Food Wars - It's In the Trash

Nice callback to the training camp arc where Gin recognise the name Yukihira & about him rejecting all those offers to work for Totsuki.
Joichirou is a really terrible friend.lol
So, Joichirou only came back to Japan after many years. Perhap he met Soma's mum oversea & they chose to settle in Japan…I'm glad they skip through the training part.
I'm still wondering where the hell is Isshiki & co.
-
I'm glad haughty Erina is back, she's much more entertaining than the meek mouse we've had for the past 80 chapters
-
Setting a condition filled with such resentment… Central is so finished once the arc reaches its climax.
-
Considering how insignificant & useless Central has been, it doesn't matter if they get destroyed at the end. They barely had apresence.
On a random note, I'm betting our next "villain" will be Soma's grandmother which Joichirou totally "foreshadowed" during the Autumn Election arc./jk
-
From what I understand there's one more person in the central team (5 elite ten vs 4 challengers plus the respective bosses)
-
Did we ever saw what happened to Mimikasa?
-
Soma's mum oversea & they chose to settle in Japan…
They'd make a point of YukiHira being a 'Hafu' if that were the case. His mother is almost certainly japanese, that's the way japanese culture works.
-
There are also the other two seats replacements, so the central team could get to 7.
From the rebels, there are at least the 3 deposed seats, and (mimikasa, hojo and creepy girl)
-

We don't know nothing about Soma's mom though. She could still be half-japanese mix with other asians blood. There are few characters in the series who are half-Japanese with Japanese surname.
Or she could have been on holiday oversea when she met Joichirou. -

Or she could have been a Japanese person living elsewhere. Maybe Saiba tried to unwind in Hawaii.

Alice has a big role in the chapter, so therefore it is a great chapter.
As for everyone gathered, not surprised by three of the people they gathered, but the fact that the old third seat joined, who we know nothing about seems really strange. Part of me thinks it's strange we got to the cook off this fast, but I see things like how this chapter went, have something happen in the present then flashback to see how all this stuff happened. I am a bit hopeful that this part will actually be good, mainly because we are finally cutting to the strength of the series which is the cooking.
-
Man, they're really pulling out all stops for the series climax. This match has like… no people that I care about in it?
-
Is it really going to be the series climax? Though this isn't my favourite manga, it's the one I most look forward to reading every week.
-
Just when I was about to drop the manga for a while…Alice showed up. Awesome.
Nice to see the other rebels too. I love Hisako but please stop with the whole "Erina-sama schtick"
Not at all surprised by the presence of the 3 ex-E.10 members. What kind of drug was that announcer girl on?
Soma is totally going to beat the 6th seat girl...Sigh. Hoping that Ishiki is actually more superior than her.
Isshiki & ex3rd seat are totally going to win their match too. Does anyone even care about their unnamed opponents or them?I'm suprised Ishiki isn't in a naked apron...
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Man, they're really pulling out all stops for the series climax. This match has like… no people that I care about in it?
Not even Megumi?!
Is it because they are all plot armoured or there's simply no tension so there's no worry?
Also, is it because the enemy are 1-dimensional character? This series isn't ending. We still have the world stage tournament mentioned in Joichirou's flashback.

I meant this specific 3v3, but even overall, there's just Takumi and Megumi, who's names coincidentally rhyme.
Our vanguard here, though, has Soma, a completely static main character, Isshiki who's just been chilling in the background for half the series, and some other guy. Mechashiva? Whatever. Someone. Fighting against a squad of rando bad guys.
I don't mind plot armor so much, since it's expected at this point. If you have a protagonist like, say Homer Simpson, he's not going to lose to a villain like Frieza in the final showdown. I can accept that. But this is like if a bland main, say Ichigo, was joined by the dog from Johnny Test to take down that guy with the fez from the first Austin Powers movie.

LOL.
I agree. Nene & the other 2 are pretty much generic enemy.
Soma is Soma. The other 2 just showed up out of nowhere after disappearing for a good chunk of the arc.
There's no investment.I'm expecting Soma's group to win the first few matches & the other side turn the tide. Soma & Erina are going to be the last 2 remaining.
-
Azami still can't brainwash as good as Asano.
-
This manga is ending so much I can taste it.
-
Now I have the impression we won't know a thing about Soma's mom… Which would take this series from bad to...
Man, they're really pulling out all stops for the series climax. This match has like… no people that I care about in it?
Now don't look at it as a clash of people but as a clash of dishes. Bon apetite! :-)
-
Well, as long as we have fun its OK that it ends.
The blue tournament thingie is a way to continue, or to conclude, but that depends on the popularity of this arc.
-
Just when I was about to drop the manga for a while…Alice showed up. Awesome.
Only to explain that their role from now on is to cheer for Soma like proper background characters. Really very awesome.
.
Just as a related thought: People here had argued that we didnt need to see any of the fights from Alice&Co against the Elite10 for story reasons or because it would have been unneccesary or whatever. But wouldnt we care at least a bit more about the enemy fighters, if we had seen them before defeating and expelling the good guys? Or be a bit more hyped about the upcoming fight?__
Another thing: The reason that some of the former Elite10 join Team Soma is because they want their seats back.
For what reason? They didnt lose any shokugekis or any fights (or did I miss something??); they were just kicked out. What is stopping them from being kicked out again? Isnt the Elite10 in its current form completely worthless to measure ones worth or rank? -
I'm looking forward to Nene's match with Soma. She's supposed to be the strongest second year by a wide margin so It'd be nice if she came out with the win. I like her because she seems pretty normal compared to the rest of the elite 10 who are all a bunch of weirdos but then her fitting right in with them vicariously makes her a weirdo.
-
This is gonna be so good.
And that double page, I shall save it up in my folder.

Isnt the Elite10 in its current form completely worthless to measure ones worth or rank?I believe the scenario is, if the rebels win and get the Elite 10 Seats (or rather 8), they can then vote Azami out as headmaster, just like what happened to Senzaemon when 6 of 10 voted him out and replaced him with Azami. Once Azami is out, they won't have to fear the new headmaster kicking them out just because they don't agree with the headmaster's ideals.

Souma and his gang are ready to put an end of the Central's tyranny! They are going to save their friends! The long-awaited matchup against the so-called strongest cooks in the school! All of these are supposed to get my adrenaline pumping yet I feel…. nothing.
I miss those days when I was super hyped about the Elite 10.
-
Elsewhere, everyone is HYPED up about the matches. Lol
Other than the early AE match & training camp arcs, i wasn't hype at all about any of the future matches. 3-way finale, Soma vs Eizan, Ryou vs someone, Soma vs Hayama, Soma vs Tsukasa. And especially this finale.Personally, I'm glad that the arc is ending soon. Hopefully, the author can go back to what make the series good again.

-
Because AP is that kind of place. How sad…
Kinda. People's opinions are fine of course, but it's always so negative here.
-
It's not like the negativity comes from nowhere. Nor is it purposeless. It helps us define what we do and do not like, so that we can have a deeper appreciation for the things we do enjoy, and know when to avoid the things we don't. If anything, I think that unquestioning positivity shows a lack of appreciation for a series, since you're ignoring some important aspects of the series and its writing (unquestioning negativity is just as bad, but that isn't what's going on here).
There's a lot of things to be enjoyed about Soma, a lot of which has been interfered with by a series of questionable writing decisions most apparently starting with Azami (but I think which can be traced back to the Autumn Election arc, where the flaws were still within an acceptable limit). If we're talking about this current fight, my problem with it is that it's all very rushed. Within a handful of chapters, we lost half of the core cast offscreen, had them suddenly replaced by a group of dudes we either haven't seen in a while (or, in the case of Mechashiva, at all), and they're being pit against an antagonist that has had no build up whatsoever, which I think is the most egregious thing.
Subaru in his initial arc was featured in two fights, got some character interactions and backstory in between the matches, and had personal stakes invested in his match, allowing him to develop as a character in the aftermath. And he was just the flunky of one E10 member. Nene is one of the E10, the ultimate supercooks on campus, and has maybe had a few lines total? Of the six remaining E10, only half of them have had any amount of buildup, and one of those is Rindou, who's build up has just been through a few noteworthy character interactions. If this is the climactic arc in Soma, which it really appears to be, then our final (or penultimate) bosses are mostly faceless mooks, no better than that corporate lady who tried to shut down the diner in the first chapter. This series sells itself on characters and food, and the biggest antagonists are barely characters. We can only hope they make good food.
-
!
I usually don't salt a lot but this manga has been a disappointment after disappointment since the Central Arc for me. Its like the writers forgot what made the series good and well loved in exchange of yawn-worthy plotlines, and a failed attempt at creating stakes and drama that readers would care about. Character development had become static for many characters (Souma himself), downright forgotten (Isshiki-senpai) or …. looks at Hayama in favour of Erina, a painfully stereotypical and uninteresting character. I sort of miss the earlier parts of her being an arrogant but fun-to-watch biatch. Heck, I won't even mind if the story went on the predictable plotline of Souma and co. defeating the Elite 10 one by one and finally challenging his dad, then make Erina accept his food or something (I don't like the ship itself, but it has been clear since early chapters that it was the end goal ship so eh) and wrap things up with a neat bow. Anything other than the abomination of a villain known as Azami who makes Aizen looks well-written, with plans so ridiculous but somehow failing to be entertaining in any way at all.For a group hyped since the start the Elite 10 themselves had been underwhelming. Like for some of the seats, what can you describe about their character? Uh... the guy with a katana. Big dude with a fuzzy hat. Your typical loli. Serious glasses girl. Their personalities? Wait.... They were supposed to be a colourful array of freaks of nature in cooking, yet this battle feels like a battle against some random faceless dudes. I just can't feel any tension and bring myself to care about whats happening.
Its really a huge shame because this manga had been one of my favourites in the past and I just feel that the writers could do so much better than this. Hence the gratuitous amount of salt.
--- Update From New Post Merge ---
Ah, got ninja'd by the goat.

We still don't have a good idea why the E10 voted Azami in, besides for shits and grins. The whole basis of this arc is just so weird. In the middle of the school year, some powerful students democratically overthrow the school's director, in favor of a dude who was banned for life, and outright loathed by many of the school's staff and affiliates, then he proceeds to thoroughly change the entire school's curriculum, dissolve almost all of its student organizations, and dismantle several perfectly good buildings that still could have been used for anything.
I know mentioning all of this is beating a dead horse, but it occurred to me in this chapter that the sudden body, portrayed as utterly brainwashed and free of agency in their support for Azami, actually has a legitimate point. They've actually succeeded under Azami's weird curriculum, in a school that they would have been flunked from just a few months prior, and this is the end of the term, so some of them are graduating. Now Soma and the gang are threatening to overthrow Azami, and massively change the curriculum again before the term's over. If I were those students, I'd be scared as hell about the status of my education and degree, especially at a school that's both so prestigious and expensive. It makes me feel like the author never put much thought into this, and has just been swinging through the motions of some generic shonen storytelling.
-
Sigh The "If is not written like I want is bad" argument strikes back. Some people still believe there's an universal rule in telling stories that must be followed through and through and that trying new forms of narrative is not allowed. If ir was incoherence and contradiction of what was established I would still understand, but that is not the case.
Opinions are like assholes, so whatever suits you better.

That's a pretty mindless read of al the points Crys and I just made. Did you actually read out posts?
Some people still believe there's an universal rule in telling stories that must be followed through and through and that trying new forms of narrative is not allowed.
There are many rules in successful storytelling. They can be played with and defied, but only to success when the author is paying attention to what they're doing. That's sort of besides the point, though, since the problems I contended were that the current arc is rushed, which is pretty apparent by how they've neglected and sidelined half of the cast, and that the series is following generic storytelling motions for the genre, which is the opposite from 'trying new forms of narrative'. Rather, by sticking closely to conventions and acting as if they've been implemented correctly, the author's made a story that's inconsistent with and disconnected from the world he built before this arc.
If ir was incoherence and contradiction of what was established I would still understand, but that is not the case.
Opinions are like assholes, so whatever suits you better.
It is all sorts of incoherent, though. My last post was about how Azami's schemes are broader than the author cares to account for, leading to confusing and inconsistent portrayals of the students' reaction to their weird situation. My post before that was on the inconsistency of the character writing, in how the E10 have received no build up compared to their mooks, when they're portrayed as being so much more important, and being placed as antagonists in such a pivotal part of the story.
I'm not sure why I'm arguing with you, though. I want to be able to hold a conversation, but you aren't offering much besides insults and retorts. It's not that we're arguing "it's not written like I want, it's bad," but more like you're arguing "I like it, so people who hate it are wrong no matter what, I don't need to explain myself." If you like it, argue what you like about it, and I'll be happy to listen (and will probably still argue it, since that's the nature of discussion). It'll be a chance to engage more with the series you enjoy. If you think we're being negative, then be positive about it. Don't just be negative about negativity.

I'm taking the bait. I know it's the Nekketsu modus operandi. I will always remember him as the guy who suggested Shirahoshi as the next nakama while dismissing Jinbe's chances during the Fishman Island arc. He's also suggested Rebecca as a strong candidate.
Some of the biggest fans are the biggest critic. Look at Greg. You can love a series but yet be critical of it. It's our love for this series that we are criticising it. I hate the mentality "if you criticising a series, you a HATER" & the famous "Just because it doesn't go your way, it doesn't mean the series is bad".
We actually spend time to criticise the series, write up a post etc. If we hate a series, we won't even be writing any posts. Just think of a series you love as a metaphorical child. If they are doing something wrong, we scold them. We want the best of them. This arc has been getting mixed review across the board. It can go from top 5 to bottom 5 at anytime. A whole sub-arc was literally cancelled because the Japanese fans hated it. It's not just us, arlong park people are criticising this arc. Even users on reddit are criticising it. Most of them on reddit criticise Azami & his nonsensical system. There was a chapter where almost everyone on reddit hated it.Reddit users are the easiest fans to please… Even in mangahelper forum, we are critical of Azami & his nonsensical system.

Sub-arc? What?
Even so, the negativity is I dare say quite excessive. This arc has some and I would say more than you think good things. Though that depends on one's opinion, afterall.
Let it be.

Now we are talking about the series in its whole or about this current arc in particular? Didn't I tell you already? It's all my opinion, so whether you take it or not is completely irrelevant.
I guess my opinions are not well regarded, as I'm one who liked Erina's character from the start, and like her even more now she's no longer a manifest alpha bitch. Stereotypical and uninteresting? Nonsense!

Sorry, I absolutely hate this argument.
You don't enter this business with the mindset that nobody is going to criticise you & everyone is going to love your work. It's part of the job. In fact, criticism is what helps the writer grow if they are willing to learn. For example: Harry Potter was rejected 12 times. JK rowling took every criticism she got by the publishers & refined the series as she keep getting rejected. She made a best seller.
Editors also helped the writer a lot as they give their feeedback to improve the series further.
There are authors that are grateful to fans who took their time to criticise their works even if it's harsh. It means that someone actually cares for their work. Of course, there are authors that attack their reviewers & whine about how badly people are treating their precious baby. I would never read any of those author's works.Honestly, people will get criticised by others especially their superior in every job. It's not just exclusive to creative-related job. You just have to develop a thick face & deal with it.

The survival hunt. The one with Ryou vs somebody. It was definitely intended to be longer but it ranked so badly, it was cut short.
The positive thing I can say is Erina getting character development & the Soma x Erina getting development. That's all.I'm still iffed by Alice's character being reduced to comic relief. Seriously, she started out as a potential rival to Erina. She was a genius & was only second to Erina in the buffet challenge. Now, she's just there to make Erina look better.

In what ways does she break stereotypes? What do you find interesting about here?
I'm asking seriously. I want to understand your positive feelings on the series.

Another positive thing: Alice scolding Azami for being a shitty person & scolding Erina for being so emo.

Point taken. If by some quirk of fate one day you write a book, do not ever forget that.

The positive thing I can say is Erina getting character development & the Soma x Erina getting development. That's all.Don't forget to thank Azami for that. He is the sole cause of all Erina's character development. Nonsensycal system aside we cannot deny the dude was a wonderful catalyst.

We can't have two Nakiri in the same team, that would be too much. In the meantime you can enjoy yourself watching how Alice livens up the mood.
