Interesting. Now to see how she gets out of this corner...
Has the manga officially gone biweekly by the way, or are we still in the aftermath of the end year period ? After checking there were 2 weeks between each of the last 3 chapters and I see the next will be early march.
-
@Seafarer33 Kn8's been biweekly for about what? A year now? not including that month break we got back in December. You can look at all the dates listed alongside the Viz chapters. No announcement of any sort as far as I'm aware; it just kind of happened.
-
@QueenTangerine3 Thanks. I had somehow convinced myself they were on an Oda-style pace (3 chapters / 1 break), but how you describe it makes more sense.
-
This post is deleted!

That's the complete opposite of Bojack Horseman's Free Churros episode now that I think about it.
-
Fuck.
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1015538Kinda like when illnesses mutate to overcome our current immune systems. Then we have to wait for our immune systems to catch up and/or get a new vaccine/med designed for it. Ahh, COVID.
-
Makes sense considering that they were engineered by number nine who is basically a virus.
-
A little unexpected focus, but yeah, time for #8 to take the stage.
-
I have to admit, I spent the whole chapter wondering why we are focusing on this nobody. These 2 characters were never on my radar before and one hastily-put-together flashback isn't enough to create emotional weight as far as I'm concerned.
Which may be unfair to her and captain Whoever she is ardently trying to support here, but now we're at it I would rather follow each of the major fights to their conclusion. Seeing Kafka in action can wait until later on, or he could have interneved for one of his buddies instead - at least he would be trying to help someone I have reason to care about and that would make the scene more engaging.
-
I actually think coming to save two nobodies is a better idea. The others are supposed to be some of the best fighters and they have numbered kaiju powers. Let them overcome the odds and evolve as characters without it being undermined by Kafka saving them again.
-
@PatTraverse rationally I agree on this - it's better if the others can fend for themselves, and very much in Kafka's character to help those who actually need it because he himself spent most of his life on the weaker end of the spectrum. But emotionally, the duo here has not had any notable panel time that would have stuck with me, so I don't feel at all invested in their saving. I would have prefered if the flashback we saw could have been sprinkled over the course of the story, making these 2 actual fleshed out characters that I could care for even if they're weaker, rather than as a last-minute addition in the very chapter they need saving.
Although I'll admit there is probably some subjectivity at work here. If I were to re-read the whole manga, maybe it would turn out they do have decent screentime but not the flashy kind unlike the main cast, so who knows it could be I'm just biased.
-
One punch Kafka.

I love this manga. For the monster designs if nothing else:

Woo! Go, girl!

#9 shows himself to be even more of an asshole.

Can old versions win?

I'm still following, but somehow the grace is gone. Maybe because we've spent a while without Kafka and the series reverted to pure Shonen. Initially I liked how well-built the world was, that there was a whole industrial ecosystem that thrived on the processing of monster carcasses. And that the underdog hero was one of these looked-down crew, who on top of this had to hide his powers from public knowledge.
But nowadays, it's just typical Kaiju with a hint of martial arts and ass-pulled power-ups (albeit well executed), so my interest is dwindling.
Possibly the current cultivated-monsters arc is what started it all. The stakes were high at the start, with #9 seizing the body of the chief Isaho, and I very much liked the human side of Kafka & co being conflicted over fighting him. But it all took a backseat and now I'm getting tired with the battle
-
We have been very low on Kafka lately. That's not good.
-
It's because we have had multiple fights involving a hero living the same scenario.
-Hero gets his or her ass kicked badly
-They reminisce about the past and a figure they aim to surpass
-The hero shows tremendous growth because they want to surpass said figure
-WinBut i am not bothered because it takes a lot these days for me to really be invested in a series. I know all too well that they usually devolve after a certain point and just become a lot more generic.
-
@PatTraverse said in Monster 8:
-Hero gets his or her ass kicked badly
-They reminisce about the past and a figure they aim to surpass
-The hero shows tremendous growth because they want to surpass said figure
-WinThird fight following this path, it certainly didn't help.
-
Slice and dice!
-
Okay, #10 has won me over as a character.
-
Besties for life!
-
Niiiiiice. (note: you have to turn on the cc if you want English)
Of course they only give us the tiniest bit of Kaiju Kafka. Little teases make us want more. And watching this reminds me of something I thought at the beginning: if kaiju keep showing up, why do they bother making big building above ground all the time? Seems safer to mostly live underground or at least with low buildings.
-
Would building underground make sense in Japan? It's a volcanic country with a history of seismic activity.
-
Hmmm, good point. Harder to do on an island, especially a Circle of Fire island. Still wonder though if they should be making buildings THAT tall.
-
Can we all agree that #10 is the best kaiju?
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1018449Not including Kafka in this, as I consider him separate from the others.
-
Zoro would be proud
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1018817 -
It's the best recent fight by far all thanks to a talking suit.
-
For sure. I can't remember when we last saw Kafka and the focus on this specific fight was honestly starting to feel long, but the dynamic with #10 more than makes up for it.
-
Hoshina twist
-
Are we ever going to learn where she got the tiger?
-
Well, add one more thing to the Akira bike slide chart.
-
Oh, hey, look: the author remembered Mina is a character who can have inner thoughts.
-
A much-needed little Mina flashback. Still no explanation for the tiger though.
-
So that explains why we only ever see her shooting big guns. It was (is?) the only thing she really really excelled at.
-
What I'm a little confused about is whether she's making the guns shoot so hard, or if she's just really good at handling them.
-
We see her at the firing range with other soldiers and her damage output was clearly superior. Only being really good at handling an assault rifle won't suddenly turn it into a cannon that can shoot through multiple layers of concrete.
-
Hmm, guess they haven't discussed the function of the suits well enough to describe how they power guns. Or I'm completely forgetting it.
-
Same here: if they did, it didn't leave a lasting impression. My mental image of the suits is that they give you a badass factor the more power you're able to draw from them, with elite troops being granted the privilege (or curse ?) to work with unique mega-monster gear. If memory serves right we saw Kafka's buddy shoot freezing bullets, so we know at least the suits can affect gun power output.
-
The suits definitely give you more speed and strength the more power you use. But I think it's only the numbered monster suits that give them special powers.
-
FUCK.
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1018939#14 is definitely the weirdest monster we've seen so far. But at the end it says "The Final Wave". What, does this mean the series is ending?!
-
I could see it happen. We haven't seen Kafka in a while when his perspective on the story was the most engaging as far as I'm concerned, and aside from the comic relief suit duo, other fights haven't really set me on fire.
