And I looked through trader magazines and contacted people through phone and home address to make copies of VHS tapes of rare stuff.
Just thought I'd share that for no apparent reason.
I wonder when we'll start hearing about casting?
-
I just hope FUNi handles it like Yu Yu Hakusho, NOT how they Handled DBZ XP
but they don't have Saban Forcing them to tone down Everything now, so that isn't a problem now, but I see the Parellel to DBZ XP -

Yeah, I just wanted to clarify that I would hate having FS R2 DVD episodes for 207-228. Funi should fight tooth and nail to make sure Toei doesn't force them to use those. Episodes 207-228 are in widescreen (and so is every episode after those), and thats how they need to be on these DVDs if they expect people to buy them.
I have the widescreen raws of 207-228 sitting right here on my computer right now, so I know they exist and I know Funi has no good excuse (other than being forced to by Toei) not to use them. Widescreen, HD versions of those episodes aired on TV in Japan and thats how they should be on the DVDs. >_>

So are the R2 DVDs for 229 and up widescreen? Because I was downloading some of them from Share, and they seemed to falter from the FS problem as well.

Yeah, Dythim says 229 and up is widesreen on those DVDs. Not sure which ones your using though. Are you sure your downloading DVD rips and not TV recordings?
-
Yeah, I'm downloading the DVD ISO's from Share, and the resultant episodes were FS. It made me incredibly confused, because the sites I saw that were selling it had it in WS.
I'm also sure they weren't TV rips, because the color quality was just too good for TV.
The DVDs I was downloading did lack the extras I though they would have had though (ie. creditless OP/EDs) so I got a wee bit suspicious there.
