Pff try to make a family friendly authentic Shakespeare, no that's a challenge.
Well, Lion King is basically Hamlet.
-
Well, bits of Hamlet that don't involve suicide.
Pff try to make a family friendly authentic Shakespeare, no that's a challenge.
If I see once more Romeo and Juliet set-up I'lll scream. (not Disney, just everywhere)
-
Well, Lion King is basically Hamlet.
People always say that, (including the Disney staff themselves, I know) but there's a pretty compelling argument to be made that its actually much closer the Henry IV. Not as well known but a way closer match.

Disney has delayed Mulan indefinitely.

I thought they had already stopped all Star Wars movie production before all this anyway?

Full stop the James Cameron Avatar project.

It'll get released whenever China is ready to open theaters again. Then it'll be released steaming in the US. Studios got to make their money somehow and the US is going to be a dumpster fire for a while.
Star Wars is probably better suited for TV right now anyway. Movies have to be broad and can't please everyone, TV can get away with whatever. Keep the movies as events, not annual whatevers.
Avatar being delayed, well… not like anyone was looking forward to it anyway. They hadn't even done a teaser trailer yet.
On the general note of movies coming back to theaters in general for the forseeable future..

Anyone been watching Comic Con?

Owl House and Amphibia have been pretty good.

I totally forgot this was coming out soon. Awesome song, they've still got it.

Mulan is coming to Disney+… for 30 bucks
I didn't have much interest in it anyway but damn that tear it (I know why they're doing it, but it's arguable too high for non-families) -
Yeah no. I'm not paying 30 bucks to stream a movie. ANd that's ON TOP of the subscription price? Hell no.
I'm barely willing to pay that for a physical copy.
I know its a whole new world and they need to experiment with price points and make their production budget back but I think most people are going to balk at that price and resort to pirating instead. 8.99$ and they'd probably sell a lot, 30$ is ridiculous.
-
I assume the $30 is more to try to get families with young kids who spend around that or even well over that at theaters already?
But yeah it's them testing the waters here I feel.
-
I've seen quite a few people argue that you'd pay the same to see it in a theater but that's ignoring the fact that the theater ticket is going to be split between the studio and theater chain, that paying a premium to see it on the big screen is different than doing so on at home, that you're already paying a subscription fee, and that it sets a really bad precedent going forward for Disney+ subscribers.
For instance, if you willing to pay for this, then why wouldn't they try the same thing, even if it's a more modest charge, for the second season of The Mandalorian?
-
Godfuckingdammit. If I wasn't Chinese I wouldn't pay this shit, but my whole family feels an obligation to.
Than and, y'know, it's Mulan.
-
On Owl House this week
! Lumity is on the menu boys. But wait who is writing the letters?
-
On the Amphibia episode
! I can't stress enough how much I like the grunkle Stan voice. Totally non Kermit beast polo announcer was cool too.

For fans of physical media, Disney is no longer releasing their classics on 4K Ultra HD discs:
https://movieweb.com/disney-4k-blu-ray-releases/?fbclid=IwAR30qw4YMeyWmGuxzcE7hhc60k93ioZar2IYlYbiP4ZzPh8CWrDUbPza5fcThey're not giving up Disney+ for nothin'.
-
"Subscribe or die." - Mouse, Diseny. 2020
-
Disney's approach to physical media has been awful for decades so this is no surprise; after being somewhat decent at putting their material out during the early VHS era, they've been half-assing it ever since.

And even in the early days, Eisner and co. were reluctant to doing that because they feared doing so would mean they could no longer profit from re-releasing the films to theaters. That turned out to be the case, of course; why go to the theaters to see The Jungle Book if you have it at home or Blockbuster.
-
Sure, but aren't 4K Ultra HD disk kind of a super niche market anyway? People only moved up to blurays gradually (because the jump just wasnt as big as from tape to dvd), most never opted to upgrade to that step beyond because it was even less of a quality jump.
But yeah, streaming is eventually going to kill cds and dvds, but that time isn't here quite yet. I know there's been a couple digital only albums I wanted on CD but couldn't get any other way, like the Black Panther instrumental soundtrack.
-
Vinyl has made a sort of niche comeback, so maybe all is not lost.
-
Vinyl made a niche return because it has a better sound quality than CDs and mp3s.
Frankly, I don’t see much difference between 4k and regular bluray, might be because I used to wear glasses and the myopia is coming back, so I don’t see a clear reason for those things being different.
-

That somewhat made sense when they were following that seven year system but made a lot less when they abandoned that in favor of releasing them on video every so often. Sure, it made those releases something of an event and made people more likely to buy copies right then but those same people would have bought those videos if they were perpetually in release.
Plus the problem with Disney has never really been the availability of their major releases but the sheer amount of lesser known material that they can't be bothered to release or even put on Disney+. There's ten of thousands of hours of material between the stuff they've made and the stuff they've acquired that's essentially lost now because of their system of managing their catalog.
-
We're never officially getting that Kingdom of the Sun documentary, The Sweatbox, for instance.
Or the episode of Atlantis that crossed over with Gargoyles that was fully storyboarded and voiced.
But thats the insider stuff I understand being niche and not releasable. Things like, not releasing seasons 4 and 5 of the Muppets, or large chunks of the Disney afternoon, are baffling. (I get not releasing Quack Pack at least.)
Though on that note…
Watch it before it gets pulled again.
-
I wonder if there's some music rights that Disney doesn't want to pay for the Muppets Show (though they are going to add Dinosaurs soon supposedly, which I'll take).
But most of the Disney Afternoon stuff is there, even Quackpack and Timon & Pumbaa (I think Aladdin and Shnookums & Meat are the only ones not there, if you don't count the missing episodes of Darkwing Duck, Talespin, and Bonkers).
More frustrating is the missing film catalogue that Disney owns all the rights to. Like I get the logic of not putting "non-classics" One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing (featuring Peter Ustinov in yellowface) or Savage Sam (with some awful Native American stereotypes) on there, but there's nothing offensive (that I'm aware of) in Third Man on the Mountain or The Three Lives of Thomasina, or why even the edited version of Make Mine Music isn't there.
-

Undoubtedly but for the first three seasons they just cut bits they didn't want to shill out for licensing. No matter how iconic said bit might be.
But season 4 has the Star Wars episode!

The missing episodes of Darkwing and Talespin are all I care about

Barbariants at the gates and Owl House.
! Marcy is waaaaaaaay more likable than Sasha. And it seems the King has it's own plans, that's usually not good.
Ok the little jab at Alan Moore playing wizard sports got me, really nice joke. I mean just look at him, having fun like a regular non-Rasputin wizard.
[hide] [/hide]
! Geez Amity is thirsty, quick some one give her a Luzjuice. Wait Eda and Lilith were redheads? Oh witchmanity why couldn't ya keep with that. -
Man, has anyone ever roasted Quidditch before Owl House?
-
Probably. While doing a magical school show? Probably the first time.

So Disney made a new Executive Director position for Disney Channel. Specifically an Executive Director of Integrated Content Strategy and Development:
https://insidethemagic.net/2020/08/disney-executive-director-diversity-inclusion-tm1/?utm_content=buffer596ea&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer&fbclid=IwAR1yRyb0yAUhZRWTOwssHPFnDbgdYu627vNcVu-UaTvP-LSPazYiPBW_j-cBasically showing that they really want to make up for Song of the South.

at least it's somewhat of a step in the right direction.

TOH and Amphibia.
! Well done Lilith, you fucked up big time.
The king sound to cool to be true after that ominous ending last week. And is he supposed to be a giant salamander? Because damn, he is big. -
Dang…. The new episode of The Owl House.
! Lilith and Eda fight was amazing. The reveal of Lilith was the person that put the curse on Eda was heartbreaking and shocking at the same time. The final scene of the Luz returning to house alone was also heartbreaking as well.
-
TOH has a pretty smooth fight animation, from this, to the Grom to Eda vs Lilith in the Covention.
! I'm not buying Emperor Belos came 50 years ago to teach withces how to proper use magic. That's a very Alan Moore move, bet it's him. And despite being the older sister Lilith has a sister complex "if you were so great so come it was so easy to curse you", and has been guided by guilt ever since.

Don Hall? Awkwafina? I'm down.

Yeah, I've known about that movie for a while. The concept art looks amazing, so I'm really hoping the movie turns out good.

TOH
! Oh Lilith you dumb bitch, you just got played by the emperor. So Belos wants the human world…
That was truly badass Luz, the good old last minute double cross. Ok Lilith, you still a cunt, but at least you done some good in the end.
So the day of unity is meant to unify Earth and The Boiling Isles? I'm still on Belos being Alan Moore. -

Whoopi Goldberg wants them to make a Wakanda Land in the parks. Which hey, I would totally get behind:

Where they going to get the Vibranium from?
-
Where did going to get the Vibranium from?
What did ya think the Area 51 raid was for? A distraction for Disney infiltrate and steal the vibranium vaults of Hangar 18.

Well, Mulan is getting decent reviews. Thank god:
https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mulan_2020Not, "OMG this is amazing!" reviews, but decent.

Dana Terrace did an AMA yesterday, here's some of the more interesting questions answered (there where around 5k replays so she answered only a little):

Also Eda has been to Vegas. Eda was Grunkle Stan Vegas wedding and you can't take that away from me. -
No questions about the similarities with Xenoblade?
