Just letting you all know that I won't be able to do chapter comparisons this week, since I'm on a business trip to Chile and can't get the VIZ chapters from here. I will still be in Chile next Monday as well; I'll be coming home the following day, so hoping to have the comparisons for this chapter and next done by next Tuesday or Wednesday.
One Piece Chapter 879:One of Big Mom's Three Sweet Commanders, Katakuri.

Jimbei's speech in the VIZ version was worded very well, props again to Stephen. Afterward in this version Jimbei says "I'll help you identify sea currents!!" and while that isn't much different from the other fan version, the way its presented here just cements Jimbei as the future helmsman for the crew.
When I think of Jimbei, the Fishman Karate master, steering a boat super efficiently I'm reminded of southern Chinese martial artists from back in the day. The southerners were/are a little shorter, stockier and they were fisherman and farmers. They developed their styles with their fishing and farming professions in mind with a lot of low squatting and powerful stances. Even today you can see folks going up and down rivers on little rafts or boats practicing their arts while being perfectly in tune with the motion of the boat being rocked by water. Those southern styles are what were combined with traditional martial arts of Okinawa to birth Karate in our worlds Ryukyu Kingdom.
The similar names, the birth place of Karate/Fishman Karate and Ryukyu Kingdoms heavy involvement with maritime trade just fit too perfectly for Jimbei being the helmsman. I initially didn't like the thought that if Jimbei was good at manipulating water just make him the helmsman because it seemed way to shallow. Now though when I consider some real world history and Fishman Karate being the mastery of water, why not have the best water master steering a sheep helping the navigator identity sea currents? I used to look at steering the Sunny and Fishman Karate as completely separate skills but no so much any more.
Plus there is a lot going on between Nami and Jimbei. Their past, their present, their future are pretty intermingled and could make for some great development as the years go on. Them working together to lead the Sunny in a way that only they can could give us some great moments in the future.
I hope my thoughts are cohesive.

Would be cool if they taste like they are named.
"But what about the 'music-themed' ones (Opera, etc)".
They might not taste good, but they do squeal nicely when they are chewed. Some would say, it's music for Mama's ears.

Opera is a cake. Actually I googled him just before cuz I was thinking the same.

Only very! This was such a nice and thoughtful post that I almost called my coworker (who doesn't read One Piece, but I want her to) to come read it.

Cohesive? I agree with MrPecans. This passage warms my heart.

For reasons like that I also subscribed to the comixology version of english WSJ because you are able to access the issues independent of your region/ip

Your post was awe-inspiringly insightful to read. I already liked the prospect of Jimbei's Fishman Karate being connected to his helmsmanship, but this kind of inspiration takes it to a whole other level. And to think of all the years where people looked at people supposedly overanalyzing that one period between Impel Down and Marineford of Jimbei helming a ship as being desperate or naive.
Plus there is a lot going on between Nami and Jimbei. Their past, their present, their future are pretty intermingled and could make for some great development as the years go on. Them working together to lead the Sunny in a way that only they can could give us some great moments in the future.
Let me also add onto this. I'm probably looking too into this and I don't know if Oda thinks this way, but if Nami is putting enough faith in Jimbei to helm the ship and Jimbei is following Nami's orders in where and how to direct the ship, they are both trusting one another with their lives and their dreams. Considering how much their backstories are tied to each other, all of the racial oppression and cycle of hatred controversy that is associated with, as well as that scene, Jimbei's apology and Nami's forgiveness in Fishman Island thinking about what you said in this paragraph sounds so beautiful to me. Like things are coming full circle with racial equality and bonds being the greatest treasure in the series.
Nami directing everybody and the ship's navigation while keeping track of weather hazards, Jimbei helming the ship with sea current information and maybe water manipulation/sea creature calls, Usopp manning the Gaon Cannon with sniper precision, and Franky managing the cola barrels to activate Coup de Burst while repairing the ship. That is the dream team right there.
I swear, if Oda goes back on his word on considering sea battles for Wano Country from that one interview…
-
Whoa, Oda said we'd get sea battles in Wano!? Noice
-

He said he's considering it. Key word on CONSIDER. He joked about possibly backing out on that. If he does, we riot.

I don't have anything else to say than either you or others who commented after you haven't said already. But I still feel compelled to say that this right here… is some awesome shit. Really really awesome. When I thought Jinbe's position in the crew couldn't make more sense, you just have to go and give it an even more poetic meaning.

Give this guy a medal, now I can't unsee Jinbei's purpose in the crew. But, also, now I feel like any additional crewmates have to have some very compelling reasons to earn their place in the crew.

But doesn't Carrot do a great standout job of fitting the lookout role by being able to jump really high?

Yeah! Carrot's chances for joining just skyrocketed really high!

Hahahahaha Alright alright…
And yeah, if he's only teasing I'm totally down to riot. Sea battles against both other ships and sea monsters, to me, are sourly lacking in the series. I want an action One Piece RPG of quality that fixes the series by adding that stuff in retroactively.

I mean, if we ever get to see the Pluton ship...what a cool boss battle! The Sunny vs an ancient weapon? Too too cool.

Since Friday. Chapters are going to release on Friday from now on because of manga leakers getting arrested.
-
Thanks guys!
I was quoted so many times I thought for sure I said something seemingly inflammatory, phew! I only wish I didn't misspell ship and identify, lol.
And I probably should have actually said the name of One Piece's location I was referring to, the Ryugu Kingdom, in comparison to the real Ryukyu Kingdom.

Spoilers are a tough business, I see. This change will get some used to.
On the other hand, of what I read so far, Jinbei's spirit lifting speech was just, wow. It would really be something if the rain was to hide his tears since everyone else was crying for Pedro's (supposed) death.

I think this little set up with Katakuri is definitely leading to another gear.
A continued flashback with rayleigh on the non body taxing ability will be seen.
Gear fourth is brute strength. I'm curious as to what it will be.Luffys gear second got outmatched by Katakuri, this is oh so very interesting.

Im still betting on a speed version of gear 4, only two modes seems low for oda
-
I'm thinking we might see the base version of Tankman. How obese is Luffy normally? Can he bounce around like some kind of, well, cannonball?
-
I think Oda is setting Perospero up to get gloriously knocked out.
Sea water plus electro = that's possible knockout [emoji23]

I'm really hoping for a vulcanized rubber form that comes at the cost of him losing his stretchyness while in the form. He'll probably expand his body to the max and then quickly draw his elasticity back in compacting himself and then use Haki to harden his blood or something to stay in this form. Probably be on fire and dark/shiny.
-
@Long:

That wouldn't be a bad bet.
It would be cool to see another gear 4th form. Maybe this one is less taxing than boundman.Boundman was for big beasts at the time.
-
The next step for Gear would probably be some form of Vulcanization. However, the effects would probably be irreversible, and Luffy would end up sacrificing his range for the durability and strength.
-
So apparently Katakuri's devil fruit originally was Logia, but a lot of people were asking (in Japan) why Mochi was classed as a Logia.
Mainly because the Japanese read Logia as 自然系 which means natural class. As we all know Logias need to be something of Nature. So instead it was changed to 特殊な超人系 which means special paramecia. They had to edit the magazine for it.
Logia like abilities but they're in a paramecia. Normally the natural substances are able to reform but so is Mochi.

Well, technically, Swamp was pushing the envelope already since it's a Biome, specifically a forested wetland, and not a natural element like Lava, Sand, Fire, Wind (if Dragon has this), Ice, etc. There was also that Jelly Logia, but that one wasn't canon. I'm just waiting for that Seaweed Logia boss to show up…
-
Oh, so it was because of whining.
And here I thought there was a more elaborate reason.
-

Don't forget, as soon as we came back from the time skip Luffy pullled of Elephant Gun for the first time and used the word vulcanization. He does it already when anything goes black I suppose.

Oda aint taking away luffy's powers, hos stretching is too iconic, it'd be like if sanji starting to throw fists or zoro quit using his swords.

Yeah I thought vulcanization was the hardening with haki and the ability to set it at alight. The fire fists will definitely come into play in the coming chapters, we need to see some food df users being cooked alive. If water made the hard biscuits soggy for Luffy to break down and eat then the fire should enable him to cook some mochi to replenish his energy throughout this fight, could be how he overcomes gear fourth's weakness again lol.
-

Hmmm I thought that was confirmed a mistranslation but I could be wrong.
-

Maybe you're right. I'll look it up.
Edit: Yup, you're right. At the very least in the VIZ version it just says hardening and nothing about vulcanization. So I take back my previous statement.
-
I just hope Luffy doesn't pull out a random move out of his *** from when he trained on that island. It's already ridiculous enough that the animals were apparently strong enough for luffy to have the need to learn Gear 4. If he know also learned gear 5 from that Island, then dammit! Catch those stupid animals and send them fighting against the the Yonkos and the World Government, because apparently they are the strongest beings in the world.

If One Piece has showed anything, it's that there's creatures all over the place who are capable of doing some freaky shit, but don't always belong in the world's power struggle
But really, there's no need to worry about Luffy going beyond Gear Fourth right now when he hasn't even activated it yet. Sometimes imagination chains run a bit too wild in these chapter threads.
-
The possibility of a new gear kinda went out of the window when Luffy showed that gear fourth has several different transformations. At best, we can see a third one, which would be the one that allows him to beat Katakuri. Unless he has a fourth that combines each element (Boundman, Tankman, x) of gear fourth into one. I would rather it stay in a third transformation.
Gear fifth will probably be related to Awakening.

Which chapter was it?
–- Update From New Post Merge ---
Actually a translation for the word 硬化 is vulcanization along with hardening.
Not sure if its unique to Luffy because im sure everyone is hardening themselves but not saying Kouka (硬化) -
In Chapter 784 it's revealed that Luffy's body parts lose their rubbery properties when covered in Haki, the exception being Gear Fourth when his entire body is inflated and becomes bouncy.

I'm still trying make sense of how that's supposed to be logically consistent. I guess you could say that Culverin moving in such straight and rigid directions still counts as not being fully elastic, which I like to believe.
-
@Kaido:

Wait, really? Huh. Does that mean Haki, or at least Armament Haki, is just something that is generally incompatible with df powers as a whole? For example, I don't think we've ever seen a logia use their elemental state with haki, like Smoker never using "black smoke" on PH and only using Haki with his fists/feet. That might be a reason why Katakuri was changed to a special paramecia, so he could stretch his limbs and stuff while keeping the ability to coat them with Haki afterwords.
-
Just give up on rationalizing colour of armaments. It was not invented right and it will never become right. We should just assume that Oda had the other 2 colours of Haki planned for a long time and then thought of how some power was needed to beat logias and merged it with the other 2 things as parts of the same power system. But it's never been consistent since the start, and it doesn't seem to be getting better.
-
Haki can go on logias like a coat but you cant have haki embued logia like smoker cant become black smoke or akainu cant have haki on lava and then shoot it at someone so the haki goes through a logia and they get the lava
-
@No:

Well, we TECHNICALLY had that with Katakuri before he became a "Special Paramecia". :ninja:
