My Belmont rankings is:

I would have rather than having Richter as an echo, to have all Belmonts as the Koopalings..

Metroid: 25
Yoshi: 14
Kirby: 39
Star Fox: 17
G&W: 2… (So Ice Climbers, Duck Hunt and R.O.B. have to share with assist trophies and nobodies, but Mr Old as fuck here can put his two songs alnone?)
Wii Fit: 10
Sonic: 20
Bayoneta: 11
Final Fantasy VII: 2 (still only 2, still says FFVII, Sakurai, what deal did you get with Square?)
Street Fighter: 36
Pac Man: 13
Other: 97 (Duck hunt, Balloon fight, clu clu land, Ice Climber, Wrecking crew, Stack-Up/Gyromite, Mach Rider, Famicom Medley, <takamaru's franchise="">, Shin Onigashima medley, 3d Hot Rally, Tetris)
Castlevania: 34320 songs, plus:
Splatoon: Half assed estimate of 25 (the screen showed 4 fully and half of another, the scroll didn't move on that page, and it seemed to me that could be a little more than 5 pages)

I'm mildly disappointed that Richter and Dracula didn't do the whole exchange.

I think that we (and by we I mean mostly me) are spaming this tread a little, and I believe that I already saw this, but I'm not sure so:
Collector's edition. I already have one GCC, I can have another, the adapter is not that expensive, and the game MUST be mine, but if that's it, and the fancy box, and no soundtrack or artwork or.. Idunno, a Amiibo stand? Can't trully justify myself.
But I'm very likelly getting it, I never buy special editions.
-
Tbf it’s pretty reasonable for them not to include a 900 song soundtrack in the special edition.
-
We left reasonable back when Shulk was revealed.
-
This 50 CD set includes such hits as "Love Deterrence (Peace Day Mix)", "Battle With Miror B.", "K. Rool Rap", and many more and can be yours at the low low price of $299.95!
-
So it's not like the soundtrack they gave Club Nintendo owners which was more of a sampler everything is gravy.
-
I've been begging for a Castlevania rep in Smash Bros. for years. And K. Rool as well. Anything else from this point on is a bonus for me.
After Ridley and K. Rool, I want every villain's Final Smash to be them destroying their hero's place of residence.
So Shadow's confirmed as an Echo Fighter, right? If freaking Richter got into the first Smash game Castlevania joined and Knuckles replaced Shadow as an Assist Trophy, it's inevitable. I can't wait to harness his angst. Especially after recently reading the Archie Comics Sonic/Mega Man Worlds Collide crossover from a few years back.
Although I would feel a little bad if Mega Man couldn't get his own Echo Fighter like any of the other Mega Men, Proto Man, or Bass just because they're all in his Final Smash like Chrom was for Lucina in Smash 4.
!
It's going to be a bit weird for Shadow to a Sonic clone without any of his Chaos abilities including the spring Up special, but I'll still take it lol.
Umpopular opinion, but I would have prefered the Simon with Light Yagami's head attached to his torso.
You call that an unpopular opinion? My favorite Simon Belmont design is actually from the Lords of Shadow reboot series. It's one of the few good things that came out of that series.
!
!I like the detail Smash put into his classic design, but it still mainly looks like a generic ripoff of every 80's action hero like Conan the Barbarian, He-Man, and Flash Gordon.
But this is just me nitpicking. The classic design is what fans would be most satisfied by and I have no problem with that. He looks fun to play as and that's what matters. Although if Cloud and Bayonetta could get alternate costumes…
-
@Count:

Give us Cloud in a dress you cowards.
-
Oh hey. I didn't even notice Chrom got in too. Good for him.
-
Third watch splatoon got 23 songs.
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
I've been through a range of emotions about the stage list, that the way its presented means that this is it, as the website section doesn't say 'and many more' as with the rest, and that most of the remaining stages have good reasons to not come back, but then gamexplain comes with "where is sector z?" And I'm like wtf? Discounting the this is enough feeling, wasn't the language and presentation of the stages pretty final?
I could see them sneak a few new ones, or return some with dlc, but for returning stages this feels like it.
-
I find it interesting that Moon was shown as an assist trophy, but there isn't a sign of Skull Kid returning yet. Maybe….?
-
When Cloud was revealed, I figured speculating on new fighters for future Smash games was essentially out the window… And yet I never thought Ridley or K. Rool would ever get in. Yet here we are.
I really like how Simon is looking to be as a fighter. I haven't studied his moveset a lot yet but he seems to be great for zoning. I wouldn't want him to be too much like Mega Man, though, with his close combat moves serving as great punishers.
I feel like I might make him one of my top players, but then again I said the same for Little Mac and that never happened.
-
Awesome to have King K Rool and Simon Belmont playable :D
I wasn't expecting Richter Belmont to show up -
Ok, finally home time and I can type down thoughts and beliefs I have based on what we saw
Ramblings contained below:
! - Stages
I'm split on whether we have all the stages already or not.
On the one hand, I think it's fair to assume that them saying this number is the complete set that means we should expect no more newcomers from franchises not currently represented. This is an obstacle for third parties like Sora, Banjo Kazooie, and first parties from games like Rhythm Heaven, Golden Sun, etc.
BUT
Along with that claim we were later shown a stage that seems pretty Monster Hunter-y, and I can't really place where else that could have taken place. So the question is: is this a stage, or just part of w.e. the first player experience is? If the former, then that means we might still be able to expect entirely new stages. If the latter, then I don't think it's reasonable to expect significant representation from franchises not in smash already. At least not pre-DLC.
! - Echo fighters
Both Chrom and Dark Samus were predicted based on specific characters not having skins that referenced them anymore. Ike no longer had a Chrom-like skin, and Samus no longer had her Dark Samus skin. Also Chrom being a Roy Echo while having an Ike recovery is huge for me, and people have already said why.
Dixie Kong. The biggest obstacle to her being an echo has been Diddy's recovery being a distinctly Diddy trait. That is no longer an issue. Along with this, there is no evidence so far of Diddy Kong's Dixie-colors skin. Maybe I'm reaching because this to me is THE one character missing to make Smash feel complete, but where at first I was bummed that no presence in K. Rool's trailer was a con, now I'm pretty hyped about the possibility of her happening.
! The other really cool tidbit is that we can expect all these echoes to be revealed before release, so no more Dark Pit surprises like with the last game. Regarding what I expect, I think Dixie, Isabelle and Shadow the Hedgehog are the most likely ones right now. On this note
! - Characters
More than any Smash before the character selection so far feels fantastically robust. Where years before we always had certain characters that were either rather niche (Palutena) or overall initially undesired (Wii Fit Trainer, R.O.B.), this Smash every newcomer feels impactful and significant.
Inklings stand as repping Nintendo's most recent hyper-successful IP and it's a phenomenon particularly in Japan.
Ridley and K. Rool were fan desires since goddamn Melee and were particularly feverishly anticipated for Smash 4.
Simon (and Richter I guess?) represent one of the most significant gaming IPs in history that remained unrepped in Smash.
Even Echo fighters are essentially poll characters that were easy to adapt into existing fighters for easy fan-pleasing
! What this means to me is that I expect the standards for who makes it into Smash to be much, much higher. Where before I was expecting a flavor of the current gen pokemon, now I'm more leaning towards either no pokemon representation or any highly significant/popular mon regardless of generation. Same goes with Xenoblade… I've been low-key hoping for Elma, but in the back of my mind I now wonder "Is she really significant enough in gaming and in her IP to be in here with these other newcomers?"
! Because of this I'm now expecting very few remaining unique fighters, if any. And if so, we have to be talking hyper-significant characters. Main ones that come to mind are Geno, given his absurd popularity at the levels of K. Rool and Ridley, and reps from major third party companies not currently present that have a reason to work with Nintendo, the likes of Rayman or Banjo Kazooie. Which sounds absurd, but when you think about the impact of these characters, it's hard to imagine anything of greater impact. Well, perhaps not so much for Rayman, but there's a level of logic in expecting Nintendo + Ubisoft collaboration in this.
The main issue I have with this is what that would mean in terms of stages. It's weird to see these big-deal third parties happening without a respective stage. Geno I could see just being in the paper mario stage, but BK and whoever else would demand legitimate stage inclusion.
! Then, there's..
! - Bosses and Villains
This direct had a lot of bosses, and the K. Rool trailer made an effort to highlight villains. With this in mind I don't think it's unreasonable to think that the single player content that's currently hidden has to do with this.
This accounts for the Monster Hunter boss not having a stage we can really place, as well as accounting for the "specific conditions" in which Dracula bosses appear in the Castlevania stage. Maybe the single player involves going through something similar to melee's adventure mode, and each stage has a specific villain or boss fight? Whatever the case I don't think it's unreasonable to imagine something like this might happen.
Which is also why I think Shadow the Hedgehog is a reasonable echo fighter, since he works easily as another another antagonist in the game. And with Meta Knight and Wolf being billed as villains, Shadow would definitely get that same treatment.
! Conclusion:- I see as possible an adventure mode that involves fighting both general bosses as well as franchise heroes/villains
- I don't expect many new stages until DLC, unless it's a significant third party and Sakurai is a troll (which he is)
- Characters I expect: Dixie echo, Shadow echo, Isabelle echo, Geno, unexpected Pokemon character. If we're lucky, I can also see BK happening, maybe Rayman
- Just because it's my luck, watch everything I'm saying happen except Dixie Kong
also, thank fuck that we finally have a mode where characters rotate. It finally pays off to main multiple characters.
-
They finally fucking put in an official ironman mode into smash bros. What a time to be alive

Man. You just got me jonesing for Eggman/Robotnik up in this.
You get your villain. YOU get your villain! Everyone gets their villains! [/Oprah]

Speaking of "many more" on the items sections.
Stages doesn't has "many more". Fighters neither.

If the theory that all these villains are being gathered together for this new 'Subspace' story mode, then they could go all over the place. Robotnik boss, Fire Emblem boss (I'd imagine either Grima or Black Knight), Black Shadow boss, Medusa, etc.
My only dream is that in the center of this major collection of villains is Pious Augustus, the most horrifying of Nintendo's villains. That'll never happen, though…
Speaking of "many more" on the items sections.
Stages doesn't has "many more". Fighters neither.
Sakurai has confirmed that there will be more fighters in the Direct, though.
Personally, I theorize three more complete 'newcomers', so we can have an even 80. Not including Echo Fighters, of course.
-
It will be revealed that Eggman is in Smash Ultimate as a Sonic Echo
-
From Death and Dracula to Pious Agostous it isn't such a jump.
Yesterday from the time of the leak to the presentation, I had a weird hope that not a Belmont, but a Von Trepes would be the Castlevania representative, and I'm not talking about Junior or Soma, but Dracula himself. Alas, he's just a boss. <chrom-yamcha pose="">maybe he'll get his due another time.
Some series would be better served by their antagonist than their protagonists, main example that comes to mind is Golden Sun, (Alex is there more times than Isaac, Felix or Jr), Eternal Darkness, Arms (Well, all of the cast except the robot and the goop are more interesting that Spring Man and Ribbon Girl).</chrom-yamcha>

In light of Chrom having moves that are different from Roy,
What kind of excuse do we have now for not making Dr Mario an Echo Fighter? -
@Bond:
In light of Chrom having moves that are different from Roy,
What kind of excuse do we have now for not making Dr Mario an Echo Fighter?Being a veteran from Melee. Also, did Chrom toss the sword? of all the things that interested me of the direct, Chrom is almost at the bottom of the list.
Also, Repost of the list of stages, and a little reasoning for why they were removed, feedback is welcome:
! 3.- The missing stages are:
64: Planet Zebes, Sector Z
Melee: Icicle Mountain, Flat Zone, Mushroom Kingdom (nes), Pokefloats, Mute City
Brawl: Flat Zone 2, Rumble Falls, Pictochat
3DS: Pac Maze, Rainbow Road
WiiU: Miiverse, Jungle Hijinxs, Pyrosphere, Wooly World, Orbital Gate Assault
! 4.- Of these stages, they are either:
"Powercreeped": Planet Zebes (by Binstar), Sector Z (by Corneria), Mushroom Kingdom (By Mushroom Kingdom 64), Mute City (by Mute city (SNES), Port Town Aero Dive, and the Mario Kart 8 circuit), Flat Zone and Flat Zone 2 (by Flat Zone X), Pictochat (by Pictochat 2)
Not fun: Icicle Mountain, Rumble Falls (Vertical scrolling stages suuuuuuuck)
Require extra work: Miiverse (curating the comments or building a new platform as splatoon 2 did), Pokefloats (at the very least they should be floats, instead of solid models), Orbital Gate Assault (aparently it took a year to develop)
Confusion inducing: Pyrosphere (Ridley and cloned Ridley)
Requires specific hardware: Pac Maze (Required unique screens for the power pellet gimmick)
???: Wooly World, Rainbow Road (Prime candidates for DLC returning stages I guess)–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Well, Sakurai made it easy.
Chrom's up+B has the feeling of the aether, but he doesn't toss the sword, and he does go up and down, actually it seems to me more like Kirby's than Ike's.
Chrom's B can change directions a lot, but it seems like Roy can also do this now, in his video he's shown doing it.
His final smash is also unique.--- Update From New Post Merge ---
So, I'm avoiding my actual work and made this:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLSkVqIcqs–yD73LrAjytOeWr11bXgf61
Kind of sampling of the songs of the castlevania list:
- The new remix of vampire killer, I can't have it yet
- There are a couple made from both songs, I put both in, (Starker / Wicked Child) and (Bloody Tears / Monster Dance)
- Put the sample of Bloody Tears / Monster Dance
- Some I had to wiggle the translations or interpretations, (Like Gallery to Corridor)
- I can't find Ripped Silence, I had to use Piercing Silence (Portrait of Ruin), I'm not convinced
-
I'm saying happen except Dixie Kong
I hate to think negatively but…..I feel like it was a perfect chance for her to appear during the K. Rool trailer, either as an actual splash or a cameo at the end a la Dark Pit in Palutena's trailer. She'd distract K. Rool before he gets to pound DK and Diddy or something.
She was/is my most wanted newcomer, too.....but hey, still got four months to go, so who knows?
-
Has anyone noticed the purple and yellow chairs behind Sakurai?
-
https://www.reddit.com/r/castlevania/comments/95o6kq/here_are_the_songs_that_will_be_in_smash_bros/
The list of songs again, but this time in a readable format, made by that person.
-
Konami has been WAY more of a good sport in all of this, what with bringing Solid Snake, Bomberman, and now the world of Castlevania to Sakurai and his team.
Whereas Square is still "lol have two songs i guess"
-
Square colaboration until now:
Cloud Strife, the one playable character never to be protagonist on a nintendo platform of this game (and Richter now I guess)
and this:
Midgar, that sole salving grace is the summons of the whole series wrecking the city
This:
A dead chocobo head
The skinned body of geno
3 trophies, of Cloud -
now granted, Sakurai never said all the songs are unlocked from the get-go so maybe those were just the ones at base.
maybe.
maybe…..Castlevania gets 34 tracks, which fits this new theme of having all the songs correspond to series stages. So unless they're just gonna cram a lot of the "other" songs to Midgar, wouldn't there be more? I dunno.
-
It could be that's all Final Fantasy gets, but I do think we should be careful in avoiding assuming that the numbers given in the Direct are absolute. Granted, it is odd to give specific numbers… But this is in an August Direct for a game that is coming out in December. There are certainly more characters and stages to reveal, so looking at the numbers as indicative of the final game comes off as a little assuming to me. Sakurai spoke a lot in of context like "We have now reached …", for example.
-
I wouldn't expect Final Fantasy to get anymore.
I always wondered if Nintendo would buddy up with Microsoft to try and get Master Chief in, or Blizzard for something like Tracer. That be something.
-
Hmmm, that is true.
At the very least I found the castlevania soundtrack, and that's fine for now. That number did seem way more solid than the rest.
-
Microsoft should offer stuff up from the best thing Rare ever did: Viva Pinata.
Also make a Switch Viva Pinata game.
-
Just realized something, for some reason I thought that this:
Was a kid Icarus item, of the reapers, but no. It's Castlevania's Death's scythe. That is the weapon that ended Luigi… Neat!
-
@Cyan:
Microsoft should offer stuff up from the best thing Rare ever did for them.
Sorry to cut you down.
Konami has been WAY more of a good sport in all of this, what with bringing Solid Snake, Bomberman, and now the world of Castlevania to Sakurai and his team.
Now if only they can learn to treat their employees better and along with not letting their ips languish.
@Purple:
It will be revealed that Eggman is in Smash Ultimate as a Sonic Echo
Why not make him a DeDeDe echo :ninja:
Let's take this back to 2001.
-
Oh… oh wow.... just.... holy.... oh my....
DAMN! Just DAMN!
I wasn't expecting much, I was thinking we were gonna get like 2 characters. One completely new, and one Echo... but this.... daaaaaamn.
So much to unpack here... wow...
So, Stage-Wise I got EVERYTHING I WANTED!!!
- New Donk City revealed in its entirety!
- Brinstar Depths is back!!
- Paper Mario is back!!!
- FOUNTAIN OF DREAMS IS FREAKING BACK!!!! YEEEEESSSS!!!!
I also kinda wanted a new Majora's Mask Stage, maybe Clock Town with the gimmick being the Moon crashing down, but the Moon being an Assist Trophy works as well!
I wonder if you use the Moon on Termina Great Bay, will the Moon that's actually part of the background already be the thing that crashes in? That'd be a neat touch.
Speaking of, seeing Zero and Shovel Knight as Assist Trophies was also super bittersweet. I'm happy they're in there, but both would have been cool playable characters in their own right.
Also, Mimikyu!!!!! Best Pokemon is in the game! That’s amazing! I'm also surprised Noqanky didn't say anything about Alolan Vulpix
The included modes are awesome. Smash Squad is basically what GameXplain has been saying they wanted, and it happened, which I agree is an amazing idea. Smashdown too. That's going to make learning the entire roster super fun. My regular Smash parties with friends are gonna be even more awesome now.
The new training mode is amazing and really looks like Sakurai is trying hard to throw a bone to the competitive Smash community... He REALLY took the concept of "Ultimate" seriously.
And of course, I saved characters for last...
Simon Belmont I saw coming a mile away considering that pre-E3 leak, but Richter? This is unexpected but awesome. This is also the first time we've gotten two reps from the same 3rd party series too so that's an interesting door to open. Think we might get echoes from each?
Sakura? Big Boss? Bass? Shadow?
Speaking of Echoes: DARK SAMUS!!! I know she's just an Echo, but YEAH!! Now we have 4 Metroid reps! Our Metroid Representation DOUBLED in this game and I'm definitely happy about that. I can't wait to see how she plays that's different... In fact, I'd like that for every new Echo. Just a quick overview of what stats got changed. I REALLY Hope Daisy is good...
Also: KING K. FREAKING ROOL!!!!!!!!!!!! One of my 4 dream fighters is in!! HE LOOKS SO GOOD TOO!! I was hoping we'd get Captain K. Rool and Baron K. Roolenstein as alt costumes, but this is fine. I like that those two forms are represented in his moveset at least then.
Me and a few friends have a Smash team we call BBK: Big Beautiful Kings. I play as Bowser, and my friends Jessica ana Jarrad are Dedede and Ganon respectively. Looks like K. Rool might have to get looked at for inclusion here.
Oh, also Chrom is in the game. That's... a thing.
Another anime sword guy with basically Marth's moveset. That makes 7 Total Fire Emblem Characters... 4 of them Marths.... That's.... greeeeeeat.... When they inevitably add the MC from Three Houses, that's gonna be 8.... ugh....
For a second I thought it was going to be slightly better when I saw Aether and thought he was an Ike Echo but he's not? How does he have Aether then? Can Echoes have mishmash moves? What makes them an echo then? As long as all of their moves are taken from other fighters and none are 100% original?
I mean, that does give me hope for Dixie at least as others have said.
I've been assuming if we got Dixie she'd be a Diddy clone complete with Peanut Popgun and Jetpack etc but now she could be a hodgepodge and get an accurate representation.
Replace Up B with DK's Up B but make the animation her hair instead of arms, but make her hair's range shorter but make up for that by making her ascension higher and make it so that if you hold it at the apex, she can hover for a bit.
Make Neutral B the same as Mario's Cape except she whips her hair. Have it reflect projectiles, but also make it do minimal damage but cause a fair bit of hitstun to differentiate it.
Boom, done. Dixie is good. I'd be happy with this.
I'd be happier with 100% original Dixie, but this will work.
My dream fighter list is:
Geno
Dixie
King K. Rool
CronoC'mon Sakurai, give me just one more of them?
-
Decided to watch the direct again, and the language they used about the stages is that the total is "turning out to be impressive," and that there's 300+ stages including the omega and battlefield forms, which suggests more than 100 base stages. Now a lot of that is pretty murky and the latter could just be referring to the regular battlefields and final destination, but I think there's still room for more stages with the way they left it. I know there's a hell of a lot in this game, but it does seem a little weird to only introduce 4 new stages and have that all be revealed now.
-
I hate to think negatively but…..I feel like it was a perfect chance for her to appear during the K. Rool trailer, either as an actual splash or a cameo at the end a la Dark Pit in Palutena's trailer. She'd distract K. Rool before he gets to pound DK and Diddy or something.

Wouldn't Dark Samus have been fitting to reveal at the same time as Ridley too though?
-
@Count:
Wouldn't Dark Samus have been fitting to reveal at the same time as Ridley too though?
Well isn't Dark Samus a separate threat from Ridley, like wasn't the main plot point in Prime 2 was the dark phazon corrupting Samus? Whereas K. Rool is an enemy of all Kongs, Dixie even fought him twice.
But hey, I would be glad if I was wrong.
-
The presence of Monster Hunter stuff makes me think that a Big Boss Echo might actually happen. Because Big Boss beat the shit out of a bunch of Monster Hunter dinosaurs back in the 70s.
It would be an incredibly easy Echo to make, too. Just take the current Solid Snake design, give him an eye patch, paint the sneaking suit black, and put an MSF logo on his shoulder (replace cardboard box with the Love Box).
-
Blood Falcon? :ninja:
or maybe Black Shadow if we really want to go nuts.
-
All I want is an Old Snake alternate costume above all else from the Metal Gear franchise. I need a playable old man in this series and the only alternative is a playable Cranky Kong or Heihachi.
Speaking of alternate costumes, why has Ms. Pac-Man not been one yet? It would be so easy and we already have a couple gender design swaps. It's weird, especially since her game was huge in video game history.
Well isn't Dark Samus a separate threat from Ridley, like wasn't the main plot point in Prime 2 was the dark phazon corrupting Samus? Whereas K. Rool is an enemy of all Kongs, Dixie even fought him twice.

I understand the distinction. But my point is that if Metroid got a completely new villain character reveal and then an echo character reveal a couple months later, the same thing could happen to Donkey Kong when there's still roughly four months to launch day.
Add in how none of the echo fighters for this game have had their own cinematic trailers. Although Lucina shared one with Robin for Smash 4.
EDIT: Oh wait, I'm of course an idiot. Richter got a damn CGI trailer. Ugh…
Still, my point stands on the comparison.
-

On the subject of characters left, it's really hard to say. no one was expecting FIVE, maybe two at most. But in the interest of being conservative, I will say one more "new"comer and one more echo fighter.
-
The only echoes that get the prime time treatment have been Lucina (by saving Fire Emblem, and being better Marth than her dad, Marth, Roy and her other dad), Dark Pit (as a 5 second cameo) and Richter. Lucina and Pitoo were going to be like the koopa kids at that point in the planing stages, while Richter must have been chosen since Konami decided to stop being imbeciles.
Echoes by their nature are late aditions, as in "Ok, we have the full 70 people roster, who can we re-skin from the same series", so fitting them into the pipeline of animations would be a pain.
What I gather is that while this animation kinda deconfirms Dixie as her own character, says nothing about her chances as an echo.

My guess was "an orgy of echoes and one full character". 3 is not an orgy, but it will do.
-
I get playing expectations safe, I can't see why we would only have one more new character and echo character left if they feel confident enough to reveal FIVE new characters, two new and three echoes, in one direct.
I can see three all-new characters left for a solid 80 roster. Two at least, four at most. Same for echo fighters, which will hopefully include Dixie Kong and Shadow.
