Agree, the movie is doing pretty good so far. Film Red is already doing better then the US release of the anime film, Belle from earlier this year.

Thursday is combined with Friday results usually but it's still going to have a better or on par opening with MHA's recent film
Good results!
Good to hear. Was I just misunderstanding how popular MHA is in the states? I thought it was huge. Really surprised the movie for it didn’t do that well.
-
@Zephray Its definitely popular but i feel that its popularity has dropped off over the years after All Might retired from being a hero.

Pretty sure that movie was in FAR LESS SCREENS, HAD FAR LESS SHOWINGS and WASNT PROMOTED NEARLY AS MUCH so I wouldn’t call that a win honestly lmao.
Although if it was then..: that is odd since I too thought My Hero was massive in the states.

Dude. Calm down.
-
What? I’m not yelling and I am calm. Lol I just used capitol letters to make sure you guys knew the key differences. Y’all really gotta stop trying to read between the lines and just focus on what’s being said. Y’all treat this forum too much like you’re talking to someone in real life. It’s not that serious.
-
Not surprising... Roman is overreacting again. The movie is doing fine.
-
Lmao I logged out just because I was curious and I see that Skippy, Sano and JustAGuy all blocked me just so they can talk shit about me behind my back. Real classy, guys. But just know I can see everything. Noted.
-
Crunchyroll seems to be happy with how Film Red is doing so far.
-
Well would you look at that
-
I know Rotten tomatoes isn't important but Film RED has and 95% Critic and Audience scores so far, that's pretty awesome
Me and my nephew had a great time watching the movie!
-
Huh. The mute function is interesting. Someone could be having a conversation with you in the forum and you don’t even see it. Weird. Looks like JustaGuy blocked/muted me too.
-
So glad to see the movie doing well me and my nephews really enjoyed it , all the viewers were into the movie
-
So with at the very least 40 plus theaters missing from the total, its probably at 4.8 million plus.
-
Okayyy, so I saw the movie a second time and decided to write up my more thorough thoughts, for anyone who cares to read them. Since I know some folks on this forum are super anti-negativity and don't like hearing criticism, I've stuck my thoughts in a spoiler bracket so they can easily ignore them, and, you know, there are also legit movie spoilers herein.
I think everyone should go support the film in the states by going to see it and by making your own opinion. My general dislike of this particular film, which for me is one of the worst of the last five, won't stop me from seeing it multiple times and purchasing the bluray. It's still a fun time, mostly, but I do think there are a lot of issues and it doesn't mesh with my personal/subjective directorial preferences.
(For my second showtime, there were eight people at the IMAX, all wearing OP shirts, one wearing a Franky wig. I sat in the back so I wasn't as overwhelmed as my first viewing. very curious if the film was cropped to fit the IMAX aspect ratio, and I wonder if a wider screen would change my thoughts at all. Probably not.)
Favorite films in order:
-
Strong World. Great pacing, strong emotions, felt like a short OP arc. Adventure, comedy, action. Everything. Felt the most "OP" of any film. Shiki's accomplices were a bit annoying, but I don't really have any complaints for this film. It's the perfect OP movie for me, and McNeil always blows me out of the water when I listen to him voice Shiki.
-
Film Z. Compelling villain. Quieter pacing/story. Character focused. Great colors and animation style. It doesn't have the fun-loving comedy-adventure feel to it that SW does; that's my personal preference kicking in. Film Z is probably the best script of them all.
-
Stampede. The back half of the film devolves into "let's fight this giant enemy," (which RED also devolves into, though with more heart), but the first half is so much damn fun, beautiful scenery and cameos, and I personally like this cast of characters better here than other films. Smoker, Hancock, Sabo, Bart, Law, and others. There are some highs in this film that really win for me (Bullet v Supernovas, Hancock attack, etc.), and the first half I like better than anything in Film Red.
-
Red. Overwhelming. Filled with plotholes and effectively a long pitch for Ado. But great music, a mostly compelling (though at times confusing) antagonist, and you never get bored.
-
Gold. I have to admit to liking this one least, even though its others' favorite. I have fun with the first half; it feels like a OP adventure, and the luck-luck fruit with Luffy is fun. Tesoro isn't a great villain, but he's serviceable. For me, the second half of the film is just boring and tedious, the caper plotline predictable. I turn it off once it introduces the Texas cliche character underground, and the Sabo/Lucci inclusion feels extraneous.
Any friendly thoughts on all this without attacking me for posting criticism? What are y'all's in-order list of films?

Woot woot! Glad they're also thinking about it in terms of growth / outperforming itself instead of only competition.
-
@Zephray I enjoyed it, it's definitely not my favorite. I've only seen the movies since Strong World, I personally put it behind Strong World, Gold, Z, and Stampede. Uta and here Sing Sing powers and music was great, but the demon lord aspect was meh.
As for the audio, I didn't notice any issues. The audio in my local Theater was amazingly clear.
As great as Ado's music is, I'd have preferred Amalee to sing In the movie

Yeah, I agree. And maybe it was the IMAX sound playing a factor in the audio. Glad to hear it sounded good over there. I might see it in an Alamo next week if it’s still playing, so maybe it’ll be better there.
And agreed about the random demon lord (is there such a thing as hell in OP? Lol.). I think it would’ve been more emotionally affecting if they were fighting her with her armor, but like a super version of her because of the weird magical item.

Watched Film Red.
There was like 4 other people in my theater so… whatever. I’m done complaining about OP’s lack of relevance here. Onto the movie review!
So, I give it a 8/10. I really enjoyed and it was entertaining from start to finish. It felt like a movie to me, where as some of the other OP movies (and shonen movies in general) often feel like elongated episodes - so that’s definitely a plus for me.
My only complaints was that the ending was way too abrupt and didn’t make a “certain incident” too clear. Didn’t like that we didn’t see Luffy’s reaction to it either. Kinda felt that something was missing.
Also, took my daughter and while she largely liked it, she wasn’t a fan of most of the songs being condensed from their full versions. Lmao - go figure, everyone is complaining there was too much music, while she wanted all the music to be sang in full. Lol love my kid, always against the grain.
But yeah, definitely my favorite anime movie release this year. DBS SuperHero was very meh and had awkward CGI while Jujutsu Kaisen 0 just felt like several episodes stitched together. Same with Demon Slayer Mugen Train. And My Hero Academia World Heroes Mission was just boring and felt like filler. This is definitely my favorite of the more recent Crunchyroll releases.
Hope it rocks it this weekend and gets a BO of over $10 Mil. C’mon One Piece. You can do this!!
-
From what I saw on seat reservations at my local theater, the sub showings got far more attendance than the dub showings. My 10:30 PM dub showing had maybe 20 people in attendance. Mostly younger folks who wouldn't SHUT UP during the movie.
I was actually surprised at how many times a day Red was airing at my theater. For an anime movie, this was perhaps the most showings in a single day of anything in recent memory.
As for the movie itself, it was all right. It was a bit jarring for Uta to suddenly be singing in Japanese. I honestly may be tiring of the whole "let's pack as many random characters into one movie!" shtick.
--Random character appears--
--Says catch phrase----Audience laughter--
Like...why were Blueno and Kalifa even in this movie? Was this Oda's way of confirming that all original members of CP9 are now in CP0? We haven't seen Fukurou or Kumadori yet, but by now, we'd have to assume that they're still around.
Aside from Randy Pearlman, did they recast some of the Five Elders again?
EDIT - Sandman on Oda regarding Blueno and Kalifa:
-
I hope in the next movie, the other Straw Hats are more involved and they cut back on some of the secondary characters like Kalifa, Lucci, the Elders and others that had no real impact on the plot.
-
@MooseAP Maybe a little more of Luffy's thoughts in the post credits?
-
@G1Ravage said in Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ):

I was curious about this (since at least one of them sounded nothing like how they did in their previous appearance), so I did check their last credited appearance (episode 511) to see if any of the actors in the “additional cast” were carried over from that episode:
https://i.imgur.com/QSYZn4l.jpg
There are 5 actors who were listed in both, though at least 1 of these actors doesn’t seem to fit the bill, as he has already acknowledged his role in the film on social media (
)
So there are at 4 actors here who could have been previous actors for these characters (with one definitely being Randy Pearlman, as he has been the only one who has ever confirmed that he voiced one). At least 1 probably had an actor switch since. In general they haven’t been able to keep the actors for these guys 100% consistent throughout the series
-

Just something, anything. Lol.
-
So i see on the crunchyroll PC browser people can actually comment under the episodes they watch on there, a really neat future
-
You guys remember when Luffy fought an air vent for fifteen minutes in a big budget film?
-
@Zephray Oh do you mean in Film Gold when when they’re trying to make their way to the bottom of the Tesoro? Lmao… yeah that whole part with that and Raise Max was lame.
-
Film Gold is actually my favorite. The way I see it with these movies is I want to see something we could never get in the story proper and a casino heist/ rescue fits the bill. Yeah the fan part is the weakest section, but the rest of the setting and visuals makes up for that for me. It’s just fun!
-
I thought that Red was a solid film, and one of the better One Piece movies with Strong World still being on top. The story was strong and Uta's bonkers powers make it visually and tonally stand out from the rest of the franchise, not to mention the songs are incredible. I agree that it was a bit too chaotic though, and I don't know how many shots I missed by trying to read the subtitles. I think the plotting let the film down as well; everything surrounding Tot Musica revolved around a massive coincidence, and the way that certain information was revealed made it needlessly hard to keep track of what the characters were reacting to (see spoilers).
FWIW, this one won't work for non-fans. Not just because of the unexplained powers, but also because the manga's story is thematically important and not recapped. I would also recommend the anime's two prologue episodes to anyone who hasn't seen them, as for once they actually enhance the movie.
My semi-serious plan of inserting the English songs into the dub is scuppered as well, as it turns out that one of the songs is markedly different to the single version.
-
It’s weird you felt that way, because many outlets are saying that this a great movie to introduce to those not in the know with OP. And it seems many people on Twitter who don’t particularly watch/read OP still liked the film and said it was easy to follow even without watching the show.
-
@MooseAP I mean, it's hard to image that you don't know something so maybe I'm overselling it, but Uta is only a foil for the Straw Hats if you know their history, which isn't even alluded to in the film. But I guess with the powers and such the gist can be worked out from context. (I remember introducing some friends to OP with movie 9, and the only thing that confused them was why everyone kept talking about the Log Pose - though that one seemed written for newcomers).
Conspiracy time: AmaLee's music video credits the lyrics to Brina Palencia, and yet Ado's own video from June uses the same English lyrics in its closed captions. Presumably, those lyrics were written for Crunchyroll's dub and then became the official English lyrics, effectively using dubtitles from a dub that never got released?
-
Looks like Film Red is projected to get $9.4mil this weekend. Really wanted it to surpass $10mil. I know it did much better than Stampede, but Stampede was a much smaller release so that’s only natural.
Well, as long as it’s growing in popularity… i dunno, I just really wish it was able to match Jujutsu Kaisen 0 more… sigh… I better get ready for the mocking on twitter. Goddamn it, yo.
-
You’re moving the goal post on your own desires so that you can be disappointed.
-
I didn’t think it would be able to match Dragon Ball or even Demon Slayer. But I really thought it had a shot to match Jujutsu Kaisen. It’s genuine disappointment.
At this rate, Spy x Family and Chainsaw Man would probably beat OP with their first outings as well, if they ever get one.
-
@MooseAP said in Funimation DVD Discussion IV (Please Check First Post for FAQ):
@Zephray lmao if you’re not sure how it compares, why would you say good numbers.
Combined with its Thursday showing, that’s about 6 million… so… honestly it might make even lower than the estimated 9 million weekend thing they reported unless it somehow makes more on Sunday, which I doubt.
Looks like it's doing better than even you thought. Try being optimistic for once. The numbers are fine. It warrants future releases and didn't bomb.
-
I guess.
-
You really oughta be happy it's doing this well rather than acting like this, willingly setting yourself up for disappointment. It did better than My Hero's latest film, a series that is indeed very popular in the US, I don't care how many more theaters it had in comparison they were both similar releases at a similar time in the year and did around the same ballpark. Crunchyroll and Toei are happy, so I really just think you had your expectations in the wrong place man. At the end of the day too, what grip does Twitter have on you to be so ready for people to mock you that you were dreading it? Anime fandoms on there are packed full of teenagers and young kids who screech mid and pick fights with each other over stupid nonsense everyday and no life it, it's not the real world.
-
When you read reports like -
“OP failed to reach the $10mil weekend goal we originally predicted. It’s on the lower end of Crunchyroll’s releases, usually they do better. It’s clear this isn’t as popular as most of Crunchyroll’s other outings” -
from official box-office reporting news outlets, then yeah… it doesn’t make me feel good.
OP is always behind here compared to its shonen brothers, old and new. And I hate that.
-
@MooseAP You care too much about box office analysts who somehow expect every Crunchyroll film to gross that much like who cares when the company was happy just as is with it's opening day alone? Shouldn't be such a thing to obsess over, it's not healthy
-
@Skippy you guys will never understand. You’re fine with mediocre results because quite frankly you don’t know how the movie box-office world works. Or how business works when handling IPs. All y’all know is OP and how it compares to itself. You’re completely out of touch with what really makes a good box-office and how they decide that compared to others.
Y’all just see “HEY! It did better than stampede! That’s great!”
It’s so so so much more than that.
-
@MooseAP Alright you weirdo, go have a mental breakdown while Crunchyroll ends up being happy with the results again cause guess what, they compared it with a gasps previous film in the series like everyone else did. Go have a panic attack somewhere else and stop ruining the fun
-
@Skippy stop insulting me, I’ve already told you this once. Don’t make me repeat myself. Go back to muting me and insulting me behind my back like the quality of human you are.
-
@MooseAP Stop obsessing over numbers literally everywhere has called strong then lmao, I do not care
-
Oh word, you don’t care? Bet.
Let’s see how long you last in this forum with that outlook. Just remember I’m not breaking the rules, the one flaming is.
-
I don't think anyone here was expecting a relatively niche genre of media in America to be doing Avengers Endgame numbers.
-
@MooseAP I've lasted here 6 long years buddy, I think I'm good, keep seething lmao
-
@Skippy Keep that attitude, I’ve been nothing but respectful but since you don’t agree with my negative outlook you have to get offensive. You will be dealt with as with any forum when someone gets offensive. And I should know.
-
@Johnny-B-Decent Surely, Roman just refuses to compare One Piece to itself and a literally other popular franchise in North America that's performing the same at the box office lmfao
