! Ok we are fucked Makima is indeed a Devil.
! Oh boy, a devil among devils, even. Evidence for "Makima is a bad guy, actually" is looking pretty insurmountable at this point.
! I was on she is/has a pact with the "Unknown Devil", then I read a theory about the "Judgement Devil", but know thinking what would be more terrible to the japanese salary man than the "Boss Devil".
From the token serious rival/friend character, Aki became someone so likable. Those first pages made me "someone hug this man".
And hints the love they feel towards Makima might be something she forced on them.
Makima's elaborated master plan or whatever schemes she is planning will likely only be stopped by Denji.
So first theory that popped into my head is a lot of people fear not being in control. Of course there are plenty of people who love not being in control and cling to religion and whatever but we'll forget about them. Anyway, I think the fear of not having any control over your life is a much bigger fear in Japan and if people fear not being in control than a "Control" Devil that can give you orders and take your control away could be a thing.
Next question is who does/has known about Makima? Angel knew, but forgot, so can Makima give "orders" for people to forget? Can she give orders for people to "love" her and then make them forget that she gave the order so they always act to protect her without really knowing why? Clearly Angel lost part of his memory and time when he suddenly regained control and realized it was night and what he had done. Yet he then forgot that.
Soooo…Is Makima the one who actually pushes for that future where Denji kills everyone and goes berserk ? Akii trying to avoid certain doom made him walk right into it, apparently.
Ever since she stood up to Darkness Devil she has been suspect as f*ck, but this chapter solidifies that whatever her master plan is doesn't nearly qualify as nice or benevolent.
Nah, I believe Aki won't die here because of the premonition.
Most likely Angel goes.
Makima's purpose is likely creating a devil power monopoly over the world governments that she can bend at her will.
I think if she is a devil, she is likely to be the "Order" or "Law" devil.
Which can be said to be the greatest enemy for devils because they represent chaos and every government/group fears and is controlled by some kind of order.
Makima continues to be terrifying.

I dont think she's a devil, thats too on the nose. And Fujimoto loves his red herring.
But yeah I think this confirms she's a villain. Too many clues for that to not be true.
Makima is the Unrequited Love Devil
I like to think that Makima is some sort of necessary evil instead of a villain. Someone who does awful things to keep the peace or hold something worse at bay.

Nah, she didnt have to make angel kill everyone to demonstrate his power.
She's very manipulative and too cruel.
! Yo dawg! I heard you like guns.
! Makima or POTUS, who commanded Gun Devil to attack?
! "Dominance devil" seems a little bland, but it's fitting. Losing control of oneself is a genuinely terrifying thing. Wish there'd been more buildup of the international intrigue aspect of the gun devil and such before we got this all-out whatever is going on. Makima having this level of power and international acclaim seems not to fit in well with the early state of things.

!
! About being the Dominance Devil, I think everybody fears being unable to control their lives or themselves. That’s way in every media their’s a telepath they are generally dislike or distrusted. And everybody fearing Makima is just making her more powerful, that’s a rookie mistake, that gonna cost big time.

! Fear Makima.
I had to go back to the first page to check the name of the translator. Amanda Haley, you earned the respect of a life time by translating that name list. May life always be gentler on you than Fujimoto was this week.
! Scary Makima. Should we understand that the 1997 Gun Devil attack we see was a test of its abilities ? By the japanese government ?
I'm also confused by the US presiden'ts phone call. Does this mean any country that owns a sizeable piece of the gun devil can still pass contracts with it as if it were whole, or was Makima's little story utter BS and the Gun Devil is still freely romaing somewhere out there?

! We are in 1997. Remember that the Soviet Union is still kicking, the appearance of devils changed geopolitics. And I guess, the americas and sovites that have around one fifth of him could make deals with him, having him being still a powerful devil.
Does this mean she can control other devils? And it makes sense why she wants humanity to prevail, the more people submit to her the stronger she gets.
And the more people don't submit the stronger she gets anyways because
! the fear of submission already does the job.
! Control devil is a good one. You could say a lot of things are rooted in the fear of not being under something else's rule. I would like to see the Chaos devil, though, since all the religions and tales suggest humanity is more afraid of existing by chance and without purpose than of being under an entity's power.
! feels good to be right about her power but man 3 double spreads for a villain appearance and that presentation style is sick.
I hope the Japanese audience likes this as much as we do.
Another /a/ character update:
[hide] [/hide]
Always feels like those things are trying a little too hard to be edgy or something. It just doesn't flow naturally to me.
That said, it's actually cool to have all of these characters in one place. In the moment they tend to blend together, and Fujimoto's characters are all so disposable that it's nice to have a little memorial for the ones who've passed.
Re-reading the chapter:
Named 9-12, the date of the event. Sequel to you know what.
It specifies "Adult male" victims and child victims, so why would it avoid targeting adult women? There were girl names in the list (Rise, names ending in -ko, Aoi), so it was indiscriminate with the children.
The number of names of the collumns, I only counted one, (37) so the number of victims seems to be in the 200s, and the radius of 1.5 km, considering that the gun devil was at the coast, around half of that area.
I hope the translation team was given this page clean, or else it was a nightmare.
There were 271 victimes in 12s, on the way he targets, maybe he is a feminist to adult woman, though it's probably not it.
Makima looks like an adult woman.
Didn't realize this chapter was released earlier this time.
Control devil does sound incredibly powerful… so whomever she manages to talk to (read: order) is under her control? Or are there exceptions (strong-willed people/devils, special people like Denji? Interesting, that one...
I have to say, the Gun Devil's design looks pretty impressive.
I heard a discussion that she probably has a limit or else she would have won by now.
Look like angel devil just snapped out when she commanded Aki. She probably has a number of people under her command curse, and when she makes a new one, the oldest one gets free. This is going to be a hint for her of someone she thought dead is alive or something like that, if her powers work like that and she made a mistake.
I have seen this picture in reddit where apparently Makima is using her power, but only power is affected. Denji could be immune somehow?
There's some limitations on who and what she can control. She has absolute control over small animals, but on humans, fiends, and devils it seems that: a) they must belong to the structure where she is the boss; b) is more effective under direct eye contact or touch; c)there's bound to have a time limit or an awareness limit (such as Angel breaking free) ; d) stronger the will the less control she can inflict.
Still don't explain the bit with the prisoners though.
Maybe it's one of those cases where the controlling-related power doesn't work on MC because the MC is too stupid to work on it.

It feels nice when you're vindicated.
As someone who has lived in Japan I find it strange that he showed that Christian church being targeted in Japan. Japan was one place that Christianity never proliferated and one reason is that the Japanese actually killed the Christians to try and snuff out the foreign religion. Christian churches exist there, they just don't have a huge following or anything and I hardly ever saw any. Maybe he wanted to show that the gun devil had no problem massacring children but instead of targeting Japanese children in a school or park the idea that it might have been murdering foreign Christian children instead of Japanese children might have gone over better with the Japanese readers? I don't know if that makes sense but it just seemed very unnatural to show a Christian church in Japan of all things.
Also, does the Gun Devil really not target adult women? Makima has the appearance of an adult woman so something isn't matching up. Either the Gun Devil can kill anybody so it makes perfect sense to let the Gun Devil kill her from range or the President doesn't know it can't kill her because she already put a "control" on the Gun Devil. America only has 20% of the Gun Devil but of course Makima was the one that told us so she could have been lying. On the other hand Makima asked Denji to kill the Gun Devil from the very beginning. It seems like the entire story has come down to Makima, the Control Devil, being the most feared Devil so that when the Soviets found the Gun Devil, they willingly split it with America, China, and others to intentionally build up the fear of guns in order to raise the Gun Devil's power so that it would be capable of defeating Makima.
Honestly, I think like the Gun Devil, the Control Devil is so powerful it can't be killed but I think she would be impossible to control as well so killing is their only real option.
Still don't explain the bit with the prisoners though.
Considering she seems to offer the life of the prisonners in exchange for the death of targets, I would see it as a contract she passed - or forces controlled victims to pass - with another devil (that she may or may not have under her control regardless).

Makes to much sense and is too tame for Fujimoto's wild ride.
On other news, Gun Devil attacked Fuji's home town, what a madlad.

Now we know there's a control devil, it may, but back then all we saw was her ask somebody to say a name and she crushed the target. It could also be her own power, just look at what happened with the Darkness devil.
So I've been re-reading the series. A lot of it makes more sense in retrospect than it did the first time, especially the Santa Claus Who's Who. Still as funny and brilliant, too.
I'm a bit fuzzy, however, when it comes to Devils. As far as I can tell we've met 3 categories of Devils on earth, or possibly 4 :
Fiends are Devils taking a human corpse, just like power and just like Violence took up Arai.
Devilmans are persons merged with a devil just like Denji, Reze, Shad and Quanxi.
Yes, they are fiends, power is just the blood devil, while denji is not the chainsaw devil, but denji.
I wouldn’t trust president Frump’s word at face value tho. Do we ever see a devil take human form? Was doll also a hybrid and not a devil as well?
The point being, that for the random enemy, denji is the chainsaw devil, not denji. Makima could be the same.
I think Santa only had a contract, a very specific one, she only became a devilman after eating part of Darkness Devil.
I dunno, the nature of their hive mind seemed to go back to before the darkness tasting.
While that wouldn’t discount a contract, that means that the doll devil was moving Santa’s soul around since forever, instead of Santa … I don’t know, any option is weird. Being a devil man (devilfolk?) before and being a hive mind also is strange, the one that makes the most sense to me is that it is the doll devil itself, but then Germany deals with free devils is very strange to me.
Well someone with a contract with the Doll Devil should be able to also the puppeteer, the offering would be the ones that Santa failed in turning into perfect dolls.
But yeah, Santa could also be a devilman
Thanks !
And yes, Santa/Doll is a whole other level of messy. I would assume Doll Devilman, because we didn't ever see creating puppets come at any cost (and how many of them there were !) whereas using Curse's nails did.
Or did we ? Early on, she mentions having only 6 months left to live, so this might be it.
We just never saw the cost she paid. Like the President offered up 1 year of every American citizens life, she could have offered the Doll Devil years of her life or maybe there is something in particular that the Doll Devil craves.
The Future Devil usually made people give up a lot for contracts. One person gave half their lifespan and another gave up three of their senses. Aki just got lucky because he is a central character.

I would not call it lucky and more that the Future devil is like Ryuk and knew that Aki would entertain him. I would rather lose three of my sense than live all the things that Aki has gone through since his childhood.
Love how this series attracts a lot of really talented fan artists. Kudos to the people who made that animation.
