Ah that was the problem. Sure I'll state some reasons why kenshin is mediocre, and I really do hope that you do try to counter them, and not pull whatever you've pulled so far.
Reasons why Kenshin is mediocre:
-Side-cast; the cast of Kenshin is very forgettable, and blah. So many characters, and yet hardly anyone is given time to be explored/developed. Everyone is just…..there without any sort of depth. Kaoru is there so she can be used to draw Kenshin into conflicts, and her relationship with Kenshin is more paper-thin then the paper it is drawn on. Even Shishio, easily the best, and the most interesting character in the series, suffers from Watsuki having no real clue as to what he wants to do with the character. Villains are thrown in to try, and get Kenshin to kill again, and that's as far as Watsuki thought about them. No depth, identity, or personality that can make them have an actual character instead of being one-note plot devices.
-The themes; Now the themes of Kenshin are pretty damn interesting.... at least on paper. Atonement, peace, and redemption. That should be interesting, right? Especially since hardly any shonen series tackles these themes. So how do you take those interesting ideas that can provide some REALLY interesting character moments, and turn them into the most cliched shonen bullshit? Well Kenshin is the answer to that question. No real exploration of the ideas, or hell even the main character's journey, which takes me to my next point.
Kenshin- Holy crap talk about a cliched character. Emotionless killing machine who randomly meets a women, and suddenly comes to life, and starts living my her principal because why the fuck not. Pretty fucking original ah. You would think that his backstory be given Golden-age arc-level of attention to see who the character is, where he comes from, how he interacts, how he changes etc..... Anything that would provide a deeper understanding of his character, and humanize him. But nope, that would require actual thought, and effort. Instead you are presented with a lazy scenario that literally exists to be like "how tragic. FEEL BAD FOR KENSHIN". You can literally skip that entire scene, and not lose much of anything as far as characterization is concerned.
And that's not just his backstory. His development in itself seems to be skimmed over. By the first 20 chapters, you can predict exactly what the end result would be, and that's exactly what happens. Which in itself would be fine if the execution made up for it, but instead it's delivered in such a dull, predictable, and straightforward way. You can literally cut out 90% of the manga, and not lose much of anything as far as Kenshin's development goes. It only exists to start the cool, and flashy fight scenes.
The reason why Vagabond, which is a pretty similar manga to Kenshin in its ideas, is far superior is because of the fact that the character is given shit ton of time, and attention to develop. He matures, and changes in a very natural way which is very apparent in the actual visuals. There are fights, but that's not the focus of the manga. It's the character, and the amount of time Inoue spends on them more than the fight itself.
Kenshin, on the other hand, is a complete opposite in that regard. It's focuses on the fights, while the actual character stuff is background noise. Kenshin's goal of redemption is hardly even given time to be explored. He doesn't want to really fight, but most of the manga literally shows him fighting.
The villains- Is there anything that needs to be really said? Shishio is interesting, but everyone villain aside from him is the definition of cliched one-note villains. I mean they are not even shonen "i will take over the world" villains. They are simply there to get Kenshin to kill again. Calling them "characters" would be insulting the actual one-note villain characters. They are empty caricatures.
Watsuki- You know how the thought-process of the writer can be really interesting, and insightful? Yea well that's not who Watsuki is. His bullshit talk of nothingness in the volume was soooo tedious to read through, and more importantly exposes just how much of a fluke Kenshin really was. Kenshin is not a series whose artist had any real message, or thing to really explore. He simply threw random shit at the wall, and hoped that it would stick.
Well, there you go. My reasons for why Kenshin isn't anything special in any real way.
Let's see you try. I do hope that you don't back out now.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Now I'm gonna bet that most people who were harping on "DAH WHERE ARE THE REASONS" are not going to reply, or discuss the series, that is even if they don't opt for a more lazy cliched response.
