Well thanks for the detailed post about Lorenz, that must have taken a while… ultimately to each their own I guess. There are plenty of nobles in the game who care for the people and work to help everyone without being insufferable jerks or creeps. When the best thing about him is that at the very end he kinda sorta apologizes but keeps being an ass, I'm just not sold.

I am finally on the last route.

What kind of chaos have I unleashed?
But character aside, sorry Lorenz, Leonie is my lance girl.

Just managed to finish run #2 (Golden Deer) last night. It answers more questions but not nearly as many as I'd have liked. Here are some of my current thoughts on the units I used (Normal difficulty BTW), which may not entirely apply to a first run because on NG+ I was easily able to get multiple skills to S/S+ on just about every character (even without cheesing/grinding auxiliary battles, though I did do that a couple of times just to see if it worked… and boy did it work).
Guess I'll hide the wall of text:
! * Lysithea is the most broken unit in the game. With the Thyrsus staff and the Shoes of the Wind consumable for movement (plus Dancing her when needed) she is a walking nuke. It only got more disgusting when at S/S+ Reason I was able to stack Dark Tomefaire and an additional dark magic range increase (and later I was able to do the same for Faith). She one-shotted the Death Knight in every single encounter, and I don't mean "attacked twice" one-shotted but literally instant annihilation with no chance of a counterattack. She took out plenty of other bosses and demonic beasts in the same fashion as well. And god forbid armored units stand in her path. Then there was the time I beat chapter 20 on the first turn, because her Warp range was so absurd that I sent Marianne straight to the top of the map and killed the commander with ranged magic (so as to bypass the units blocking the way). I think the previous chapter took me 2 turns with similar methods because I had to kill 2 commanders. Even more trivial when paired with the battalion that grants AOE movement +5 for a turn, which I had equipped to Leonie. I guess that brings me to…
- Leonie is such an amazing unit. Yeah I had to put some extra work into her since I decided to make her a Dark Knight, but just with her crit rates and defensive stats alone she's automatically solid. When I hit S/S+ in Lance she went back to an outright monster, and her having magic options is really no joke. The certification stat bonus gave her like +8 magic but I also pumped some more into her with consumable items, and by endgame she was having plenty of fun spamming magic.
- Ignatz ended up okay. Really not a remarkable unit overall, but I found utility in him. I had him open doors/chests as an Assassin and later as a Mortal Savant he was mostly there to soften up enemies or finish them off. For that purpose it is actually pretty cool that he has Seal Strength. He also manned ballistas on occasion and he did have a knack for critting with Blizzard.
- Claude is pretty overpowered. Especially since no matter how hard I tried, he ended up over-leveled. Partly because of his unique ability but also because anytime a group of enemies tried to target him, he'd just kill them all instantly with counter-attacks. I think he gained like 5 levels just in the first post-skip battle. I benched him for several fights and other times had him as an adjutant (with Shamir =3), but I guess you can't stop him from being a flying death machine. Though on that note…
- Hilda is disgusting with an axe, and putting her on a Wyvern just makes it unfair. She obliterates anything. She had training axes most of the game because it literally didn't matter; she would bash faces in. I don't get the point of trying to armor her because nothing even gets to attack her, and if they do it usually misses (god bless Alert Stance). Might as well give her the mobility so she can charge in and hack shit up.
- Raphael just punched things for days. It was hilarious after S in Brawl to see him with a consistent 50+ crit chance. For each of his four attacks. Unless he was surrounded by mages, I could have him solo entire armies with his 75+ HP. I uppercutted so many horses and monsters to death it isn't funny.
- Shamir is one of my favorite units but I kept her as a Sniper and she suffered from the low mobility. Her attack range came in super useful, but usually about halfway through a map she'd fall behind movement-wise and be hard to keep involved in the fights. Amazing with a bow though.
- Marianne was my core healer and as a Holy Knight she really did great. Silence is such a useful spell and the mobility gave her so much freedom. Whenever she did get attacked she would always immediately heal back up to full (and kill the attacker) with Nosferatu. Good stuff.
- Petra was a sword-wielding Falcon Knight this time around, and it worked pretty well. She seems to struggle with damage output but I gave her a crit ring and with S/S+ in Sword she solidified as an exceptional unit.
- Dorothea was my Dancer and secondary healer. It felt great having two Physic users, and of course Lysithea and Byleth can also heal adjacent units so I felt I had plenty of leeway in terms of units taking hits. Her offensive presence is also quite respectable, and Meteor is very useful to have as a backup option. Super solid core unit.
- Ingrid was the last unit in my core group, and it's weird because she's great and I love her but I can't think of anything really special to say about her. I think mostly she's just consistent as hell. I kept her as a Paladin this time and she's just an all-around reliable unit. She wasn't going around soloing entire maps but at the same time she was always thinning the enemy and holding her own in any situation. She pulled out a lot of clutch crits too.
Anyway I'm super curious about the 3rd route (Blue Lions) because the other two routes don't do Dimitri or Dedue any favors in terms of character development. But there are so many other games to play as well as upcoming games, and the total playtime has already hit nearly 200 hours…
-
Finally finished all 3 story paths and I'm glad I did. Because Edelgard story path got shafted.

Who?
Q&index=2 -
Astram is GHB. Archanea got some love this time.

Char Aznable?!
The Red Comet?! -
The Marth games never fail to make feel like a complete casual. Bantu aside, I honestly believe this is my first seeing any of those characters (or at least first time seeing this not-Camus persona).
Wish they rode on the 3H hype for longer, but I doubt it's going to get the Echoes treatment, so it should keep appearing every now and then anyways.

The archer girl and Nagi were added in Shadow Dragon. They weren't in the originals.

Alright, so I've had the game for about… 4 days, and I'm already at... THE MONTH.
[hide]-I picked Black Eagles because I loved every single character except Edelgard and Hubert from the start. I was interested in the last two at first.
-Went in with full intentions of going full Edelgard support, and began ignoring the 'chuch' allies and hating some of them (still don't like Catherine or Cyril)
-Notice that Hubert is a tremendous jerk to everyone (I'm sure there's a backstory to him)
-Notice Edelgard giving me shit because I'm mourning my father's death.
-Notice Edelgard requiring me to talk to her in order to be on her side, instead of her coming to me to convince me to betray the church
-Learn too late that I was supposed to talk to her at a certain point, and I've forced myself to side with the church. I can't reload to fix this.
-SCREW IT! I'M SIDING WITH THE CHURCH! EDEL PISSED ME OFF ANYWAY!-Currently about to start my final week of studies
-I have every single student except Lorenz (lol) and Hilda (had I known…)
-I've gotten both of them to B-Support
-Now I just start the week and hope maybe both join? Here goes...[/hide]And in general, I love this game so freaking much. Oh my god, it's sooooo goooooood.

I was fearing they would go SoV style and make the new playable characters be entirely new characters instead of those who were already part of the game or at least mentioned there. At least they added Jeritza and Anna in wave 3, I suppose.
Still, no Holst, no Rodrigue, no Judith, no Nader, no Ladislava, no Cornelia, not a single one of the characters the game actually hyped me for pretty much seals the fact I am not buying the DLC.
At least I hope Holst will appear as an NPC, but I suppose teasing his appearance but never showing him is supposed to be his gag (I heard Edelgard even jokes about it in the BE-route). -
I CALLED IT
I CALLED ANNA AS WAIFU
Knew it would be paid BUT it'sANNA
guess I'll hold out on my second save. -
I'm down for more characters.
That said, new classes? Frick yes. The Master class selection is so boring, and the fact that their growths make some of the Advanced classes… And here's hoping the sauna is for time skip only.
-
New activities is an exciting prospect because in NG+ I always had more activity points than I knew what to do with.
-
So, dumb question: Is there a meaning for Claude's class, Barbarossa? I know it means "Red Beard", but was it a title used somewhere in the world?
-
Yes, in-universe it means "broken as hell." :ninja:
But in all seriousness, I don't recall any references to it in the two routes I've experienced.
-
Is just what the eastern kingdom people call “death by arrows from the sky”
-
@Johnny:
So, dumb question: Is there a meaning for Claude's class, Barbarossa? I know it means "Red Beard", but was it a title used somewhere in the world?
In the real world or in FE world? In real world was how a roman emperor was known, so I suppose it sorta fits the other master lord (?) classes names.
It was also used to name the Operation Barbarossa, the famous operation in witch the Nazis invaded the URSS, which is to this day the biggest military operation ever, so it kinda also fits Claude "schemes"… although this one turned into the biggest military failure ever, so maybe not? -
Quick question if anyone could help us out regarding the "best" house run order. So I've started with the BE and a few months have went by, but today I saw on twitter that perhaps the BL seem to be the recommended starting house? Then the consensus alternates between GD next or BE, also there's 2 routes within the BE which is something I didn't know about.
Apologies if this a daft question and I'm being overly pernickety, but I'd like the to have the most effective playthrough cos I don't have a lot of time for games these days and need to try and get the most out of them that I can sometimes.
-
I haven't gone through them all, but now that I know the story I think the best order would be BL -> BE -> GD -> Church.
But that's assuming you'll go through all of them. If you don't have a lot of time for games then you probably won't do 4 runs - or at least not so close to each other that you'll still have the story details fresh in your mind -, so it's better to just pick whatever house you felt like you liked the most. -

Yeah if I do ever get round to doing all 4 playthroughs, they'll be quite spread out so I probably will be fine with whatever I go for, but so far that order you've mentioned is the one I'll be doing, thanks.
-
In the interest of time, you may want to do the BE route last since you can just save your game before the break in the route and not have to do the first half of the game for a fourth time.
-
Blue Lions is the only house I haven't done and that's simply because it has the least number of characters I truly like. I am very curious to see what the deal is with Dimitri/Dedue because the other routes did them absolutely no favors in terms of likability.
The main issue with Black Eagles is how short that route is. It feels like they got lazy or ran out of time and just rushed the post-skip story and then additionally cut out like 25% off the end. Events that span multiple chapters in Golden Deer are summarized in a single sentence of ending narration. It's annoying. But in that sense I'm glad I experienced it first, before I knew that this specific route was getting shafted.

Yeah that's what I was planning to do, by that point going through the beginning stretch would probably be an absolute chore.
-
I'm entering scary levels of obsessing with this game so far, because I'm currently considering finishing my BL run (my second run so far), then doing Golden Deer, then doing BE->CF as a male Dark Mage. Doing all this while I teach every character every skill possible.
[hide]Because I have a feeling future DLC will introduce entirely new paths, and those paths may be even harder.[/hide]
-
I have finally finished church, and I think it was a terrible mistake to play it RIGHT after golden deer.
! It is nearly the EXACT same route with the same order of events -> judith at the valley of torment, the bridge, fort merceus, fighting edelgard, the dubstep city, the ONLY real difference is that grounder field is completely skipped. but this has the consequence of making dimitri and claude just fuck off from the story with little fanfare. Hell at least dimitri APPEARS in a dream sequence, claude just vanishes completely.
! But for golden deer the route was tailored more to Claude's ambitions and his desire to figure out the truth of the world, something the player could go along with. Church route gives the formal explanation of what Rhea did regarding Byleth, but you KINDA can infer/piece together most of it from the other routes.
! If anything I have more appreciation for CF for being much different, length aside.Anyyways all the routes are done, and I feel like taking a break from the game until the next major wave of DLC. If the leaks are true, we've got a lot of interesting things in store.

Hector really keeps that powercreep train running, huh
-
Uuggghhhhh . . . monster fights are NOT fun.
-
Uuggghhhhh . . . monster fights are NOT fun.
They're more manageable once you overwhelm them with gambits and break all their barriers.
-
Yeah monster fights are relatively simple so long as you're only dealing with one at a time. Even multiple at a time can still be manageable because most super moves are capable of damaging barriers
- gambits can fracture multiple barriers if positioned correctly
- some (not all; I think the ones that are right next to the enemy are definite) combat arts are capable of breaking the adjacent barrier
- certain combat arts straight up are monster specific
There's a lot of options to easily whittle down monster health, and they shouldn't really pose too much of a problem other than just luring them so you aggro only one at a time. Monster engagements are almost certainly designed to push unit capabilities seeing as they've put all these new options for super moves in the game.
-
And then you have Marianne's and Sothis's Paralogues….
-
So Maddening mode is freaking nightmare, huh? I can't get past Chapter 2's thief fight…
I feel like I need to just wait the groups of three enemies out, but I keep screwing up.
EDIT: You ever heard that concept of 'If you're having a hard time with something on a video game, bitch about it on the Internet and then it will fix itself'? Yeah, I'm fine now. I'm at Chapter 8 now.
-

After 1 year and 3 months, finally managed to +10 (merge and dragonflowers) Legault in Heroes. Not that I was rushing it, but still was happy when it was completed.
That's all. -
The mighty chin!

PYTHON!!! ******* FINALLY!!! Now my two boys are in <3
His skills are terrible, but if that means he is getting demoted I'm fine with it. I would never get him to +10 is he remained 5*

If you guys are interestedto see who "japanese" players liked in Three Houses.
https://japanesenintendo.com/2019/10/16/fire-emblem-three-houses-character-poll/#more-82058
-
I can understand Lorenz being only 7th because the world is not ready, but Marianne 9th? What Japan is that!?
-
Dorothea in 12th place what?
-
Japan has weird tastes. I actually think the only male character in the top 7 that belongs there at all is Claude. I can't fathom why Dimitri tops the list. Felix is such a one-note whiny emo brat until super late in the BL route, and even then his about face feels too sudden. Sylvain has consistently bad dialogue, but at least I will give him credit for having pretty good support conversations. Ferdinand has nothing really going for him… I even did his Paralogue for the first time on this 3rd run I'm about to finish and it didn't do much for me. Lorenz is STILL pissing me off more each time. I recently got a conversation with him about how he thought everyone was missing the real reason Claude was asking Dimitri for help, and when I found out his brilliant insight was that it was because of the fact that Lorenz was with us, I ragequit the rest of the convo.
Oh well, at least they put Cyril at the correct end of the list. Even though Rodrigue is great and I don't get why he's down there too. Though I guess if it's just a poll of people's #1 favorites, it makes sense for minor characters that only even feature properly during certain routes to end up ignored. The same is true for Judith, who is a great character but I mean, she's hardly prominent most of the time.
Speaking of the girls, Bernadetta #1? LOL yep sounds about right for that awkward hikikomori otaku culture. Not that I have anything against her but come on. Her position should probably be swapped with Dorothea, though my #1 remains Lysithea. My other main complaint about the girl side is that Leonie and Petra are way too low and Mercedes is too high (she just never becomes interesting in any way). The rest I would re-order somewhat but yeah. I think a lot of the characters that end up in the middle or mid-bottom are because people don't take the time to do all the supports or even just chapter dialogue. Marianne and Annette are two characters towards whom I felt really ambivalent for a long time but once you start using them and seeing their supports they really flesh out. Annette is just adorable with all her quirks and she really has a LOT of supports with tons of characters. Like I'm not sure any other character has so many A+ supports.
On the guy side, a victim of this would be Raphael. He's not superficially interesting at all and says a lot of dumb shit, but he's just such a nice innocent guy and he has so many uplifting or just downright hilarious supports (a personal favorite would be his supports with Shamir). Linhardt is also a low-key cool dude.
Anyway, it's always interesting to see how characters are polling, especially since my opinions are still changing 215 hours in. Although let's be real, the best character is and always will be:
[hide]the gatekeeper[/hide]
