! Well the guard rail gave way for the way of single security guard. That's more of an OSHA violation than Hop Pop killing the dude.

So I honored my ancestors and watched Mulan. It was good. Not great. Gorgeous cinematography and great martial arts (especially the horse stunts!) but sorely lacking in character development. Shang should never have been split into two characters, no matter how awesome Donnie Yen is, and we never properly learn the names of Mulan's friends. Turning Crik-ee into a boy named Cricket was a clever move though.
Also Mushu. Damn this movie needed some Mushu.
-
Also watched Mulan. Yes, it was good. Not great. I don't really remember much from the animated one, only seen it once, so I can't really talkabout that they made better or worse. It's a perfectly fine film. A few things to point out though:
- There this scene in the beginning with the emperor, where this soldier says something like, "The woman uses witchcraft" or something. And one of the emperor's men then says, "Witchcraft is forbidden in these lands. She cannot be a witch!". And she gives a damn that it's forbidden …?
- I'm always put off when I watch Chinese films (yes, this is Disney) and people all of a sudden start doing unrealistic things. The Mongolians were running up and down castle walls! Though maybe magic, dunno.
- Mulan's village looked weird.
An issue that I have with a lot of films in general is that they feel small. Aladdin felt small. The city felt small, every set felt small. I never felt the grandness of the city. In Mulan too. And I get it. They build the set. They would otherwise would have needed to use CGI to make a bigger set.

I have a police against this cash grabs live action remakes, so I'm taking the other side. As I have not nor will watch it, i bring arguments from someone that has:

Hey, I loved Mulan's village. It reminded me of the apartments in Kung Fu Hustle.
Now that's an amazing movie.

Here's another.

Just discovered this animator.
! Don't know why, but Koda getting randomly snatched by an eagle is the funniest damn thing to me.

This post is deleted!

Soul is getting good early buzz/reviews, which is always neat for an original IP, but I can't help but be annoyed at the common gushing over how "real" it looks, how "it almost seems like Live Action!!". Its a cartoon! Why do we want our cartoons to be photoreal? A cartoon can be literally anything!
-
Daz my mate, for the Hollywood optics for any form of animation to be considered art is has to be photo realistic or else is just a bunch of drawings designed to sell toys for children.
-

Real in how the characters are portrayed? cause there's nothing real about the character designs or animation.

I get what you're feeling frustrated about, like a lot of people act like 3D animation is an evolution to replace that old 2D animation and it always pisses me off. Like a friend of mine once said (I forget what it was referring to now) "I don't understand why they're taking a step backwards and using 2D" and I about bit his head off, lol. They're two different valid forms of art that achieve different aesthetics.

Soul is going to be releasing on Disney+ for free. Seems the experiment of charging 30$ for Mulan on top of the subscription fee did not go well.
-
Charging for Mulan was partly to milk as much money as they could out of China. And to make up for all the theaters they couldn't play in.
But yeah, better to show for free if you're already paying for Disney+.

You mean charging $30 for a not very good live action adaptation on top of the subscription fee did not go well. All in all doesn't necessarily mean they won't try again gotta offset those layoffs somehow which technically they don't have to do because why reduce exorbitant budgets and pay when you can reduce the workforce.

New Raya trailer.
! The conbaby feels like a really bizarre concept, but the rest looks good.
-
Wow that looks at lot more manic and ironic than I expected. I'd have loved to see what a more sincere take on this world, this story would've been like but this ….feels a bit try hard, a bit like they're worried you'll get bored or think its too serious. Sigh.
-
The last trailer had me worried that this movie could end up being similar to Brave…a movie whose trailer sold one thing but the movie ended up being something else entirely.
With this trailer, it’s still adhering to the epic quest more than I expected. I also knew Aquafina was gonna be the voice of the dragon so that didn’t throw me off too much, but I’m getting more of a Dreamsworks vibe if anything from the trailer, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing (and not HHTYD trailers, any other trailers from the studio, Kung Fu Panda is probably closest?) At least I’m more confident the trailer is selling what to expect vs an Asian Brave situation, but still.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Coin flip how I feel about the main character still vibing the woke girl attitude. There’s just been a lot of backlash from Disney about it lately between Mulan and Rei and Captain Marvel. On the other hand, I’m pumped for a strong female lead for this kind of adventure, and it helps play off against what seems will be goofier companions.
-
I was really interested in seeing Disney do their Avatar take after the first trailer. And it LOOKS gorgeous.
Not feeling that second trailer at all though.

The animation/design/action/music all looks FABULOUS. The story? We'll have to see, I'm not 100% into it yet.
-
Oh nice! My favorite web reviewers covers one of my favorite movies.
I've seen this movie more time than I can count… and I never thought about Pudge the Fish that way. Damn.

So two things I learned today:
1-Disney is shutting down Blue Sky Studios.
2-They were about to release a adaptation of Nimona in 10 months.

Not cool, Disney. Not cool.

Looks like the free market of capitalism is at it again, promoting creativity and competitiveness
But how about that
! Wandavision cameo eh? Eh? All these layoffs and increased monopolization is alllllll worth it
-
Just re-watched The Great Mouse Detective on Plus, and damn it really is an under-appreciated classic. Vincent Price as Ratigan is one of the best Disney villains ever, but I love Basil almost as much. More people need to see this if they haven't already.

I have feeling that Disney xd might be shutting down soon. Since Big Hero 6 and Ducktales are finishing up their remaining episodes, while the only show that will be airing new episodes is Beyblade. Also Disney being shutting down several countries version of Disney xd the last several months.

HEY GUYS YOU KNOW WHICH DISNEY VILLAIN WE SHOULD HAVE AS HAVING A PREQUEL NEXT
THAT'S RIGHT
THE WOMAN WHO LITERALLY FUCKING SKINS DOGS:
boy I wonder which Disney villain prequel is gonna rip off Parasite
-
That looks terrible.
If theaters exist when it opens it's going to make 1.2 billion dollars.
-
Hollywood really don’t understand woman empowerment and why people wanted it in the first place.
I rather watch a 10h long “See my vest” video than this flick.
-
-
Emma Stone looks like she's doing her damndest to make Cruella as evil and fun as possible, but . . . . yeah, can't watch a movie where the lady who skins dogs is the heroine. If it were just about fashion then yeah, I could enjoy it, but this is a lady who makes and wears real fur.
If we need another villain prequel can we do Captain Hook?
-
Is it just me or are they really trying to make her Harley Quinn?
-
She's not laughing nearly enough to be Harley. And Harley would never skin her precious hyenas.
-
I'm so torn…on the one hand, I'm really fed up with all these Disney Prequels, Reboots etc...on the other hand, I really like Emma Stone and think she is a great choice to play a young Cruella de Ville.
-
If we need another villain prequel can we do Captain Hook?
Only if we get Tom Hiddleston to play him.
-
Only if we get Tom Hiddleston to play him.
I heartily agree. (or Sacha Baron Cohen)
Also that song is far more catchier than it has any right being.

The 2nd half of Amphibia Season 2 starts next Saturday.
-
It's getting great reviews!
-
Ohh, I'm liking what that one reviewer said:
"Awkwafina gives the most energetically creative animation performance in a Disney movie since Robin Williams played the genie in "Aladdin."
And I love Awkwafina.
-
I have no idea who Awkwafina is. But from the trailers I've seen Sisu gives off HUGE Amethyst (Steven Universe) vibes.
-
Awkwafina gets on my nerves with her blackcent stuff.

She was one of the highlights of Crazy Rich Asians:

Are you guys gonna watch Raya and the last dragon this Friday on Disney Plus with premiere access for $30 or are you just gonna wait til it’s on for free
-
Are you guys gonna watch Raya and the last dragon this Friday on Disney Plus with premiere access for $30
Hahah ha ha ha.
No.
-
It's R$79,90 to watch it. Plus the subscription to Disney+ that has less than half of the american library.
If I watch it is gonna be the Blackbeard way. -
Oh so they're doing the Mulan thing again
Yay
