The Elusive Samurai

Might wanna rename the thread to “The Elusive Samurai” as it’s called in both Viz and MangaPlus so people can make that connection without having to look into this thread
It’s a good start so far, I’m interested
-
I thought it was just with Assassination Classroom, but I guess the author likes smol feminine or ambiguous male leads.
I'm gonna need a few more chapters to be able to remember names correctly
-
I wonder if the girl with the halberd is Tomoe Gozen.
-
-
Good first chapter. Intrigued to see how it develops.
One impression I immediately got is that even if it succeeds, it doesn't seem to be made to be a long manga. Future developments might change my mind.
-
Here's the MangaPlus version:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1008826Definitely more shades of Neuro than Assassination Classroom, but it's historical fiction so it's all good. Might wanna go brush up on The Clear Mirror (Masukagami), a Genji-like tale written about the court of Emperor Go-Toba.
-
Good start overall. Nothing surprising so far, Mr NiceGuy was an obvious candidate for rebellion, but there can be value in how the protagonists overcomes future trials. We'll see…
-
something about the panelling and thick lines and astro boy esque format shouts out to me.
I hope this will be fun -
Sounds fun, let's see where the ride leads.

This priest is gonna be the death of us:

I still get "this priest is gonna molest the shota" vibes but let's see where it goes…
-
Honestly, I'm not feeling this as much as Assassination Classroom, but I'm willing to give it a few more chapters to see if it pick up.
-
DEFINITELY more Neuro than Assassination Classroom:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1008830AC never made me go "eeeeeeek!!" when I read it.
-
I didn't expect to see supernatural elements in this but I'm glad we're going there, should make things more interesting.
-
Reminds me of those Boars from Princess Mononoke. (Local Japaneses from the 11th century can't tell apart a boar from an ox apparently.)
DEFINITELY more Neuro than Assassination Classroom:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1008830AC never made me go "eeeeeeek!!" when I read it.
Also AC never had the author to show brutally murdered animals on panels as far as I remember. (Thank god, it wasn't a dog.)

I mean, the first chapter did have a child being decapitated.
-
I wasn't aware that male ticks get that big, but the dorsal shield size seems accurate.
-
shudders I hate ticks.
Obsidian shows up in LOTS of fantasy stories as a mineral that can be used to kill supernatural beings. I guess it really is special. And yes, it can get sharp as shit.
-
I'm not really enjoying this story yet. I'm still waiting for it to get interesting. Each chapter feels super short to me. I'm not sure why since the cast is chatty.
-
Yo Matsui. What the F-
-
Dog shooting? No no no no no, fuck no.
The sad thing is though this kind of thing DID exist back in medieval Japan. Once I was reading a few short stories from back then and one was about a monk called the Sagami Novice holding dog fighting. For being a monk he was rather hedonistic.
All I can say is: BEAT THE CRAP OUT OF THIS DICK.
-
Well, at least it didn't focus on shooting dogs:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009000 -
The arrows transforming into a baseball and a bullet train to represents the speed of the shot despite said objects not existing in Japan at the time was a nice touch.
Reminds me how Matsui used allegories in AC like transforming a high school test into a deathmatch arena.
-
Shoot the fucker:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009001Nothing like the wonderful schadenfreude that is seeing assholes handed their asses to them.
-
Eh, I think I'm done with this series. Sorry, I just don't think it's that interesting.
-
Yep. this series will not cut for me.
-
I'll give it a little longer. Although so far it's definitely not Assassination Classroom.
It might also be one of those series where it's a lot better if you give it several chapters and read them in one go, rather than week by week.
-
By contrast, I've gotten used to the characters and pacing after being lost in the first chapters. I also accepted that it has a Japanese trivia gag that will be lost to me almost every chapter, but it's no big deal.
-
Okay, that was funny:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009128It could use another character with more detail to him.
-
Ok I really liked the turn at the ending. Nothing spectacular or groundbreaking but it connected with me somehow.^^
-
I kinda wished the other kids got some development first before adding a new one.
-
I'm getting real tired of Sir Bug-Eyes. But Genba is a much needed addition. I'm actually laughing and getting interested:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009129 -
I think there will be a third guy with a really big nose.
-
And one with a giant mouth.
-
I don't even want to imagine what of tricks the guy with a godlike sense of touch is going to pull
-
You guys called it. It's Big Ear guy:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009130Interesting that he's a servant/soldier and not a lord himself.
-
Genba truly is a welcome addition to the party and the series as a whole:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009270Also our first glimpse of the Emperor behind all this.
-
The emperor has shone through the same courtain a few times, when he gave a character of his name to whatshisname the treacherous lord.
So weird that a jump manga is managing to get away with hinting at the emperor. One Piece had do do the whole thing up to shoguns, just as gintama and the other meiji period series that shall not be named, who did mention the political change of the period, but didn't say anything about the person or character.

Here, page 2: https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1008830
Way less presence than on this one, but I think that he showed up another time as well.

https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009000 lol, another one panel and one extremelly mundane phrase apareance.
-
Oh yeah, forgot about that. Go-Daigo was a real emperor (as this is all based on history), but I don't remember anything about him other than this war.
-
The more of Ashikaga we see, the more I wonder how Lovecraft-ian this is going to get:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009271 -
lol. This series is really starting to find it's funny bone:

lol. This series is really starting to find it's funny bone:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009272So true. First time I laughed out loud with it. Worried Yorishige is a great mix of funny and creepy.
-
I also thought the humor was great in this chapter. Re-reading this again, I just noticed that the new thief enemy's clothing has ants. Are they just a pattern or are they literally crawling on him? (So disgusting…)
-
I think they are live ants. Bleh.
-
Ewww, blood.
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009273 -
Hojo is a fire emblem player who has seen a talkable enemy unit.
-
The trio of pages where he realises they had been going easy on him in training made me laugh out loud, especially the middle one.
-
Pretty sure that's not how Buddhism works:
https://mangaplus.shueisha.co.jp/viewer/1009445 -
If nothing else, this series has a plethora of creepy, awful villains:
