So far this manga has ended every chapter making us beg for more. That's why it's so great.
Akane-banashi

Good content, but I feel like the heavy hitters have yet to come. The next few chapters are bound to be interesting.
-
A cruel system indeed.
-
Good for you, Kaichi. Tell that traditionalist to fuck off.
-
Sometimes stupid fun is the best.
-
Great string of chapters. Kaichi rules, I'm rooting for him to win while Akane and Hikaru have their intertwined showdown.
-
So she became a rakugoka because of a grudge? How boring.
-
@Satsuki Isn't being rival because she was outshined clear enough?
-
Being a rival is obvious, but for her to say she took up rakugo ONLY because she got beat was a bit much.
-
Yuri vibes from the face touch, enemies to lovers style
Not gona lie that the writing always brings it home with me. I'm always excited to see what's next here
-
@Satsuki said in Akane-banashi:
Being a rival is obvious, but for her to say she took up rakugo ONLY because she got beat was a bit much.
Because she got beat BY Akane. She wants to prove herself just as much as Akane wants to prove herself to Issho.
It's not about being resentful, but having your personal drive in the form of a peer that can let you truly bloom.
And I think Hikaru's regional accent will play a huge role when it comes to her showing and tying her own acceptance of who she truly is, instead of masquerading her roots, to Akane's search of personal style while drawing from her father's craft.
Super excited, personally.
(and if we get enemies to lovers as a bonus I wouldn't get mad either...)

I seriously love the direction that this series is going. This is refreshing to a point that I can't really explain. Even in sports/craftsmanship manga that are highly rated, this attention to detail and focus on characters is rare and to make each of them feel like an actual real person gives me the impression that the author is very well versed in, for the lack of words, people and real life experience. There were signs of the rivals and side characters being given depth earlier but this cements where the author is going with his character writing. Really good work.
-
One thing I like is that, while not necessarily friends, most of the rakugoka are friendly with each other. No need to turn rivalries/competitions into hate.
-
At 93 points if Akane wins it will feel forced.
-
I doubt Akane is gonna win
-
I'm praying for It to end on a tie, now that Kaichi is out of the running
-
There are too many "she's going to lose because of her choice" flags.
Now, I am expecting that she will win and will surprise Michael and her Master with her interpretation of her dad's Rakugo.
-
It's crazy how the story seems to play her father figure in the same way they would talk about a dead person. he's just a salaryman now!!! is it a case of Dead in the Eyes of Art???
-
Now you mention it, have we even seen him on panel (other than in a flashback) after he was evicted from the Arakawa school ?
-
Akane mentioned that she has a good relationship with his father but they avoid Rakugo altogether. He's aware of what she's doing but doesn't support or oppose her. So in a way, it's the same as if he's dead for the manga's purpose (for now).
-
-
Far, far worse than death. Any Japanese will confirm.
-
well, next chapter we ought to see what's Akane made of. Probably a Stand-like ability, in oposition to two Domain Expansions in a row
-
Akane's nin has the proprieties of both rubber and gum.
-
I think she'll win because if she loses she'll have to fight against rookies again. I mean sure we aren't going by shounen battle tier here but she's looking to move up the food chain and we really want to see more characters up in the ranking instead of introducing more rookies again. The only way she is going to win, however, is come to her own conclusion about her father's ability and has already found closure in the fact that her father's rakugo wasn't that good and use that new found wisdom to her advantage. There can be two ways this will turn out: either we have an arc after this which she does do so and become her own person, or she has already done so and it will be shown in a flashback when her performance is happening.
-
The question is: is it possible to get a tie in this scenario?
-
Is she finally gonna fumble?!?!? Ngl I was afraid to swipe to the next page when it looked like she froze. I love this manga so much.
-
Any series about competitions or crafts should have a fumble once in a while.
-
It's hard sometimes to admit when someone you love isn't as great as you want them to be.
-
Hmmm I'm leaning toward akane getting better judge scores but ultimately losing out by a small margin in the audience score.
Good chapter.
-
weak chapter. Hope next one is better. If she loses, then yeah this chapter is justified. If she wins, this is probably the weakest chapter we've had.
-
It's fine to be weak. It's just another flavor of the human experience.
-
Really enjoyed the chaper, although now I don't care anymore whether she wins or not. You know how the saying goes, it's all about the journey and this confrontation with her dad's art entertained me more than whatever will come out of the competition. At one point it seemed she was going to cast aside her rose-tinted childhood memories and as a grown-up Rakugoka look down on him, but what she did instead is much more endearing.
-
I like the messaging and the overall theme, this chapter just pales in comparison with the other 2 rookies which was really well done. It's still good, just not a winning kind of good.
-
I guess it's kinda like how your mom's cooking won't win any Michelin stars, but it tastes good to you because it's your mom's.
-
I would say Akane takes it one step further and also manages to make others experience the taste of her mom's cooking and feel the same about it (or really her dad's Rakugo, but the cooking analogy works well)
-
I want Akane to win only for the VA gets more yandere
-
Maybe a minor grip, but I wouldn't have used "weak". Exposing yourself while being honest and not being able to put a perfectly crafted facade is being vulnerable, not weak. And that's what we should be searching more in art, more vulnerable and personal approaches to forge a proper style, even when it comes to a performing art that seems as rigid and tradition-based as rakugo.
I really hope that Akane can be vulnerable in her own way.
-
Yeah but I also don't enjoy the X factor because people get in due to their sob story. Or college admissions letting people in if they have enough of a well-crafted sob story that showed they overcame the odds. Look, everyone have their own shit going on but still choose to commit themselves to a craft. The answer lies in the nuances and how subtle you can show your vulnerability and experience without it defining you as a person. Akane should and is doing this because frankly, she realized her father's craft was simply not good enough but does not insist on believing otherwise just because he did and instead took it as a learning lesson on human vulnerability. This has little to do with exposing your vulnerability on stage but rather doubling down on vulnerability as a key trait of the spectacle. It is relatable because people can be weak, so that can be therefore, capitalized on to win (or better your performance). This is the key difference, you utilize and draw on every experience you have, someone close to you has, or what you have engaged in and for a good craftsman, all of them are tools simply to win and better yourself.
The message is not about showing your weakness to everyone or putting your vulnerability and personal life out on display when you are expected to deliver a quality performance. Japan has always been the contrast of whatever the fuck contestants have been pulling over at X factor or whatever. The craft is first and foremost, your tragedy serves only to further your craft. I'm also not disagreeing with what you say, I get what you mean, that she should not be a Mary Sue character and should be vulnerable for a good story. But that's for the story and for the backstage and to occur inside her own mental hubris, but not for the stage. No one gets to the top of anything by the display of their vulnerabilities, and if they do they never stay for long.
-
I get what the judges say about Akane, but I found the story itself really bad and messy so it's hard to relate to their praise.
-
Amazing end of a chapter. She's definitely getting the best scores from the judges.
Still leaning that she will win. Plot-wise, to maintain a semblance of rivalry with Kaisei, I can't see her losing now and not be in the front of the other rakugoka of her current rank. After reaching Futatsume would be a better point for introducing "losses" IMO.
