I will admit that part of what I'm really looking forward to with Persona 5 is that I expect it to be a completely self-contained story that wraps itself up all in one go unlike a lot of RPGs these days that seem to decide to either do it in dlc or sequels.
EA SUCKS but so does Bioware Thread
-
-
There are tons of RPGs out there that don't do this shit and have conclusive endings and don't resort to this kind of stuff.
Last few I played Shadowrun: Hong Kong, Wasteland 2, Pillars of Eternity, Witcher 3, pretty much any JRPG in recent times.
If we look at other devs Southpark, Skyrim, Deus Ex, etc, etc. It's not a problem that has infected the majority of RPGs.It's pretty much just Bioware being one of the big offenders in that department. And it's not the fact that they do cliffhanger endings necessarily.
I mean whatever you want to leave a game on a promise with a little cliffhanger. Do it if it's necessary but then don't f****** resolve that shit in an overpriced DLC that will in no way look like a good price content proposition if you compare it to what you get out of the main game. Especially when you fuck over last gen after you made it seem like you're commited to them. You know Witcher 2 did a cliffhanger setup and it wasn't even really upsetting it was pretty much like how DA2 ended, a small scene that just showed how the world as a whole will be different. Nothing related to character plot lines etc. And hey holy shit did it payoff.
I think I just learned my lesson here. It's to wait until the game of the year edition comes out or just borrow the games from friends.
-
I do worry about Bioware losing supporters because of reasons like this.
That's a strange concern. I hope they lose supporters and are forced to pull their heads out of their asses. My favorite game franchise could be a lot better than this.
-
I do hope that happens. The main game disappointed me at so many levels. This latest DLC is the only thing I've enjoyed in this game. Unlike this time, I am not going to pre-order the next DA game until player reviews are out. This applies to Mass effect too.
-
Yup. They've officially switched me from "die hard supporter" to "I'll wait a couple months for it to go on sale".
And I really wanted to super support them on this one because I'd gotten DA 1 and 2 used, and Mass Effect 2 and 3 cheap… and I'd really enjoyed all of the games, I just came to them years later, and wanted to be on the boat and show full support from here on out. Including spending 10$ on a deluxe edition that just hives you a slight color variant of a deer you get in-game anyway and an awful throne. ANd I got the art book too!
Next time? (If I even have a compatible system next time) Not so much.
Anyway, watched the ending to the new DLC on youtube. Missed all the story meat in the middle obviously but it seems like an ending that just sort of leaves things where they were anyway... even if you do get a couple more questions specifically answered instead of just alluded to.
-
It's always sad to hear that your favorite game franchise is losing supporters when it's fumbling the ball. Or that it's fumbling the ball period.
I always note though that while DA is my favorite franchise, it's not my favorite game. That honor still goes to Okami. Oh, to get a sequel to that . . . . . (no, I don't count Okami-den.)
That's a strange concern. I hope they lose supporters and are forced to pull their heads out of their asses. My favorite game franchise could be a lot better than this.
That is true. After the huge disappointment that was DA2 (although I didn't hate it as much as other players) they went the distance and made a MUCH better game. Hopefully they'll get the message.

Geeze Robby, by the time you get a current gen console next gen will be out :sideways: .
-
I hope you win one in a lottery or something.
-
Geeze Robby, by the time you get a current gen console next gen will be out :sideways: .
I always wait a few years for a system to come out. Price goes down, better version comes out (especially with handhelds), and theres a library built up. And since a console gen usually lasts 8-10 years with some overlap into the next, waiting 2 or 3 years isn't that big a deal.
Generally you don't get punished for playing a game thats out on the previous generation… for playing it on the previous generation.
-
Pretty sure the only console gen that's lasted 8-10 years was last gen. And I would be incredibly surprised if this gen lasts anywhere near that long. And it's already been almost 3 years I think.
Also you get punished for playing a shitty downport of a game designed more or less for current gen. Maybe I'm just remembering wrong but cross gen stuff for this gen has lasted a lot longer than what I remember from other gens. Doesn't help that last gen lasting so long totally screws with my perception of time in regards to this stuff.
-
I think I remember the PS2 getting crossover games for a fair bit of time.
-
Pretty sure the only console gen that's lasted 8-10 years was last gen
NES was 83, SNES was 91, N64 was 97, Gamecube was 02, Wii 06, WiiU 12.
PS1 was 95, PS2 was 00, PS3 was 06 and PS4 was just released at the end of 13, almost 14. And similar releases on everything else.
ANd in every one of those cases, consoles tend to have games coming out for another couple years after the new one comes out. 6-7 years between consoles, plus another two years of game releases (often their best games) makes for a console's lifespan averaging 8 or 9 years, the most recent gen being one of the longest. Plus some of the consoles were backward compatible, expanding the playability and lifeline of any given game for years further. I can still play PS1 games on the PS3 twenty years later. (But not on the PS4…)
Also you get punished for playing a shitty downport of a game designed more or less for current gen.
I've compared them side by side. They were not designed for current gen. They were designed for last gen and then upscaled. They're almost identical except for some minor upgrade in graphics, and the pre-rednered cut scenes are the same. There was nothing about Inquisition that absolutely required it to be on the next gen, except for some more foliage and lighting textures.
And certainly nothing that called for them to start screwing folks 3/4 of the way through the game's release after pretty much making the point "yes, this particular title is supporting last gen."
If they'd just made it next gen exclusive straight up (like say Bloodborne) there'd be no problem.
-
Part of the reason for it not being designed for current gen, and with other games too, is that people insist on staying on last gen. I realize sometimes there are circumstances prohibiting upgrading but last gen lasted so long and we're only now just getting games that should have come out years ago tech wise. Not that even current gen exclusive games are are much either. There is a definite problem with developers not wanting to progress. Doesn't help that current gen consoles apparently aren't as powerful as people were expecting.
I'm not saying it's fine that they're not offering DLC for last gen since it's their fault for making it cross gen. I don't even know what the discussion is about anymore. But yeah, bad Bioware.
-
I realize sometimes there are circumstances prohibiting upgrading
Like a new console costing a month's rent. Without controllers or games.
If the PS4 was 200$, I'd have one. At 400? There's just not enough out on it that I need to get it for. Though if they'd announced up front that DA was going to do this, that might have been a motivator. I get moved to buying new Nintendo handhelds when they announce Pokemon, for instance… but not before that.
but last gen lasted so long and we're only now just getting games that should have come out years ago tech wise.
And yet the final games were getting on the console are still some of the best ones! And the jump to next gen hasn't done all that much. There's never going to be a tech jump as huge again as what we had between the 2D and 3D platforms, and then the next gen right after that which upped the graphic quality a ton.
Yes, there's an obvious huge difference between PS2 and PS3… but end console PS2 titles were comprable to starting PS3 titles... and again the same now. Graphics can get a little more detailed, areas a bit bigger, more enemies at one... but it's never going to be as huge again. Last gen lasted so long because the power of the systems was good and the ammount of data that could be stored on blu ray was ridiculous, and because the development time on anything more complex or super graphicy is just purely cost and time prohibitive. There wasn't any need to update. Even upon the release of PS4 and XBone, a lot of people felt like there wasn't really a need for another couple years yet.
-
Considering so many games towards the end of last gen were averaging in the 20s framerate wise at 720p or below that's a pretty good reason to need an upgrade unless you want to squint at a slideshow. Though the upgrade in power is just convincing devs to throw optimization to the wind and a lot of games are still running like shit and this is made worse by the consoles not being as powerful as was hoped. The largest reason though is that nobody likes to fucking make games anymore. I mean it's always been a business but it's gotten to the point where devs are just shoving out garbage with no work put into it. I mean look at Ubisoft making like 3 AssCreed games per year. Most devs are just using the extra power to shove more polygons into the main character while essentially making last gen games. You're right that there won't be as much of an upgrade as with the PS1 to PS2 (graphics wise, but it's not like all processing power, should at least, go to graphics) but I still feel like there could be something done. Open world is the big thing now despite the games being mostly empty and boring as fuck. MGSV is one of the games that I think benefited the most from going open world (if you consider it open world) while Ubisoft's games are almost all the same and the "genre" is getting incredibly oversaturated.
We're kind of getting away from the topic here.
-
On sorta-kinda tech/dlc topic: The good news is that this shouldn't happen with Persona 5 for anyone getting it on the PS3.
-
And that's because its reached a point you just can't use that power unless you spend 5 years with a huge staff working on one game. The tech has passed the point where we can currently do anything meaningful with all that power. MGS5 is a fantastic game, but its years past due and way over budget and caused Konami to sever ties with the creator and pretty much end their video game division.
Okami, fantastic game. Ended the company. Journey, fantastic game, took 3 years to make, pretty much ended the company. Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest can only manage one game a console generation instead of 3. And so on.
SO it comes down to design, and gameplay, like it always has since the first console generation. The graphics and worlds, with out current ability to make and populate them, just can't make any better use of the hardware than a minor update in the coat of paint. We don't have the ability or resources to fully utilize that processing power without putting in crazy amounts of development time and cost… and then once a thing does release, something that comes out six months later looks better anyway. It doesnt matter that much or affect things anymore. Next gen in 2020 will be even worse of a minor update.
-
My point is that there's little update because devs spend less time of making a game and more time on marketing the game or shoving frivolous expensive things into the game like voice acting and motion capture. Games are getting more complicated but tools are also getting better so I don't buy the "b-but it's too expensive to make a good game" excuse from companies spending 50%+ of their budget on marketing.
I'm honestly not sure what's up with MGSV. The series has always been expensive to make but V is literally two decent size maps and doesn't seem like it should have put a strain on budgets or manpower. And most of the models are scanned in and not modeled in a normal way. Not to mention that the game uses made up weapons so you don't have to account for weapon licensing. Music licensing might have been something, and the game has really good mocap.
-
Voice acting and motion capture are part of that "looks better and uses the hardware" thing though. Its not frivilous, because it makes the games look better, and makes use of the tech.
Is it important to the gameplay? No. But that's not affected by the stronger hardware anyway, outside of having bigger enemies or levels on-screen. Shadow of the Collosus style enemies that were system straining on the PS2 are a standard on the PS3, and a Dynasty Warriors mob went from 80 enemies onscreen to 150, and those are great updates… but don't make or break the gameplay itself. Otherwise the PS4 isn't seriously doing anything the PS2 couldn't aside from looking prettier... with more voice acting and motion capture and bigger areas and scenery effects.
(I still remember how impressive the water effects were when the PS2 came out... but it didn't make Final Fantasy 10 better than FF 9. And 6 is stil better than 7, despite the hype.)
-
AI really needs an update and that could be system straining. In any case draw distance and lod are still piss poor and that definitely affects gameplay. Larger and more navigable areas affect gameplay and the PS2 definitely couldn't do a lot of stuff being done with that since I remember lots and lots of games with tons of invisible walls on the PS2 while that's less of an issue now. Though you could do it on lesser hardware as you can see with Thief in 1998.
It is partly devs needing to come up with ways of doing things on lesser hardware which devs don't do anymore. I'm not going to sit here and list all the things I think can and need to be improved but devs just aren't using the hardware in a good way and would rather just render more polygons on the main character than use that power in other places. Graphics sell, and while I do think graphics should keep progressing (part of which doesn't even require devs taking time to do things and are essentially number values, like lod as I mentioned above), the focus on shoving all the detail into a small area around the main character rather than making the graphics more consistent is pretty nauseating. Tessellation is incredibly underused still and could replace what most devs are doing graphics wise.
-
-
Luckily, most of them resettled into Platinum Studios.
-
Will it get me an Okami sequel, though?
-
From what I've heard MGS:V wasn't even all that out of the ballpark with it's budget. That wasn't really the reason for the split.
It's pretty much Konami just getting way frugal after seeing how little you need to invest in the mobile market and how big the returns can get.
Also doesn't help that Kojima can probably seem like a crazy spender for the sake of iterating(from the outside it might just look like he is wasting money).
But anyone that played MGS:V pretty much can see how that craziness turned out. You do not get to the point where you can allow players to do all that shit without tons of iteration. Yo gotta try stuff and see if it works and be ready to throw it away if it doesn't.Also people always think more power is only better graphics. There is still a shit ton of meaningful stuff we could do with more power. Especially when it comes to simulation density. It's just that the industry still tends to drift mainly towards graphics.
-
Okami, fantastic game. Ended the company.
I think Clover's hasty exit may also had to do with most of the Viewtiful Joe games along with Godhand even worse sales not helping matters.
Eh but I digress…..and cringe somewhat.
-
-
Have you ever heard of Okamiden?
Okamiden was a mid-quel, done on a handheld and smaller scale. It didnt innovate and reused a lot of areas, dumbed down the exploration, speed, combat, area size, overall story length and variety, had weak mechanics involving the stylus, and it overall wasn't that good. It was an impressive attempt on a handheld, but it was a downgrade in every conceivable way, and it wasn't a real sequel by any definition.
(And any place where it recreated an area from the original… inevitably had load screen transitions that werent in the original)
-
Okay. I think I'm on the final steps.
[hide]I've killed every dragon, obtained every shard (awful reward btw), obtained every bottle, explored everything, and did every character mission. My Journal is empty save for a few requisitions that are bs and I don't care about them.
The only things I haven't done are:
-All the Mosiac Tiles (don't care)
-All the songs (don't care)
-Every single War Room mission (there are still some left)Otherwise, I've gotten every achievement except for Hard/Nightmare Mode and finishing the game.
I think I'm going to go ahead and finish. If there is anything major you think I might be missing, let me know. Otherwise, I'm totally feeling ready to take out Corphyfish![/hide]
-
Nope, your good to go. And if you've dealt with all the dragons you're probably also overleveled and will slaughter the final boss.
You can keep doing the war room missions in post-game anyway… but they're mostly piddly rewards by that point anyway.
-
[hide]I'm actually happy to be overpowered. The shit Corphyfish put me through. He cost me the life of Hawke, and nearly cost me the life of Alistair! I can't wait to get some sour cream, mix it with some onion powder, and then dip his broken Dorito looking face into it so I can chomp his skull clean off.
Tomorrow. [/hide]
-
! Ah, for me it was Loghain rather than Alistair. And him sacrificing to save everyone else felt… right, so my Hawke got to live.
! Anyway you have it, its presumably the last time any of those three characters will come up. -

[hide] Alistair was king in my first playthrough, so I just had to sacrifice Stroud to save Hawke, which I didn't give a damn about. This playthrough my Alistair is a Warden though. Which means I'll have to sacrifice Hawke! Because I will never kill Alistair. Sad times are in the future. [/hide]

! Story-wise, I always felt it made most sense to sacrifice Hawke or Loghain rather than Alistair or Stroud. One has a history with Cory while the other gets the chance to make up for his mistakes in Origins. Alistair's connections aren't as big and there's not really emotional investment in Stroud like the others.
-

More importantly, he has history with Varric. And I can't let Varric be sad.
Or ever not in my party.
-
! I chose Hawke as well. It's just way more beautiful. Like if you choose Stroud nobody really gives a fuck. But with Hawke, Varrics character arc just becomes so much better. Also Hawke because I sincerely believe that he is like the only one of all possible candidates that could survive to make a comeback at some point.
I can very easily see them writing off Loghain, Alistair and Stroud as dead. Like you find their corpses/remains in DA4 or something. -
! I think I've made every type of choice with who I let die and who survives the fade encounter. Mostly I kill off my Hawkes that I had little interest in playing when Alistair or Loghaine were around. But if I had Stroud my favorite Hawkes got to make it through.
! The first time I let Hawke die really sucked. I didn't expect to get an option to hug a depressed Varric. Ugh so difficult. It's slightly worse than the choice of letting the Chargers die. -

It's kinda hard to make up for regicide and treason in Loghgain's case anyway.
-
Seems like a perfect time to sacrifice Loghain. Too bad I never saved him in any of my DA:O playthroughs.
More importantly, he has history with Varric. And I can't let Varric be sad.
Or ever not in my party.
[hide] That's the thing. More than sacrificing my Hawke period I just don't want to make Varric sad. But I can't kill my Alistair. [/hide]
-
! Not to mention you also could have sacrified him against the archdemon as well.
-
A friend let me borrow his account with the dlc. Most of my feelings surrounding the DLC remain the same. Way to overpriced for the content and the last one really shouldn't be DLC. The way I went out of that one was ok now I'm fine. Unlike when I finished the main game and I just had this feeling of "but what about Solas?". But enough of that.
I just want to encourage anyone that hasn't already to try the female elven Inquisitor(even better if you're a mage) playthrough and romance Solas. I actually feel like it's one of the best done in gaming so far(I mean sure the competition isn't exactly super strong but still, it's pretty good).
It's all just bitter sweetness and feels really satisfying in its tragedy. Also bonus points for having a romance climax that isn't silly polygon sex(which just makes me laugh), but actually had something that felt more emotionally charged.
It all just fits way too well, you're just way more tied into the story. But I only can compare it to my male Qunari playthrough but I can't imagine the others ones to be all the difference when it comes to being connected to some of the core events.
-
I suppose I can see the appeal in doing the epilogue/ending as dlc after release, so it gives the devs more time on how they want to move things forward and get a better idea on how they want to end things.
-

I don't have a problem with that but don't fucking charge 15 euros for that. That just doesn't feel right, selling a more satisfying ending outside of the main game shouldn't be a thing. To be honest despite liking the dlc I don't think it should exist.
Cause seriously you play it and it just gives more closure to everything. So there is no way that the devs weren't aware of that while designing it. I don't think designing content for more closure after the main game that's intended to be sold is a very respectful thing to do. -
I can agree on that. But is that EA's decision? Bioware's? Both? Who knows. But I've now spent too long dodging spoilers even as titles on youtube videos. It's time to pay up and play Trespasser. gets out her credit card

Probably EA, but it doesn't really matter. In a Marriage, both parties share responsibility for their decisions. Bioware got in bed with them at the very least.

That's a terrible analogy. Even if true.
Trespasser is decent so far. Although I'm sure I haven't reached the really meaty parts yet.
! Holy shit Varric is VISCOUNT now?! I suppose it's ironically appropriate. And I figured there would be a wedding between the Quizzy and Cullen, I just didn't expect it to happen at the beginning so quickly, but it made all the fangirls (and me) squee. Hee hee. I'm also sad that apparently all your companions have apparently left you during these two years, it's like WTF? What happened to loyalty? Not cool, man.
-
Watching all the cinemas and romance options since, well, I won't be playing the epilogue myself anytime soon.
There's a fun little hidden bit.
MAJOR ENDING SPOILER
! When you get to the end and meet Solas, he explains everything to you. Even more so if you romanced him. This entire thing takes about 10-11 minutes to go through all the dialogues.
! However, if you choose one particular dialogue (after having low approval I guess?) you can get him to cut the entire speech down to about 20 seconds. It's pretty fun in its brevity.
! -
Phew! What a hard final fight! I think that might have been harder than the final Corypheus fight. I won by the skin of my teeth. Damn Qunari.
So, Trespasser thoughts:
! Oh, Solas. Why for, Solas? We knew the Elves vs. Humans thing was going to be a big thing in the future in DA, but Jesus. I have no idea how they're going to make a new hero for a new game when the Inquisition is still going to be so important in the future. Solas as the villain? I don't wanna fight Solas! sigh Fucking Bioware. But dang, Solas ditched his simple apostate robes for some bitchin' armor.
! Whereas my Quizzy has now lost an arm. I did a double-take when I saw it. But I guess it was the only solution, wasn't it?
! All around it was a good DLC. Mostly just a lot of Eluvian hopping but that in itself is more than it seems since each Eluvian can take you to an entirely different place. I got more than I thought I would.
! This was my human Quizzy, and since I'm far from getting to playing my Elf Quizzy romance with Solas, I decided to look up the Romance ending and oh man is it different. You can feel the heartbreak dripping off the screen. Bioware has had a field day with this Romance path.
!Oh, and everyone needs to find a video of the end credits for the DLC. There's no spoiler for the DLC itself in it. You just . . . . . need to find it.
-
Trespasser has a lot of hidden stuff. Mostly collecting shit.
A rainbow great sword(which looks hilarious my favorite Iron Bull weapon)+ brand a 1h sword with a blade that will consists purely of particles(fire, ice, lightning depending on the base) are pretty and being on PC actually gives me the ability to make those useful cause their base stats actually suck.Srsly Bioware why would you put in post game content that's so bad on the item stat front.
-
I didn't really understand all the dog biscuits. They didn't sell for shit and I didn't find anybody to give them to. So what was the point?
-

You give them to the Mabari that Cullen is playing with. You'll get 2 stat points for each snack given. If you gather all snacks you get a joke weapon + small cutscene with the Mabari.
Other secret things that I've found.
! Catching 5 Harlequins
Straightening pictures
A fireworks minigame
Halla treasure hunt
Secret gold chamber with like 150k-200k gold(don't remember which)
