Not really, it would seem kinda cliche to me…
And btw, Luffy said he wanted about ten PEOPLE, not ten nakama including the ship. We've still got two or three people left to go.

that's not for use to decide….. Luffy will be the one to decide.... and since he wanted a musician so badly....... are you expecting him to pass up this chance?
Actually, it's Oda who will be the one to decide.
If you want to know if a character qualifies as a Mary Sue, then take them through the test.

I don't really like the idea of a mermaid. I find it lame. Not saying mermaids ARE lame but the idea of one. Because what people are saying just keeps shoving Mary Sues into my head.
I'm going to yell at people on the 4Kids forums.
Why does 30+ automatically mean the hypothetical merwoman would be serious all the time? What about a 30 year old female mermaid who looks and acts like a young person?
And who's to say that there aren't rare occaisons in which girls younger than 30 can walk on land? I'm sure if Oda wanted to he could make a plot device like this.
And then there's the possibility of a Fish-woman who isn't ugly, and is based on a pretty looking fish.
Everyone seems to think:
-old = can't be a fun character (sans Franky)
-fishpeople = ugly and impossible to fit into crew
-we just got a new crewmember, we can't get another
Old people can indeed be fun and not serious (like Garp)
Oda could design an attractive fish-person if he so chose, OR he could throw in a really freaky looking one into the crew if you really wanted to.
We got the first 5 crew members all in a row. And once we entered the Grand Line Chopper and Robin both joined in arcs right after each other. (that's not even including Vivi, who did join for a little while) Another crew member in the next arc is most definately possible, AND considering the arc will probably be a couple years long we won't be having someone officially join for quite some time anyway.
Basically what I'm saying is, people need to stop thinking that "because of this logic this can't happen"
ANYTHING can happen if Oda chooses for it to happen, and any logic we might try to throw into the situation could very easily be kicked to the wayside by Oda.
As to the mermaid musician, I keep seeing Luffy staring into the 1000 Sunny's aquarium and saying:
Luffy: You'll be my musical slave. Forever!
You are way too knowledgable about '80 's cartoons if you get that reference.
DAMN IT! A pop culture reference I do not understand!
I think the musician would have to have another job of some sort. Since, you know, entertainment isn't as important as fighting off people who want your head.
An Inteligent girl more older than Chimmey can be a good Nakami if She is a god photographer.
Remember that they need to prove their dreams, Sanji for example cannot say that he has discovered the All Blue without a graphical explanation to the people and this is a photo.
And the girl trio could be perfectly matched with a Young Woman (Robin) a Teen Woman (Nami) and an Almost Woman (possible new member).
Not really. And the crew already has a musician, Franky.

Old He-man reference?
Dammit why do people assume Franky's a musician! He took out his guitar in one chapter and thats it! WAIT…They're all musicians. Remeber that lil short with the rainbow eels?
I wouldn't mind if they have another crew. If Oda can make us love a man wearing a speedo and a long nosed guy, why not!?
I think that would be a cool idea. They might not get another crewmate right away, but I definetly see them having a merman/woman in the crew sometime in the future. I mean c'mon…it would be really cool.
And why are so many people agains the idea of a FEMALE merman...are you opposed to the idea of their navigator being a woman? I believe it is 100% guaranteed for them to have another female on their crew by the time luffy gets 10 people.
I know he still needs a musician, but Franky is a musician too. Remember when he played his guitar really poorly. Basically, I think having a merman/woman will definetly happen sometime in the future, and if it IS a woman, that would make it all the more cooler.
well, don't know if Oda is hinting or not…. but that aquarium below the ship really does hint about something......

The aquarium was pointed out as a place to hold fish for future meals, I believe. They'd all like that - if people wanted to fish for fun, they could do that without letting the fish go to waste (i.e. Sanji wouldn't freak out over people wasting food). Though they've done fine without one so far, the crew and ship has gotten bigger (and more than likely the crew will continue to get bigger as well - the ship probably won't get bigger because that would directly interfere with Franky's dream too severely) so there are more mouths to feed (unless Franky eats differently because he's a cyborg but that seems unlikely).
Maybe they pick up a/the mermaid/man in a fishing net and they them in the aquarium later?
No… No... No, no, no, no, no, no... No. No way.
2 females = more then enough. If another female did join, that would be it abosoulte. Bellamy had three on his crew thats why I'm saying it.
I'm with you here. In fact, when Nami first joined the crew, I thought that's enough. That would make her special, being the only female, like Chopper being the only animal or Franky being the only cyborg. It was only when she fell sick that I realised that the crew needed 1 more female. Robin kinda fills that spot. So yeah 2 females is enough.
Mermaid: Cute but bottom half is a tail
Fishwoman: Entirely humaniod body but with an ugly face and other ugly features.
Yeah…I'll just go with another female member. A female musician.
a mermaid wouldn't be too bad. a mermaid i suppose would have a wonderfull voice. she could have a harp as an instrument.

Well, that's just a typical Mary Sue.
I wouldn't really care about another female, though I am a bit iffy about the matter. I trust Oda would manage it well though.
I read on Wikipedia that, even though they look better, woman on top isn't as good as woman on bottom.

What the hell are you two afraid of? A cootie outbreak?
No seriously. Whats the logic behind this? And please don't even bring up "target audience".
They're a relatively small crew, they need extremely powerful recruits. Robin and Franky fit that requirement, but how many really strong female characters have we seen yet?
I haven't seen any real strong female crewmembers yet (besides Robin). Nami does not count because we all know she is Squirrel Girl in disguise.
All the fangirls say:
"NO! Ace has to join! And he can play an electric guitar!! That would be HOT!!"
:P But really, I wouldn't mind if a fishwoman or a merwoman joined the crew, it'd just have to be for a very, very good reason, as with all the other Straw Hats.
Personally, I think it's too short of a distance between crew members; after all this character development, they should be all just too exhausted to go searching for more nakama.
'Cause that means clearing their pasts, cutting loose all their ties all over again… and although that's a very, very good thing when it happens, I don't think that's where the story is going at the moment.

too short for a distance between crewmembers is okay…
you know why? because it would have a lot of room for character development and more bonding time with the crew..
time wouldn't be a problem since it has been 150+ episodes b/w robin joining and franky joining..
(robin joined in 151? and i'm guessing franky will join in 300+)
imagine getting the remaining nakama with just a few arcs left in one piece.
what i'm saying here is the earlier the better..
more scenes (of course)
more adventure
more bonding
more everything!!!
as for a female merman/fishwoman ??? i do think they will get her in the next arc.. i'm also sticking with my theory that the musician will be the LAST to join- think about it --an irony bec. since the start luffy has been wanting for a musician to join.
i'm really curious on how they will go underwater since there are 3 devil fruit users in thier crew.
falls over laughing at the idea of Sanji and Luffy chasing and trying to eat a fishwoman
Believe me, if Sanji caught her he wouldn't be cooking her, he'd bring out the trusty paper bag and goto town.

You know, if Sanji actually met a woman that returned his affection, I think it'd create a time paradox and the universe would explode.

No seriously. Whats the logic behind this? And please don't even bring up "target audience".I admit that my fear is irrational. I am scared off by the descriptions of a prospective crewmember (Especially the female characters) in this thread. I have forgotten that Oda isn't influenced by them.
Off-topic: English isn't my native language. What's a "cootie"?I haven't seen any real strong female crewmembers yet (besides Robin). Nami does not count because we all know she is Squirrel Girl in disguise.
Strength doesn't matter. Chopper is a strong fellow, but his ability to fight has room for improvements. It's the overall fighting capability that's more important. That's how I see Robin btw.
It'd be pretty funny if the next nakama is a tone-deaf mermaid. Poor Luffy.

I don't even think we would get a new member on Merman island.
And for some reason I keep thinking of potatos and oil. Somethings missing…
