GREAT, GREAT, GREAT, FREAKING AWESOME!
i'm getting really pumped up by that arc. this arc is really something we still didn't see in OP. i read the chapter, and later all of your replies here, i have to say, reading all these theories of yours is really great.
VL7, the thing about the 21KG is really interesting, there's a possible connection to the soul of Brooke, but because of Cerberos' number, i actually think it's just a number. and there's probably lots of numbers, meaning lots of experiments of Hogback's out there. what will we see next? a Wolfman? Frankenstien? Osama Bin Laden? i can't wait to see lots of creepy stuff.
Hogback = The Docorine of the arc
Hildon = The Dalton of the arc
Remember that Franky needs someone to supply him with cola? I doubt Oda will reuse the same idea twice and always have a refrigerator nearby the action to supply him with fuel. What if Brooke can store cans of cola in his hair? It's big, wide, and "strong" as he said. It would give his afro a purpose. Yeah, this would sort of downgrade Brooke's role on the battlefield, merely being an assistant to Franky. Yeah, I know it's a dumb theory, but it came to mind.
Is this the first of Nami's attires to feature an earring?
Maybe it's Dr. Hogbank who steals shadow, because he needs them to create his creatures… And it will result in a tag team with Chopper and Brook verus Dr. Hogbank and maybe the rest of the strawhatts could fight against a dosen of his creatures or something...
Wouldnt it be cool if CHopper got a centaur Point? :O He could look sorta like a keeper of the grove from warcraft.
She wore jewelry in the Alabasta arc when she and Vivi pretended to be dancers.

I don't want Chopper to have an infinite amount of transformations. Eight alone is pretty big.
Chopper will not have any transformations beyond the eight he already has, I agree. If each Rumble damages his molecular scale and after how bad it got damaged by Monsta point, a fourth would probably kill him.
Brooke. Brooke, Brooke, Brooke. Brooke. Brooke, Brooke - Brooke, Brooke.
But aren't we forgetting something for our possible strawhat recruit? The flashback! I'm anxious to see what happens in Brooke's flashback, if he gets one. It seems we've already been told everything that lead up to him becoming what he is know, minus strong details. But there's got to be more than meets the eye. Oh Oda, when will you bestow us a memory of a skeleton?
You know, if Brook joins the SHs, he will be the new oldest/tallest SH. Franky's the current one after he usurped the position from Robin.
Do we know how old he was when he died? And once you're dead, you don't age.
Tallest, definetly. He's a skyscrapper compared to the others.

I thought about it, actually. I really can't wait to see his past, and of course, his body. just curious about his apearrance.
@Pass:

but theres the problem, brook is not entirely dead
he is both dead and alive
I still don't think he can age. Zombies are the living dead, but they don't age, do they?
His soul floated around for a year, and only a year. And that took place 1 decade ago, not several decades.
Well, he said his soul floated around for decades. And he'd have to be at least in his 20s when he died. So that puts him at atleast 40.
Read what I just posted. Then you'll see.

Did you pull this out your ass? I think you pulled this out your ass.
@Pass:
Not really. It's like saying it's ironic that Usopp doesn't call Kuro nakama.
You can't trust what you see as a bad idea.
While I agree that you can't trust what you see…..
Traditionally A pirate crew is supposed to trust their captain's judgment.
Albiet Luffy has a habit of making outlandish decisions.
The Kuro example is a bad analogy being that Luffy never considered or Asked Kuro to be in his crew.
Generally people who Luffy asks to join are either
1. Cool (to luffy)
2. A good person
3. A desired crew position.
The irony I found in ussop's statment Is, he has no say in who joins the crew or not. Being that he LEFT the crew in a hissy fit and had to cry to get back in.
I'm not saying that Brooke's intentions are 100% benevolant.
But I dunno I'd like some positive character development for Ussop....I sure do HOPE he gains SOME courage by the end of this arc.
@Bad-Beat:

He pulled that out of his ass.

No one in the crew has "no say" in who joins or not, Luffy isn't a dictator. Luffy's usually right, but not always. Remember the Laboon arc?
Usopp's just questioning having a freakin' skeleton join. I would too, frankly.

Never did i say that no one else had any say. Besides You can't really stop Luffy from doing anything.
Usopp's just scared of it. He said he wouldn't be able sleep at night with Brook at night. Lol… would you be able to?
@$abZ:

If I was in "op land" Re-animated Skeletons would be the least of my worries.
My whole rant stems from the age-old One piece Argument: Cowardly Ussop.
Thats about it.
Granted he's a interesting character. The fact alone that he, a 'Average' Guy is on the grandline is a feat in its self. I'm not saying he hasnt changed at all since his introduction. I just have high hopes that maybe, just maybe Ussop will serve a higher purpose in this arc. And perhaps he will with his knowlege of the occult.
The Liar-Tinker-Sharpshooter is a character that has alot of potential. Id like to see it be put to use more often.
I think after a while they would warm up to Brook. Besides, Brook would just hang out in Nami's room while she sleeps anyway.

Bad-Beat, have you seen the millions of mistranslations for this chapter?
@Hyper:

What I said had nothing to do with the fact that Luffy wanted Brooke to join his crew, just that Usopp doesn't trust Brooke.

I don't mean to sound rude, but that's just asking to bring back the Usopp issues.
Even though it's never played apart of any story, he is the substitute captain.
@Pass:
Bad-Beat, have you seen the millions of mistranslations for this chapter?
I only ever consider one translation.
Lucky you, Double B. I'm too curious to see what each translations has to offer, to see what differs between each translation. I realized this was a problem for me when I came across a scanslations that used the word "pimped".
edit-
I got to say, this has been of the most interesting chapter discussions I've had the prevelage to to take part in.
Usopp changed so much he's now scared and contests Luffy's decisions
At this point, it's safe to assume that Usopp will be dressed up like Vampire Hunter D for the rest of the arc.
@Pass:
Even though it's never played apart of any story, he is the substitute captain.
Wouldn't Zoro be the substitute captain? I mean, he is the first mate.
Wouldn't Zoro be the substitute captain? I mean, he is the first mate.
It's surely not Usopp. He just proclaimed himself to be the vice captain.
There is really no vice captain really. Zoro does take some sort of role when they are in battle and Nami as we all know takes charge of the whole ship when navigating.
cant wait for more 4 days away
@Pass:

No, that's always been a joke. He's more of the guy who brings up another side of the issue(caution), comic relief (but who isn't?), and underdog character.
Wouldn't Zoro be the substitute captain? I mean, he is the first mate.
More or less. Really, it's just always who has the clearest head at the time who becomes the leader. Sanji and Zoro rarely panic, so they do this often. Nami sometimes takes over where the others stupidity would fail.
Usopp changed so much he's now scared and contests Luffy's decisions
Yes, Usopp hasn't changed. Then again, neither have the others really…
But anyway, now's not the time to judge that. All the SHs are clowns before the action starts. This chapter's a great example, look at Zoro and Sanji.
ALL RIGHT! I don't know if these opinions have been voiced or not, but I'm so excited, I must go ahead and say them!!
As for this arc, I think it is the filler where Zoro will gain his new sword to replace Yubashiri before they go to to Fishman island. With all of this 'cursed' and 'haunted' talk and the fact that Zoro needs a new katana for any upcoming fights, this is the perfect opprotunity.
Do I think Brooke is going to join? …No. At least, I certainly hope not. I like him okay, but to be perfectly honest, I don't like him as a nakama. If he gets his flesh, maybe, but even then I don't want him so much. I think it'll be a Gaimon sort of situation. That is my opinion...I am entitled to it. XD
@Impel:
At this point, it's safe to assume that Usopp will be dressed up like Vampire Hunter D for the rest of the arc.
Does that mean I can start calling him Vampire Hunter U? Please?
For me, probably the funniest part of this chapter is Nami's "I'm sorry" sign. Dunno why, probably because it's just random fun, and made more random by the fact this isn't the kind of thing you get from Nami much.
@Pass:
Even though it's never played apart of any story, he is the substitute captain.
Rootbeer, I think this might be proof of why it isn't true actually – that it's never played a part in any story ...
Usopp wants to become a brave captain of the sea. We know this because he's lied about it many times (it's actually good that he's lied about it so much, because look how often his lies come true!), except that whenever Luffy can't make a decision about something, the Mugiwara follow Zoro's decision, not Usopp's. When Zoro isn't there (or is unconscious or sleeping or whatever) the Mugiwara listen to Nami or to Sanji.
The only one who takes orders from Usopp is Choppy -- and again, only when the others aren't around to override those decisions.
This is important -- so important that it's one of the main points of the "Pride" chapter : the difference between a happy delusion of what it's like to be second-in-command to a captain, and the actual -- unpleasant -- reality of that position (upsetting crewmates and captain, dealing with hostility and criticism, arguing against the prevailing opinion, alienating yourself, mentally preparing yourself for the "unpleasant business" days in advance while everyone else is partying obliviously, etc).
So until Usopp can manage the rougher aspects of being second-in-command to Luffy, it's best for him to do what Luffy told Franky Family to do :
"leave it to Zoro".
Zoro may be a jerk, but what makes him a jerk also makes him exceptionally well-qualified for Second-in-Command/First-Mate.
Hey, on another topic, what do you think the odds of this arc being more Chopper centric are? People seem to be suggesting that Hogback knew Hiruluk, but I see nothing certain. Frankly, the idea of more Hiruluk stuff sounds pretty nice…
Plus, Chopper would be a good pick to fit in with a bunch of mad doctor experiments.
It's been awhile since I engaged in any chapter discussions, but I gotta say something about this one.
First of all, Franky kicks ass! I'm already in love with the Thousand Sunny! The Mini-Merry was also a nice touch!
Also, this new arc is gonna be something special. Dealing with the supernatural will be an interesting experience for One Piece! The introduction of 'Dead Bones' Brook was proof enough of that!
The funniest part for me is when Sanji abruptly said Hogeeh!!
So far, we know that Thriller Bark is from the West Blue Sea (ch.443). When Brook spoke of the Shadow Thief, we saw Robin(herself a West Blue native) react by echoing the word "Shadow?" I recall someone bringing up the possibility of Hiruluk originally hailing from the West Blue, too. Is it assuming too much to believe that the Shadow Thief, Doktor Hogback is a fixture of West Blue folklore, akin to Baba Yaga only more horrifyingly real? In such a situation, it is probable that Chopper heard of him in a bedtime story while staying with Hiruluk.
Hey, on another topic, what do you think the odds of this arc being more Chopper centric are?
I'm hoping so! Choppy is long overdue for some action and development –and what better place to whip out that third rumble ball (the one that creates Monster Point) than in some ghost-filled graveyard?
I'm also eager to see the interactions between Usopp, Nami and Choppy -- especially if they have to defend themselves from our villian. Here's a good chance for the Mugiwara "Scaredy Cats" to prove their mettle.

I like this idea! Another possibility : wasn't Dr Hiruluk a pirate before he turned his attentions to medicine? Perhaps Drs. Hogback and Hiruluk were on the same crew, and if so, then maybe Dr Hiruluk told some "horror stories" to Chopper about his former crewmate.
I also like the idea of Hogback being a flunkie of the academy that "The 20" attended. I forget who mentioned that idea though.

Hm, … I too think (and hope) that Ussop has left lot of potential for future developement, but the whole "Captain Ussop" thing has happened already.
Remember the scene when the mugiwara jumped down the bridge to be saved by Merry. They went onboard of Captain Ussops ship (Luffy was well aware: "Where is Ussop, it´s his ship after all...") to get their asses saved.
Even more Ussop actually took command at the last second on the bridge: It was him who ordered Robin to toss Luffy into the sea and told everyone to jump - he even argued against Zoro.
Never really understood why this didn´t get any attention at all from all those Ussop fanboys and haters on the board.

Actually, Usopp acknowledged he wasn't the captain in Water 7 when he also admitted he was wrong. That was part of him becoming a real crewmember: when he stopped acting like a child.
@Fire Fist:

Though you refered to my post I didn´t really get your point. You surely didn´t understand me the way that I would believe/propagate Ussop was the "real" captain of the mugiwara? Did you?
I just refered to a very specific situation where the most prominent of his lies came true (technically). This happened very silently and was no actual moment of glory as Ussop did not really use his position (hiding as Sogeking) but it happened …
Ussop was the CAPTAIN USSOP, captain of the ship that saved the homeless mugiwara-crew!
It was Franky that kind of said he was the captain of W7.
Does that mean I can start calling him Vampire Hunter U? Please?

Yes I felt the same way (and enjoyed the chapter immensly). I guess it was just right about time for some relaxed mugiwara fun after all this heavy drama stuff in W7-arc.

That sounds an awesome theory, Meh! Really, the connection makes sense… Hiruluk was sort of mad scientist and Hogbag sounds like other one too. Plus, Hiruluk had a mysterious, macabre style that Oda probably inspired him in Vincent Price.
Now the only point that has to be seen is about "The Shadow Thief"... Who will be him/her? Hogbag is a good guess, but I think The Shadow Thief can be other character, a guy based in Japanese folklore. If I not mistaken, Japan has all kind of ghouls and demons in its culture.
