Well.. as a revival of the thread due to the latest chapters. Takamura is getting worse, actually, he's getting jealous big time of Ippo and how much he's being pampered. The new Dempsey Roll has been a long time coming, but we're finally starting to see what people had been guessing all a long. Punches slammed from every direction and the ability to stop them at any time. We've been seeing this coming since the Scratch J fight, where he threw a uppercut from the Dempsey Position. I noticed something awhile back though, I think Aoki is going to end up losing to Shinobu again and retiring. It's been hinted at heavily that Kimura is going to go up a weight class, and the fact that he is fighting in a weight class below is holding him back significantly. He'll be the one to take Shinobu down.
^ You've been bit by the bug that's apparently reeking havoc on people's posts.

I don't think takamura is that jealous, well maybe of Ippos size down there, he just knows Ippo doesn't have what it takes to be the best from a mental standpoint. Ippo still runs around the line in the sand Takamura drew, which shows he's still holding himself back.Dempsey roll upgrade, more training, none of that is going to matter if he doesn't have his mind right.

Takamura is just disappointed in Ippo. He had big hopes for him but Ippo has been lacking in spirit ever since he lost his goal of facing Miyata. Even with his new move, his spirit is still lacking. Takamura will only change his mind once Ippo burns with unwavering spirit once again.

How I see it, I have a feeling Ippo won't be the one to take Martinez down. It'll be Sendo or Miyata. Then bam, he has a goal again.I'm still sort of focused on the Kimura/Aoki storyline - As it really does feel like Aoki is going to lose again and Kimura will move up into his more comfortable weight class and turn out to be some sort of god at boxing.

I would think his desire to go try his luck on the world stage against much stronger and renowned opponents would be a much better (and less shallow) goal. Mr. I Got My Ass Roughed Up by A Jobber In My Last Match better go sit his ass down.

No way. Martinez looks even more untouchable than Takamura. Takamura, despite winning every time, at least took a beating from Hawk and Eagle too. Martinez however, we've never even seen him struggle. He took a few punches against Date, but that's it.
Takamura is just jealous Ippo is coach's favorite.

Between Takamura's eye problems and now Ippo's apparent brokenness I don't know.

It's not. Ippo is chickening out from stepping over some imaginary line Takamura drew on some dirt. He's afraid and refuses to fully commit himself mentally. Well, a reason to look forward to him making a character developement in future.
Character devolepment doesn't really exist in this manga though.Pretty much all problems are resolved with "you need more determination ippo/takamura/other character!".At this point I wouldn't be suprised if the coach gives up his job to become a motivational speaker.

Don't know it Nekota overcame his brain damage via those methods:ninja:

This last chapter was a downer - They had to add some realism to a boxing manga.
I mean, if the Miyata match was of any indication, we got lighting fists going on and Morikawa had to add a very real Brain Damage arc. >_>

For the second time given he already did this with Nekota.
For the second time given he already did this with Nekota.
TRUE!
But this is the main character of the series.
If this is of any indication though, I can see Ippo begging to stay in and the Coach going, "Okay, but we need to teach you not to block with you face."
Cause Ippo is really good at that… blocking with his face.
^ To be fair blocking punches lowers the chances of brain damage it doesn't flat out prevent it. That's what footwork is for and we know that Ippo's not good at that despite how much he uses his feet and his bobbing and weaving.
Morikawa had to push this manga really forward. Hence, Ippo = broken.
If the coach is going to teach him anything,it will be to break the opponents fist with his head rather than not get hit.Everyone knows willpower is inversely proportional to your damage meter. It doesn't make for an interesting fight if someone wins from trying their hardest from the start.Essentialy all of this mangas char devolopment happens during a fight where the characters reflect on the meaning of boxing/life/etc..Only problem is that after 1000 chapters two out of three characters have fleshed out their basic character and the third one breaks physics and all his actual fights end up like sonic versus the hulk.
Morikawa had to push this manga really forward. Hence, Ippo = broken.
Could've did so without having Takamura acting even more like a selfish and somewhat hypocritical douche though. And without the whole capriciousness of bringing Ippo down, then raising his spirit back up.
Brain damage can be healed with enough training and japanese willpower.

Tell that to Joe.
This might have been a riveting story arc…800 chapters ago. At chapter eleven thousand and fifty two, come the fuck on Morikiawa, you're doing this NOW, just get to the point and stop wasting our time.
Far too much effort, focus and time was spent showing Ippo not crossing the line drawn by Takamura and on people saying and wondering if Ippo had gotten weak (ever since his spar with Sendo or even before that) for this to be simply a case of brain damage.
Ippo might have physical damage, but, if he has it, it will be a form of non permanent damage and the true focus will be about his mentality. Perhaps a real health scare and the thought of not getting to box again is the first step for a change in his mindset.
I also think that something other than just talking and thinking needs to happen. Ippo needs a catalyst to explode.
I think Ippo could suffer of being punch drunk (build up brain collisions that end up careers) but I think this time its mostly motivational issue.
Ippo does not have a clear goal or willpower to achieve it. He does not want glory or recognition. He wants to fight against Miayata and know what is to be strong, of course he would like to be world champion but its no passion or real drive to him. Ippo does not want to commit or sacrifice, he wants things to stay as they are and keep boxing for sake of boxing, though he has taken absurd amount of punishment during his career and won many of his fights with sheer willpower and won fights that he had no rights to win at technical level by being stubborn, body and specially brains can only take so much.

It would've made sense 800 chapters ago if Morikawa knew that far back he was going to wind up with over 1000 chapters
under his belt.
no idea where this is going
no idea where this is going
I think this is the author cry for help, this is not about Hippo anymore.
I think Morikawa has realized that shit has gone on too long and needs to make something important happen.
no idea where this is going
This last chapter seems to be in line with the scenario I imagined in my last post when I said: "Perhaps a real health scare and the thought of not getting to box again is the first step for a change in his mindset."
Ippo won't have permanent damage but it will trigger a change in his mindset, which is what he needed.
For a second when I saw the chapter of ippo clutching his face in despair I was ready to take back what I said about this arc being predictable and a repeat of what always happens in this series. Then I saw the next chapter and it ended up being predictable and a pretty much a repeat of what always happens in this series.I hope what rereboy said happens atleast an ippo doesn't brush it off with willpower.
Kamogawa is the worst coach though:
"hmm this kid could have permenant brain damage and he's clearly doing this to impress me.On the other hand I could get a cool trophy and pretend I did all the work because I trained him.Tough decision."
I think Morikawa has realized that shit has gone on too long and needs to make something important happen.
Well besides Ippo and Kumi finally having their first kiss or Sendo actually going for Martinez which was hinted at like 400-500 chapters ago?
Kamogawa is the worst coach though:
You mean other than the one who coached Shigeta and the one who had no qualms repeatedly letting Nao foul Ippo during their fight.
And of course Shinoda.

I disagree. He took every precaution. He had Ippo take every relevant medical test and he even made Ippo draw the line in front of him because he decided, correctly, that he couldn't trust Ippo to be truthful. And after the test was negative (a straight line) he still forbade Ippo from even coming to the gym for a whole month.
Basically, Ippo's coach has taken every precaution that he can take. Much more than that and he would be forcing Ippo to retire even though there's no actual symptoms of him being punch drunk. His job in this case is to take every precaution that he can so that the risk of Ippo's fighting is no greater than normal, and he has done so.

Kamogawa essentially did the same thing that shigetsu coach did during a fight though.Nao's coach atleast had the excuse of being poor iirc.
No disagreement from me about Shinoda though. He literally can't train people. The only person who even suceeded with his training is a demigod in human flesh.

But it was pretty easy to see that ippo was trying to hide something considering the number of times he hesitated to draw the line.It doesn't exactly make much sense to say there are no symptoms when even Takamura noticed something was wrong with ippo and even the coach said that ippo might try to lie when asked if there was something wrong with him.
I was exaggerating when saying he is the worst coach but most of the point still stands.Kamogawa's motivation to train ippo comes in large due to him wanting to believe ippo only suceeds due to him.Kamogawa is irresponsible to let a 20 year old(I don't actually remember his actual age) continue to use a stratergy that always leaves him with incredibly heavy physical damage and pretend that has no permenant effects.I might be misremembering but I believe that one of ippo's opponents(evil countering guy) actually suffered from punch drunkeness and crashed his motorbike. That was a guy who's stratergy was not to get hit and he still got punch drunk after two serious matches.
In the end im just dissapointed at the lackluster resolution more than anything else.
But it was pretty easy to see that ippo was trying to hide something considering the number of times he hesitated to draw the line.
If his coach wasn't as good and correct as he is, he just wouldn't be so diligent about it, looking out more for his own interests than Ippo's. But he did everything that he should to look out for his fighter, even against the fighter's will.
It doesn't exactly make much sense to say there are no symptoms when even Takamura noticed something was wrong with ippo and even the coach said that ippo might try to lie when asked if there was something wrong with him.
All that Takamura ever talked about with Ippo was about motivation and being able to do it and never about health, so if Takamura had suspicions of Ippo being punch drunk and not simply having a motivation issue, then Takamura is far worse than Ippo's coach. Kamogawa simply hadn't seen anything that made him think that Ippo could be punch drunk, just like everyone else didn't, including the rest of the coaches at the gym and the other fighters at the gym. If we are to assume that Kamogawa didn't see it because he was blinded by his own selfish dreams, then what about everyone else?

He has trained him according to what he is good at, simply put. If Ippo could fight and dodge like Miyata, Kamogawa would train him differently. Despite that, Kamogawa has never made light of defense, always criticizing Ippo for getting hit too much and training him in ways that also take defense in great consideration.

He actually stood up for himself in this chapter. Even Miyata was surprised.
"Do, or do not. There is no try."

And it's chapters like these that make me want to kick Ippo in the balls. Hopefully he'll get over himself soon. Or maybe it's just Takamura getting in my head.

Get into your head so he can get you into his bed.
And I know it's been sometime since I spontaneously caught up on all the chapters that followed after Ippo jobbed but…...they're just now setting up his return match?
In this panel Takamura looks like a serial killer .___.
Dude, haven't you seen his matches? He IS a serial killer.

Yeah, but it seems to feel different when he makes this expression out on a quiet road, a broodier atmosphere, partially hidden under the coat, etc.
Just seems scarier.
